You can reclaim iPhone storage without deleting your photo library. First check Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see what is taking up space. For photos, turn on iCloud Photos and choose Optimize iPhone Storage—provided you have enough iCloud capacity and the library has time to sync. You can also offload apps and remove downloads or files you no longer need.
Check what is using iPhone storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. The screen shows available device capacity, apps ranked by storage use, and recommendations where available. The categories and recommendations can vary with your iPhone and iOS version. Start with the largest items rather than deleting content at random.

iPhone storage is the space physically available on the device. iCloud storage is separate: adding cloud capacity does not, by itself, free local space. Photos take up less room on the phone only after iCloud Photos has synced and iOS manages the local copies, or after you have transferred and verified a separate archive.

With iCloud Photos enabled, Optimize iPhone Storage keeps full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and stores smaller, space-saving copies on the iPhone as needed. Your library remains accessible in Photos, while originals can be downloaded when required. Apple’s instructions say new iCloud accounts include 5 GB of free storage; that allowance may not be enough for your library.

- Connect to a reliable internet connection and check that your iCloud account has enough available storage for the photo library.
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, then turn on Sync this iPhone.
- Choose Optimize iPhone Storage. Menu labels and placement can differ by iOS version; Apple’s currently surfaced guidance describes an iPhone Storage control under Photos on iOS 27 or later, while older versions use the Optimize Storage option directly.
- Allow time for the library to upload and sync. The time required depends on library size and internet speed. Check the Photos sync status and available iPhone storage later rather than expecting an immediate or fixed amount of space to be freed.
Apple describes the feature as retaining full-resolution originals in iCloud and keeping smaller copies on the device as needed. A full iCloud account can prevent new photos from uploading and can also stop iCloud backups. If the library exceeds the available capacity, you may need to make room in iCloud or consider a suitable iCloud+ plan; check current regional plans and prices before choosing one.
Choose between a synced library and a separate archive
iCloud Photos is a syncing service, not a local-only switch that lets you delete phone photos while keeping their originals safely in the cloud. If you delete a photo or video while using iCloud Photos, the deletion syncs to other devices using the same Apple Account. If you want an independent archive, transfer the photos and videos to a computer and verify the copied files before removing anything from the iPhone.

If you use an external SSD or hard drive as part of a computer-based archive, check that your iPhone connector, computer, adapters, drive format, and transfer method work together. Keep the archive until you have confirmed that the files open and the photos and videos you meant to save are present.
Free space from apps without losing their data
Offloading removes an app but preserves its documents and data; deleting the app removes the app and its related data. If you might want the app’s data later, offloading is the safer first step.

- To review individual apps, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, select an app, then choose Offload App if offered.
- To enable automatic offloading, open Settings > Apps > App Store and turn on Offload Unused Apps. The exact layout may vary by iOS version.
Before deleting an app instead, check whether it stores data locally or whether that data is synced or backed up elsewhere. Do not assume deleting an app preserves its contents.
Review downloads, Files, and Messages
- Offline entertainment: In Apple TV and other streaming apps, review downloaded videos and remove ones you have watched or no longer need. A download is a local copy, so removing it can free device space without affecting your photo library.
- Files: Look through the Files app for large documents or downloads. Delete only items you no longer need, or first move a copy somewhere you control.
- Messages: Review large attachments or conversations before removing anything. The effect on iCloud storage depends on your settings and what you delete, so avoid mass deletion without checking the selected items.
iOS may remove downloadable or temporary items when storage is low, but do not rely on automatic cleanup to solve a particular space problem. Use the iPhone Storage breakdown to identify what is actually consuming capacity.

Confirm that space was reclaimed
After syncing, offloading apps, or removing selected downloads and files, return to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and check available capacity and the updated app and category sizes. If photo storage has not changed, check iCloud capacity and sync status; optimization depends on the originals uploading successfully and iOS managing local copies. Avoid deleting photos as a troubleshooting shortcut if you use iCloud Photos.
