If Windows shows Microsoft repair error 0x80070422, the usual cause is that the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. Open the service settings, change Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart your PC, and check for updates again.

Check the characters on your screen first. The commonly documented code is 0x80070422; the title form 0X080070422 contains an extra zero and may be a transcription error. The exact code determines which repair path applies.

What error 0x80070422 means

Microsoft Support identifies 0x80070422 as a Windows Update service that is disabled or stopped. Microsoft Learn classifies the code as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED and explains: “This issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or isn’t running.” Windows therefore cannot contact the update mechanism needed to search for, download, or install updates.

This is a service-state problem, not proof that your files are damaged or that malware is present. The first repair is to restore the service’s startup setting and run it manually. If it stops again, the failure may involve update components, permissions, storage, system time, or an operating-system version that is no longer supported.

Confirm the code before making changes

Read the complete message again, including every zero and letter. If it says 0x80070422, use the procedure below. If it shows a different code, do not assume these steps address it; Windows error codes that look similar can identify different services or installation stages.

Prepare for the repair

  • Sign in to an account with administrator rights. Changing a Windows service normally requires elevation.
  • Save open work and close programs before restarting or clearing update-cache files.
  • Connect the PC to reliable power, especially during an update or restart.
  • Make sure the system drive has free space. An update can fail after the service is repaired if Windows cannot download or unpack its files.
  • Record the exact error text and when it appears, such as while checking for updates, installing an update, or upgrading Windows. That detail helps distinguish a service problem from a later installation failure.

Primary fix: enable and start Windows Update

These are the direct manual steps Microsoft recommends for a disabled or stopped Windows Update service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Services console. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows asks.
  2. Locate Windows Update. In the list, find the entry named Windows Update. Do not change an unrelated service simply because its name contains the word “update.”
  3. Open its properties. Right-click Windows Update and select Properties. The General tab displays the current service state and startup type.
  4. Change startup type. Set Startup type to Automatic. This tells Windows to make the service available when the operating system starts rather than leaving it disabled.
  5. Start the service. If the status shows Stopped, select Start. If Start is unavailable while the service is already running, leave it running and continue.
  6. Save the change. Select Apply, then OK. If Windows reports an error while applying the setting, note the message; it indicates a permissions or service-configuration issue that needs separate attention.
  7. Restart the computer. A restart reloads the service configuration and clears temporary state that may have kept the service from running.
  8. Check for updates. Open Windows Update and select Check for updates. On Windows 11, the path is generally Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 10, it is generally Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Labels can vary slightly by release.

If the service starts and Windows Update completes normally, no registry edit or third-party repair program is required. Keep the startup type at Automatic unless your organization deliberately manages Windows Update through an administrative policy.

If 0x80070422 returns

A service that repeatedly stops may be a symptom of a damaged update cache or another condition that prevents Windows Update from completing its work. Work through these branches in order, testing Windows Update after each one.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Use the built-in troubleshooter before attempting a component reset. In current Windows 11 releases, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and run it. Follow the proposed corrections, restart if requested, and check for updates again.

If your edition uses a different Settings layout, search Settings for troubleshoot and choose the Windows Update troubleshooter supplied by Microsoft. A troubleshooter can identify configuration problems, but it does not guarantee that every underlying component will be repaired.

Reset the Windows Update cache carefully

Microsoft’s update guidance documents a cache-reset sequence: stop Windows Update, clear the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and start Windows Update again. Use this only after the basic service fix and troubleshooter have failed.

  1. Open services.msc again, right-click Windows Update, and choose Stop. Wait until the status changes so files are no longer being used by the service.
  2. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar. This folder stores temporary Windows Update data.
  3. Delete the contents inside SoftwareDistribution, not the folder itself. Administrator confirmation may be required. If Windows says a file is in use, close update-related windows, restart, and repeat the stop-and-clear sequence rather than forcing deletion.
  4. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, select Properties, confirm Startup type is still Automatic, and select Start.
  5. Restart Windows and run Check for updates again.

Cache deletion removes temporary update data; it does not remove your personal documents. The next check may take longer because Windows must obtain fresh update files. For a broader component reset, follow Microsoft’s current Windows Update component-reset instructions instead of improvising additional service or registry changes.

Check date, time, and time zone

Incorrect automatic date or time can interfere with update communication and validation. In Settings, open the date and time page, enable automatic time and automatic time-zone options where available, select Sync now if shown, and retry Windows Update. If a work or school administrator controls these settings, contact that administrator rather than overriding the policy.

Check storage and restart conditions

Confirm that the system drive has enough free space for downloaded and unpacked updates. Remove or move only files you recognize, then restart before trying again. Do not interrupt a restart or an update installation simply because the progress percentage appears unchanged; allow the process time to complete.

Check permissions and management policies

If the Startup type immediately changes back to Disabled, or Start produces an access-denied message, the service may be controlled by an administrator, security policy, or damaged permissions. On a work-managed PC, ask IT to verify the Windows Update policy. On a personal PC, use an administrator account and Microsoft’s current repair guidance rather than changing registry values at random.

Windows 10 support changed the long-term answer

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Repairing 0x80070422 can restore the service, but it does not restore a discontinued support lifecycle.

If the affected computer is running Windows 10, check whether its hardware and edition qualify for an upgrade to Windows 11 or another currently supported Windows release. Migration may be the appropriate long-term resolution even when the service itself can be started. Back up important files and verify application and hardware compatibility before changing operating systems.

Recovery media: useful, but not a direct cure

A USB flash drive for Windows recovery can provide recovery or upgrade media when Windows cannot boot reliably or an upgrade needs additional space. Microsoft notes that a USB drive may be needed during an upgrade when a device has a small hard drive.

Recovery media does not directly enable the Windows Update service and will not, by itself, remove error 0x80070422. Treat it as a contingency: create or obtain appropriate media before a planned migration, keep a backup of personal files, and use Microsoft’s instructions for the specific Windows edition. Do not erase the existing installation until you have confirmed that the media boots and that your files are backed up.

Which approach fits your situation?

Approach Directness Risk to system components Administrator access Recovery media needed? Supported operating system required?
Enable and start Windows Update in Services Directly addresses a disabled or stopped service Low when only the documented setting is changed Usually yes No No, but unsupported Windows may still lack updates
Windows Update troubleshooter Checks common configuration problems Low; it applies guided corrections May request elevation No Works only within the capabilities of the installed release
Clear SoftwareDistribution contents Addresses corrupted or stale temporary update data Moderate; follow the stop-clear-start order Yes No No, although unsupported releases remain unsupported
Upgrade or reinstall using USB recovery media Addresses broader operating-system failure or migration Highest; backup and edition checks are essential Yes Yes Target release must be supported and compatible

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the wrong code. The extra zero in 0X080070422 matters. Verify whether the screen actually says 0x80070422 before changing services.
  • Changing the wrong service. Select the entry named Windows Update exactly. Do not disable other services as a precaution.
  • Starting without changing Startup type. A one-time Start can be undone by the next reboot if the service remains Disabled. Set it to Automatic and save the setting.
  • Deleting the entire SoftwareDistribution folder. Microsoft’s cache step calls for clearing its contents after stopping Windows Update. Leave the folder itself in place.
  • Resetting components while the service is active. Stop Windows Update first. Files in use may not clear and can leave the reset incomplete.
  • Assuming a repaired service means a supported PC. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025; service repair does not extend that date.
  • Expecting a USB drive to fix the code automatically. Recovery media is for recovery or upgrade scenarios, not a direct service repair.
  • Applying random registry edits. Official guidance does not promise that one registry change or one repair utility universally fixes this error. Unverified edits can create additional startup or update problems.

When to seek additional help

Escalate to Microsoft support, your organization’s IT administrator, or a qualified technician when the service cannot be started even with administrator rights, the Startup type reverts to Disabled, the troubleshooter reports an unresolved policy or permission error, or Windows fails to boot after an update attempt. Provide the exact code, Windows edition and version, when the error appears, the steps already completed, and any message shown when you select Start.

If the PC is on Windows 10, include your migration decision in that support conversation. A technician may recommend moving to a supported release rather than spending time repairing an update path that no longer receives free Windows 10 security updates.

Final checklist

  1. Verify the exact code is 0x80070422, not 0X080070422 or another value.
  2. Open services.msc and open Windows Update properties.
  3. Set Startup type to Automatic.
  4. Select Start when the service is stopped, then choose Apply and OK.
  5. Restart the PC and select Check for updates.
  6. If the error returns, run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
  7. If necessary, stop Windows Update, clear the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, start the service, restart, and retry.
  8. Verify automatic date and time, available storage, administrator permissions, and whether the installed Windows release is still supported.
