Start by identifying which PC edition you own—original version 1.0, version 1.01, Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher, or Definitive Edition—because patches and replacement files are not interchangeable. Then apply Rockstar’s reversible checks: update Windows and graphics drivers, run the game as administrator, disable overlays and recorders, check security software, use an internal drive, and verify Steam files. For missing sound, set Windows playback to 44.1 kHz, 16-bit and restart. Apply Windows and driver updates
- Install current Windows updates and restart.
- Update the driver for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics device from the manufacturer’s supported channel, then restart again.
- Confirm that the game is installed on an internally connected drive. External or intermittently connected storage can cause loading failures and file-access timeouts.
Run with the right permissions
- Right-click

Remove overlay and security conflicts

Set the Windows default format

PCGamingWiki documents a release-specific missing-radio crash and audio path after downgrading. Its recommended approach is to replace the audio folder with the matching version 1.0 audio set. Treat that as a versioned repair: preserve an untouched copy, use files from the same release family, and do not copy a 1.0 audio folder into an unverified Steam, launcher, or Definitive Edition installation.
Older compatibility approaches
For stubborn modern-Windows sound problems, PCGamingWiki lists Windows 98/Me compatibility mode and older EAX Unified DLL versions as community approaches. They are not universal fixes. Test one change at a time, keep a restore copy, and undo it if the symptom changes from missing audio to a launch crash.
Why does GTA: San Andreas crash on launch or during play?

SilentPatch Build 34.1 is listed in 2026 documentation, while SpeedrunSilentPatch Build 12 (18 October 2026) is restricted to original PC 1.0. If a patch page says “1.0 only,” a Steam or launcher copy is the wrong target even if the game title is identical.
Install SpeedrunSilentPatch correctly when it matches
- Confirm that the game is the original PC version 1.0, not Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher, or Definitive Edition.
- Back up saves and the complete game directory.
- Download the supported Build 12 package from its maintainer’s page.
- Extract the files directly beside
gta_sa.exe. Do not leave them inside an additional folder such asSpeedrunSilentPatch. - Launch once with other ASI and DLL additions removed. Add those components back only after confirming the patched game starts.

How do I fix a black screen when entering or leaving an interior?
A black screen that appears during an interior transition can be the documented streaming deadlock, not a monitor failure. Compatible SilentPatch builds address this class of deadlock.
Separate a transition deadlock from a display signal loss

When to use ThirteenAG’s Widescreen Fix
PCGamingWiki distinguishes ThirteenAG’s Widescreen Fix as the utility for wider aspect-ratio, HUD, and FOV control. It is useful when the game fills the monitor but the radar, menus, or camera still look designed for 4:3.
