If an app says MSVCP140.dll is missing or “was not found,” the usual first step is to install or repair Microsoft’s current supported Visual C++ v14 Redistributable for the app’s target architecture: x86, x64, or ARM64. Choose for the app, not simply for the version of Windows on your PC. Download the installer from Microsoft, install or repair it, and reopen the app. This addresses the common runtime-dependency issue, but it cannot identify or fix every app-specific cause.
What does the MSVCP140.dll error mean?
MSVCP140.dll is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime used by applications built with Microsoft’s C++ development tools. When an app cannot find a required runtime library, Windows may show an error that names the DLL. The message points to a missing or unavailable dependency; by itself, it does not prove that Windows needs to be reinstalled or that a particular file should be downloaded and copied manually.

Microsoft’s recommended distribution route is the Visual C++ Redistributable. It installs runtime components centrally so applications that depend on them can use a supported package. An applicable package may already be installed but need repair, so a fresh installation is not the only possible remedy.
The exact application, its target architecture, the installed runtime, and any installer log are specific to each PC. Treat the steps below as a safe sequence for narrowing down the issue, not as a guarantee that every error with this filename has the same cause.

Which Visual C++ Redistributable should I install?
Use Microsoft’s current supported v14 Redistributable and select the architecture that matches the affected app. Microsoft’s guidance explicitly says the package architecture must match the app’s target architecture.
| Affected app targets | Package to select | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| x86 | Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable for x86 | Use this for a 32-bit app, including one running on 64-bit Windows. |
| x64 | Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable for x64 | Confirm that the app itself is 64-bit; a 64-bit PC alone is not enough to establish this. |
| ARM64 | Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable for ARM64 | Match the package to an ARM64-targeted app. Microsoft notes that its x64 package also includes ARM64 and x64 binaries on an ARM64 device, but that does not replace determining the app’s actual dependency. |
If you do not know the app’s target architecture, check its publisher’s documentation or support guidance rather than guessing based on Windows. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit app, so installing only x64 does not necessarily satisfy an x86 app’s dependency.

Microsoft’s latest-supported downloads page describes the supported v14 line for applications built with Visual Studio 2017 through 2026. Microsoft says the installed runtime must be at least as recent as the build tools used for the app. The download page is updated over time and does not provide one fixed version number that can safely be treated as current indefinitely.
Check the same Microsoft page for supported Windows versions before installing, particularly on an older Windows release. The available operating-system support depends on Microsoft’s current package guidance; do not assume a current installer supports every Windows version.
How do I install or repair the runtime?
Start with the app that displays the message, establish its architecture, then use Microsoft’s current package. These steps avoid the common mistake of choosing solely from the PC’s Windows architecture.
- Identify the affected app. Note its name and where the error appears. If it is a game, utility, or work application, look for its publisher’s architecture or system-requirements information.
- Find the app’s target architecture. Use the publisher’s documentation or support channel if it is not clear whether the app targets x86, x64, or ARM64. Do not infer it only from whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page. In its current v14 table, choose the installer matching the app’s architecture. Get it directly from Microsoft; do not use a third-party DLL-download page or an installer hosted by an unrelated site.
- Install the package. Run the downloaded installer and follow its prompts. If an applicable Redistributable is already installed, use the installer’s supported repair option when offered rather than removing every Visual C++ runtime from the computer.
- Reopen the app. If the message remains, record the exact wording and any accompanying installer or application error. If only this one app is affected, proceed to the app-specific checks below.
Installing or repairing the matching supported runtime is the first reasonable fix, not proof that the problem is solved. A separate app defect, a deployment issue, an unsupported Windows version, or an installer failure may require a different next step.

Why shouldn’t I download MSVCP140.dll by itself?
A standalone DLL download is not Microsoft’s recommended normal fix. Microsoft recommends the Redistributable package, warns users never to install a Visual C++ Redistributable installer that was not downloaded from a Microsoft site, and does not recommend placing individual runtime DLLs in an application-local folder because of servicing concerns.
A copied file may not provide the full runtime dependency the app expects, and a file from an unknown source creates an avoidable security and compatibility risk. Do not copy a downloaded DLL into Windows folders such as System32 or SysWOW64, and do not treat a paid “DLL fixer” as a proven substitute for the Microsoft package. Use the official installer instead.
Microsoft’s guidance about repairing protected Windows system files is a separate procedure. It is not permission to fetch an arbitrary copy of a Visual C++ runtime DLL and replace a system file manually.
What if the Redistributable installer fails?
Do not guess at the cause from a generic error code alone. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance covers running the installer with administrator privileges, checking Windows updates, and collecting installation logs. A code such as 1603 does not by itself identify the root cause; use the log and Microsoft’s guidance to investigate it.

- Windows updates: Check for applicable Windows updates as Microsoft recommends, then retry the supported installer if appropriate.
- Installation logs: Collect and review the installer logs as directed by Microsoft. Use the log evidence rather than assuming that a particular error code means one specific thing.
- An older installer will not install: An older Redistributable may refuse installation when a newer version is already present. Do not respond by uninstalling all installed runtimes; other programs may rely on them.
Use Microsoft’s dedicated Visual C++ Redistributable troubleshooting page for the current instructions. If the package is not supported on the Windows version in use, the package’s compatibility requirements matter; repeatedly running the same installer will not make an unsupported combination supported.
What if only one app still reports the error?
If the correct supported runtime is installed or repaired and only one app remains broken, move to that app’s publisher rather than making broad Windows changes. Microsoft directs users repairing an application to its vendor, and advises developers to verify that required runtime libraries were deployed with their app.

The filename alone cannot establish whether a particular app’s installer omitted a dependency, whether its files are damaged, or whether another app-specific issue is involved. Avoid removing unrelated runtimes or changing system files before the app vendor’s advice points to that step.
When should I run DISM or System File Checker?
DISM and System File Checker address possible Windows component or protected system-file corruption; they are not substitutes for installing the app’s Visual C++ Redistributable. Reserve them for broader symptoms that suggest Windows itself has a problem, rather than using them automatically for one app’s missing-runtime message.
For protected system-file corruption, Microsoft’s sequence is to run DISM first and then SFC in an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand allow it to finish. - Then run
sfc /scannow.
Follow Microsoft’s Windows repair guidance for the commands and their results. These tools investigate a different issue from an absent or incompatible app runtime; running them does not establish that the app’s Redistributable dependency has been installed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is reinstalling Windows necessary?
Not as the first response to an MSVCP140.dll error. Begin with the matching official runtime, then the app publisher’s repair guidance if the problem is limited to one app. Broader Windows recovery belongs later, when other symptoms or diagnostic evidence point to a Windows-level fault.
If Windows recovery ultimately becomes necessary, back up important files and use less disruptive recovery choices before considering reinstallation. Microsoft says a USB drive of at least 8 GB can be used to create bootable installation media with another working PC; creating the media may erase the USB drive, and reinstalling Windows can remove data. That is a conditional Windows-recovery measure, not an MSVCP140.dll-specific fix.

Why is the old Visual Studio 2015 package not the default answer?
Microsoft’s current download guidance distinguishes the supported v14 line from the separate Visual Studio 2015 Redistributable. Microsoft marks the 2015 package unsupported and states that its support ended on October 15, 2025. Advice to install only that older package should not override Microsoft’s current supported-package guidance.
Use the current v14 package information and verify the app’s target architecture and Windows compatibility. If an app publisher gives specific compatibility instructions for its product, consult the publisher rather than treating an old package as a universal answer to every missing-DLL message.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Microsoft publish one permanent version number for the latest v14 Redistributable?
No. Microsoft’s download page is updated, and its latest-v14 table does not establish one fixed version number that remains current indefinitely. Use the current package information on Microsoft’s page when downloading.
Does the x64 package include anything for an ARM64 PC?
Microsoft says its x64 package includes ARM64 and x64 binaries on an ARM64 device. That detail does not establish what a particular app targets, so use the app publisher’s architecture guidance to choose its dependency.
How new does the installed runtime need to be for an app?
Microsoft says the installed Visual C++ runtime must be at least as recent as the build tools used to build that application. The app publisher is the appropriate source for product-specific requirements.
