Download the app from Nintendo eShop, choose the game, and use a supported Switch controller. Nintendo’s catalog notes that availability varies by country.
What you need to play
- A Nintendo Account and an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership for the account you use on the console. The standard Nintendo Switch Online plan does not include the Nintendo 64 Classics library.
- The Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online app, downloaded from Nintendo eShop.
- A supported Switch controller. The separately sold Nintendo 64-style controller is optional.
Nintendo lists Majora’s Mask in the N64 library, but says the collection is not available in every country. Check Nintendo’s current N64 library listing for your region and confirm the membership terms before subscribing. Nintendo’s announcement of the game’s availability directs Expansion Pack members to download the N64 app.

How to start the game
- On the Nintendo Account you use to play, confirm that Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is active.
- Open Nintendo eShop, find and download Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online, then launch the app.
- Select The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask from the app’s game library.
- Play with a supported Switch controller. For the button assignments currently in effect, open the app’s View/Change Controls screen.
Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play for the app. It notes that the experience may differ on Nintendo Switch Lite. The app presents reproductions of original N64 games, and Nintendo warns that performance and presentation may differ from the originals; it should not be assumed to match original hardware in every respect.

Choose a controller and check its mapping
You do not need an N64-style controller to play. The library supports Switch controllers and control customization, while Nintendo describes its separately sold N64-style controller as optional. Choose based on the layout you prefer and whether you want to use that controller with other N64 Classics; check Nintendo’s local product listing for current stock and price.

The original N64 manual describes two Z-Targeting settings: SWITCH, which toggles targeting with a press, and HOLD, which keeps it active while the button is held. That describes the original game’s setting, not a guarantee that the printed N64 button diagram maps directly to every Switch controller. What makes Majora’s Mask different
The adventure takes place in Termina and is organized around a repeating three-day cycle. Characters follow routines tied to the clock, so timing can matter as much as location. You explore, pursue quests, and use masks that transform Link into forms with abilities suited to different challenges.

The original manual covers the passage of time and saving, Z-Targeting, the quest status and map screens, and the Deku, Goron, and Zora forms. A practical way to approach the game is to treat the clock as part of each puzzle: use the in-game notebook and map to track leads, learn how the cycle and save system work before a long stretch of exploration, and try a transformation when a task calls for a different way to move. These are suggestions based on the original game’s documented mechanics, not claims about specific emulator features.
Saving and the three-day cycle
The original game’s manual explains saving in connection with the passage of time and the game’s data files. Separately, Nintendo’s Switch library page says players can save and return to play. Those statements do not establish every suspend-menu behavior available for this title in the current app. For emulator-level suspend options, check the N64 app’s own menu; use the game’s instructions for its in-game save system.
