To get a Costa Rican IP address while abroad, use a VPN that lists Costa Rica, sign in, choose its Costa Rica or San José endpoint, and connect. The VPN then gives websites a Costa Rica-associated exit address. If you are already in Costa Rica and need a service intended for another country, choose a VPN endpoint in that service’s country instead. Before subscribing, check whether the location is physical or virtual, which plan includes it, and whether the service you need accepts VPN connections. A location label alone does not guarantee access to a bank, streaming catalog, government portal, or any particular speed.
What does a Costa Rican IP address do?
An IP address is the network address that websites commonly use to estimate your connection’s country. A VPN changes the address presented to those sites by sending your traffic through a VPN exit server. Selecting Costa Rica therefore makes your connection appear Costa Rica-associated, even when your device and internet subscription are elsewhere.

This solves two different problems, and choosing the wrong country produces the opposite result:
- Outside Costa Rica: select a Costa Rica endpoint when you need a Costa Rica-associated connection.
- Inside Costa Rica: select the country where the overseas service is intended to operate. A Costa Rica endpoint will still look Costa Rican to that service.
A VPN changes your apparent network location, not your passport, billing address, account country, GPS coordinates, or eligibility for a regulated service. Banks and streaming platforms can use additional signals such as account records, cookies, device location, and fraud checks.

How do I get a Costa Rican IP address?
The process is usually the same on Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone, and compatible routers. The exact button names vary by app, so use the provider’s current instructions.
- Choose a provider that currently lists Costa Rica. Open its server list or location page and confirm that Costa Rica is available in the plan you intend to buy. Do not rely on an old blog post or a country list cached in a search result.
- Check the location type. A provider may label an endpoint Costa Rica while hosting the underlying server hardware in another country. If hardware inside Costa Rica matters to you, read the provider’s virtual-location disclosure before subscribing.
- Install the official application. Download the provider’s app for your operating system, or verify that your router supports the provider’s VPN client configuration. Keep the app updated so its server list and protocol support are current.
- Sign in and allow the requested network permissions. VPN apps need permission to create a VPN connection. On mobile, approve the operating-system VPN profile prompt; without it, the app cannot route traffic.
- Open the location list and select Costa Rica. Some apps show a country entry, while others show a city such as San José. Select the exact Costa Rica entry rather than an automatic or nearest-server option.
- Connect and wait for the status to change. Do not start the activity that needs the Costa Rica address until the app reports that the tunnel is active.
- Verify the result independently. Visit an IP-checking service and confirm that the reported country is Costa Rica. Also check for DNS or WebRTC leakage if the website you are using is sensitive to network-location mismatches.
- Test the destination service. Sign in normally and check whether the service accepts the connection. If it rejects the VPN, changing to another Costa Rica server may help, but no provider can guarantee acceptance by a third party.
Private Internet Access describes this mobile sequence as installing its iOS or Android app, logging in, selecting Costa Rica, and connecting on its Costa Rica IP address page.
Which VPN providers list Costa Rica?
The sources below establish that these providers have advertised Costa Rica locations, but they do not constitute independent speed, uptime, or compatibility tests. Availability and plan rules can change, so open the provider’s current app or support page before paying.
| Provider | What the cited material establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Private Internet Access | Its support article dated October 20, 2026 lists Costa Rica among the locations in its app and describes 113 countries overall. Its Costa Rica page explains mobile setup and says a dedicated Costa Rica IP is not currently offered. | The location list does not prove a physical server in Costa Rica, a particular speed, or access to a named bank or streaming catalog. Its Costa Rica location is identified as virtual in a separate support article. |
| Proton VPN | An announcement dated September 24, 2019 said four servers had been installed in a San José data center. It described CR#1 on Basic and CR#2–4 on Plus and Visionary at that time. | Those are historical 2019 details, not confirmation of the current server count, hardware location, or present-day plan eligibility. Check the current server list and subscription terms. |
| Bitdefender VPN | Its official FAQ lists Costa Rica among VPN server locations. | The FAQ does not by itself establish physical hosting, current plan access, speed, uptime, or compatibility with a particular third-party service. |
Private Internet Access’s current location list is documented in its server-location support article. Proton’s dated announcement is at Proton VPN’s Costa Rica servers page, and Bitdefender’s country list appears in its VPN FAQ.
Is a Costa Rica VPN location physically in Costa Rica?
Not necessarily. A virtual location uses an IP range associated with one country while the VPN hardware is hosted elsewhere. The connection can still appear Costa Rican to many websites, but the physical path, latency, and data-center jurisdiction may differ from what the country label suggests.
Rank #2
Private Internet Access states that its Costa Rica (San José) virtual location is physically hosted in Miami, United States. Read its virtual-server-location explanation for that disclosure. This distinction matters if you need traffic to enter Costa Rica physically, are comparing latency from Central America, or have a policy that requires data to remain in a specific country.
A virtual endpoint can still be useful for ordinary country-based websites, but treat the label as an exit-country claim rather than proof of local hardware. Ask the provider which locations are virtual, where the hardware is hosted, and whether the disclosure applies to the exact city shown in the app.
What should I check before choosing a provider?
Compare the practical characteristics below instead of choosing solely by the number of countries in a marketing list.
Endpoint availability
Confirm that Costa Rica appears in the current application for your device and subscription tier. A provider may change locations, retire a server, or restrict a country to selected plans.
Physical versus virtual hosting
Read the provider’s location disclosure. If you only need a Costa Rica-associated IP, a virtual location may meet your goal. If local routing, latency, or jurisdiction is important, require a disclosed physical presence and verify it directly.

Check which tier includes Costa Rica, whether the allowance applies to all protocols and devices, and what the price becomes at renewal. Historical plan descriptions are not a substitute for the current checkout page.
Dedicated IP availability
A shared VPN address may be used by many customers and can be blocked or challenged more often. Private Internet Access says it does not currently offer dedicated IP addresses in Costa Rica. If a service requires a fixed address, ask the provider specifically whether a dedicated Costa Rican address exists; do not assume that a country endpoint is dedicated.
Service compatibility
The destination controls whether a VPN connection is accepted. A bank may require additional identity checks, and a streaming service may block known VPN ranges. No source cited here establishes guaranteed access for any named bank or catalog.
Device coverage
Check support for your phone, computer, smart television, game console, or router. Devices that cannot run an app may need a VPN-compatible router, but router support is model-specific and requires the provider’s configuration files or instructions.
How much does a Costa Rica VPN cost?
Prices and promotions are volatile. The figures below describe what was displayed on the cited pages and should not be treated as permanent rates.
Rank #4
| Provider or source | Published detail | Date and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Private Internet Access | $11.95 per month; $3.99 per month billed annually; $2.03 per month on a three-year offer; a new-subscriber 30-day money-back guarantee | Displayed on the Costa Rica page accessed October 25, 2026. Confirm currency, billing cadence, renewal price, taxes, and current guarantee before purchase. |
| Proton VPN | CR#1 was described as available on Basic, while CR#2–4 were described as available on Plus and Visionary | Announcement dated September 24, 2019. Current plan eligibility and pricing are not established by that announcement. |
| Bitdefender VPN | Costa Rica appears in the FAQ’s location list | The cited FAQ does not state a Costa Rica-specific price or tier requirement. |
A low introductory monthly equivalent can be tied to a long prepayment term. Compare the total charge and renewal terms, not only the advertised monthly equivalent.
Can a VPN router provide a Costa Rican IP to every device?
Yes, a router configured as a VPN client can route devices that cannot install a VPN app through one VPN connection. The router does not create a Costa Rican address by itself; it still needs a VPN subscription and a Costa Rica endpoint.
- Confirm that the exact router model supports VPN-client mode, not only VPN pass-through.
- Obtain the provider’s current configuration files, protocol settings, and credentials for the Costa Rica endpoint.
- Import the configuration into the router’s VPN-client section and select the Costa Rica profile.
- Connect the router, then verify the public IP from a device on that network.
- Decide whether every device should use the tunnel or whether the router supports policy-based routing for selected devices.
Router firmware menus differ substantially. A provider’s generic OpenVPN or WireGuard file may require manual certificate, DNS, or keep-alive settings, so follow the instructions for the router firmware you actually own.

What if the website still detects my real country?
An IP check can report Costa Rica while a destination still identifies another location. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the active interface. Reconnect the VPN and verify the app shows Costa Rica, not an automatic or recently used location.
- Check IPv4 and IPv6 separately. If the VPN tunnels only one address family, the other may reveal your normal connection. Use a leak-testing page and follow the provider’s IPv6 guidance.
- Check DNS and WebRTC exposure. Browser features can reveal resolver or local-network information even when the public IP is Costa Rican. Use the provider’s leak-protection controls or a browser configuration that prevents unwanted WebRTC exposure.
- Clear location signals. A service may retain cookies, an account region, a previously issued session token, or an app-level location permission. Test in a private browser window only after understanding that private browsing does not change your IP.
- Review device location permissions. GPS and Wi-Fi positioning are separate from IP geolocation. A mobile app that has precise-location permission can still know you are elsewhere.
- Try another Costa Rica endpoint. Shared addresses can be rate-limited or blocked. Switching servers may change the address pool, but it cannot overcome a service-wide VPN ban.
- Contact the destination’s support team. If the service requires residency, identity verification, or a local payment method, a VPN alone will not satisfy those requirements.
What if the connection is slow or unstable?
Distance, congestion, protocol choice, and the physical location of a virtual server all affect performance. A Costa Rica label backed by hardware in Miami may route differently from a physically local server, and neither provider marketing nor a country list proves which will be fastest from your home network.
Start with a nearby protocol supported by the provider, reconnect at a less busy time, and compare more than one Costa Rica endpoint. Keep a baseline measurement with the VPN disconnected, then compare latency and stability rather than relying on a single download result. If only one website is slow, its own rate limiting or VPN detection may be the cause.
Is it legal to use a Costa Rican IP address?
VPN use is permitted in many countries, but laws differ by jurisdiction and can change. A VPN does not override a website’s terms, copyright restrictions, banking rules, tax obligations, or identity checks. Use the connection for lawful activity, and read the destination service’s rules before attempting to access an account from a different country.

Use this decision guide before you connect:
- You are abroad and need Costa Rica-associated access: choose a provider with a current Costa Rica listing, select that endpoint, and verify the resulting country.
- You are in Costa Rica and need an overseas service: choose the service’s intended country, not Costa Rica.
- You need hardware physically inside Costa Rica: reject undisclosed or virtual locations unless the provider confirms the physical host meets your requirement.
- You need a fixed address: ask specifically about a dedicated Costa Rican IP; a shared country endpoint is not equivalent.
- You need coverage for devices without VPN apps: evaluate a VPN-compatible router and confirm model-specific client support before buying.
- You need a bank or streaming catalog to work: verify that service directly. A provider location listing is not a compatibility guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Costa Rican IP address let me open a Costa Rican bank account?
No. A VPN can change the apparent network country, but banks generally apply identity, residency, anti-fraud, and account-verification rules separately. Use the bank’s published eligibility requirements and do not treat an IP address as proof of residence.
Does changing my IP also change my phone’s GPS location?
No. GPS, Wi-Fi positioning, and mobile location permissions are independent of the VPN tunnel. An app with precise-location access may still see your physical position even while websites see a Costa Rican VPN address.
Can I get a permanent Costa Rican IP address?
Only if a provider explicitly sells a dedicated address in Costa Rica, and availability is provider-specific. A normal Costa Rica server usually assigns a shared address that can change when you reconnect; Private Internet Access currently says it has no dedicated Costa Rica IP option.
Why does a streaming service show a different catalog after I connect?
Catalog decisions can use account country, payment profile, cookies, device signals, and known VPN-address databases in addition to IP geolocation. Try the service’s own region settings and support guidance rather than assuming another VPN server will resolve an eligibility restriction.

How can I tell whether a Costa Rica endpoint is virtual?
Look for a provider disclosure that names virtual locations or identifies the physical host country. If the app gives no clear answer, ask support for the hardware location of the exact Costa Rica city before relying on it for latency or data-jurisdiction requirements.
