Most iPhone music problems have one of four causes: Sync Library is off or connected to the wrong Apple Account, a track is unavailable or restricted, the original file is missing, or a computer-to-iPhone sync is failing. Start by identifying which symptom you have, then use the matching fix. For Apple Music subscription libraries, enable Sync Library on every device and use the same Apple Account. For purchased or locally imported files, check the track’s cloud status, repair the source file, or use Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes to transfer it. The steps below let you isolate one bad song without repeatedly deleting an entire library.
Which music problem is happening on your iPhone?
The fastest fix depends on the scope of the failure. Before changing settings, decide whether the issue affects the whole library, several songs, or one track.

| Symptom | Most likely area to check | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Your library or many songs are missing | Apple Account, subscription, or Sync Library | Confirm the account and turn on Sync Library on every device |
| A song is gray or cannot be selected | Restrictions, catalog availability, hidden item, or missing original | Read the source computer’s Cloud Status |
| Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes reports a sync error | Software, media-file locations, security software, or a damaged track | Update devices, consolidate media, then sync a small batch |
| Only one imported or purchased song fails | That item’s account record or source file | Redownload the purchase or reimport the original |
Do not begin by turning Sync Library off and on or deleting a large library. Those actions can remove downloaded music from the iPhone and force a lengthy resynchronization.
How do I turn on Apple Music Sync Library correctly?
Sync Library is the correct transport for Apple Music subscription content. Every device must use the same Apple Account associated with the subscription, and each device must be online while the library updates.
#1 Best Overall
- Use the Lightning to USB Cable to charge and sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with Lightning connector to your Mac or Windows PC.
- This USB 2.0 cable connects your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with Lightning connector to your computer’s USB port for syncing and charging. Or you can connect to the Apple USB Power Adapter for convenient charging from a wall outlet.
- USB power adapters sold separately.
- Cable Length: 1 meter or 3 feet
Check the Apple Account and subscription
- Verify that the iPhone, Mac, and Windows computer are signed in with the same Apple Account.
- Confirm that the account has the Apple Music subscription that contains the songs. A different account can make tracks appear unavailable even when the titles are visible.
- Connect each device to the internet and leave it connected while changes propagate.
Enable Sync Library on an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Music.
- Turn on Sync Library.
Enable Sync Library on a Mac
- Open the Music app.
- Choose Music in the menu bar, then Settings.
- In General, select Sync Library.
Enable Sync Library in the Windows Apple Music app
- Open the Apple Music app and open Sidebar Actions.
- Choose Settings, then General.
- Turn on Sync Library.
After enabling it, allow time for the source computer to upload or match tracks and for the iPhone to receive the updated library. A large collection can take substantially longer than a few albums.
What should I do when songs are missing from the iPhone?
Check the library on the Mac or PC first. The source computer shows whether a track is waiting, unavailable, or no longer connected to its original file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Inspect Cloud Status and Cloud Download
In the Songs view on the source Mac or PC, display the Cloud Status and Cloud Download information. These columns help distinguish a song that is still being processed from one that cannot be matched or downloaded. If the library has not sent recent changes, use Update Cloud Library on that computer, then keep it online while the update completes.
Use the least destructive reset first
Apple says switching Sync Library off and on can resolve persistent synchronization problems. Back up first: turning the feature off removes downloaded music, and a large library may take a long time to download again after it is re-enabled. Apple also explicitly warns that “Apple Music isn’t a backup service.” Treat a separate backup of irreplaceable local files as essential rather than relying on the cloud library alone.

Check for account or purchase mismatches
If a purchased song is missing, sign in with the Apple Account that bought it and try downloading it again. A subscription library tied to another account will not automatically become available merely because the same iPhone is being used.
Why is a song gray or unable to play?
A gray title is a diagnostic clue, not a single error. It can indicate a different Apple Account, an explicit-content restriction, a hidden song, removal from the Apple Music catalog, or a missing local original.
Read the track’s status on the source computer
- Exclamation point: The library cannot find the original file. Use Locate or Find Files to point Music or iTunes to it, or reimport the file from its original location.
- Waiting: The track has not finished syncing. Leave the source computer online, run Update Cloud Library, and wait for processing to finish.
- No longer available: The catalog item was removed. Search for an available version, then replace the unavailable entry.
Resolve restrictions and hidden items
Review the iPhone’s content restrictions if the gray track is explicit and restrictions are set to block explicit material. Change the setting only when appropriate for the device user. Also check whether the song was hidden in the account’s purchase or library view, and unhide it before attempting another download.
Repair a local import
For a CD rip or another imported file, a broken library entry does not recreate the audio. Delete the unusable entry from the library and import the original file again. If the original has been moved, renamed, or stored on a disconnected drive, restore access to that location before reimporting.

How do I fix a song that will not play even though it appears?
First determine whether the failure follows the account, the catalog item, or the file itself. Try another version of the same song and compare the result on the source computer and the iPhone.
- Confirm the iPhone is signed in to the Apple Account that owns the purchase or subscription.
- Check for explicit-content restrictions and unhide the item if necessary.
- Look at Cloud Status on the source computer. An exclamation point requires locating or reimporting the original; “Waiting” requires more time and an online source; “No longer available” requires an alternative catalog version.
- For a purchased iTunes Store track, redownload it from the purchasing account.
- For a CD or other local import, remove the broken library entry and import a known-good copy from the original source.
If other songs play normally and only one imported file fails, replacing that file is usually safer than rebuilding the entire library.

Computer sync failures are separate from Apple Music catalog availability. Update both sides, make the media library’s file locations consistent, and isolate the track or batch that causes the error.
Prepare the Mac or iPhone
- Update macOS and iOS. On macOS Mojave or earlier, update iTunes instead of the Music app.
- Consolidate the media files so the library uses one location rather than scattered folders or disconnected drives.
- Temporarily check whether third-party security software is blocking the connection or media transfer, then retry using the software’s documented safe settings.
Find a problem track by batching
- Sync a small group of songs that you know should work.
- If that succeeds, add another small group.
- When the error returns, divide the last group until one track or a few tracks remain.
- Redownload a purchased item or reimport an imported file that triggers the failure, then retry the sync.
This approach preserves the rest of the library and identifies whether the failure is caused by a particular file rather than by the iPhone.

How do I sync music with the Apple Devices app in Windows?
On current Windows systems, the Apple Devices app can transfer music over a data-capable USB or USB-C connection, and it can also use Wi-Fi after setup. It is intended for music stored on the computer; Apple Music subscription songs cannot be manually synced this way while Sync Library is enabled.
- Connect the iPhone with a USB or USB-C cable that supports data, not charging only.
- Open Apple Devices and select the iPhone in the sidebar.
- Choose the music section and select the playlists, artists, albums, or other items to transfer.
- Start the sync and keep the iPhone connected until it completes.
If the songs are Apple Music subscription items, use Sync Library instead of selecting them for a manual Apple Devices transfer. A cable cannot fix an account mismatch, a catalog removal, or a missing local file.
How do I sync music with iTunes on an older Mac or Windows PC?
Older Windows PCs and Macs running macOS Mojave or earlier may still use iTunes. The labels differ slightly from Apple Devices, but the workflow is the same: select the iPhone, choose Music, select content, and apply the sync.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer and open iTunes.
- Click the iPhone button or device entry.
- Choose Music.
- Enable music syncing and select the items to transfer.
- Click Sync and wait for the operation to finish.
After an initial USB setup, iTunes can offer Wi-Fi syncing when the computer and iPhone share a network. For automatic Wi-Fi syncing, iTunes must remain open and the iPhone must be connected to power. If Wi-Fi is unreliable, return to a wired data connection while troubleshooting.

Which remedy should I use for my situation?
| Music source | Transport | Use when | Do not expect it to fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Music subscription | Sync Library | The same Apple Account and subscription are active on all devices | A missing catalog item, blocked explicit content, or an unavailable local file |
| iTunes Store purchase | Redownload through the purchasing account, or computer sync for a local copy | The purchased item is missing or needs to be restored | A purchase made under a different Apple Account |
| CD rip or other local import | Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes over USB/USB-C or Wi-Fi | The original file is available and the library entry is healthy | A file whose original location cannot be found |
| Any source with a sync error | Small-batch wired sync first | You need to identify a bad track or software/connection issue | Catalog availability or account authorization problems |
What should I check before trying the fix again?
- All devices use the same Apple Account where cloud music is involved.
- Sync Library is enabled on the iPhone and the source computer for Apple Music content.
- The source computer is online and has completed Update Cloud Library.
- Cloud Status does not show an exclamation point, “Waiting,” or “No longer available” without a corresponding repair.
- Purchased tracks are being redownloaded from the purchasing account.
- Imported tracks still exist at their original location or have been reimported.
- Windows wired syncing uses a data-capable USB or USB-C cable.
- macOS, iOS, Apple Devices, or iTunes is up to date for the platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Apple Music replace a backup of my music?
No. Apple states that Apple Music is not a backup service. Keep an independent copy of valuable imported or purchased files, especially before resetting Sync Library.
Why does Wi-Fi syncing work only sometimes in iTunes?
Wi-Fi syncing depends on the computer and iPhone sharing a network, with iTunes open. Automatic syncing also requires the iPhone to be connected to power, so a phone that is unplugged may wait until the next eligible session.
Will a charging-only cable sync songs to an iPhone?
No. Wired transfer requires a USB or USB-C cable that carries data as well as power. Replace a cable that charges the phone but is not detected by Apple Devices, Finder, or iTunes.
What is the safest way to find one song causing a sync failure?
Start with a small group of known-good tracks and add music in batches. Narrow the failing batch until the offending item is isolated, then redownload a purchase or reimport the original file instead of rebuilding the whole library.
