A missing NPU or Windows AI feature on a Ryzen AI laptop has three common explanations: the specific PC is not eligible, the NPU driver is missing or wrong, or Windows and the application have a separate component or runtime requirement. Fix the problem in that order. Identify the exact laptop and Windows build, check the feature’s hardware requirements, install the laptop maker’s validated NPU package (or AMD’s package when appropriate), confirm that Task Manager shows NPU0, then update Windows and the feature or developer runtime.
Why is my Ryzen AI NPU or Windows AI feature missing?
The Ryzen AI name does not by itself guarantee that every Windows AI function will be available. A laptop can have an NPU that Windows is not detecting, a correctly installed NPU but insufficient hardware for Copilot+ features, or a working NPU while a Windows component, app, API, rollout, or developer runtime is missing.

How do I identify the laptop and the exact failure?
Record the machine and symptom before changing drivers. Processor family, the full PC design, Windows build, OEM packaging, and the specific API or feature can all change the diagnosis.

- Write down the complete laptop model as shown on its underside, invoice, or manufacturer utility. Do not stop at a family name such as “Ryzen AI.”

Settings > System > Aboutand record the processor, installed RAM, system type, and Windows edition. - Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and note the Windows version and OS build. - Name the missing item precisely: for example, an NPU entry in Task Manager, a particular Copilot+ experience, a Windows AI API, or a developer application error.
- Open
Device Managerand record any warning icon, unknown device, or driver version. Windows does not use one universal label for every Ryzen AI generation, so capture the text that your system actually displays.
This information also gives the laptop manufacturer or Microsoft support a reproducible starting point instead of an ambiguous “AI is missing” report.
Does the laptop meet Copilot+ hardware requirements?
If the missing function is a Copilot+ experience, check eligibility before reinstalling software. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 specification page says Copilot+ PCs require an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (40+ TOPS), at least 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and at least 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage; it lists AMD Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series among compatible processor families. These are class requirements, not a promise that every feature works on every model.

Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and system requirements as the current eligibility reference. If the PC fails one of these conditions, a driver reinstall cannot turn it into a Copilot+ PC. If it passes, continue with driver detection and the named feature’s own requirements.
How do I install the correct Ryzen AI NPU driver?
Start with the laptop maker’s support page for the exact model. AMD says laptop owners should prefer OEM-provided drivers because they are customized and validated for system-specific features and optimizations. A generic package can be useful when the OEM package is unavailable or outdated, but it must match the processor generation and Windows version.

Use the OEM package first
- On the manufacturer’s support site, search by the complete model or serial number rather than by “Ryzen AI.”
- Select the installed Windows edition and version, then download the package identified as the NPU, Ryzen AI, or neural-processing driver.
- Read the release notes for supported processor families and restart requirements. Disconnecting from third-party driver utilities helps prevent them from replacing the validated package.
- Install the package as an administrator and restart Windows when prompted.
AMD’s guidance is explicit: “AMD recommends OEM-provided drivers which are customized and validated for their system-specific features and optimizations.” The recommendation is especially important on laptops whose firmware, power profiles, and AI features depend on the manufacturer’s package. Install AMD’s package when it is a match
AMD’s Ryzen AI Software installation instructions specify NPU driver version 32.0.203.280 or newer. The same documentation identifies 32.0.203.376 as a production driver for Phoenix, Hawk Point, Strix, Strix Halo, and Krackan Point. Those are documented version references, not a guarantee that they are the newest package for your laptop; check the current AMD release notes and the model’s support page before choosing a version.

- Download the NPU driver ZIP from the applicable AMD Ryzen AI documentation or support package.
- Extract the ZIP to a local folder. Do not run the installer from inside the compressed archive.
- Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and change to the extracted folder.
- Run
npu_sw_installer.exe. - Allow the installer to finish, then restart Windows even if it does not insist on a restart.
The step-by-step procedure and version guidance are documented in AMD’s Ryzen AI Software Windows ML installation instructions. If the installer reports that the package is unsupported, stop rather than forcing it; return to the exact-model OEM package.
How can I verify that Windows detects the NPU?
After rebooting, open Task Manager > Performance and look for NPU0. AMD uses that view as the verification step after installation.

- NPU0 is present: the base NPU driver is being exposed to Windows. A missing AI feature now points to eligibility, Windows components, the app, or a feature-specific API requirement.
- NPU0 is absent: record what Device Manager shows, including any warning icon and driver details. Recheck that the package matches the laptop model and Windows version, then use the OEM support channel.
- The installer completed but detection did not change: do not assume success from the installer message alone. Reboot, check Task Manager again, and compare the installed driver version with the package documentation.
There is no single Device Manager label or universal repair command that applies to every Ryzen AI generation. Avoid deleting unrelated devices or using generic driver-cleaner tools unless the laptop manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.
Why can an AI feature remain missing after the NPU driver works?
A working NPU is only one layer. Microsoft services built-in Copilot+ AI components independently through Windows Update, while applications and developer tools can require their own packages.

Settings > Windows Update. - Select
Check for updatesand install all applicable updates, including optional updates that your organization or manufacturer approves. - Restart and check the named AI feature again. Copilot+ components can be serviced separately from the base NPU driver.
Microsoft describes this independent servicing model in its Windows Copilot+ AI components update guidance. A current driver therefore does not prove that the Windows component used by a feature is installed or fully rolled out.
Check developer and Windows ML prerequisites separately
For a developer application using Windows ML, AMD lists Windows 11 version 24H2 (build 26100 or newer), the NPU driver, and the Windows App SDK as separate elements of the setup. These are developer prerequisites, not universal requirements for every Windows AI feature.

- Confirm that
winverreports Windows 11 24H2/build 26100 or newer when the application’s documentation calls for it. - Install the Windows App SDK version required by that application.
- Match the application’s package, runtime, and architecture requirements; a driver-only installation does not supply them.
Use AMD’s Windows ML installation guide for that developer setup, and follow the application’s own documentation for package versions.

No. Microsoft’s Windows AI API troubleshooting guidance gives feature- and API-specific hardware advice, so one successful NPU check cannot be generalized to every API. The page also states a Windows 11 25H2 build requirement for its Phi Silica validation scenario; that condition is scoped to that scenario, not a universal unlock for all AI features.

What should I do for each common symptom?
Match the symptom to the layer that can actually cause it instead of applying every fix at once.

What mistakes should I avoid when repairing NPU support?
- Do not equate branding with eligibility. “Ryzen AI” identifies a product family, while Copilot+ eligibility depends on the complete hardware configuration and Microsoft’s current requirements.
- Do not install a desktop package blindly on a laptop. OEM firmware and power tuning can require a customized driver.
- Do not treat a developer guide as a universal Windows checklist. Windows App SDK and Windows ML requirements apply to the applications that use them.
- Do not use one feature’s build requirement for every feature. API support and Windows build requirements vary.
- Do not trust an installer’s completion message without checking NPU0. Task Manager confirms whether Windows actually exposes the device.
- Do not promise that a newer number is always better. Validate the version against the laptop’s support page and AMD’s current release notes.
When should I contact the laptop manufacturer?
Contact the OEM when a model-matched package is unavailable, the NPU remains absent after installation and reboot, or the generic AMD installer rejects the system. Provide the full model, processor, Windows edition and build, installed driver version, the exact missing feature, and a screenshot or transcription of the Device Manager state. This lets support distinguish a packaging or firmware issue from a feature that the configuration was never eligible to receive.
If the NPU is visible and the failure is confined to one Windows API or application, use that product’s support path instead. Include the same system details and the API or app version so its team can check component, runtime, and rollout requirements rather than repeating NPU-driver installation.

Can I use AMD’s generic NPU driver on any Ryzen AI laptop?
No. Laptop designs can require an OEM package with model-specific validation, firmware integration, and power tuning. Use the generic package only when its supported processor family and Windows version match your system and the manufacturer does not provide a suitable package.
Does seeing NPU0 in Task Manager prove that Copilot+ features will work?
It proves that Windows is exposing an NPU, not that the PC meets every Copilot+ or application requirement. Memory, storage, NPU performance, Windows components, feature rollout, software version, and region can still determine availability.
What information should I send to support for a missing NPU?
Send the complete laptop model, processor name, Windows edition and build from winver, the installed NPU driver version, and the exact Device Manager warning or entry. Also name the feature or application that fails and whether Task Manager shows NPU0 after a restart.
Why does a Windows ML program still fail after I install the NPU driver?
