Most Arctis Nova 3X problems are caused by the USB-C dongle being in the wrong mode, Windows or console audio routing, a muted or poorly seated detachable microphone, wireless interference, or a pairing state that needs to be rebuilt. Start by matching the dongle switch to the platform, connect it directly, power on the headset, and confirm the connection chime and slow LED blink. For a microphone failure, check the physical mute and microphone seating before changing software permissions. The sequence below separates host settings from headset hardware so you can avoid replacing a working headset.
What should I check first when the Nova 3X has no audio or microphone?
Establish the connection path before changing settings. The Nova 3X has two wireless paths: a low-latency 2.4 GHz USB-C dongle and Bluetooth. The dongle’s physical mode switch is critical: Xbox mode is for Xbox, while PC mode is for PC, PlayStation 5, and a docked Nintendo Switch.

- Remove unnecessary USB hubs, extension cables, and adapters while troubleshooting. A direct connection gives the dongle the clearest power and radio path.
- Turn the headset on and listen for the connection chime. A slowly blinking LED indicates an established wireless state; a missing chime means you should fix the connection before changing game or chat settings.
- Set the headset volume above zero and check the host’s master volume, mute state, and output device.
How do I connect the Nova 3X to Xbox, PC, PS5, or a docked Switch?
Use the 2.4 GHz dongle for consoles and computers when you want the intended gaming connection. The same dongle works across platforms, but its switch must be set correctly.
Xbox setup
- Slide the dongle’s Wireless Mode Switch to Xbox.
- Plug the dongle directly into the Xbox console.
- Power on the Nova 3X with the Power button.
- Wait for the connection chime and a slow LED blink.
- Open the console’s audio or accessories settings and verify the Nova 3X is selected for chat input and output if the console does not switch automatically.
If the headset powers on but there is no chime, remove the dongle, confirm the switch is on Xbox, reconnect it, and test another USB port. Do not leave the switch in PC mode for an Xbox connection.

How do I pair the Nova 3X over Bluetooth?
Bluetooth pairing starts from a powered headset. The device name to select is Arctis Nova 3X Wireless.
- Power on the headset.
- Press the Power button once while it is already on. This switches the headset between Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz modes.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet, or computer.
- Select Arctis Nova 3X Wireless.
- Wait for the slow blue LED blink and play a test sound.
SteelSeries documents that you can switch between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth on the fly with the Power button. If a phone shows an old or incomplete pairing, remove the saved Nova 3X entry, switch Bluetooth off and on, then repeat the pairing sequence.
Why is the Nova 3X microphone not working?
A silent microphone needs two kinds of checks: physical checks on the headset and input routing on the host. Perform them in that order so a muted microphone is not mistaken for a driver failure.

Check the headset itself
- Toggle the headset mute control and make sure its mute indicator is not active.
- Remove and firmly reseat the detachable ClearCast microphone. It must be fully inserted to make electrical contact.
- Inspect the microphone boom, connector, and windscreen for damage or obstruction.
- Raise microphone level or sidetone only after confirming that the host is receiving an input signal.
Fix Windows 10 or Windows 11 microphone permissions
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Enable Microphone access.
- Enable Let apps access your microphone.
- Enable Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- Go to Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the Nova 3X.
- Run Windows’ built-in microphone test and speak at a normal distance from the boom.
If the test meter never moves, Windows is not receiving a signal. Microsoft recommends updating or reinstalling audio drivers when the microphone is not detected. Restart the PC after a driver change, then repeat the input test before opening a game or chat application.
Check console routing
- On Xbox, inspect the headset device and microphone-monitoring settings and confirm the Nova 3X is the active chat device.
- On PlayStation, set the Nova 3X as the input microphone and watch the console input meter.
- In any game, check its separate voice-chat input selection; a game can override the operating system’s default.
Use a second device to isolate the fault
Test the microphone through another supported host, using Bluetooth or the dongle as appropriate. If it works elsewhere, the original console, PC permission, driver, or application routing is responsible. If it fails on multiple hosts after reseating and unmuting, a damaged detachable microphone, connector, or headset circuit becomes more likely.
What should I do when there is no sound, muffled sound, or audio in only one ear?
Start with mode, output selection, and volume; then test a second connection. A fault that follows the headset across hosts is different from a fault that stays with one USB port or application.
No sound in either ear
- Confirm the dongle switch matches the platform and that the headset gives the connection chime.
- Connect the dongle directly rather than through a hub.
- Choose the Nova 3X as the host output device.
- Raise both the headset volume and the host’s master volume.
- Pause Bluetooth on nearby devices that may be receiving the audio instead.
- Test another USB port or Bluetooth connection.
Muffled or distorted sound
- Check that the correct 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth path is active; an incorrect mode can prevent normal routing.
- Move the dongle away from dense clusters of USB devices and metal obstructions.
- Test with another application or audio source to rule out a low-quality stream or game-specific setting.
- Inspect the earcup openings for debris or physical damage.
Only one speaker works
- Open the host’s sound properties and check left-right stereo balance. Both channels should have equal levels.
- Test a different application and a second host.
- Try Bluetooth if you were using the dongle, or the dongle if you were using Bluetooth.
- Inspect the affected earcup and cable or adapter for physical damage.
If one-sided audio remains on every host and connection type, software balance is unlikely to be the cause. Document the result of the cross-device test before seeking a hardware remedy.
Why does the Nova 3X keep disconnecting or dropping out?
Dropouts are usually reduced by shortening the radio path, removing interference, updating firmware, and rebuilding the pairing. A general wireless guideline lists a usual range of about 10 m; treat that as support guidance, not an independently measured Nova 3X specification.

Improve the wireless path
- Stay within the practical range of the console or computer and avoid walking behind walls or large metal objects.
- Keep the dongle away from Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, and microwave ovens, all of which can add radio interference.
- Plug the dongle directly into the host rather than a hub or monitor port.
- Try a different USB port if the current port is surrounded by other active wireless or storage devices.
Update and re-pair
- Install the latest firmware offered for the Nova 3X through SteelSeries’ supported device software.
- Restart the host and headset after the update.
- Follow the re-pairing procedure in the next section if the connection still drops or the dongle is intermittently detected.
Note when the dropout occurs. A failure only at long distance points to range or interference; a failure at the desk with a direct connection points more toward firmware, USB, power, or hardware issues.
How do I re-pair the Nova 3X dongle?
The headset and dongle are paired by default, but a lost pairing can be restored manually. Keep the dongle connected during the entire procedure.
- Connect the dongle to the host and leave its mode switch set for that platform.
- Hold the dongle’s Pairing button for four seconds.
- If the headset is on, press the headset Power button three times. You should hear 2.4G pairing mode, and the LED ring should blink rapidly.
- If the headset is off, hold its Power button for four seconds instead.
- Wait for the Connected sound and a slow LED blink.
If pairing does not complete, move the headset close to the dongle, disconnect other wireless audio devices, repeat the four-second dongle hold, and make sure you are using the correct Xbox or PC mode for the host.
How do I charge the headset, read the battery LED, or reset it?
Charge through the headset’s USB-C port. The guide’s LED ranges are green for 100–51%, yellow for 50–15%, orange for 14–6%, and red for 5–1%.
| LED color | Battery range | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Green | 100–51% | Normal use |
| Yellow | 50–15% | Plan a charge before a long session |
| Orange | 14–6% | Charge soon |
| Red | 5–1% | Connect USB-C power promptly |
If the headset will not power on, charge it first and then use the reset pinhole or button for 5–10 seconds, following the exact model procedure in SteelSeries’ hardware-reset guidance. A reset addresses a frozen control state; it does not repair a broken connector, battery, microphone, or speaker.

Should I replace a component or the whole headset?
The Nova 3X uses a detachable ClearCast microphone and includes a microphone windscreen, USB-C charging cable, and USB-C-to-A adapter. Those separable parts make a component replacement reasonable when cross-device testing identifies one damaged item.
Replace only a component when
- The microphone fails on multiple hosts but the speakers and wireless connection work normally.
- The windscreen is torn or permanently contaminated while the microphone itself works.
- The charging cable or USB-C-to-A adapter is visibly damaged and another compatible cable confirms the headset still charges.
Consider complete-headset service when
- Both audio channels fail across Bluetooth and dongle connections.
- The headset will not charge or power on after charging and a reset.
- Microphone and speaker failures occur together on more than one host.
- The USB-C port, earcup, or internal structure is physically damaged.
No published repair-success rate or cost comparison establishes that one option is universally better. Use the cross-device results, visible damage, warranty status, and the price of a genuine replacement part to make the decision.

Use the dongle for console gaming and situations where low latency and platform compatibility matter; use Bluetooth for phones, tablets, and convenient secondary-device listening. The Power button switches between the two modes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Characteristic | 2.4 GHz USB-C dongle | Bluetooth |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Xbox, PC, PS5, docked Switch | Phone, tablet, and Bluetooth-capable computer |
| Latency | Designed for lower-latency game audio | Usually higher and dependent on the host and codec |
| Setup | Choose Xbox or PC mode, connect the dongle, power on | Power on, press Power once, select Arctis Nova 3X Wireless |
| Best diagnostic value | Tests dongle mode, USB path, and console routing | Tests the headset independently of the dongle and console USB port |
Testing both paths is useful even when you plan to game over the dongle. If Bluetooth works while 2.4 GHz fails, investigate dongle mode, USB connection, firmware, or pairing. If both fail in the same way, inspect the headset itself.
How can I distinguish a host-setting problem from headset hardware failure?
Use a controlled three-test sequence rather than changing several settings at once.

What should I do when the basic checks do not solve the problem?
Use SteelSeries’ model-specific support articles for Nova 3 muffled sound, dongle detection, microphone failure, hardware reset, and pairing. Have the following information ready: platform, dongle switch position, whether the connection chime plays, LED behavior, Bluetooth result, Windows input-test result, and whether the fault follows the headset to another host.
- Do not repeatedly reset or re-pair before confirming the switch is in the correct Xbox or PC position.
- Do not replace the microphone until it has failed on a second host with permissions and mute state verified.
- Do not treat the general 10 m range guidance as a guaranteed distance in every room or radio environment.
- Keep the detachable parts, adapter, and charging cable together so each can be tested independently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Nova 3X with a USB hub?
It may work, but a hub adds another power and data path that can complicate detection and introduce interference. For diagnosis and the most reliable connection, plug the dongle directly into the console or computer first.
Why does my PC show the headset but my game still uses another microphone?
Games often keep their own input-device choice instead of following the Windows default. Select the Nova 3X inside the game’s voice or audio menu, then restart the game so it reloads the device list.
What does a rapidly blinking LED mean during pairing?
Rapid blinking indicates that the headset is actively searching during the 2.4 GHz pairing process. Leave the dongle connected and wait for the Connected sound and slow blink before testing audio.
Can a damaged windscreen cause a completely silent microphone?
A worn windscreen can affect protection and clarity, but it normally does not interrupt the electrical microphone connection. A fully silent mic is more likely to involve mute state, incomplete microphone seating, permissions, routing, or a damaged microphone assembly.
