There is no proven formula for getting ChatGPT to cite a website. The strongest available evidence points to a prerequisite and a useful signal: ChatGPT has to retrieve a page for it to cite it, and pages that match the wording of a question are more likely to be cited in the observed data. Those are associations, not guaranteed optimization tactics.
The headline figure needs a correction. A 2026 study by Mahe Chen and Nick Koudas reports 468,037 citations across 158,099 answers—not 400 million citations. It draws on two 90-day collections about US home internet and small-business software, so it is not a count of all ChatGPT citations. Its abstract covers generative search engines including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.

What does the 468,037-citation study actually show?
It shows that ChatGPT citations are tied more closely to retrieval than to a checklist of page-level formatting features. The 468,037 figure comes from Mahe Chen and Nick Koudas’s 2026 preprint, which analyzed 158,099 answers and two 90-day collections in commercial categories: US home internet and small-business software. It is a substantial dataset, but it is neither a universal census nor a promise that the same patterns hold in every topic, country, language, or ChatGPT setting.
In the study’s within-website analysis, retrieval explained 32% of variation in ChatGPT citations, while page features explained 2.8%. These percentages describe that study’s dataset and method; they are not estimates of how much any individual publisher can improve its own citation rate. They do, however, support a practical distinction: a page cannot be chosen as a source in a particular answer if the system does not retrieve it in the first place.

The authors also replayed 4,946 ChatGPT source lists. Of the pages in those lists, 43.8% at retrieval rank one were cited; the observed rate was 12.2% at ranks six through ten and 3.5% at ranks eleven through twenty. These are rates from the replay, not expected probabilities for a page on another query or at another time. A high retrieval position was associated with a higher chance of citation, but a first-place result was not cited every time.
According to the same study, common page features—including FAQ blocks, schema markup, summary boxes, author boxes, and page speed—did not show citation gains in within-website comparisons. That does not prove such features have no value for accessibility, usability, or other search outcomes. It means this evidence does not support presenting them as reliable ways to cause ChatGPT citations.
How does ChatGPT decide which pages to cite?
Think of citation as a two-part process: the system must first find or retrieve a page, then decide whether to use it as a source in the answer. The studies do not reveal a single stable ranking formula that publishers can control, and they do not establish that every ChatGPT answer uses the same search or selection process.
Retrieval comes before citation
In an API replay described by Chen and Koudas, every page cited by ChatGPT had appeared in the engine’s retrieved results. This makes retrieval a necessary condition in that replay: if a particular page is absent from the results for a run, that page cannot be cited as a retrieved source in that run. It does not mean that every retrieved page will be cited.
Question matching is associated with citation
The study found that titles and paragraphs using language that matched the question were more likely to be cited in the observed data. The practical implication is to make a page’s subject and answer clear in terms that correspond to a reader’s actual question. The study does not test a magic title pattern, prescribe a keyword density, or prove that rewriting a paragraph will cause a citation.

Familiarity and known entities can matter
The authors report that model knowledge and known brands or sources can influence what systems search for and cite. In some answers, a brand was named even when the authors did not identify a supporting page for it. This finding is especially relevant to the commercial subjects in the study, and should not be treated as a universal rule for every query or as proof that brand recognition alone earns a citation.
How can I make my website more likely to be cited?
You cannot guarantee a citation, but you can make a page’s relevance easier to recognize and measure whether it is being retrieved. Treat the following as evidence-informed publishing and measurement practices, not a proven optimization recipe.
1. Start with a real reader question
Choose a specific question your intended audience asks, rather than beginning with a broad topic label. Use natural question language in the title and opening explanation where it accurately describes the page. The observed association between query-language match and citation makes this a reasonable editorial choice, but not a causal promise.
2. Answer the question plainly, then supply the supporting detail
Put the direct answer near the beginning and make the page’s scope clear. Follow it with the qualifications, explanations, comparisons, or steps that substantiate the answer. This is a practical interpretation of the query-match and retrieval findings: a page that clearly addresses the question is easier to assess as relevant. The studies do not test a required word count or a particular answer-first template.
3. Keep the claims a source would need easy to identify
Organize the page so that important claims and their supporting details are understandable in context. Use headings that describe the subject of each section, and distinguish established facts from estimates or limits. This advice is about making a useful, interpretable source; the cited studies do not show that any one heading structure, schema type, author box, or summary element independently increases citation likelihood.

4. Check retrieval before changing page decoration
For a question where your page should be relevant, first determine whether ChatGPT retrieves the page or its hostname at all. If it is not retrieved, a formatting change alone cannot make it the cited source in that run. If it is retrieved but not cited, that is a different outcome worth recording—not proof that a specific page feature is missing.
5. Treat Google visibility as context, not a substitute
In the Chen and Koudas study’s US-query replay, most pages retrieved by ChatGPT did not appear in Google’s top 50 for the engine’s queries. That result is limited to the studied queries and replay period, but it cautions against using a Google rank as a stand-in for ChatGPT retrieval or citation visibility. You can record conventional search visibility alongside ChatGPT results, but the measures answer different questions.
How should I measure ChatGPT citations?
Use a repeatable set of representative questions and record what happened on each run. A single answer is a snapshot, not a stable verdict: citation visibility can vary with the wording of the question, repeated runs, model setting, and time.
Build a useful tracking record
- Question: Save the exact wording used. Small wording changes can alter what is retrieved.
- Intent: Label whether the query asks for a factual lookup, synthesis, analysis, or recommendation. The ChatGPT Web study sampled multiple intents, so mixing them without labels can obscure differences.
- Date and setting: Record when you ran the query and the ChatGPT Web setting or model shown. Do not compare results as if settings and dates were identical when they were not.
- Visibility: Record both the exact cited URL and the hostname or organization. A hostname appearing somewhere in an answer is not the same as your particular page being cited.
- Retrieval and citation: Where the interface or measurement method exposes retrieved sources, note whether your page was retrieved and whether it was cited. These are separate outcomes.
- Search context: If useful, note conventional Google or Bing visibility separately. Do not substitute it for evidence that ChatGPT retrieved your page.
Repeat the same questions over time and, where relevant, across settings. This lets you distinguish a result that recurs from a one-off appearance. It still will not prove that a content change caused a citation shift: other parts of the search and model systems may have changed as well.
Do Google rankings, FAQ schema, or page speed earn ChatGPT citations?
The available evidence does not establish that any of these factors reliably earns a ChatGPT citation. They should not be sold as direct citation levers on the basis of these studies.

Google rankings
Google and ChatGPT citation visibility are not interchangeable. The study’s replay found that most ChatGPT-retrieved pages were not in Google’s top 50 for the tested US queries. This does not show that Google rankings never matter; it shows that a Google result alone is not evidence that ChatGPT will retrieve or cite the page.
FAQ blocks and structured data
FAQ blocks and schema markup did not show citation gains in the study’s within-site comparisons. The finding does not rule out other purposes for structured data, but it gives no basis for promising that adding FAQ schema will get a page cited.
Speed, summaries, and author boxes
Page speed, summary boxes, and author boxes likewise did not show citation gains in those comparisons. The measured result is not a general judgment of their value to readers or to other systems; it is a limit on what this citation evidence supports.
Why can citations change between runs?
ChatGPT citation results can vary with the exact query, repeated runs, product setting or model, and time. A citation appearing once does not establish that the page will appear consistently, while a missing citation in one answer does not establish that it will never appear.
A separate 2026 study by Yunxuan Jiang, Shiqi Zhang, Anqi Xing, Xiangyu Chang, and Xiaokui Xiao examined ChatGPT Web settings. It used 80 queries across four intents and Chinese and English, repeatedly run on four settings from late March through late July 2026, for roughly 4,200 runs. That is a different study and scale from the 468,037-citation preprint; it focused on repeated ChatGPT Web behavior, not hundreds of millions of citations.

In the repeated-run study, Google Search and the OpenAI Responses API together recovered about one quarter of cited URLs, but about half of cited hostnames. The distinction matters: finding a domain is not the same as finding the exact page that ChatGPT cited. The authors frame their findings as observational associations, not causal claims or tested optimization strategies.
What are the limits of this evidence?
Both studies capture particular samples and systems at particular times. Exact rates should not be generalized to a different country, language, niche, model, or later version of ChatGPT without new evidence.

- The Jiang and colleagues study focuses on ChatGPT Web, with 80 prompts across four intents and two languages, repeated on four settings. Its results do not automatically describe every ChatGPT product experience.
- The studies are observational. They show patterns in collected results, not that publishing more pages, adding a particular feature, or buying a monitoring product causes more citations.
These limits do not make the findings useless. They define what the evidence can support: prioritize relevance and retrieval, track the exact questions and settings that matter to your audience, and avoid treating correlation or one successful answer as a guaranteed playbook.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ask ChatGPT to cite my website?
You can include a request for sources in a prompt, but that does not establish that a particular site will be retrieved or cited. The studies summarized here do not test a way for publishers to compel citation.
Does being cited once mean ChatGPT trusts my site?
A citation shows that a page was used as a source in that answer; it is not a general endorsement of the site or a guarantee about future answers. Check whether the cited page actually supports the specific claim.
Should I buy an AI visibility tool to get more citations?
A monitoring tool may help organize observations, but the evidence described here does not show that purchasing software causes citations. Judge a tool by whether it helps you capture repeatable results for the queries and settings you care about.
