First, turn off the upscaling option that preceded the problem and compare the same scene again. If the picture clears up but motion remains smooth, adjust the game’s upscaler or render resolution; if the stutter disappears, check frame pacing and SteamOS updates. If the issue appears only on a TV or monitor, troubleshoot that display path separately. These controlled comparisons help distinguish image-quality trade-offs from performance or external-display problems without assuming that one fix applies to every game.

What should I check first?

Identify which display shows the problem and which setting changed. An upscaler inside a game and SteamOS scaling are separate variables; changing both at once makes it harder to tell which one matters. A short, repeatable comparison is more useful than changing several graphics options and judging from memory.

  1. Note the setup: write down the game, its selected upscaler and quality mode if available, the render resolution, whether SteamOS scaling is active, your SteamOS version and update channel, and whether the symptom began immediately after a setting change. This is a practical troubleshooting log, not a Valve-prescribed checklist.
  2. Identify the display: test on the built-in screen, an external display, or both. If the problem appears only on a TV or monitor, use the external-display checks below rather than treating it as a general Deck-screen issue.
  3. Choose a repeatable scene: use the same view and movement each time. For trails or doubled-looking edges, observe a moving object; for softness, compare fine details; for stutter, repeat the same movement or action.
  4. Restore the prior setting: return to the resolution and upscaler setting you used before the problem began, then check whether the symptom changes. Re-enable only one upscaling control at a time.

The comparisons in this guide are diagnostic tests, not guaranteed cures. Valve’s official software guidance applies to both LCD and OLED Steam Deck models, but behavior and available controls can differ by game.

Keep each comparison simple enough to interpret. For example, first note whether the symptom occurs with the prior configuration, then change only the game’s upscaler and repeat the same view. If SteamOS scaling is also in use, test that separately after restoring the baseline. Write down not just whether the image looks better, but whether the change affects sharpness, trails, pauses, or input response. A setting may improve one of these while leaving another unchanged.

How do I tell stutter from ghosting or blur?

Stutter is uneven motion or a brief pause; ghosting is a trail or doubled-looking edge behind movement; blur is a persistently soft image. They can appear together, but they point to different tests: inspect frame delivery for stutter, and compare image reconstruction settings for trails or softness.

What you notice First comparison What the result suggests
Uneven motion or brief pauses Watch Steam’s in-game performance monitor while repeating the scene. Compare the monitor’s frame behavior or minimum information rather than average FPS alone. If the monitor shows uneven frame delivery, investigate performance and frame pacing. A steady-looking average does not rule out a long frame.
Trails behind moving edges Repeat the same movement with the game’s upscaler disabled, then try another available in-game mode individually. If trails change with the game’s setting while motion stays smooth, the setting is a useful place to focus. This does not establish a universal cause or a mode that fixes ghosting in every game.
Softness or loss of detail Compare the current image with the game’s previous resolution/upscaler setting and any available quality modes. If sharpness changes while motion remains smooth, treat it as an image-quality trade-off rather than evidence of a frame-pacing problem.
Artifacts only on a TV or monitor Check the display’s picture processing, Gaming Mode, selected input, and connection. A difference between built-in and external screens makes the display path worth testing; it does not by itself prove the cable or dock is faulty.

How can I isolate an upscaler without changing too much?

Use the same scene and change one setting per comparison. First test the prior configuration, then test the game-level upscaler, then SteamOS scaling if applicable. This keeps the two scaling layers from being mistaken for one another.

It can help to separate the question into two parts: did the setting change the image, and did it change motion? If the image changes but movement remains smooth, focus on image quality and the game’s available options. If the pauses change as well, check performance and frame delivery. These results help narrow the next test, but they do not prove a single cause on their own.

Test the game’s own upscaling controls

If the game has an upscaler, change that control inside the game and leave other settings as they were. Try its available quality modes one at a time; not every game offers the same modes or responds in the same way. A title-specific example is Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 guidance: it describes selecting FSR 2.2 in the game’s Video settings as a balance between performance and image sharpness, with some performance cost. That example is not a general recommendation for other games.

For a blur or trail, compare the game’s available settings against the previous configuration in the same scene. If disabling the game-level upscaler changes the image but does not change motion smoothness, the result points toward image reconstruction quality for that title and setting. If it also removes pauses, continue with the frame-pacing checks rather than concluding that image quality was the only issue.

Native rendering can serve as a useful comparison point when the game allows it, but do not assume it is automatically the best practical choice: the purpose is to see what changes, not to prescribe one mode for every game. Likewise, a quality mode that looks sharper may have a different performance cost from another mode. Make the choice based on the trade-off you observe in that title, and retest movement as well as still detail.

Test SteamOS scaling separately

If SteamOS scaling is active, treat it as its own variable. Return to the baseline, change only the relevant system-level scaling choice, and repeat the scene. Record which configuration you tested; otherwise, it is easy to attribute a change to the game when the system-level setting also changed.

Valve’s SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta notes, dated August 7, 2026, report degraded performance in some cases when composition is required, giving FSR enabled as an example. The same notes say the issue is fixed in stable SteamOS 3.8.16. This is a version- and channel-specific report, not proof that every stutter with FSR has that cause. Check the version and channel actually installed on your Deck before applying the note to your situation.

How do I check whether frame pacing is causing the stutter?

Use Steam’s in-game performance monitor while reproducing the pause or uneven motion. Look beyond average FPS: one slow frame can be visible even when the average looks steady. Valve’s performance-monitor guidance specifically explains that a single long frame can cause visible stutter or input latency despite frequent frames at a solid rate.

  1. Open the game’s performance-monitor controls and enable the in-game monitor. The exact UI path is not established here, so use the controls available in your installed SteamOS version.
  2. Reproduce the same scene or movement that shows the stutter. Watch the frame-rate or minimum/frame behavior around the moment you feel a pause; an average alone can hide an individual slow frame.
  3. If frame delivery is uneven, lower demanding in-game graphics settings and repeat the test. Change one setting at a time so you can see whether the change affects motion.
  4. Compare the result with the upscaler disabled and enabled. Do not assume upscaling always improves performance: Valve’s Baldur’s Gate 3 example notes that FSR 2.2 can have a performance cost.

If the image is soft or has trails but motion is consistent, the monitor may not identify an image-quality issue; return to the game-setting comparison instead. The monitor is useful for evaluating frame delivery, not for deciding whether a particular upscaler reconstructs detail well.

Use the monitor while the symptom is happening, rather than relying on a reading after the scene has passed. A brief pause may correspond to an individual slow frame that barely changes the average. Conversely, if the monitor does not show uneven delivery during a repeatable scene and motion still feels smooth, keep your attention on the image comparison instead of treating softness or trails as proof of a performance fault.

Could a SteamOS update or third-party app be involved?

Yes, software state is worth checking after isolating the setting. Valve’s Steam Deck software troubleshooting guidance recommends installing available system updates and restarting for system instability. For unstable applications, it also recommends exiting or disabling third-party apps installed in Desktop Mode and restarting.

  1. Install available SteamOS updates, then restart the Deck and retest the same scene.
  2. Check your installed SteamOS version and whether you are on Stable, Beta, or Preview. Compare that with Valve’s release notes before treating a version-specific issue as your cause.
  3. If the problem remains, temporarily exit or disable third-party Desktop Mode apps and restart before testing again. This can help determine whether another app is associated with the instability.
  4. For a problem limited to one game, check its Steam Deck compatibility information, update the game, and consult the developer’s support if the issue persists. Valve’s software guide recommends checking game updates and Deck Verified status and trying lower graphics settings for performance problems.

Valve’s notes mention a particular composition-related performance issue in SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta and state that it is fixed in stable SteamOS 3.8.16. Because that report is specific to versions and channels, it does not establish that changing channels will resolve an individual Deck’s problem. Check your installed version first; do not switch channels solely on the assumption that this reported issue explains your symptoms.

Restarting is a basic software check, not a promise that a setting-related artifact will vanish. After any update or restart, return to the same game, display, and scene you used for the baseline. That makes it easier to tell whether the software step made a repeatable difference or whether the symptom still follows one particular scaling option.

What should I do if the problem happens only on a TV or monitor?

Follow the external-display branch only when the symptom is limited to an external screen, or differs clearly between external and built-in displays. Valve’s docking guidance recommends enabling a connected display’s Gaming Mode when available and turning off motion smoothing or other processing that may add latency or cause other issues.

  • Test picture processing: enable the display’s Gaming Mode if available, then disable motion smoothing and other post-processing features for a comparison.
  • Check the selected mode: verify the Deck’s display mode and the TV or monitor’s selected input, resolution, and refresh rate. Confirm that the display and connection support the mode you selected.
  • Test the connection conditionally: reseat the cable, try another known-good cable or input if available, and check dock firmware when the external connection itself appears to be involved. Valve notes that cable capability can depend on the mode and data rate. These are troubleshooting checks, not a reason to buy replacement hardware before establishing a connection fault.
  • Compare screens: reconnect to the built-in display and repeat the scene. If the problem remains confined to the external display, focus on its processing, mode, input, cable, and dock rather than changing unrelated game settings.

If you are changing refresh-rate settings, keep the Deck model’s display limit in mind: Valve lists a maximum of 60 Hz for the LCD model and 90 Hz for OLED. Selecting an app refresh rate above the model’s cap does not improve performance. This limit is relevant to refresh-rate choices; it is not, by itself, an explanation for ghosting or blur.

Do not treat a cable or dock as the first suspect when the built-in screen shows the same issue. A cable or input swap is a conditional test for trouble on an external connection, and the display’s own processing may be involved even when the connection is working. Test one path change at a time, then compare with the built-in screen again before considering replacement hardware.

When should I treat the issue as specific to one game?

If the symptom occurs in one title but not others after a repeatable settings comparison, a game-specific setting or compatibility issue becomes more plausible. That is a diagnostic inference, not a guarantee: the same Deck settings can produce different image and performance results in different games.

Check whether the game has an update, review its Steam Deck compatibility information, and retest after lowering demanding graphics settings if the symptom is stutter or poor performance. For a game-specific upscaler, use that developer’s instructions for the title rather than assuming another game’s FSR mode or quality setting is equivalent. If the problem continues only in that title, contact the game developer’s support; Valve’s software troubleshooting guide directs users toward compatibility details and app-specific support for game problems.

What should I avoid doing while troubleshooting?

Keep the diagnosis reversible and tied to the symptom. The most useful evidence is whether one change consistently alters the same scene, not whether a large batch of settings changes seems to help once.

  • Do not change the game upscaler, SteamOS scaling, resolution, and refresh rate all at once; you will not know which change affected the result.
  • Do not judge stutter only by average FPS. A long frame can be noticeable even when the average appears steady.
  • Do not assume FSR or another upscaler always improves performance. The documented Baldur’s Gate 3 example includes a performance cost.
  • Do not apply the SteamOS Beta note to all versions or all symptoms. It describes a specific issue and version context.
  • Do not buy a cable, dock, or display as a general remedy for built-in-screen artifacts. Check hardware only when the issue points to an external connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Deck Verified guarantee every upscaling option will look or run well?

No. Compatibility information is a useful check, but it does not establish that every graphics setting or upscaler mode will produce the same image or performance result. Check the game’s own settings and support information for title-specific behavior.

Can upscaling damage the Steam Deck screen?

The cited Valve guidance describes software settings, performance, and display troubleshooting; it does not identify upscaling as a cause of physical screen damage. If the symptom changes when you change the game or system scaling setting, keep the diagnosis focused on those reversible software comparisons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I factory-reset my Steam Deck to fix an upscaling problem?

The troubleshooting steps described here begin with updates, a restart, reversible graphics comparisons, and temporarily exiting third-party Desktop Mode apps. They do not establish a factory reset as a remedy for this symptom, so a reset should not be the first troubleshooting step.

Why does my average FPS look fine if the game still stutters?

Average FPS can hide an individual long frame. Valve explains that one frame taking much longer than the others can cause visible stutter or input latency even when the game frequently runs at a steady rate. Watch frame or minimum behavior while reproducing the pause.

Should I use Stable, Beta, or Preview to fix this?

Do not change channels solely on the assumption that one will fix the symptom. Check your installed version and channel against Valve’s notes. Valve’s August 7, 2026 SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta notes describe degraded performance in some cases when composition is required, including FSR-enabled cases, and say the issue is fixed in stable 3.8.16; that is a specific version note, not a universal diagnosis.

Does an upscaler always increase performance?

No. Performance and sharpness can involve a trade-off, and the result depends on the game and setting. Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 guidance describes FSR 2.2 as a balance between performance and image sharpness, with some performance cost; do not assume the same outcome or best mode in another title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Return to the previous configuration, reproduce the same scene, and change only one scaling option at a time. Use the performance monitor for uneven motion, game-level comparisons for blur or trails, and external-display checks only when the issue is limited to a TV or monitor. Update and restart, check your SteamOS channel and version, and avoid buying hardware or changing multiple settings until a repeatable test points to that cause.
