How do I run Microsoft’s repair sequence for a failed June update?
Use the steps below in order. DISM repairs the Windows component store that Windows Update depends on; restarting lets pending actions finish; the SSU and system-file checks then address remaining servicing problems.
1. Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Enter this command exactly, including the spaces:
Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth - Press Enter and let the operation reach completion. It may pause at a percentage for several minutes. Do not close the window, terminate the process or power off the PC while it is running.
- Record the final message and any error code. Microsoft gives the same administrative command in its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
A successful DISM result does not install the June package by itself; it repairs the servicing image so Windows Update can try again. If DISM returns an error, keep that code and message rather than repeatedly launching the same command.
2. Restart once and allow pending actions to finish
Select Start > Power > Restart. Let Windows complete configuration before signing in and do not interrupt a “Working on updates” screen. Some June Windows 11 installations may perform one additional restart while Secure Boot certificates are replaced, so an extra reboot is not automatically evidence of failure.
3. Install the latest servicing stack update
Install the SSU that matches the Windows version you recorded. sfc /scannowWait for verification to reach 100 percent. If Windows reports that it repaired files, restart once and retry Windows Update. If it says some files could not be repaired, keep the result and the DISM message; those details determine whether recovery or repair installation is safer than more retries.
5. Retry the update and capture the result
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Allow the applicable June package to download and install without forcing a restart.
- When it finishes, return to Update history and confirm the KB and status.
- If it fails again, record the exact code, the KB and whether the failure occurred during download, installation, reboot or rollback. That information is more useful than repeating the same attempt.
What do errors 0x80073712 and 0x800f0993 mean?
Both codes indicate a servicing problem rather than a normal download glitch. Microsoft associates 0x80073712 with component-store corruption and 0x800f0993 with PSFX_E_REBASE_HYDRATION_CANDIDATES_MISSING.
0x80073712: component-store corruption
The component store contains the files and metadata Windows uses to assemble updates. Run DISM, restart, install the matching SSU and run the system-file check before trying the KB again. If DISM cannot complete, preserve its final error and move to recovery guidance instead of forcing repeated update attempts.
0x800f0993: missing rebase hydration candidates
This code has been reported on a small percentage of devices upgraded from Windows 10 22H2 or 21H2, or Windows 11 23H2, to Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. The same DISM, restart, SSU and file-repair sequence is the appropriate first response. Microsoft’s warning and the affected upgrade path are described in this report on the installation failures.
If the error remains after the sequence, check the applicable release-health page and KB for a safeguard hold or mitigation. Do not substitute a package for a different Windows version simply because its number looks similar.

Why did the PC restart more than once during the June update?
Windows 11 documentation says Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices began expiring in June 2026. Microsoft is delivering replacement certificates in phases, and some systems may restart one additional time while the certificate update is applied.
Wait if the progress screen is changing or the device is rebooting normally. Treat it as a likely servicing problem only when the computer is clearly hung for an extended period with no disk or screen activity, repeatedly rolls back, or displays an explicit error. In that case, record the message before using recovery options.
What should I do if Office, OneDrive or Recycle Bin changed after installation?
These are documented post-installation symptoms, not proof that the update failed. First install the latest applicable cumulative update, because Microsoft lists fixes released on and after July 14, 2026 before recommending rollback.
Office applications will not launch from a third-party program
Some third-party applications that use OLE automation may be unable to launch Microsoft Office applications or open documents after the Windows 10 June update. The failure can occur without an error message. Test opening the Office application directly from the Start menu; if that works, the automation path is the likely affected component. Check Windows Update for a later cumulative update and apply it before changing Office files or uninstalling the June package.

Recycle Bin confirmation shows a name such as $Rxxxxx.ext
Windows 10 may display an internal filename in the confirmation dialog when you delete one item from the Recycle Bin. The item’s normal name remains in the Recycle Bin. Install a later cumulative update before treating the dialog as data loss or changing Recycle Bin permissions.

OneDrive is unresponsive in elevated File Explorer
When File Explorer is running with administrative privileges, the OneDrive shortcut may be unresponsive, show blank properties or lack synchronization-status icons. Open File Explorer normally, without elevation, to check whether the symptom is limited to the elevated view. Then install the latest applicable cumulative update; Microsoft says the OneDrive and Recycle Bin issues were resolved in updates released on or after July 14, 2026, including KB5099539. Should I uninstall the June update?
Usually not as a first step. If the update installed successfully and the symptom matches a documented issue, install the later cumulative update that contains the resolution. Rollback is a recovery choice for a serious, reproducible failure when no applicable fix is available and you have recorded the KB, symptoms and error.
Check for a later fix first
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Review Update history for a cumulative update dated after June 9, 2026.
- Read Microsoft’s release-health entry for your exact Windows version to see whether the issue has a mitigation, resolution or safeguard hold.
Use the built-in uninstall path only when necessary
If you must test a rollback, go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, select the June KB you recorded and follow the prompts. Save work first and expect another restart. Uninstalling removes that security and quality update, so check for a replacement update and reinstall it when Microsoft publishes a corrected package.

What if DISM and the system-file check do not repair the component store?
Stop repeating failed servicing commands and preserve the DISM and SFC results. A damaged component store may require Windows Recovery options or an in-place repair installation using installation media for the same edition and architecture; those approaches replace damaged Windows components while aiming to retain personal files and installed applications, but they still require backups and careful version matching.
Before using recovery media, verify the exact edition, language and architecture in Settings > System > About, back up important files and disconnect encryption-recovery keys only according to your organization’s procedure. If the PC is managed by work or school, give the recorded KB and error code to the administrator rather than applying an unrelated image.

How do I check whether a newer Windows release is being offered?
Microsoft’s release-health pages are the authoritative source for open issues, mitigations and safeguard holds. Windows 11 version 26H2 reached general availability on September 29, 2026 through a phased rollout, so a device that has not been offered 26H2 should not be forced to upgrade merely to work around a June servicing failure.
Check the Windows 11 26H2 release-health page and Windows Update’s own offer. A phased rollout can make two otherwise similar PCs show different feature-update availability; that difference is not itself an error.

The standard DISM log is located at C:WindowsLogsDISMdism.log. Copy it after the command finishes, along with the exact KB and hexadecimal error, and avoid editing the original file.
Why does Windows Update offer a different KB on two PCs?
Windows Update selects packages by release, build, architecture and applicable servicing prerequisites. Compare each machine’s winver result and Update history; a different version or phased rollout can legitimately produce a different KB.
Does uninstalling the June update remove my personal files?
Removing a quality update is designed to roll back system changes, not delete personal documents, but you should still back up important files first. Applications or drivers installed after the update can be affected, and Windows may offer the same update again after a corrected release.
