Start by identifying which layer is failing. Play the same song in the official YouTube Music app and in your third-party player, then note whether the problem affects only background playback, downloads, Bluetooth, or all playback. If the official app also fails, work through Google’s connection, update, cache, and account checks. If the official app works but the other player fails, the likely cause is that client’s compatibility with YouTube’s changing interfaces, Android background rules, or audio-focus handling—not your phone’s speakers.

Why does YouTube Music work in the official app but not my third-party player?
The official app uses Google’s supported playback stack, account checks, and background services. An unofficial player may rely on an embedded web flow, an extractor, or a patched stream request that can stop working when YouTube changes its servers or application behavior.
Google’s revision history records that the Android Player API was deprecated in 2023, with references removed in January 2025. Android Developers also state that ExoPlayer cannot directly play YouTube URLs and point developers to the YouTube IFrame Player API instead. A client built around an unsupported method can therefore fail while the official app continues to play normally.

Separate software layers can produce similar symptoms. A loading spinner may be a network or extractor problem; silence after locking the screen can be Android background execution; a pause when navigation speaks is usually audio focus; and a “Premium required” message is an account-entitlement issue.
How do I identify the failing layer?
Use the same track, account, network, and output device for a controlled comparison. Do not change several settings before you know which player and playback mode are affected.

Record the exact error text, Android version, phone model, player name and version, track, network type, output route, and whether the screen was locked. That record prevents you from applying a background-playback fix to a client that cannot obtain a stream in the first place.
What should I try first when playback fails?
Google’s low-risk sequence resolves many ordinary app and connection problems. Perform it in order, retesting the same track after each major change.
- Close and reopen the player. Remove it from recent apps, wait a few seconds, and launch it again. Google YouTube Music Help identifies closing and reopening as a first step that resolves many common problems.
- Restart the Android device. A restart clears stuck audio routes, network sessions, and background processes without deleting your downloads or account.
- Test a strong connection. Try a reliable Wi-Fi network, then mobile data if available. Google lists 3 Mbps Wi-Fi as a troubleshooting threshold for playback; treat that as a minimum diagnostic reference, not a promise of uninterrupted high-quality streaming. Congestion, latency, and the client’s own server requests can still cause stalls.
- Install pending updates. Update YouTube Music and the third-party player through the distribution channel that supplied them, and install pending Android system updates. If the failure began immediately after an update, write down both the old and new versions before seeking a client-specific fix.
- Clear the affected app’s cache. In Android, open Settings, choose Apps (or Apps & notifications on some releases), select the player, open Storage or Storage & cache, and tap Clear cache. Cache clearing removes temporary files; it should not be treated as a substitute for checking account access or client compatibility.
- Reinstall only when necessary. Google advises reinstalling when clearing the cache is unavailable or ineffective. Before uninstalling a third-party player, check whether its offline files are stored in an app-private location and will be deleted.
If the official YouTube Music app still fails after these checks, use its in-app feedback option. Include the error message and the reproduction sequence rather than reporting only that “songs do not work.”
How do I restore playback after locking the screen?
Screen-lock failures usually indicate that Android or the phone maker stopped the player’s background work, not that the audio file itself is corrupt.

What should Samsung Galaxy users check?
Samsung documents that Galaxy audio can stop when a music app is not allowed to run in the background. Open Settings and review Battery or Device care sections for Background usage limits, Sleeping apps, and Deep sleeping apps. Remove the affected player from sleeping lists or allow background activity where the labels on your One UI version provide that option.
Close excess apps, restart the phone, and install available software updates. Test again with the display locked. Menu names vary by One UI release, so search Settings for “sleeping apps” or “background usage” if the exact path differs.
What must a player developer implement?
Android Media3 recommends placing the player and its MediaSession inside a MediaSessionService. That service is designed to keep media playback available while the activity is no longer in the foreground and to expose transport controls to Android’s system UI. A client that keeps its player only inside an activity may stop when that activity is paused or removed.
Users cannot add a missing media service through a setting. If background playback fails only in one client after battery permissions are correct, report the behavior to that project and include whether playback stops on screen lock, after swiping the app away, or only after a period of inactivity.
Why does playback pause when another app speaks?
Android audio focus allows only one app to hold focus at a time. Navigation prompts, calls, voice assistants, notifications, and other media players can request focus, causing the current app to pause, duck, fade, or mute.
Android 12 and later enforce focus-loss behavior more consistently, including fading or muting a player when another app requests focus. A third-party client that does not correctly handle focus callbacks may pause and fail to resume until you press Play again.

For a clean test, stop navigation guidance, dismiss voice-assistant listening, end calls, pause other media apps, and disconnect accessories that may issue playback commands. Then start the track and trigger the competing audio source once. If the client pauses but does not recover after focus returns, capture that sequence for the developer rather than repeatedly clearing the cache.
There is an additional Android 15 rule for developers: apps targeting Android 15 or later must be the top app or run a foreground service to request audio focus. This requirement can expose implementation problems after an app target-SDK update even when the phone itself has not changed.

Does YouTube Premium affect background playback?
Yes. Google says background play in the mobile apps requires YouTube Premium. Confirm that the account signed into the player is the account carrying the active membership; having Premium on a different Google account does not grant the entitlement.
Open the account area in the official YouTube or YouTube Music app and verify the profile, then check the membership status in Google’s account and subscription screens. If the service reports simultaneous use, stop playback on other phones, tablets, browsers, televisions, or smart speakers using that account and retry.
Also check Android’s permissions for the player. In Settings > Apps > [player] > Mobile data, allow background data if that control exists. In the app’s notification settings, allow notifications when the player depends on a persistent playback control. These permissions do not create Premium access, but denying them can prevent a client from maintaining its playback session or showing controls.
How can I fix songs that are stuck loading?
Loading problems require separating transport from authorization and extraction. First play a different track, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and compare with the official app. If every player stalls, concentrate on the connection; if only one client stalls, suspect its request method or service dependency.

- Restart the router or switch networks once to rule out a path-specific failure.
- Check whether the player is trying to use an offline copy. A damaged or expired local file can fail even while streaming works.
- Confirm the account and Premium status before treating an entitlement error as a network problem.
- Clear the app cache, then reinstall only if the cache operation is unavailable or ineffective and you have checked what local downloads will be removed.
Do not assume buying different headphones, changing equalizer settings, or lowering screen brightness can repair a stream that never begins. Those changes affect output or power use, not the client’s ability to obtain a YouTube Music session.
Can a YouTube or Android update break an unofficial player?
Yes. A third-party client can depend on undocumented behavior that changes independently of the Android operating-system update schedule. Google’s Android Player API deprecation and the removal of references in January 2025 show why an older integration may stop working without any fault in your account or device.
Android Developers explicitly say that ExoPlayer cannot play YouTube videos directly and direct developers toward the YouTube IFrame Player API. Therefore, an app advertising ExoPlayer support is not evidence by itself that it has a supported way to play YouTube URLs; the client may be using another layer that can break when YouTube changes.
When the official app works, look for a release note, issue, or support message from the exact third-party project and version you use. Avoid installing random patched packages advertised as universal fixes. Version-specific guidance is safer because a patch that repairs one server-side break can become obsolete after another change.
What are the current notes for ReVanced and SimpMusic users?
ReVanced
On 18 March 2026, the ReVanced project announced a Spoof video streams patch update that fixed a recent YouTube and YouTube Music playback break. This is version- and patch-specific: use the current project release and patch instructions, and confirm that the patched application and patch set match. Do not treat that announcement as a guarantee for every older build or Android version.
SimpMusic
SimpMusic’s documentation describes the software as beta, dependent on YouTube Music, and subject to occasional player errors. If the official app works but SimpMusic fails, reproduce the problem with the same track and account, then report it through that project’s issue tracker or support channel with your version, Android release, and error details.

When should I stop changing phone settings and report a client bug?
Report the issue when the official app plays the same track, the account is entitled, the connection is adequate, and Android background or audio-focus settings have been checked. Repeated cache clearing will not repair an extractor or server-interface break.
