This order avoids destructive “registry fixes” and prevents you from installing a package for the wrong server version.

- Filter or review entries at the time of the failed attempt. Note the event text, error code, update identifier and any source or connectivity message.

If Windows or the update history indicates that a restart is required, schedule an approved maintenance window and restart the server. After it comes back, confirm that the machine is healthy and that no second restart is still requested before attempting the update again. Do not interrupt a restart while servicing is in progress.
Verify the servicing stack
Check the applicable servicing-stack prerequisite for the Server release and architecture, and confirm that it is installed. The needed prerequisite varies by release and update timeline, so use the package’s current “Applies to” information and Microsoft’s update history rather than copying a prerequisite from a different Server version. If the prerequisite itself fails, troubleshoot that package’s code separately.
What does “update not applicable” mean?
“Not applicable” is an applicability result, not proof that Windows Update is broken. The package may already be installed, replaced by a newer cumulative update, or intended for a different release or architecture.

- Superseded: a newer package may contain the same fixes. Installing the older package is neither necessary nor supported when the newer update is present.
- Version mismatch: compare the package’s “Applies to” list with the installed Windows Server release and build. A Windows Server 2019 package is not a Windows Server 2016 package.
- Architecture mismatch: confirm that the package matches the server’s CPU architecture; an otherwise correct KB can still be rejected.

How do I distinguish a connection or download failure from corruption?
A scan that cannot contact its configured service, or a download that stops before installation begins, points first to source access and policy rather than to component-store corruption.
Check the configured source
Determine whether the server is meant to use WSUS or Microsoft Update. How do I repair component-store corruption with DISM and SFC?
When the error and logs indicate component-store damage, Microsoft’s guidance for modern Windows versions, including Windows Server 2016 and later, is to run DISM first and then System File Checker. Both commands require an elevated Command Prompt.
- Sign in with an account that can elevate, open Command Prompt as administrator, and allow the maintenance window to complete.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. The/Onlineswitch targets the running operating system;/Restorehealthchecks and repairs the component store. - Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the console because progress can pause while repair content is retrieved.
- Run
sfc /scannowin the same elevated window and let verification reach 100 percent. - Restart if Windows requests it, then retry the original update once the server is back in a stable state.
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If that service is unavailable, RestoreHealth can fail because it cannot obtain source content; that is a source problem, not evidence that the command syntax was wrong.
What if RestoreHealth cannot find repair files?
Use a suitable alternate repair source as described in Microsoft’s DISM guidance. The source can be a network location or files on USB or DVD, but the files must correspond to the installed operating-system version. Microsoft’s guidance says the working source computer should run the same operating-system version; do not substitute media from another Windows Server release and assume it is interchangeable.
