Most PS5 headset failures come from a wrong output or input selection, a muted controller or headset, an unsuitable chat/game mix, wireless interference, or a headset the console does not support. Start at Settings > Sound > Audio Output, choose the intended Output Device, and verify Output to Headphones. Press the PS button, open Mic, select the correct Input Device, then use Adjust Microphone Level until your voice reaches Sony’s Good range. If the problem is wireless skipping, reseat the USB adapter, power-cycle the headset, move it away from USB 3.0 devices and other wireless adapters, and use a USB extension cable when necessary. The guide below separates game audio, chat, microphone, echo and connection faults so you can fix the symptom without changing unrelated settings.
What should I check first when a PS5 headset fails?
Use this sequence in order. It begins with controls that can mute a working headset, then moves through PS5 routing, microphone calibration, party chat and wireless interference.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Check every mute control. Press the mute button on the DualSense controller once and inspect the headset’s own mute switch or button. On Sony’s PULSE 3D Wireless Headset, the mute button glows orange when mute is active. A muted controller or headset can make the microphone appear broken even when the hardware is connected.
- Select the intended output device. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device and choose the headset you are actually using. Do not assume the console changed devices automatically after you inserted a cable or plugged in a wireless adapter.
- Check the headphone routing and volume. In the same Audio Output area, confirm Output to Headphones is set for the way you want to hear sound. Raise the level from Settings > Sound > Volume, or open the PS button control center and adjust the headset volume there.
- Choose the microphone input. Press the PS button, open Mic, and select the correct Input Device. A headset can play sound while the console is still listening to the controller microphone, another USB device or no input at all.
- Calibrate the microphone. In the Mic controls, select Adjust Microphone Level. Speak normally and move the fader until the level reaches Sony’s Good range. Speaking directly into the microphone while testing helps distinguish a level problem from a muted or disconnected microphone.
- Check party-chat controls. Open Game Base and inspect the active party or game-chat balance. If the headset provides separate controls, set the relative game and chat volume there rather than repeatedly changing the master volume.
- Stabilize a wireless connection. Firmly reconnect the USB wireless adapter, turn the headset off and on, remove unused wireless adapters and move the adapter away from nearby USB 3.0 devices. If several wireless headsets or USB 3.0 devices are connected, use a USB extension cable to increase the distance between the adapter and those sources.
- Reset before replacing. Reset the headset when echo, pairing or connection symptoms continue after the settings and physical checks. If it still fails, test a known-compatible replacement and verify compatibility with the headset manufacturer. Sony cautions that not all devices work with the console.
Keep the result of each check in mind. If the symptom changes after one step, you have identified the relevant control and do not need to alter every other audio setting.
Why can’t I hear game audio through my PS5 headset?
Game audio usually disappears because the PS5 is sending sound to another output or because the headphone route or volume is wrong. Correct the output device first, then confirm the headphone route and level.

Select the headset as Output Device
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device. Select the wired headset or the wireless headset represented by its connected USB adapter. If the headset is not listed, reseat the cable or adapter before changing software settings; the console cannot route audio to a device it does not detect.
Verify Output to Headphones
In Audio Output, inspect Output to Headphones and set it according to whether you want the headset to carry the available console audio. The setting can differ by device, and Sony notes that available options vary with the connected hardware.
Raise volume at the correct control
Use Settings > Sound > Volume or the volume control in the PS button control center. Also check a physical volume wheel or buttons on the headset. A low headset gain can look like a routing failure when the PS5 is already sending the game correctly.
When the headset works in chat but not games
If voices are audible but game sound is not, the output device is probably recognized and the remaining issue is routing, volume or the game/chat mix. Check Output to Headphones and then use the headset’s game/chat controls, if present, to move the balance toward game audio.
Why is my PS5 microphone not working?
A silent microphone is most often muted, assigned as the wrong input device or set below a usable level. Check both physical mute controls before calibrating the input in the PS5 control center.
Unmute the controller and headset
Press the DualSense mute button and inspect the headset’s own mute control. The PULSE 3D manual identifies orange illumination as the headset’s mute state, so an orange mute indicator means the microphone is intentionally disabled until you press the button again.

Choose Input Device from the PS button menu
Press the PS button, select Mic, and choose the headset under Input Device. This selection is separate from the device used for playback. A headset can therefore deliver game audio while the PS5 records from a different microphone.
Use Adjust Microphone Level
Select Adjust Microphone Level and speak at your normal gaming distance. Move the fader until the meter reaches Sony’s Good range. If the meter does not react at all, return to the mute and connection checks rather than raising the level indefinitely; no amount of gain can restore a disconnected microphone.
Party chat can hide a working microphone
Open Game Base and verify the active party or game-chat controls. Make sure you are testing in the intended voice channel and that the chat/game balance has not been moved fully toward game audio. Sony’s voice-chat guidance treats output-device selection and microphone-level adjustment as the first settings checks.
How do I balance PS5 game audio and voice chat?
Use the headset’s dedicated chat/game controls when available, then confirm the PS5 party settings. These controls change the relative mix; they do not repair a missing output device or muted microphone.
Use dedicated chat and game buttons
The PULSE 3D Wireless Headset has separate CHAT and GAME buttons for changing the relative volume of voice chat and game audio. Pressing both buttons together resets the balance. This reset is useful when one source seems to have disappeared because the mix was shifted all the way to the other source.
Check the active party in Game Base
Open Game Base while the party or game chat is active and inspect its balance controls. Adjust the mix while someone is speaking and while game sound is playing, rather than judging it from a silent menu. If the headset has no dedicated balance buttons, the console’s party controls are the practical way to separate the two sources.

Distinguish balance from master volume
Master volume raises or lowers everything the headset receives. Chat/game balance changes which source dominates. If both sources are quiet, correct the output and volume; if one is loud and the other is missing, correct the balance.
How do I fix PS5 headset echo?
Reduce microphone sensitivity first, because an overly high input level can feed room sound or headset leakage back into voice chat. Sony’s specific PS5 instruction is to move the microphone-level fader two to four notches to the left, then reset the headset if the echo remains.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Lower the microphone level
Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone > Adjust Microphone Level. Move the fader two to four notches left from its current position and test again in party chat. Make small changes so you can tell whether the echo is reduced without making your voice too quiet.
Separate microphone and playback problems
If other players hear an echo but you hear game sound normally, the fault is on the microphone side rather than the output side. Check the headset’s mute state and input selection before changing game volume. If you hear your own voice or a delayed repeat in the headset, the device’s monitoring behavior may be involved; reset the headset when the level adjustment does not clear the symptom.
Reset after the level adjustment
When echo continues after lowering the fader, reset the headset according to its manufacturer instructions. A reset is also appropriate when echo appears alongside failed pairing or other connection symptoms. Do not assume a reset can repair a physically damaged microphone.
Why does my PS5 wireless headset keep cutting out?
Intermittent audio is commonly caused by a loose USB wireless adapter or radio interference near USB 3.0 equipment. Reseat the adapter and power-cycle the headset before changing any party or microphone settings.

Reseat and restart
Remove and firmly reconnect the USB wireless adapter. Turn the headset off, wait briefly, and turn it on again. This clears a marginal connector or a temporary pairing state without changing the PS5’s audio configuration.
Reduce USB and wireless interference
Remove unused wireless adapters from the console and move the headset adapter away from nearby USB 3.0 devices. Sony specifically advises removing USB 3.0 sources when sound skips or the wireless connection drops. If more than one wireless headset or USB 3.0 device is present, connect the adapter through a USB extension cable so it sits farther from those devices.
Use the symptom to identify interference
Interference is more likely when audio skips only near a particular collection of USB devices or improves after the adapter is moved. A headset that remains silent everywhere after a firm reconnection points instead to output selection, compatibility or hardware failure.
What is the difference between wired and USB-wireless PS5 headsets?
The practical choice is between a direct wired controller connection and a headset that communicates through a USB wireless adapter. The important differences are how the PS5 detects the device, which controls the headset supplies and how exposed the connection is to nearby USB 3.0 interference.

Confirm the connection type
Identify whether the model requires a wired controller connection, a proprietary USB wireless adapter or another connection method. For wireless models, the adapter must be present and properly connected; a headset that relies on a connection the PS5 does not support will not become usable through volume changes.
Confirm microphone and control support
Compatibility is more than hearing sound. Verify that the model supports microphone input and that its mute, monitoring or chat/game controls are intended to work on PS5. Sony documents these functions for the PULSE 3D Wireless Headset, including PS5 USB-adapter operation, mute, mic monitoring and chat/game balance.
Test with a known-compatible replacement
If the original headset still fails after the full settings and interference sequence, connect a known-compatible replacement. A replacement test separates a console-side problem from a defective or unsupported headset, but it does not prove the original unit is physically damaged unless the replacement works under the same conditions.
When should I reset or replace the headset?
Reset only after checking mute controls, PS5 routing, microphone level and the physical connection. Replace or seek manufacturer support when a reset does not resolve persistent echo, pairing failure, cutting out or a microphone that never registers in the input meter.
Reset is appropriate for these symptoms
- Echo remains after moving the microphone fader two to four notches left.
- The headset will not pair even after the USB adapter is firmly reconnected and the headset is power-cycled.
- Connection symptoms continue after nearby USB 3.0 devices and unused wireless adapters are removed.
Do not expect settings to repair physical damage
A torn cable, damaged connector, failed microphone capsule or defective wireless adapter requires hardware service or replacement. Software instructions can establish that the PS5 is configured correctly, but they cannot restore a broken component.
Use a documented replacement as a diagnostic
The PULSE 3D Wireless Headset is a documented compatibility candidate because its manual covers PS5 USB-adapter use, mute, mic monitoring and chat/game balance. It is a test option, not a guarantee that every third-party headset will work; confirm any replacement with the manufacturer. Pricing and availability change by region and date, so verify those separately before buying.

| Output Device | Settings > Sound > Audio Output | Which headset or audio device receives PS5 sound. |
| Output to Headphones | Settings > Sound > Audio Output | How audio is routed to the connected headphones; available choices vary by device. |

| Mute buttons | DualSense controller and headset | Whether the microphone is enabled at all. |
| Chat/game balance | Game Base or supported headset controls | The relative prominence of voice chat and game audio. |
Change one control at a time and test immediately. That approach leaves you with a known working configuration instead of several unknown changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any Bluetooth headset with a PS5?
No universal Bluetooth guarantee is established for PS5 headsets. Sony advises checking compatibility with the headset manufacturer, including the required connection method and microphone support.
Why does lowering the mic level sometimes make my voice too quiet?
The two-to-four-notch adjustment is Sony’s echo starting point, not a universal final setting. After lowering it, run Adjust Microphone Level again and stop when normal speech reaches the Good range without the echo.
What does an orange light on a PULSE 3D headset mean?
The PULSE 3D manual identifies the orange mute indicator as active microphone mute. Press the headset’s mute control to enable the microphone, then confirm the PS5 Input Device and level.
Will a USB extension cable fix a defective wireless adapter?
No. An extension cable only creates distance from nearby USB 3.0 devices or other wireless sources, which can reduce interference. It cannot repair a damaged adapter, headset radio or connector.
