Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has six regional chocobo mounts, and each must be unlocked separately. You call the native bird for your current region with R1, but it cannot follow you into another region. Piko is available in the Grasslands in Chapter 2, while Belle, the Corel rental bird, Fango, Aponi and Selena become available through later quests, story events or regional wrangling challenges. Their special abilities are deliberately restricted to marked terrain: painted climbing walls, jungle mushrooms and branches, glide hardware, or water for the Chocojet. Repairing Chocobo Stops opens local fast-travel points, while the first paid shortcut between regions is the 300-gil carriage unlocked by Junon’s Stuck in a Rut quest.
This guide covers Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the 2024 second part of the remake project—not the 1997 original’s catch-and-breed system.

What chocobo mounts are available in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
There are six overworld chocobos, one for each open-world region. VGKAMI counted six unique mounts in 2024. Grasslands and Corel use the normal yellow-type bird, but they are still separate regional mounts with separate access rules.

Every regional bird shares scenting and excavation. Hold D-pad Up when a question mark appears, use R3 to face the scent, then press D-pad Down to dig. After a region’s bird is unlocked, press R1 anywhere in that region to call it.

How do I get a chocobo early in FF7 Rebirth?
The earliest mount is Piko in the Grasslands during Chapter 2. After leaving Kalm, follow the road toward Bill’s Chocobo Ranch, east of town via the Abandoned Dock. The Hustle de Chocobo tutorial is mandatory, so you cannot miss the first bird if you continue the story.
- Enter the ranch and begin the tutorial to locate the escaped Piko.
- Sneak through tall grass. Throw rocks to turn other birds away and break their sight lines.
- Approach Piko from behind and press Triangle to mount.
- Return to the ranch. After Billy prepares the bird, speak with him again.
- Complete the short training ride. Chadley then introduces World Intel activities.
Radio Times described this as occurring within the first couple of hours after leaving Kalm. Piko is a regular yellow chocobo with no region-specific traversal trick, but the bird is required to cross the Grasslands swamp and makes the large opening area far easier to search.
Where do I get a chocobo in every region?
Junon: how do I catch Belle?
Belle is the Mountain Chocobo associated with Junon in Chapter 4. Go to Gabe’s Ranch and start Stuck in a Rut. The capture site is west of the ranch, south of the entrance to Under Junon, at the abandoned farm marked by a Chocobo Intel pin.
- Activate the minecart switches by hand or by throwing rocks.
- Crouch-walk behind moving carts so the yellow birds cannot see you.
- Use the carts as moving cover until you reach Belle.
- Press Triangle behind Belle to wrangle her.
Capturing Belle completes the mount objective; you do not have to finish every part of the side quest to keep the bird. Her Vertical Scaling ability works only on cliff faces marked with white-and-orange paint. This is not the original game’s unrestricted black-chocobo mountain climbing. Finishing Stuck in a Rut, however, has a second major benefit: it opens the 300-gil chocobo carriage between Gabe’s Ranch and Bill’s Ranch, allowing a Grasslands–Junon trip without walking through the Mythril Mines.
Corel: how do I get the rental chocobo?
After Costa del Sol, at the start of Chapter 7, reach the Rent-a-Bird stall near the exit toward North Corel. You do not wrangle this bird. Buy a Rent-a-Bird Membership for 300 gil, or complete Rendezvous in Costa del Sol to receive the membership free.
The rental is a standard yellow-to-orange chocobo with no special traversal ability. It is valid in the northern Corel wilderness around Costa del Sol, not the entire region. Costa del Sol’s resort streets use Wheelies instead of wilderness chocobos.
Gongaga: how do I unlock Fango?
Fango is a mandatory Chapter 9 story mount. After Cloud’s Abandoned Reactor boss sequence, control shifts to Tifa and Aerith, who receive Jungle Chocobos to reach the reactor. Clearing the Abandoned Reactor dungeon permanently unlocks Fango; GGRecon reports that Cissnei gives you the bird after the reactor is cleared.

Fango can bounce from the large mushrooms scattered through Gongaga and skate or grind along broad tree branches. Those surfaces are the jungle’s intended routes through otherwise blocked terrain. The bird does not climb Junon’s painted cliffs, use Cosmo Canyon’s glide terminals or perform the Nibel Chocojet.
Cosmo Canyon: how do I catch Aponi?
Aponi is the Chapter 10 Cosmo Canyon mount. Start Bonds of Trust at Kamaria’s Ranch on the path to the settlement. The capture objective itself unlocks Aponi; completing the entire side quest is separate. The site is north of Kamaria’s Ranch and north of Activation Intel Tower 1.
- Push the minecart along its rails while staying out of the birds’ sight.
- Hide when the flock looks toward you.
- Pull levers to change the cart’s route and use rocks near the final approach.
- Reach Aponi from behind and press Triangle.
Aponi glides from industrial fan plates, Glider Ranges and wind terminals. Hold R2 when the launch prompt appears, then steer through the glide. These are fixed launch points and ring courses, not unrestricted flight; Aponi cannot simply fly across every canyon.

Nibel: how do I lure Selena?
Selena is unlocked in Chapter 11 through Chocobo Intel near Activation Tower 1 by the airstrip. Another approach to the same area is the field of spiky plants to the right of the road toward Nibelheim.
- Collect the respawning Chocobo Bait up the hill.
- Throw bait so Selena follows a route between the inflating cactus-like plants.
- Wait for the plants to deflate before moving through each checkpoint.
- Reach the start of the course and tame Selena.
This is a lure puzzle rather than a stealth sequence. A missed checkpoint can make you wait almost a minute for a retry, according to GameSkinny. Selena’s Chocojet fires water from her claws, giving maximum height when a body of water is directly below. On dry land she still hovers, but not as high. The ability reaches island caves, crosses water and helps descend cliffs Cloud cannot safely drop from; it does not provide permanent flight.
Why can’t I ride a chocobo in the Corel desert?
North Corel’s rental chocobo is deliberately blocked from South Corel’s desert. GameSpot describes the rental bird as usable only in the northern environment near Costa del Sol, while Gameranx limits it to the north section of the Corel map. The game changes transportation methods for the sandy southern area.
Once the story provides the Buggy in roughly Chapters 8–9 (guides differ on the exact chapter), use it for South Corel’s sand and shallow water. The Buggy is faster than a chocobo, can cross debris and does not depend on a summon command, but it cannot be called anywhere and is too large for narrow paths. Do not confuse the Buggy with the Corel rental membership: paying 300 gil only grants the northern bird.

How do Chocobo Stops and fast travel work?
Chocobo Stops are repaired signs that create local fast-travel points and award Golden Plumes. Baby chocobos, or Chicobos, lead you to rundown stops.
- Follow a Chicobo or a Chocobo Stop icon on the map.
- Stand by the fallen sign and hold Triangle until it is raised.
- Collect the Golden Plume and use the stop as an intra-region destination.
- When selecting a destination inside that region, choose whether to arrive walking or already mounted when the option appears.
PowerPyx lists 48 Chocobo Stops in total—eight in each of the six regions—and reports that repairing at least three unlocks the I Brake for Chocobos trophy. None are missable; Chapter Select after the story lets you replay Chapter 13 with the open world available. You can sit on a stop’s bench without repairing the sign, but resting consumes a Cushion because Rebirth does not use the free rest-anywhere benches from Remake.
Stops do not erase regional travel rules. Local fast travel works within the current region after its mount and destinations are available. It does not let you jump from Grasslands to Junon before the relevant quest. The first dependable inter-region shortcut is the 300-gil carriage at Gabe’s and Bill’s ranches after Stuck in a Rut.
Can I take my chocobo to the next region?
No. Each region has its own bird, and R1 summons the native type for the region where you are standing. A Grasslands Piko cannot be called in Junon, Belle cannot be called in Corel, and so on. Unlocking one mount has no effect on the others.

What are the controls for riding and searching?
- Call mount: R1.
- Catch, mount or repair: Triangle; hold it when raising a Stop sign.
- Sniff: hold D-pad Up when the question-mark prompt appears.
- Face the scent: press R3.
- Excavate: D-pad Down.
- Dash: use the assigned analogue dash control.
- Terrain action: use the context button for climbing, mushroom jumps, gliding or Chocojet; Cosmo Canyon’s glide specifically uses R2.
On PC, DualSense controls match the PlayStation layout, while keyboard and mouse controls can be remapped. The ability prompt appears only where the correct regional terrain is present.
What are Golden Plumes and Chocobo Gear for?
Spend Golden Plumes at ranch Chocoboutiques on Chocobo Gear. PowerPyx reports that gear is cosmetic during open-world exploration but supplies stat boosts for Chocobo Racing, which unlocks in Chapter 9. A Mecha-Chocobo earned through Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop is a Gold Saucer racing bird, not a seventh overworld mount.

Nibel’s Chocojet also supports a region-specific collection task: Gameranx reports 50 tufts of Chocograss in Nibel, reachable by using water thrust to reach island caves and other separated spots.

Square Enix’s living FAQ, accessed October 29, 2026, lists PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Its PC requirements specify a 155 GB SSD and 16 GB of memory at every listed preset. DualSense is supported on PC, and the official product page offers both boxed and digital editions. Save-data bonuses include the Leviathan summon from Final Fantasy VII Remake data and Ramuh from Episode INTERmission. Square Enix also states that no post-launch DLC is planned; PS5 Pro Versatility Mode arrived in version 1.050.
How were the regional mount rules established?
The six-mount count comes from VGKAMI’s 2024 guide. PowerPyx supplied the eight-per-region Stop count and trophy threshold, while Gameranx and Gamer Guides reported the 300-gil rental and carriage prices. The traversal descriptions and catch routes above follow the region-specific reporting from Game8, GameSpot, GGRecon, GameSkinny and Gameranx, with conflicting labels resolved by the majority of location and quest guides: Bonds of Trust belongs to Cosmo Canyon, not Nibel, and Belle is identified as the Mountain Chocobo despite grey, black and dark-grey color descriptions.

Does Selena’s Chocojet work over land?
