If a Steam Deck screenshot won’t save or appear, start by confirming that you captured a still image rather than a gameplay recording. Then verify the Deck’s current screenshot shortcut, make sure the Steam overlay opens in the affected game, install available SteamOS updates, restart the Deck, and temporarily exit third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode. Steam’s general instructions describe F12 as the default screenshot key on Steam, but they do not establish a Steam Deck button combination or an authoritative Deck screenshot folder path.
The most useful first question is not “Which folder is broken?” but “Did Steam receive a screenshot command?” A missing image can result from a wrong shortcut, an unavailable overlay, a recording being mistaken for a still, or a capture that was never completed. Why might a Steam Deck screenshot be missing?
A missing image can mean several different things. The Deck may not have captured a still at all. The Steam overlay may not be available in that game. Your configured shortcut may differ from the one you expect. You may have saved gameplay footage and be looking in a screenshot view. Or the capture may have happened while you were checking the wrong Steam view.
Steam’s documented in-game screenshot feature depends on the Steam overlay. Valve’s general Steam Deck software guidance recommends installing updates, restarting the device, and testing without third-party Desktop Mode apps. Those are sensible baseline checks, not a guaranteed cure for every screenshot problem.

Use the order below to separate a capture failure from a visibility or media-type mix-up. As you test, note whether the game showed any capture feedback, whether the overlay opened, and whether the behavior occurs in one game or in several. Those observations are more useful than assuming that a file must exist in a particular folder.
First, identify exactly what you tried to save
Before changing settings, decide whether you attempted to create a still screenshot or a gameplay recording. They are different Steam features with different controls, views, and storage behavior.

A screenshot is a single image captured through Steam’s overlay. Steam Game Recording captures gameplay footage in background or on-demand modes. On Steam Deck, recordings and their timeline are available from the Media tab in the Steam menu. If you pressed a recording control, open Media and look for the clip or timeline there rather than treating its absence from a screenshot view as evidence that screenshots are broken.
Conversely, finding a recording in Media does not prove that a still screenshot was created. Recording storage settings do not establish where screenshots are saved, and a recording’s location should not be used as a screenshot path. If your goal was a still image, return to the shortcut and overlay checks.
Check the Deck’s current screenshot shortcut
Steam’s general overlay documentation identifies F12 as the default screenshot keybinding on Steam. That is a general Steam instruction, not a documented Steam Deck button combination. Do not assume that a physical keyboard key, a remembered button pair, or another person’s layout matches your Deck.
- Hold the Steam button while the game is running. Review the shortcut list shown for your current Deck configuration and identify the screenshot action.
- Check customized controls. If you changed the Deck’s controls or bindings, verify that the screenshot action still has an assigned input and that you are using the current assignment.
- Try the overlay separately. Use the Deck control for the Steam overlay. If the overlay does not appear, record that fact; it points to an overlay or game-specific problem rather than proving that an image was saved somewhere else.
- Trigger one test capture. Use the shortcut shown on your Deck, then watch for any capture feedback. Avoid pressing several different combinations in quick succession, because you may no longer know which command, if any, was accepted.
- Check the appropriate Steam view. After the test, look in the relevant screenshot or media interface. If nothing appears, continue with the software checks instead of guessing a folder path.
If the shortcut works in one title but not another, write down the affected game and whether its overlay opens. If it fails everywhere, include that broader pattern when you contact support. The distinction helps separate a game-specific overlay issue from a device-wide problem without assuming a diagnosis.
Why the Steam overlay matters
Steam documents in-game screenshots as an overlay feature. If the overlay is unavailable or disabled for a game, the documented screenshot function may not work as expected. A shortcut press by itself is therefore not proof that Steam received a valid capture command.
Test the overlay before spending time looking for files. Launch the affected game, use the Deck’s current overlay control, and observe whether Steam’s in-game interface appears. If it does not, note whether the problem occurs only in that title or in every title you try. Do not assume that all games and configurations support capture identically.

An overlay that opens but produces no screenshot feedback is a different symptom from an overlay that never opens. In the first case, verify the screenshot binding and test again after the software checks below. In the second, report the overlay failure itself to Steam Support. This description is more precise than saying only that “screenshots are missing.”
Install available Steam Deck updates
Valve’s Steam Deck software troubleshooting guidance begins with installing available software updates. An update can change the Steam client or SteamOS components involved in overlay behavior, so make the device current before drawing conclusions from an older software state.

- Install any updates offered by the Deck.
- Allow the installation to finish rather than testing while an update is pending.
- Return to the affected game and repeat the same shortcut and overlay test.
Updating is a baseline troubleshooting step, not a confirmed screenshot-specific fix. If no update is available, continue to the restart and third-party-app checks. Keep a note of the SteamOS and Steam client versions shown on your device; Steam Support may need them.
Restart the Steam Deck completely
After updating, restart the Deck through the normal Steam menu. Valve’s documented path is Steam > Power > Restart. A restart gives the client and overlay a fresh session and makes your next test easier to describe.
- Save or exit the game if possible.
- Choose Steam > Power > Restart.
- Wait for the Deck to return to Gaming Mode.
- Open the same game, test the overlay, and take one screenshot using the current shortcut.
Use the same title and the same sequence when comparing results. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to tell what changed. If the screenshot still does not appear, continue rather than repeatedly rebooting without recording the symptom.
Temporarily close third-party Desktop Mode apps
Valve recommends exiting or disabling third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode as part of its general troubleshooting baseline. Such apps may alter the software environment in which Steam runs, but the guidance does not identify any particular app as the cause of screenshot failures.
- Switch to Desktop Mode if needed and close third-party applications you installed there.
- Disable them temporarily if simply closing them does not stop them from running.
- Return to Gaming Mode.
- Launch the affected game and repeat the overlay and screenshot test.
If the capture works after those apps are closed, do not conclude immediately that one specific app is responsible. Re-enable or reopen them one at a time and retest so you can identify whether the behavior changes. If the problem remains, report that you tested with third-party Desktop Mode apps closed.
How to interpret capture feedback
Capture feedback is a useful observation, but it is not a substitute for checking the relevant Steam view. If you saw feedback and an image appears afterward, the original problem may have been a delayed check or a mistaken media type. If you saw feedback but cannot find the image, describe both facts to Steam Support.

If there was no feedback, first verify that you used the shortcut currently listed on the Deck and that the overlay opens. A silent shortcut press can indicate an incorrect binding or unavailable overlay, but it does not establish which one. Avoid claiming that the screenshot was saved and then lost unless Steam’s interface confirms a capture.
Run one controlled test at a time. Use a recognizable moment in the game, press the documented shortcut once, wait for any response, and then check the relevant Steam interface. Repeating the command many times can create uncertainty about how many captures were actually requested.

The Steam Support screenshot FAQ lists SteamOS as a covered operating system. However, the official information available for this issue does not provide a Steam Deck-specific file path or complete save-and-export instructions. Do not present an assumed folder as an authoritative answer.
First establish that a still screenshot was captured. Then check Steam’s relevant screenshot or media views for the image. If the interface does not make the next step clear, consult Steam Support’s current instructions for your SteamOS version. Do not substitute the storage details for Game Recording; recordings have their own settings and behavior.
A path question and a capture question are separate. If the overlay never opens or no capture feedback appears, locating a folder cannot solve the underlying problem. If Steam confirms a screenshot but you cannot find or export it, tell Support that the capture was acknowledged and describe exactly which Steam view you checked.
What if the problem affects only one game?

What if the Deck is an LCD or OLED model?
Valve’s general Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide applies to both LCD and OLED models. The baseline steps are the same: install available updates, restart through Steam’s Power menu, and test with third-party Desktop Mode apps exited or disabled.
The model alone does not establish why a screenshot is missing. Include the model and software versions when contacting Support, but do not treat the LCD/OLED distinction as a confirmed explanation unless Support identifies one.

Game Recording can operate in background or on-demand modes and has separate settings for footage and storage. The Deck’s Media tab is the documented place to view recordings and their timeline from the Steam menu.
That workflow does not define screenshot handling. A clip visible in Media is not a still screenshot, and a missing clip does not prove that the screenshot system failed. Decide which feature you used, inspect the matching interface, and provide that distinction in any support request.
