Fix stuttering by identifying what is running out of time—GPU rendering, CPU simulation, memory, storage, shader compilation, or thermal headroom—before changing graphics settings at random. Start with a repeatable scene, record FPS and refresh rate, then lower resolution for a short test. A large FPS gain points to the GPU; little or no gain points toward CPU work, simulation, memory, storage, or frame-pacing limits. First-area hitches can be shader compilation or asset streaming, while low FPS in every room usually indicates a sustained hardware, driver, or game-performance limit.
The sequence below separates those causes and gives reversible fixes first. It also explains when an SSD, more RAM, better cooling, or a faster GPU or CPU is likely to help—and when an upgrade will not address the hitch.

Why does a 3D metroidvania stutter even when its average FPS looks acceptable?
Stutter is a frame-time problem, not simply a low average-FPS problem. A game can report a reasonable average while occasionally taking far longer to produce one frame, creating a visible hitch when you enter a room, trigger an effect, load an enemy, or cross a streaming boundary. Sustained low FPS, by contrast, means most frames are consistently late.
Different symptoms suggest different limits:
| What you see | Most likely area to test first | Useful confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| One-time hitch the first time an effect, material, or area appears | Shader compilation or asset streaming | The same scene is smoother after it has been visited once, or after the game completes its own shader-precache step. |
| Low FPS throughout the game, with little change after lowering resolution | CPU, game simulation, memory pressure, or frame pacing | CPU usage or clocks remain the constraint while GPU load falls. |
| Low FPS that improves substantially at a lower resolution | GPU or pixel workload | GPU utilization and frame rate change together. |
| Hitch coincides with a disk-response spike | Storage latency or streaming from a hard disk | Task Manager shows a long response time at the exact moment of the pause. |
| Performance falls after several minutes and CPU clock speed drops | Heat or power-limit throttling | Temperature rises before the clock reduction and the frame-time problem. |
Meeting a game’s listed requirements is only a baseline. Steam Support notes that “simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance,” and updates can raise graphical demands after release.

What should I record before changing settings?
Write down the conditions for a repeatable test. Without them, a setting change can appear to work simply because the camera, room, or background activity changed.
- Game version and the date of the last patch.
- CPU model, GPU model, installed RAM, and whether the game is on an SSD or HDD.
- Display resolution and refresh rate.
- Current FPS, and whether the problem is a constant low rate or an occasional hitch.
- The exact trigger: entering a new room, opening the map, a large spell, a boss, a menu transition, or a particular save.
- Whether the game is fullscreen, borderless, or windowed, and whether a frame cap, VSync, or variable-refresh mode is active.
Use the same save and camera route for every test. Close unnecessary applications first, then update GPU, CPU, and audio drivers. If the launcher offers file verification or repair, run it before deeper changes; damaged or incomplete files can create instability and streaming errors.

How do I tell whether the GPU or CPU is limiting FPS?
Run a short resolution test, then observe CPU and GPU behavior during the same scene. Lower the resolution or one demanding quality option, replay the trigger, and compare the result with the original.
- Record the baseline FPS and the time of the hitch.
- Lower resolution substantially for one test, leaving other settings unchanged.
- Replay the same route and note average FPS and whether the hitch remains.
- Restore the original resolution before testing another variable.
A large FPS increase means the GPU is spending less time shading pixels. Reduce resolution, shadows, effects, or view distance if image quality can be traded for performance. If FPS barely changes, the work may be CPU-bound: enemy AI, physics, collision checks, world simulation, or draw submission can hold the frame even when the GPU has unused capacity. Microsoft identifies those CPU-heavy tasks as common constraints, and Steam gives the same resolution test as a way to expose a CPU limit.
Do not infer a bottleneck from total CPU percentage alone. A game thread can be saturated while other cores are idle, so a moderate overall reading can still represent a CPU limit. Look for a busy game-process core, low GPU utilization during the slow frame, or a clock-speed drop under load.
How can I fix a GPU-limited game without making it look poor?
If the resolution test produced a clear gain, target the settings that reduce pixel and shading work. Change one setting at a time and retest the same scene.
- Lower resolution or use the game’s resolution scale if it offers one.
- Reduce shadows and screen-space effects before lowering texture quality; textures primarily affect VRAM capacity and streaming.
- Reduce view distance or effects that increase the number of objects and particles drawn.
- Use a sensible FPS cap so the GPU is not rendering frames your display cannot show.
Watch for GPU memory pressure as well as core utilization. If the game begins hitching when a new area or effect appears and VRAM is close to full, lowering texture quality can reduce asset-swapping pressure even when the average FPS is otherwise acceptable. Keep the change reversible; do not lower every option at once, because that hides which setting mattered.

What should I do when lowering resolution does not raise FPS?
Treat an unchanged FPS result as evidence that the pixel workload is not the primary limit. Investigate CPU simulation, thermals, memory, storage, drivers, and frame pacing in that order, using the same reproducible scene.
Check CPU clocks and temperature
Monitor CPU temperature and clock speed while the hitch occurs. Steam Support explains that overheating or power-saving behavior can suddenly reduce CPU speed, making a previously smooth scene stutter. If clocks fall as temperature rises, improve cooling, remove an overly restrictive power mode, or address dust and airflow before buying a faster processor.
Check simulation-heavy scenes
Boss rooms, rooms with many enemies, physics objects, or elaborate effects can be limited by AI, collision, and draw submission. Lowering resolution will not remove that work. Reduce CPU-heavy options such as view distance, crowd or effect density when the game exposes them, and test a less populated room to confirm the pattern.
Check frame pacing
A frame-rate counter can look high while delivery is uneven. Compare an in-game cap, a driver-level cap, VSync, and variable-refresh mode separately rather than stacking all of them. A stable cap that the system can sustain often feels smoother than an uncapped rate that repeatedly misses its frame-time target.
How much free memory does a game need?
Open Task Manager while the game is running and inspect the Performance tab’s Available memory value. Steam Support advises aiming for at least 1,000 MB available; it describes 2,000 MB or more as safer and warns that below about 800 MB Windows may write data to disk, producing pauses.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc and open Performance > Memory.
- Close browsers, launchers, recording tools, and other programs that consume memory.
- Replay the scene and watch whether Available memory falls sharply when the hitch occurs.
- If free memory remains low across sessions, add compatible RAM after checking the motherboard’s supported type and capacity.
Paging can create both low averages and intermittent hitches. More RAM helps only when memory pressure is demonstrated; it will not cure a shader-compilation pause or a saturated GPU.
Can moving the game to an SSD stop area-entry hitches?
Yes, when storage latency or a hard-disk installation correlates with the hitch. It is not a universal fix for CPU, shader, or GPU limits.

Watch disk response time in Task Manager during the exact pause. Steam reports that a request taking a second or longer can stop a game briefly and that response times above roughly 10–20 ms may begin causing problems. Nearly full SSDs can also perform background housekeeping at inconvenient times, so leave working space instead of filling the drive completely.
If the game is on an HDD and disk response spikes line up with room transitions, an NVMe SSD for a gaming PC is a credible upgrade. Check the motherboard’s supported interface, available drive bay or slot, and capacity before purchasing. Bethesda’s official troubleshooting checklist also recommends installing demanding games on an SSD. Copying the game to an SSD will not change a CPU-bound simulation or first-run shader compilation, so verify the correlation first.
Is shader compilation causing the stutter?
A first-use hitch tied to a new effect, material, or area is consistent with shader compilation or asset streaming. Repeated low FPS in every scene is more consistent with a sustained CPU or GPU limit.
Modern graphics APIs can compile shaders just in time during play. Microsoft explains that this can cause longer load times, in-game shader-compilation stutter, and higher power consumption. Some games compile a cache on first launch or provide a shader-precache option; let that process finish, and avoid interrupting it repeatedly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMicrosoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery can precompile shaders before play, but it requires support from the Windows version, GPU, driver, and storefront integration. A player cannot force the feature onto a game that has not implemented it. If a patch changes shaders, the game may need to rebuild its cache, so a temporary first-run hitch after an update does not prove that the hardware is failing.
Which Windows graphics settings are worth testing?
Change one Windows setting, restart the game if requested, and replay the same scene. These options are most useful when a laptop has multiple GPUs or when presentation latency is involved.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Add the game’s executable if it is not listed, open its options, and select High performance when the PC has more than one GPU.
- Where available, test Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
- Set Windows power mode to Best performance or select a High performance plan while testing.
- Turn on Game Mode.
- Temporarily disable Xbox Game Bar and other overlays so you can determine whether capture or notification hooks are involved.
On Windows 11, Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Optimizations for windowed games can improve compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless modes. Microsoft says it moves supported games to flip-model presentation, which can reduce latency and enable variable refresh rate on compatible displays. Enable it globally or for the individual game, restart the game, and compare the result with the previous mode.

How should I set refresh rate, FPS cap, and VSync?
Refresh rate and FPS are different: the monitor’s refresh rate is how often it can update, while FPS is how quickly the game produces frames. Steam Support warns that disabling VSync can introduce tearing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Set Windows and the game to the display’s intended refresh rate.
- Test VSync on and off separately; record both smoothness and latency.
- Compare an in-game cap with a driver cap, not both at once.
- If the display supports variable refresh, test that mode with a stable cap.
Use the cap that the system can sustain in the problem scene. An uncapped counter is not automatically smoother if frame times swing widely. Keep a note of each combination so you can return to the one that produces the most even delivery.
How do drivers, patches, overlays, and damaged files affect stutter?
Software changes can create or remove stutter without any hardware change. Update graphics, CPU-chipset, and audio drivers, then retest. If the problem began immediately after a game patch or driver update, record that timing; the patch may have changed graphical demands or invalidated a shader cache.
Close unnecessary background programs and overlays during diagnosis. Recording, chat, browser, RGB-control, and performance-overlay utilities can consume CPU time, memory, or GPU scheduling opportunities. Re-enable them one at a time after the game is stable so you can identify a conflict rather than permanently disabling useful software.
Use the launcher’s verify or repair function when available. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking for recent patches, repairing damaged files, closing background applications, and investigating dust, airflow, overclocking, and overheating when games freeze or become unstable.

Cooling work helps when temperatures and clock speed prove that the system is throttling; it is not a guaranteed FPS increase for a clean, thermally stable PC.
- Shut down the PC and disconnect power before opening or cleaning it.
- Use compressed air to remove accumulated dust from vents, fans, and heatsinks.
- Keep intake and exhaust paths unobstructed and verify that fans spin normally.
- Retest temperatures and clock speeds in the same game scene.
Do not treat dust removal as a substitute for diagnosing the limit. If CPU clocks remain stable and temperatures are normal, cooling work will not fix shader compilation or storage latency.

Should I upgrade the SSD, RAM, GPU, or CPU?
Choose an upgrade only after a measurement connects the part to the symptom. The following decision table separates likely benefits from fixes that target a different problem.
| Evidence | Upgrade or action | What it can improve | What it cannot guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDD installation or disk-response spikes coincide with room-entry hitches | Move the game to an NVMe SSD after checking interface and capacity | Streaming latency and storage-related frame-time spikes | CPU limits, shader work, or GPU rendering load |
| Available memory stays near the low hundreds of megabytes and paging occurs | Close applications or add compatible RAM | Paging-related pauses and memory pressure | A saturated GPU or a game-thread bottleneck |
| GPU load remains high and FPS rises when resolution is lowered | Reduce resolution, shadows, effects, or view distance; consider a faster GPU | Average FPS and GPU-bound frame times | CPU simulation or storage hitches |
| Resolution changes little, CPU clocks drop, and temperatures or power limits are abnormal | Improve cooling or power delivery; consider a faster CPU only after those checks | CPU-bound FPS and thermal-throttle spikes | Shader-cache rebuilds or a game patch’s own performance bug |
Upgrades are less reversible and cost more than a setting change, so keep the diagnostic record. A replacement part should address a measured constraint, not simply the most visible counter.

What is the fastest order of operations for a new hitch?
Use this short checklist when a previously smooth game begins stuttering:
- Note the patch date, scene, resolution, refresh rate, FPS, and storage type.
- Close background applications and overlays.
- Update GPU, CPU, and audio drivers; verify game files.
- Run the lower-resolution test.
- During the hitch, check GPU load, CPU clocks and temperature, Available memory, and disk response time.
- If it is first-use stutter, allow the game’s shader-precache or compilation process to complete.
- Test Windows GPU assignment, power mode, Game Mode, Xbox Game Bar, and windowed-game optimization one at a time.
- Set a deliberate FPS cap and compare VSync and variable-refresh configurations separately.
- Only then decide whether an SSD, RAM, GPU, CPU, or cooling upgrade matches the evidence.
This order preserves cause and effect: each change has a known target, a reversible state, and a repeatable test scene.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my game stutter only after a major update?
A patch can increase graphical demands or invalidate the existing shader cache. Let any first-run shader compilation finish, then repeat the same scene; persistent stutter after the cache is rebuilt points to a new workload or a software regression rather than ordinary first-use compilation.
Will an SSD increase my average FPS?
Usually it improves loading and storage-related frame-time spikes, not rendering speed. Expect higher average FPS only when storage stalls were also preventing the game from feeding frames consistently.

Is borderless mode always slower than fullscreen?
No. On Windows 11, Optimizations for windowed games can improve compatible DirectX 10 and 11 windowed or borderless titles by using flip-model presentation. Test the option per game instead of assuming one mode is universally faster.
How can I tell whether a laptop is using its integrated GPU?
In Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the game’s executable and open its options. Selecting High performance assigns the discrete GPU when the system exposes one; confirm the result by checking GPU activity while the game is running.
