If a Steam local co-op game will not recognize a second controller, sends both players’ inputs to player one, or fails to show split-screen, diagnose the game mode first, then Steam’s controller detection, and finally the game’s player-join and input behavior. Steam cannot add local multiplayer or split-screen to a game that does not support it, and a controller that works in Steam may still need a different in-game setup.
This guide focuses on two or more people sharing one PC and display. It also covers Remote Play Together separately, because that feature streams a host’s local game to a remote friend rather than creating local multiplayer.

What should I check first when Steam local co-op is not working?
Check whether the particular game supports the kind of local play you want before changing controller settings. Then verify that Steam detects each controller, and only after that troubleshoot how the game assigns inputs to players. These are separate failure points, so a fix for one does not necessarily solve another.
- Confirm the game mode. Look at the game’s Steam listing and its in-game mode options for local multiplayer, local co-op, or shared/split-screen play. These labels describe capabilities, but do not guarantee that all games use the same display layout or joining process. Check the game’s own instructions for adding a local player.
- Check each physical controller in Steam. Connect the devices one at a time and confirm that each is detected in Steam’s controller settings. Charge or replace batteries if relevant. If a device does not appear there, the issue is not yet specific to that game’s player-two join flow.
- Check the game’s input and join behavior. If Steam sees both controllers, find out whether the game accepts their input style and how it expects a second player to join. The required button, menu, or assignment cannot be inferred from Steam alone.
This order prevents a common dead end: buying another controller or changing Steam Input settings cannot create a missing game mode. Conversely, a game can support local co-op while a device, mapping, or player-assignment issue still prevents the second person from joining.

How do I fix “Steam local co-op second controller not working”?
First establish where the controller disappears: before Steam detects it, after Steam detects it but before the game responds, or only when the game tries to add player two. Follow the branch that matches the symptom rather than changing every setting at once.
| What you see | What it points to | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The controller is absent from Steam’s controller settings. | Connection, power, or device recognition. | Connect it individually, check its charge, and confirm whether Steam detects it before starting the game. |
| Steam detects it, but the game ignores it. | Game-specific input support, layout, or overlay behavior. | Inspect the game’s controller layout and whether the game receives an input type it accepts. |
| It controls the game, but player two does not join. | The game’s join flow or player assignment. | Use the game’s local-player instructions and test devices one at a time. |
| Both controllers move or select for player one. | Input routing, device priority, or a conflicting program. | Restart with a controlled connection sequence and check for other input software. |
| The game runs, but there is no second viewport. | The game may use a shared view or may not support split-screen. | Confirm the exact display mode the game offers and whether local multiplayer has started. |
If the controller is not detected by Steam
Connect one controller, open Steam’s controller settings, and check whether it appears; then repeat with the second. This isolates whether the problem affects one device or both. Make sure battery-powered or rechargeable controllers have charge. If Steam does not detect a controller, changing a per-game layout is unlikely to address the problem because the game-level configuration comes later.
Steam’s interface wording and arrangement can change, so use the controller-settings area rather than relying on old screenshots or a menu path that may no longer match your client. Valve’s player guide to Steam controller settings describes the durable idea: configure and verify a controller through Steam. It is not a promise that every model or every game behaves identically.
If Steam detects it but the game does not respond
Open the game’s controller layout and check what kind of input it sends. A layout that outputs keyboard or mouse actions may not match what the game expects from a controller; a gamepad-style layout may be more appropriate when the game accepts gamepad input. Do not assume that every game accepts both styles, or that one Steam Input setting is right for every title.
Check whether the Steam Overlay is available while the game is running if a Steam controller configuration does not seem to apply. Valve’s support guidance notes that an overlay interaction can matter when a configuration is not taking effect, and that an external launcher can interfere with overlay behavior. Change one setting at a time and retest so you can tell which change mattered. See Valve’s controller troubleshooting guidance for this kind of issue.

Why do both controllers control player one?
Two devices can both be visible to Steam yet still be routed in a way that makes one game treat them as the same player, prioritize one input type, or ignore the second. The game’s own assignment system can also be the missing step. Work out whether the problem begins with the second device, a particular connection order, or the game’s join screen.
- Close the game.
- Disconnect the controllers.
- Reconnect one controller and start the game; check that it controls the expected first player.
- Connect the second controller and use the game’s instructions to join or select player two.
- If the problem appears only after adding the second device, note that sequence and test again after restarting. Avoid changing multiple settings between attempts.
This is a diagnostic sequence, not a universal rule that player one must always connect first. Valve’s controller support materials describe differences in how games prioritize XInput and DirectInput devices, along with possible conflicts from third-party input emulators and other software. The order that works can vary by game and device, so use the sequence to isolate a trigger rather than treating it as a guaranteed fix. Valve’s controller support page discusses these kinds of conflicts.
If both inputs continue to affect one player after isolation, consult the game’s instructions or support information for its player assignment behavior. Steam can recognize separate devices without being able to correct a game-side defect or a game’s particular player-routing design.
How do I fix duplicate movement or keyboard-and-controller interference?
Look for a controller layout that sends keyboard or mouse actions at the same time as the game’s native gamepad input. Mixed input paths can make a character move twice as far, trigger an action unexpectedly, or cause the game to switch prompts. Try a different supported per-game layout only if the game accepts that input style, and change one variable at a time.
Valve’s developer guidance explains that games must handle input sources and duplicate input carefully. That means a layout change can help when the mismatch is in the configured input path, but it cannot guarantee a repair for a game-side issue. If the problem persists with a suitable layout and the game is meant to support multiple local players, check the game’s support notes or contact its developer; the fault may require a game update.

Do not turn Steam Input off for every game as a blanket remedy. A title may depend on Steam Input for a device or configuration, while another may work best with its own native support. Choose settings based on the specific game’s supported inputs and what Steam detects.
Why does my PlayStation controller show Xbox button prompts?
The on-screen icons usually reflect the virtual gamepad input the game sees, not necessarily the physical controller in your hands. Steam Input can present a controller to a Windows game as an emulated Xbox-style gamepad, so Xbox-style prompts alone do not prove that a PlayStation controller is broken.
If the game offers a prompt or controller preference, check that setting. Not every title provides one, and a Steam-side layout cannot guarantee PlayStation button glyphs if the game only displays its own supported prompts. Valve’s Steam Input gamepad-emulation guidance explains how emulated gamepad input works.
Why is split-screen not showing?
First verify that the game specifically supports shared or split-screen play, then confirm that its local multiplayer mode has started and a second player has joined. If the game supports local co-op but uses one shared view, the absence of a separate viewport is not necessarily a Steam display fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Local co-op,” “local multiplayer,” and “shared/split screen” are related but not interchangeable promises. A listing may identify local play without guaranteeing two separate views; the actual mode and display arrangement depend on the title. Check its listing and in-game mode descriptions, and follow its instructions for joining a second player. If the relevant mode is absent, Steam controller settings cannot add it.

Avoid speculative fixes such as changing launch options, editing configuration files, or changing monitor settings without game-specific evidence. Those changes may not address the underlying issue and can make it harder to identify whether the second player ever joined.
Does Remote Play Together add local co-op or split-screen?
No. Remote Play Together lets a remote friend join the host’s local game through streaming; it does not add local multiplayer, co-op, or split-screen support to a game that lacks those features. It is for someone joining from elsewhere, not for connecting a second controller to the same PC.
Valve states that “Only the host needs to own and install the game, while additional players connect through Steam Remote Play streaming technology.” That describes ownership and delivery for a remote session, not a guarantee that any particular title has a local multiplayer mode or will accept every remote input. Check the game’s supported modes, then troubleshoot the host game’s input and join flow as appropriate. Valve’s Remote Play documentation explains the feature.
If you are troubleshooting a remote guest’s controller, first distinguish that case from a second controller connected to the host PC. A remote session adds streaming and a guest connection to the setup; it does not change the underlying game’s requirements for local players or its player-assignment behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I change Steam Input or buy another controller?
Only after identifying the failure. If Steam cannot detect the device, focus on connection and device recognition. If it detects the device but the game ignores it, investigate the layout and the game’s supported input style. If two devices affect one player, isolate connection order and conflicting input software. If the game lacks local co-op or split-screen, neither a setting change nor a new controller supplies that mode.

There is no universal Steam Input toggle for local co-op. A setting that suits one game can be wrong for another, and the physical controller, Steam’s virtual input, the game’s support, and the local-player join flow all matter. Likewise, an additional supported controller is useful only when you need another physical device and the game supports another local player. Confirm the exact model’s connection method and platform specifications rather than assuming every controller works the same way.
Valve’s platform-level controller support does not amount to a per-game guarantee. For a comparison, consider the controller you already own, whether Steam detects it, which input styles the game accepts, how you connect that exact model, and whether the title actually needs another physical controller. This is a more useful decision than buying hardware before checking the game mode and recognition path.

When should I contact the game developer?
Contact the developer when the game advertises the local mode you need, Steam detects both controllers, you have followed the game’s join instructions, and the player-assignment or input problem remains reproducible. Include the game title and version if known, controller models, how each connects, whether Steam detects each, the game mode selected, and the exact point where the failure occurs.
Describe the observed behavior rather than guessing at its cause—for example, “Steam detects both devices, but both control player one after the second joins.” If a different connection sequence changes the result, say so. This helps distinguish a game-specific input issue from a device Steam does not see, without claiming that one troubleshooting setting is universally correct.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Steam Input make every controller compatible with every local co-op game?
No. Valve lists supported controller categories at the Steam platform level, but an individual game may support only particular input styles or have its own player-assignment behavior. Compatibility for the exact game and controller still needs to be checked.
What percentage of Steam controller sessions use Steam Input?
Valve’s documentation gives an approximately one-quarter figure for controller sessions in 2020. It is historical context, not a current 2026 usage statistic.
