How to Get Better Audio From Your iPhone: Music, Calls, and Recordings

Better iPhone audio depends on what is wrong: music playback, call clarity, or a recording made with the microphones. There is no single switch that upgrades every sound. Start by choosing the matching control—Music EQ or Sound Check for playback, Audio & Visual and supported microphone modes for calls, and microphone placement, recording mode, or cleanup for Voice Memos and video.

The settings below use Apple’s current support guidance for iOS 26 and iOS 27. Menus and features can still vary by iPhone model, iOS release, app, headphones, and region, so a control mentioned here may not appear on every device.

What kind of iPhone audio sounds bad?

Identify the symptom before changing anything. A music problem is usually a playback setting or headphone fit; a call problem may involve a microphone mode or an obstruction; a weak recording often improves when you change microphone distance or recording mode.

What you hear Best first check What the setting changes
Music sounds harsh, dull, or uneven Settings > Apps > Music > EQ Applies an equalization preset in the Music app
Music is much louder or quieter between tracks Settings > Apps > Music > Sound Check Normalizes playback volume in the Music app
One headphone side is louder, or stereo content is hard to hear Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual Centers balance or sends both channels to both ears
A caller hears background noise Use a supported Voice Isolation mode and check the microphones Filters background sound in supported calling contexts; it does not repair damaged hardware
A Voice Memo or video is quiet, distant, or noisy Remove obstructions, move the microphone, then test another recording Improves the original capture conditions rather than merely changing playback

Apple’s guides describe procedures and compatibility, not a guaranteed decibel increase or a universal quality score. Treat each change as a task-specific adjustment and listen to a short test before recording something important.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

How do I make music and headphone playback sound better?

Use the Music app’s EQ or Sound Check for songs, then correct channel balance or configure supported headphones under Accessibility. These controls affect playback; they do not improve every app or repair a faulty speaker.

Set EQ or Sound Check for songs

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then Music.
  3. Tap EQ and select a preset if you want a different tonal balance. EQ changes the relative emphasis of bass, midrange, and treble; it does not create detail that was not in the recording.
  4. Return to the Music settings and turn on Sound Check if track-to-track loudness is inconsistent. Sound Check normalizes volume; it is separate from EQ.

These controls are documented for music playback in the Music app, not as an iPhone-wide sound upgrade. If another app sounds unchanged, look for that app’s own equalizer or loudness control rather than assuming the Music setting failed. See Apple’s Music sound-quality guide.

Correct mono, stereo balance, and an uneven channel

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual. The Balance slider shifts stereo level toward the left or right channel; leave it centered unless one ear or one side of a headset is consistently quieter. Mono Audio sends the same content to both channels, which can make a two-channel recording intelligible when you hear only one side, but removes stereo separation. Apple explains these controls in its Audio & Visual settings guide.

Configure Headphone Accommodations when your headphones are supported

Headphone Accommodations can emphasize soft sounds and selected frequencies for compatible Apple and Beats headphones. Apple’s supported list includes AirPods 2 and later, AirPods Max, AirPods Pro, certain EarPods, and specified Beats models; compatibility is model-specific, so an unlisted headset will not necessarily show the option.

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations.
  2. Turn on the feature and follow the guided audio customization if you want a personal profile. Perform the comparison in a quiet environment.
  3. Use the Phone and Media controls to decide whether the profile applies to calls, media, or both. You can therefore tune music without changing call audio, or the reverse.
  4. If you have already changed EQ or balance, reset those changes before guided setup so the test is not built on an earlier adjustment.

Customization is optional; buying new headphones is not a prerequisite. Existing compatible headphones may already support it. Apple lists supported models and setup details in Customise headphone audio levels on your iPhone or iPad.

How can I make phone calls clearer?

First make sure the microphone openings are unobstructed, then use a supported call mode for the type of sound you want. Voice Isolation suppresses surrounding noise; Wide Spectrum keeps more of the surrounding sound and is not available for ordinary phone calls.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Use Headphone Accommodations for calls when appropriate

If your headphones support Headphone Accommodations, enable the Phone toggle in Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations. Apple also allows the feature to apply to supported call apps, so check the app and headphone compatibility rather than assuming every calling service uses the same audio path.

Choose Voice Isolation, Wide Spectrum, or Automatic Mic Mode

In a supported call, FaceTime session, or recording app, open the app’s microphone controls and choose the available mode. Voice Isolation filters background sound and is useful when speech must stand out. Wide Spectrum retains more ambient sound for situations such as a group or a music lesson, but Apple says it is unavailable during phone calls. Automatic selects a mode where supported.

Apple’s minimum-version guidance is use-case specific: Voice Isolation is available from iOS 15 for FaceTime and certain third-party apps, from iOS 16.4 for phone calls, and from iOS 26 for recording apps; Automatic Mic Mode requires iOS 18 or later. Hardware and app support still apply, and these filters cannot compensate for a blocked, wet, or failing microphone. Recheck Apple’s current microphone-mode requirements after an iOS update.

Check the older Phone Noise Cancellation control

Apple’s Audio & Visual guide says Phone Noise Cancellation is available and on by default on iPhone 12 and earlier. You can turn it off under Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual if its processing is uncomfortable, but this is distinct from the newer in-call microphone modes. It is not a replacement for cleaning or testing the microphones.

How do I record clearer audio in Voice Memos?

For Voice Memos, the biggest practical gains come from placing the microphone deliberately, selecting a channel mode that matches the source, and using cleanup only when it suits the recording. External microphones and audio interfaces are optional; verify exact compatibility before connecting one.

Choose Mono, Stereo, or Spatial Audio

On models and software that expose the setting, open Settings > Apps > Voice Memos > Recording Mode. The choices describe how the recording is captured and presented:

Mode Use it when Important limitation
Mono Speech, interviews, notes, or a source where consistent intelligibility matters more than direction One-channel presentation; less spatial information
Stereo Music, two-dimensional ambience, or a scene where left-right placement helps Requires a supported device using multiple microphones
Spatial Audio A supported device and playback system are available and you want a more immersive presentation Also depends on device, software, and playback compatibility; it is not automatically better for every source

Apple says Stereo and Spatial Audio use multiple microphones on supported iPhones. If the Recording Mode menu is missing, your model or software does not support that choice.

Set the recording level with microphone distance

Point the appropriate microphone toward the source and make a short test. Apple’s Voice Memos instructions state: To adjust the recording level, move the microphone closer to or farther from what you’re recording. Moving closer generally raises the captured level; moving back can reduce overload from a loud source. Keep the phone stable and avoid covering any microphone opening with a finger, case, or film. Clean up an existing Voice Memo without changing its original file

When playing a recording, Voice Memos can offer Enhance Recording, which reduces background noise and echo for Mono and Stereo playback. Studio Sound is for Spatial Audio recordings only. Apple notes that playback options do not alter the original recording, so keep the untreated file if you may need to edit it elsewhere. Details are in Play a recording in Voice Memos on iPhone.

Use an external microphone only when the built-in microphones are the limiting factor

Voice Memos supports the built-in microphones, supported headsets, and compatible external microphones or audio interfaces. Check the exact iPhone connector, the app’s input support, and the accessory’s Made for iPhone or Works with iPhone marking before buying or connecting an iPhone external microphone. Compatibility is not proof of a particular sound improvement, and no accessory is required for basic recording.

Which microphone mode fits speech, music, and ambient sound?

Choose based on whether unwanted sound or natural space is the priority. The mode can affect what a listener hears, but it cannot fix clipping, a loose connection, or a blocked microphone.

Recording situation Starting choice Reason
One person speaking near a noisy street Mono, with Voice Isolation where the recording app and iOS support it Speech is easier to separate from steady background noise
Conversation in a quiet room Mono or Stereo Mono favors simple intelligibility; Stereo can preserve placement if the device supports it
Concert, rehearsal, or natural ambience Stereo or Spatial Audio when supported Preserves more of the scene, provided playback equipment can reproduce it
Group demonstration where room sound matters Wide Spectrum in a supported non-phone-call context Retains surrounding sound instead of aggressively filtering it

Voice Isolation, Wide Spectrum, and Automatic availability depends on the iPhone, iOS release, app, and activity. On iOS 26 or later, Apple documents Voice Isolation for recording apps, but the app must also expose the control. Use a short test recording to confirm the result before a live session.

How do I improve sound in iPhone video recordings?

Camera recording options are model-specific. On iPhone 16 or later, Apple provides Spatial Audio, Stereo, and Mono choices; wind-noise reduction is automatic when recording in Spatial Audio or Stereo on those models.

  1. Open Settings > Camera > Record Sound.
  2. Choose Spatial Audio, Stereo, or Mono if your iPhone offers those options.
  3. Match the mode to the scene: Mono for straightforward speech, Stereo for left-right atmosphere, and Spatial Audio only when the source and intended playback benefit from it.
  4. Record a short clip, play it back through the headphones or speakers your audience will use, and check for wind, handling noise, and blocked microphones.

Supported AirPods can serve as a microphone in supported camera apps, but availability depends on the AirPods, iPhone, app, and software. An immersive mode is not automatically superior: a mono voice clip played on a basic speaker may be clearer than a spatial recording that the playback system cannot reproduce. Apple’s model-specific details are in Change sound recording options on iPhone.

What should I do if my iPhone microphone sounds muffled or unclear?

Follow Apple’s physical checks before changing audio filters. If the same problem remains after the tests below, the phone may need service rather than another software setting.

  1. Remove the case, screen protector, film, or accessory that could cover a microphone opening.
  2. Inspect the openings and carefully clear visible debris. Do not push material farther into the microphone.
  3. Open Voice Memos, record yourself speaking toward the bottom-facing microphone, and play the result back.
  4. Make a speakerphone call or use the Camera app to record a short video with the front camera and another with the rear camera. Play both clips to compare the microphone paths.
  5. Check permission at Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and enable access for the affected app.
  6. Update iOS and the app if an available update addresses compatibility, then repeat the same short test.
  7. Contact Apple or an authorized service provider if recordings and calls remain unclear after the openings are clear and permissions are correct.

Testing more than one app matters because a clear Voice Memo with a bad call can point to a call-app setting or permission, while poor results in every test point more strongly toward the phone’s microphone path. Apple’s complete procedure is If the microphones on your iPhone aren’t working.

How should I set up an iPhone before an important recording or call?

Use this short preparation sequence instead of changing several controls at once:

  • Identify whether the task is Music playback, a call, a Voice Memo, or Camera video.
  • Remove anything covering the microphones and make a ten-second test in the same position and room as the real session.
  • For music, change EQ and Sound Check separately so you know which control affected playback.
  • For calls, choose Voice Isolation only when you want background reduction; use Wide Spectrum only in a supported non-phone-call context where ambient sound is intentional.
  • For recording, select Mono, Stereo, or Spatial Audio to match the source, then adjust distance rather than relying on digital cleanup to rescue a distant signal.
  • Play the test through the intended headphones or speakers. A mode that sounds impressive on one playback system may be less intelligible on another.

Apple’s documentation does not publish a universal percentage or decibel improvement for these settings. Your test clip is the reliable check for the particular iPhone, room, app, and listener you are using.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Music EQ setting change audio in Spotify or other apps?

Apple documents EQ and Sound Check as Music-app controls. Other apps may ignore them and use their own equalizer, normalization, or accessibility settings, so compare the app’s settings before troubleshooting the iPhone itself.

Can I make an old, badly recorded file permanently higher quality?

Playback tools such as Enhance Recording process what you hear without rewriting the original Voice Memo. If the source is clipped, very distant, or missing detail, recording again with better placement is usually more effective than applying additional playback processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Spatial Audio sometimes sound less clear than Mono?

Spatial Audio preserves a more complex presentation and depends on compatible microphones and playback. For a single nearby speaker, Mono can concentrate the voice and avoid spatial information that the listener’s device cannot reproduce.

Do I need to buy new headphones to improve my iPhone sound?

No. EQ, Sound Check, Mono Audio, balance, microphone placement, and app permissions can be adjusted with existing equipment. Headphone Accommodations only adds its guided profile when the connected Apple or Beats model is on Apple’s supported list.

Why is Wide Spectrum missing during a regular phone call?

Apple excludes Wide Spectrum from phone calls because that mode is intended to retain surrounding sound in supported FaceTime or app contexts. Use Voice Isolation or the normal phone-call mode instead, and check the iOS and app requirements if the microphone controls are absent.
