If Xbox Cloud Gaming buttons do nothing on your Steam Deck, use Microsoft’s documented Edge route: install Microsoft Edge in Desktop Mode, add it to Steam as a non-Steam game, grant Edge read-only access to /run/udev, and apply Steam Input’s Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad layout to that shortcut. Launch the session from the Steam library shortcut at https://www.xbox.com/play. If input still fails, reapply the layout, restart Edge and Steam, and test one external controller so you can separate a Steam Input problem from a Bluetooth or game-support problem.

This procedure is a practical workaround rather than a fully supported SteamOS integration. Microsoft says its Edge Flatpak is community maintained and that Microsoft does not actively maintain it or officially support Edge on SteamOS, so SteamOS, Edge-package, or Steam Input updates can change behavior.

What is the documented fix for Xbox Cloud Gaming controls not working on Steam Deck?

The dependable path is to run Xbox Cloud Gaming in the Edge Flatpak launched through a Steam non-Steam shortcut. The Flatpak permission lets Edge read the Deck’s input devices, while the Steam controller profile translates Deck buttons and trackpad actions for the browser session.

  1. Switch the Deck to Desktop Mode.
  2. Install Microsoft Edge from Discover.
  3. Add Edge to Steam as a non-Steam game.
  4. Open Konsole and apply the per-user read-only device override:
    flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge
  5. In Steam, open the shortcut’s Controller layout, choose Browse Configs, select Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad, and apply it.
  6. Return to Gaming Mode and launch Xbox Cloud Gaming from that Steam shortcut, using https://www.xbox.com/play.

Do not test from an unrelated desktop Edge window. Steam Input mappings attach to the Steam library shortcut, so launching the wrong browser window can make a correctly configured profile appear broken.

How do I install Edge and add the correct Steam shortcut?

Install the community-packaged Edge application in Desktop Mode, then make Steam the launch point for the browser. The shortcut is important because its controller profile, overlay, and Steam Input state are separate from a normal desktop browser launch.

Install Edge from Discover

  1. Open Discover from the Desktop Mode taskbar or application menu.
  2. Search for Microsoft Edge and install the Flatpak package.
  3. After installation, launch Edge once to complete its first-run setup, then close it before changing its Flatpak permissions.

Microsoft’s guide identifies this package as community maintained. Microsoft’s support wording is explicit: “Microsoft does not actively maintain the Microsoft Edge Flatpak package and does not provide official support for Microsoft Edge on SteamOS at this time.” Treat package updates and SteamOS changes as possible causes if a previously working setup stops accepting input.

Add Edge as a non-Steam game

  1. Open the Steam desktop client and select Games in the menu.
  2. Choose Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
  3. Select Microsoft Edge from the detected applications. If it is not listed, use Browse to select the installed Edge launcher.
  4. Add the entry and give it a recognizable name, such as Xbox Cloud Gaming (Edge).

Keep one shortcut for this purpose instead of repeatedly launching a separate desktop browser. Steam stores the controller layout against the shortcut, which makes troubleshooting repeatable.

Use the optional launch arguments correctly

Microsoft’s example adds presentation flags after the existing Flatpak arguments:

--window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play"

These options open the cloud service in a fixed-size, kiosk-style window and adjust scaling for the Deck display. They can make the interface easier to read, but they do not grant controller access. The input-relevant changes are the /run/udev override and the Steam controller layout.

How do I grant Edge access to Steam Deck controls?

Run the Flatpak override in Desktop Mode, then completely close and relaunch Edge. The command is per-user and read-only; it does not alter the system-wide Flatpak configuration.

  1. Open Konsole in Desktop Mode.
  2. Paste flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge and press Enter.
  3. Close every Edge window, including any background process that remains after the browser window disappears.
  4. Close and reopen the Steam desktop client if the shortcut was already running.
  5. Launch the Edge shortcut again and start the cloud session.

If the command returns an error, check that Edge was installed as the Flatpak application and that the application ID is exactly com.microsoft.Edge. A different package or a typo in the application ID will not receive the permission.

How do I get Steam Input working with Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Apply the gamepad template to the Edge/Xbox shortcut itself. The template gives the Deck’s controls a conventional gamepad mapping while retaining trackpad behavior for browser navigation.

  1. In Steam, open the library page for your Edge/Xbox shortcut.
  2. Select the controller icon or open the shortcut’s Controller layout.
  3. Choose Browse Configs.
  4. Select the official-looking template named Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad.
  5. Apply the configuration and return to the shortcut page.
  6. Switch back to Gaming Mode and launch the same shortcut.

Confirm that Steam Input is active for this shortcut before starting the cloud game. If the layout editor shows a different community configuration, replace it with the named template first; custom layouts can leave buttons assigned as keyboard keys or desktop actions instead of gamepad controls.

Check the profile before every diagnostic test

  • Make sure the active application is the Steam library shortcut, not a desktop Edge window.
  • Open the Steam Input overlay and verify that button presses produce activity.
  • Use one controller at a time while diagnosing; disconnect spare gamepads and USB input devices.
  • Start the cloud session only after Steam sees the controller.

Why are my Steam Deck buttons doing nothing in Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Most failures occur at one of three layers: the wrong launch path, missing Flatpak device access, or a shortcut without a gamepad Steam Input profile. Work through the branches below in order so you do not change several variables at once.

The browser was opened outside Steam

Close the desktop browser and launch the Edge/Xbox entry from the Steam library. Steam Input mappings are tied to that shortcut; a normal desktop launch can receive no mapping even when the shortcut is configured correctly.

The udev override was applied while Edge was open

Flatpak permission changes require a fresh application process. Close Edge completely, restart it, and if necessary restart Steam before testing again. Reapplying the documented override is safe because it is a read-only per-user permission.

The shortcut is using a desktop or keyboard layout

Open the shortcut’s Controller layout and select Browse Configs followed by Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad. A desktop layout may move the pointer but never send the gamepad events that an Xbox title expects.

Steam sees no controller at all

Open Steam’s controller overlay before launching the cloud session. If the built-in controls are absent there, the problem is below Xbox Cloud Gaming: restart Steam, return to Gaming Mode, and retest. If an external controller is absent, repair its pairing or connect it by cable before changing browser settings.

The game changed input mode after keyboard testing

Xbox states that browser keyboard-and-mouse support can coexist with controller use in supported games. Pressing a keyboard key or the controller’s Xbox button switches the active input mode. If the game stops reacting after keyboard testing, press the controller’s Xbox button once and try the gamepad again.

Only one game ignores the controller

Do not assume a working browser session guarantees universal input support. Controller support and browser keyboard/mouse support are determined by the individual cloud title. Test a second known game; if one title works and another does not, the issue may be that title’s input support rather than the Deck configuration.

Does Xbox Cloud Gaming support keyboard and mouse on every game?

No. Xbox’s initial browser keyboard-and-mouse rollout, announced in 2024, listed 25 titles. The list included Halo Infinite, Sea of Thieves, Grounded, and Fortnite in the browser-only context, but that rollout did not make keyboard and mouse a universal substitute for a controller.

Keep two requirements separate:

  • Browser requirement: the supported browser must expose the expected keyboard, mouse, or gamepad events.
  • Title requirement: the particular cloud game must implement that input mode.

When a title does not support browser keyboard and mouse, use the gamepad mapping even if the browser itself responds to typing and pointer movement. A game that accepts keyboard input may still switch back to controller mode when you press the Xbox button.

Should I use the built-in Deck controls or an external controller?

The built-in controls are the most portable option, but an external pad is a useful isolation test and a practical fallback when the Deck’s internal path remains unreliable. Microsoft documents Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless connectivity for an Xbox Wireless Controller, along with compatibility across PC, mobile, and console; the exact Deck result still depends on SteamOS, Bluetooth state, firmware, and Steam Input.

Input option Setup effort Steam Input required? Bluetooth reliability Cable dependence Portability Cloud-game input requirement
Built-in Steam Deck controls Lowest after the Edge shortcut and layout are configured Usually yes for the documented browser shortcut Not applicable None Best The title must accept gamepad events
External Bluetooth controller Pairing plus Steam controller detection Usually, when routed through the Steam shortcut Can be affected by pairing state, interference, and firmware None during play Good, but requires carrying the controller The title must accept the selected gamepad input
Wired controller Plug in, then confirm Steam detects it Usually, when routed through the Steam shortcut Not applicable USB-C or another cable is required Lower The title must accept the selected gamepad input

Use an external controller as a controlled comparison: disconnect other pads, pair or plug in one device, verify it in Steam’s overlay, and launch the same shortcut. If both the Deck controls and the external pad fail, revisit the Edge permission and shortcut profile. If the external pad works while the built-in controls do not, the browser path is probably configured and the remaining problem is the Deck control mapping or Steam Input state.

How can I isolate a Bluetooth or hardware problem?

Change one connection variable at a time. The following sequence avoids confusing a browser permission issue with a wireless pairing issue.

  1. Disconnect every external gamepad and test the built-in Deck controls in the Steam controller overlay.
  2. Close the cloud session and pair one Bluetooth controller.
  3. Confirm that Steam displays that controller before reopening the Edge shortcut.
  4. Launch the same Xbox Cloud Gaming shortcut and test one title that normally accepts a controller.
  5. If Bluetooth input fails, remove the controller from the Deck’s paired-device list, pair it again, and retry.
  6. If pairing remains unreliable, connect the controller with a compatible cable and repeat the Steam overlay test.

Wireless troubleshooting cannot be solved by changing Edge scaling or kiosk options. Those flags alter window presentation, not the controller transport, and a cable test is valuable because it bypasses Bluetooth pairing and radio conditions.

What should I do when a SteamOS or Edge update breaks controls?

Rebuild the known-good path instead of assuming the cloud service changed. First confirm that Edge still appears as the Flatpak application, then reapply the per-user /run/udev read-only override, restart Edge and Steam, and reselect Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad for the shortcut.

Because the Edge Flatpak is community maintained and not officially supported on SteamOS, package updates can alter permissions or browser behavior independently of Xbox Cloud Gaming. Keep a note of the shortcut name and launch arguments so you can compare the current entry with the documented setup after an update.

What is the fastest pre-launch checklist?

  • Desktop Mode was used to install Edge and configure the Flatpak permission.
  • The command targeted com.microsoft.Edge and completed without an error.
  • Edge was fully closed and relaunched after the permission change.
  • Xbox Cloud Gaming is opened from the Steam library shortcut, not a separate desktop window.
  • The shortcut uses Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad.
  • Steam’s controller overlay sees the Deck controls or the one external controller being tested.
  • The game supports the input mode you are trying to use.
  • If keyboard testing changed the active mode, the controller’s Xbox button was pressed once.

Following this order gives you a clean baseline: Steam owns the launch, Flatpak can read the Deck’s device nodes, Steam Input supplies gamepad events, and the selected title is responsible for accepting them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix the controls by changing Edge’s window size or display scale?

No. The window-size, kiosk, and device-scale arguments change presentation only. They can improve readability on the Deck screen, but they do not grant Edge access to input devices or replace a Steam Input gamepad profile.

Why does the controller work in Steam but not inside one cloud game?

Steam detecting the controller proves only that the operating system and Steam Input can see it. The cloud title may require a different input mode or may not support browser-based keyboard and mouse, so compare with another title before changing the Deck setup.

Is a wired controller better than Bluetooth for troubleshooting?

It is a useful diagnostic because it removes pairing, radio interference, and Bluetooth-state variables. If the wired pad works through the same Steam shortcut, repair the wireless pairing or firmware path rather than changing Edge permissions.

Will the Edge setup remain officially supported on SteamOS?

There is no such guarantee. Microsoft describes the Edge Flatpak as community maintained and says Edge on SteamOS is not officially supported, so a future package or SteamOS update may require the permission and shortcut steps to be repeated.
