If googlenewsdecoder returns HTTP 429, Google is rate-limiting requests—not necessarily rejecting the link as invalid. For a batch, pass links as a list so the package can share one Google batchexecute POST across the articles, add an interval between article-page fetches, and retry 429 responses a limited number of times. That is not the same as making only one HTTP request: the decoder still needs per-article parameters, and pacing cannot guarantee Google will allow every request.
A fresh install can fail for a different reason: a reported compatibility issue affects googlenewsdecoder 0.2.1 with selectolax 1.0.0 or later. The documented workaround is to install selectolax<1.0 alongside the decoder. The right fix depends on whether you are seeing rate limiting during use or an import error before decoding starts.

HTTP 429 means the server is limiting the rate of requests. With googlenewsdecoder, that can happen when a job fetches Google News article pages too quickly, especially in a burst. A 429 is therefore a signal to slow down and handle the response as potentially temporary; it is not, by itself, proof that the Google News link is malformed or that the story is unavailable.
Google News RSS items use encoded redirect links rather than exposing the publisher’s URL directly. The package documentation puts it simply: “Google News wraps every story in an encoded link.” The decoder extracts parameters from a Google News article page and sends them to Google’s internal batchexecute endpoint to resolve the publisher URL. That endpoint is an implementation detail, not a stable public API, so its behavior can change.

Also distinguish a rate-limit failure from an import failure. If Python cannot import the package immediately after installation, changing request pacing will not help; check the dependency compatibility issue described below.
How can I decode a list of Google News links with one API call?
Give the decoder a list rather than calling it separately for every URL. The documented list implementation obtains decoding parameters for each article and shares one Google batchexecute POST across the batch. It can reduce repeated calls to that endpoint, but it does not eliminate the per-link work needed to obtain those parameters.
“One API call” can mean different things here. It may mean one call from your application to a decoder, one shared Google batch POST, or one request in total. The package’s documented batch behavior supports the second interpretation—not a guarantee of one total network request for an entire list. Plan request pacing and error handling around the article-page fetches as well as the shared POST.
Use list input for batches
Collect the Google News article URLs first, then submit them as one list using the package’s documented interface. The returned result is structured: a successful item contains a decoded_url, while a failed item contains a failure message. Preserve the original input URL alongside each result in your own job records so you can match failures to their inputs and retry selectively.

Add pacing for larger jobs
The PyPI documentation exposes an interval option for introducing a delay between article-page requests. Use it when processing a large list or when the IP address running the job is being rate-limited. The evidence does not establish a universally safe interval; Google controls access and its limits can vary. Treat pacing as a way to reduce bursts, not as a promise that 429 responses will stop.
Keep retries bounded
Retry a 429 as a potentially temporary condition, but set a finite retry limit. Record the input link, attempt count, and returned status or error message so repeated failures are diagnosable. If retries continue to produce rate limits, slow or pause the job and decide whether local request management remains practical. Avoid retrying indefinitely: it can add load without improving the result.

What should a robust batch workflow do?
A reliable workflow separates collection, decoding, and recovery. That makes it easier to identify whether a failed row reflects rate limiting, an unsupported input, an installation problem, or another decoding failure without losing the original feed data.
- Collect and preserve inputs. Store each original Google News URL as received. Do not replace it with an assumed publisher URL before decoding succeeds.
- Validate the input type. The package documentation covers Google News URLs in
news.google.com/read/,/articles/, and/rss/articles/forms. A publisher URL or unrelated redirect is not interchangeable with one of these Google News links. - Submit a list. Use list input for a batch so the implementation can share its documented
batchexecutePOST path rather than treating every article as a separate application-level job. - Set an interval when needed. For larger jobs, configure the documented delay between article-page fetches. Do not assume that a proxy or a particular delay guarantees access.
- Inspect each result. Associate successful
decoded_urlvalues and failure messages with their original URLs. A batch can contain useful successes even if some rows fail. - Retry selectively and finitely. Treat a 429 as retryable, apply bounded retries, and retain the outcome of each attempt. Do not repeatedly resubmit successful rows without a reason.
- Monitor changes after upgrades. Pin the working package and dependency versions in the project lockfile, then run a small smoke test after changing them. Google’s internal endpoint and package dependencies are both potential sources of change.
This workflow is deliberately conservative: neither the package documentation nor the dated implementation report establishes a guaranteed success rate, a universally safe request interval, or a comparative speed advantage. The appropriate batch size and pacing depend on the workload and the behavior Google returns.

Why might googlenewsdecoder fail after a fresh install?
A reported compatibility issue says googlenewsdecoder 0.2.1 imports an older parser module that was removed in selectolax 1.0.0. In that combination, the package can fail during import before it makes any Google request. That failure is separate from HTTP 429 and will not be fixed by adding a delay or retrying a URL.
The documented workaround is:
pip install googlenewsdecoder "selectolax<1.0"
This constrains the parser dependency to a version before the reported breaking change. Because package and dependency versions can change, pin the working versions in your project’s lockfile instead of relying on an unconstrained fresh install to reproduce the same environment. After an upgrade, run a small smoke test that imports the package and attempts to decode a known Google News link before running a large job.

When is a hosted decoder a better fit?
A hosted service is worth evaluating when operational simplicity, centralized retry handling, or processing feed URLs matters more than keeping decoding entirely local. The reported Apify Google News API & URL Decoder actor accepts Google News article links and RSS feed URLs, deduplicates repeated links, returns publisher URL and domain fields, and provides structured statuses. Examples include not_decoded: Google rate-limited, retry later and not_google_news_link.

- User Interface: Simple, fast and intuitive
Those statuses make failures visible as data rows rather than leaving an operator to infer what happened from an empty result. Feed acceptance and deduplication can also be useful when the input is a feed rather than a list already prepared by your application. A hosted service does not, however, turn the publisher URL into the story text: decoding identifies the destination URL; retrieving and processing the publisher’s article is a separate task.
Local package or hosted actor?
| Consideration | Local googlenewsdecoder | Reported Apify actor |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Open-source package runs in your environment; you manage dependency versions and request handling. | Hosted service; the provider operates the decoding service. |
| Batch behavior | List input shares one Google batchexecute POST across a batch, while article parameters are obtained per link. |
Accepts article links and RSS feed URLs; repeated links are deduplicated. |
| Rate-limit handling | Documented interval and optional HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKS5 proxy; callers should still handle 429s. |
Returns a status such as not_decoded: Google rate-limited, retry later; provider-managed pacing is a reason to consider it, not a guarantee against rate limits. |
| Failure visibility | Structured result with a decoded URL on success or a failure message. | Structured status rows, including reasons such as a rate limit or a non-Google News link. |
| Price cited in the October 2026 report | No per-link service price stated; infrastructure and maintenance costs depend on your setup. | Apify’s reported free-plan price was $0.80 per 1,000 decoded links; its reported Business-plan price was $0.60 per 1,000 decoded links. Recheck current prices and actor limits before relying on them. |
The right choice depends on what is costing you more: maintaining a local dependency and controlling request pacing, or paying a per-link fee for a hosted workflow. A dated report attributes 265,000 downloads in the month ending 2026-10-11 to PyPI statistics. That is a usage signal only; it does not measure reliability, decoding success, or speed. The same report says it had not benchmarked the package against other decoder tools, so there is no substantiated comparative performance figure to use in this decision.

What can go wrong besides rate limiting?
Not every failed result is a 429, and not every Google News-looking URL is necessarily an article link the decoder can process. Diagnose the failure from the result rather than treating every empty or unsuccessful decode as the same problem.
- Unsupported or unrelated URL: Check whether the input uses a documented Google News URL form. The hosted actor’s
not_google_news_linkstatus is an example of an explicit input-type failure. - Rate-limited request: Slow the job, keep retries bounded, and retain the failed input for later handling. Do not label the original URL invalid solely because the server returned 429.
- Import error: Check the installed decoder and parser versions. The reported 0.2.1 and
selectolax1.0.0 compatibility issue occurs before URL decoding. - Changed Google behavior: The decoding process relies on an internal endpoint, so a change in Google’s pages or endpoint can break assumptions. Keep the decoder behind a small adapter in your application so you can replace or update it without rewriting downstream processing.
- Successful decode, missing article content: A decoded URL is the publisher destination, not a downloaded article. Any content retrieval, access checks, or text extraction must happen separately.
How should you choose between the local and hosted paths?
Choose the local package when you need to keep the implementation in your own environment and can own dependency pinning, pacing, and retry logic. Use list input for batches, preserve per-link outcomes, and isolate the decoder behind an adapter because it depends on a Google endpoint that may change.

Consider a hosted actor when feed-level input, deduplication, provider-managed operations, or structured retry statuses would simplify your pipeline enough to justify a variable per-link cost. Before adopting it, verify current pricing and limits; the prices above were reported for Apify in October 2026, not guaranteed current rates. In either path, expect a decoded publisher URL—not the publisher’s article text—and make failures explicit rather than silently dropping links.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a decoded Google News URL contain the article text?
No. Decoding resolves the redirect to the publisher’s URL. Fetching the destination and extracting its contents are separate operations with their own availability and access constraints.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I pass an entire RSS feed to the local Python package?
The package documentation described here covers Google News article URL forms and list input. Feed URLs are explicitly supported by the reported hosted actor; do not assume the local package accepts a feed document unless its current documentation says so.
Will using a proxy stop Google News 429 errors?
No guarantee is established. The package exposes an optional HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKS5 proxy, but Google controls its rate limits; use pacing and bounded retries as well, and monitor outcomes.
Does googlenewsdecoder have a proven success rate or speed advantage?
No comparative benchmark or success-rate figure is established in the dated report. Its cited 265,000 downloads for the month ending 2026-10-11 indicates usage, not decoding quality or performance.
