If your soundbar or AV receiver reports only stereo, the TV may be doing exactly what its menu tells it to do: a Stereo or PCM setting outputs two channels and prevents an encoded Dolby Atmos stream from being forwarded. Change the TV’s digital-audio output to Multichannel, Multichannel (bypass), Passthrough, Bitstream, or a correctly negotiating Auto mode. Then set the source player to bitstream or passthrough, choose a 5.1/Atmos soundtrack in the app, and use the TV’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC. The receiver or soundbar should then identify Dolby Atmos or the expected Dolby format. If the TV still restricts the signal, route the source through an Atmos-capable soundbar or AVR first and send video onward to the TV.

Why is my TV sending only stereo?

A stereo-only selection deliberately converts or limits the television’s digital output to two-channel PCM. Your streaming service, player, and Atmos-capable speaker system can all support surround sound, but the TV will not forward the encoded stream while Stereo or PCM is selected.

Televisions use different labels for the setting that preserves multichannel audio. Philips documentation distinguishes Stereo (stereo only), Multichannel (compressed multichannel), and Multichannel (bypass), which sends Dolby Digital Plus or DTS to a home-theater system. Other sets call the same behavior Passthrough, Bitstream, Digital audio out, or Auto. Auto is useful only when it negotiates the format your receiver can decode; on some combinations it falls back to PCM.

Four variables determine what leaves the TV:

  • The TV’s digital-output choice: Auto, PCM, Passthrough, Bitstream, or a manufacturer-specific equivalent.
  • The HDMI handshake and the capabilities reported by the soundbar or AVR.
  • Whether the TV or source transcodes the incoming format.
  • Whether the connection uses ordinary ARC or the higher-bandwidth eARC interface.

Changing one menu item cannot overcome a missing capability elsewhere in the chain. The content must contain a surround or Atmos track, the source must output it as a bitstream, the HDMI connection must carry it, and the receiving device must decode it.

How do I change the TV setting from Stereo or PCM?

Use this sequence; menu names vary, but the option is normally under the television’s sound or digital-output settings.

  1. Open Settings, then Sound, Audio, or Digital output.
  2. Find the option currently set to Stereo, PCM, or Uncompressed.
  3. Select Multichannel, Multichannel (bypass), Passthrough, or Bitstream. Choose Auto only if the receiver subsequently reports the correct surround format.
  4. Save the setting and restart playback. Some televisions renegotiate HDMI audio only after the stream is stopped and started again.

On Philips sets, Multichannel is intended for compressed multichannel output, while Multichannel (bypass) forwards Dolby Digital Plus or DTS without converting it. The wording and availability depend on model and software version, so use the closest equivalent in your television’s manual.

Do not select a voice-enhancement, secondary-audio, or stereo-mix mode while diagnosing Atmos. Such options can combine commentary or accessibility audio with the main program and force a lower-format output.

How should I connect the TV, soundbar, AVR, and source?

Connect the audio system to the television’s HDMI socket specifically labeled ARC or eARC. A regular HDMI input will carry video into the TV but cannot return TV-app audio to the soundbar or AVR.

TV apps and devices connected to the TV

For a built-in streaming app or a player plugged into the television, use this path:

Source or TV app → TV HDMI input → TV HDMI ARC/eARC port → Atmos soundbar or AVR.

Enable ARC/eARC control in the TV and audio device if a separate toggle exists. Dolby recommends eARC whenever possible; its broader format support requires compatible HDMI 2.1 hardware and a suitable high-speed cable.

When the TV has no ARC/eARC or limits passthrough

Use the soundbar or AVR as the HDMI switch:

Source → soundbar/AVR HDMI input → soundbar/AVR HDMI output → TV.

The receiver decodes the Atmos stream before sending the picture to the television. This arrangement bypasses a TV that cannot pass a particular format, provided the soundbar or AVR has an HDMI input that supports the source’s signal.

Streaming-player alternatives

Streaming players can be connected directly to the TV, directly to the soundbar or receiver, or through the TV’s ARC connection. Roku’s support guidance lists these topologies and notes that support for Stereo, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Atmos passthrough varies by model. Check the exact player specification rather than assuming every model carries Atmos.

What is the difference between ARC and eARC for Dolby Atmos?

ARC and eARC both return audio from a TV to an external audio system, but eARC has substantially more capacity and a stricter connection requirement.

Connection What the evidence establishes Practical effect
ARC Supports TV-to-soundbar or AVR audio, but with a narrower range of formats. Dolby Digital Plus is a common fallback on ARC systems. Many streaming Atmos tracks can work when the TV and receiver support Dolby Digital Plus, but some higher-bandwidth formats will be reduced or unavailable.
eARC Designed for a wider range of formats; Dolby recommends it whenever possible. It requires compatible HDMI 2.1 support and a high-speed cable. Offers the best chance of forwarding the source’s original multichannel signal from TV apps and connected devices.
eARC capability described by TP Vision/Philips (2023) Up to 192 kHz, 24-bit, uncompressed 5.1/7.1 and 32-channel audio. Provides bandwidth for formats that ordinary ARC cannot carry without compression or fallback.

ARC-only combinations can still produce Atmos, usually as Dolby Digital Plus when the service and devices support it. Dolby’s endpoint guidance says sources using Dolby MAT generally need eARC passthrough because ARC bandwidth is insufficient; an ARC system commonly falls back to Dolby Digital Plus instead.

The cable matters as well. Dolby specifies a high-speed cable for eARC’s broadest format support. A cable that works for a basic ARC connection may not provide reliable eARC operation at the required bandwidth.

What should I set on the source device?

The player must preserve the encoded soundtrack rather than decode it to two-channel PCM. In the player’s audio menu, disable stereo-only output and select Bitstream, Passthrough, or the equivalent original-format option.

  1. Open the source device’s audio settings.
  2. Turn off PCM-only, stereo output, or a secondary-audio mix when those options are present.
  3. Choose bitstream or passthrough so the original encoded stream travels over HDMI. Apple describes HDMI passthrough as transmitting the original encoded bitstream, including Dolby Atmos based on E-AC-3 JOC.
  4. If the device offers a separate Dolby Atmos toggle, enable it only after bitstream/passthrough is selected.
  5. Start a title with a known 5.1 or Atmos track and verify the receiver’s display.

Secondary-audio mixing is a frequent trap. When a player combines commentary, menu sounds, or accessibility narration with the main track, it may be unable to send the original Atmos bitstream and instead outputs a compatible stereo or lower-format mix.

How do I select an Atmos track in a streaming app?

Open the title’s audio and subtitle menu during playback and choose the track labeled 5.1, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, or a similar surround designation. A title can have multiple language tracks with different capabilities, and some apps show the Atmos badge only when the account, device, and output path qualify.

If the app offers only Stereo, the content or current device path is not supplying an Atmos track. Roku advises selecting a supported surround format when only stereo is heard; its documentation also cautions that a device supporting only stereo cannot produce surround sound.

After changing the TV or player setting, stop the title completely and reopen it. Streaming apps often choose the audio track when playback starts, so changing a setting mid-stream may not trigger a fresh capability check.

How can I verify that Dolby Atmos is actually reaching the speakers?

Use the soundbar or AVR’s front-panel display, information screen, or signal-status page. It should identify Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, or the expected multichannel format rather than PCM, Stereo, or two-channel.

  • Atmos shown: The source, HDMI path, and receiver have negotiated an Atmos stream.
  • Dolby Digital Plus shown: The system is receiving a compressed multichannel format; an Atmos presentation may be carried within it when the title and equipment support that mode.
  • PCM or Stereo shown: At least one device is decoding, downmixing, or restricting the signal before it reaches the receiver.
  • No audio or an error: The devices may disagree about the format, the cable or port may be wrong, or a source is sending a stream the receiver cannot decode.

Do not use the TV’s volume indicator as proof of Atmos. Only the receiving audio device’s input-format report confirms what it is decoding.

What should I do if the TV still outputs stereo?

Work from the source toward the speakers and change one variable at a time.

Check the physical HDMI path

  • Confirm that the soundbar or AVR is connected to the TV socket labeled ARC or eARC, not an ordinary HDMI input.
  • For eARC, use a high-speed HDMI cable and verify that both ends are connected to eARC-capable ports.
  • Reseat both plugs. A marginal connection can preserve video while failing the audio handshake.

Reset the HDMI handshake

  1. Stop playback and turn off the TV, soundbar or AVR, and source.
  2. Disconnect their power briefly, then reconnect the audio system and TV.
  3. Turn on the source after the TV and audio device have completed startup.
  4. Play a known 5.1 or Atmos title and check the receiver’s format display.

Test each device’s limits

Verify that the television, source player, cable path, and receiver all support the selected format. A single ARC-only component can constrain an otherwise eARC-capable system. Likewise, an older soundbar may accept Dolby Digital but not Dolby Digital Plus or Atmos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bypass a restrictive TV

Connect the source directly to an Atmos-capable soundbar or AVR, then connect that device’s HDMI output to the TV for video. This is the recommended recovery path when the TV cannot pass the source’s format through ARC/eARC.

Recheck software choices

Return the TV to Multichannel, Passthrough, Bitstream, or a verified Auto mode. On the source, disable PCM-only output and secondary-audio mixing. In the app, choose a 5.1 or Atmos track. A single stereo setting anywhere in the chain can explain a stereo report at the receiver.

Which connection should I choose for a new Atmos setup?

Choose based on where decoding happens, the formats your sources produce, and whether the TV can pass those formats without conversion.

Situation Preferred topology Reason
Modern TV with eARC and compatible soundbar/AVR Sources and TV apps through TV; eARC to audio system eARC provides the broadest return-audio capability and keeps the TV as the source hub.
TV has ARC but no eARC TV ARC to audio system for supported Dolby Digital Plus; direct source connection when a format is refused ARC may carry streaming Atmos but can limit higher-bandwidth formats.
TV lacks ARC/eARC or has restrictive passthrough Source into soundbar/AVR; audio device HDMI output to TV The audio device decodes the signal before forwarding video.
Streaming player’s model support is uncertain Check its exact Atmos and passthrough specifications before purchase Support differs among models, even within one product family.

For an upgrade, prioritize signal capacity, the location of decoding, source-format support, the correct ARC/eARC port, a suitable high-speed cable, and a clear receiver status indicator. An expensive speaker system cannot recover an Atmos stream that an earlier device has already converted to stereo.

Does passthrough mean the TV is decoding Dolby Atmos?

No. Passthrough means the TV or player forwards the original encoded bitstream so the downstream soundbar or AVR can decode it. Apple’s definition specifically describes HDMI passthrough as transmitting the original encoded bitstream, including Dolby Atmos in E-AC-3 JOC.

With PCM output, the upstream device has already decoded the soundtrack and is sending pulse-code samples. Those samples can be multichannel, but a Stereo or PCM-only choice limits them to two channels. With bitstream or passthrough, the receiver gets the encoded Dolby signal and determines whether it can decode Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, or another format.

What are the most common setup mistakes?

  • Using the wrong HDMI socket: The cable is plugged into a standard TV HDMI input instead of ARC/eARC.
  • Assuming every HDMI cable is equivalent: eARC’s broadest support calls for a high-speed cable.
  • Leaving PCM selected on the player: The source sends stereo before the TV or receiver can process it.
  • Mixing secondary audio: Commentary or accessibility audio can force a lower-format output.
  • Testing a stereo title: A program without a 5.1 or Atmos track cannot produce one.
  • Trusting an Auto label without checking: Auto can negotiate PCM on a particular TV, source, and receiver combination.
  • Expecting ARC to behave like eARC: ARC has less bandwidth and may fall back from Dolby MAT or another high-bandwidth stream to Dolby Digital Plus.
  • Checking only the TV: The definitive indication comes from the soundbar or AVR’s reported input format.

What does a successful Atmos handshake look like?

The TV’s digital output is set to a multichannel-preserving mode, the source is set to bitstream or passthrough, and the app is playing a 5.1 or Atmos track. The HDMI cable is connected to ARC/eARC ports, the devices support the selected format, and the soundbar or AVR identifies Dolby Atmos or the expected Dolby format on its input display.

If the receiver reports only PCM or Stereo after all of those checks, route the source directly through the soundbar or AVR and use the TV only for video. That arrangement removes the television’s passthrough limitations from the audio path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an optical cable carry Dolby Atmos from my TV?

The setup described here relies on HDMI ARC/eARC because those interfaces provide the required return-audio path and format negotiation. An optical connection is outside that HDMI workflow and should not be assumed to carry the same Atmos formats.

Why does Atmos work in one app but not another on the same TV?

Apps can offer different soundtrack formats, languages, account entitlements, and device support. Check the title’s audio menu in the app that fails and verify that it actually offers a 5.1 or Atmos track for your current playback device.

Will changing the TV to Bitstream make every program surround sound?

No. Bitstream preserves an available encoded stream; it does not create channels that are absent from the content. A stereo source remains stereo, and an unsupported format may still fall back to a compatible Dolby Digital or PCM output.

Why does my receiver show Dolby Digital Plus instead of Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Digital Plus can be the transport format for streaming Atmos, especially over ARC. The receiver’s exact display behavior varies by model, so verify whether the information screen identifies an Atmos object layer or only the underlying Dolby Digital Plus signal.
