LED bulbs, fluorescent fixtures, signs, monitors, and dimmers can pulse faster than your eyes notice. Start by recording a 5–10-second test under different lighting at 30 fps, then check whether the flicker is in the saved file or only on the iPhone display. Playback-only flicker requires a different troubleshooting path.
First, find out what is actually flickering
Before changing camera settings, separate a recording problem from a playback or display problem.

- Record 5–10 seconds under the conditions that produce the flicker.
- Open the clip in Photos and watch it on the iPhone.
- AirDrop or export the original file, then play it on another phone, computer, or TV.
- Compare it with a known-good video.

Do not change the iPhone’s recording frame rate as your first response to a video downloaded or received from somebody else.

Quick fixes for a new recording
- Change the light. Turn off the offending LED, fluorescent tube, dimmer, monitor, or sign. Move near a window or test a different light.
- Use ordinary Video mode. Avoid Slow Motion and Action mode while diagnosing.
- Set 30 fps. In Camera’s Video mode, tap the displayed resolution/frame-rate control and choose a 30-fps option if available.
- Lock exposure and focus. Tap and hold the subject until AE/AF Lock appears.
- Test Auto FPS. Turn it off temporarily and record another comparison clip.
- Inspect the saved clip. A preview can look different from the exported recording.
These settings are model-dependent. Apple documents frame-rate choices including 24, 25, 30, 60, and 120 fps on supported iPhones, along with Auto FPS and other recording controls in its current iPhone video settings guide.

Why LED and fluorescent lights make video flicker
Artificial lights may look steady to your eyes while their output rapidly rises and falls. The camera captures portions of those cycles at particular frame rates and exposure times. The result can be:
- Repeated brightening and darkening across the whole image.
- Horizontal dark bands or rolling stripes.
- Color changes as different parts of the light cycle are recorded.
Fluorescent lights commonly vary at 100 or 120 Hz. LED bulbs and signage can flicker at hundreds or thousands of hertz, depending on their driver and dimming method. A cheap LED, low-frequency dimmer, digital sign, stage light, or monitor may therefore flicker even when it appears stable in person. Sony describes this as a known imaging phenomenon under fluorescent, LED, sodium, and mercury lighting—not automatic evidence of a defective camera. See Sony’s explanation of flicker and banding.
Why 30 fps is the best US starting test
The United States generally uses 60-Hz mains power. Camera guidance for 60-Hz conditions commonly starts with shutter speeds of 1/60 or 1/120 second; Sony lists those values alongside 1/50 and 1/100 for 50-Hz regions in its movie-recording guidance.

Selecting 30 fps is therefore a practical first test based on the 60-Hz timing principle—not a guarantee that every LED light will stop flickering. Compared with 60 or 120 fps, 30 fps is also less demanding in low light, although it captures less-smooth motion.
iPhone settings to test
Turn Auto FPS off temporarily
Go to Settings > Camera > Record Video > Auto FPS and disable it for a comparison recording. Depending on the model, Auto FPS can apply to 30 fps, to both 30 and 60 fps, or be disabled. Supported iPhones may also show Auto Low Light FPS.

Auto FPS is designed to improve low-light video and may reduce recording to 24 fps. Disabling it is a diagnostic test, not a universal recommendation. Compare clips with it on and off, then keep the setting that produces the cleaner result.
Lock exposure and focus
In Camera, tap the subject and touch and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears. You can then adjust the exposure slider. Tap elsewhere to unlock. Apple documents these controls in its Camera tools guide.
AE/AF Lock can stop brightness “pumping” when the camera repeatedly reacts to a face, bright sign, window, or dark background. It does not synchronize the sensor with a flickering light, so it may not remove horizontal bands caused by the light source.
Test HDR Video only when the problem involves sharing or playback
Go to Settings > Camera > Record Video > HDR Video and turn it off for a comparison clip if the video looks wrong only after sharing, editing, uploading, or opening it in another app.
HDR is not the primary suspected cause of ordinary lighting flicker. It is mainly a compatibility test: supported iPhones record HDR, while other devices or apps may receive or process an SDR version differently. Apple explains the setting in its video-recording documentation.

Turn off Slow Motion and Action mode for diagnosis
Slow-motion recording uses model-dependent rates such as 120 or 240 fps. Higher frame rates and shorter exposures can make artificial-light flicker more visible. Start in standard Video mode with bright, steady lighting.

Turn it off for the first test, then re-enable it only if standard Video mode is clean and you need stabilization. Apple notes that Action mode works best in bright light and that supported models may offer Action Mode Lower Light. See Apple’s recording formats and modes guide.
If your model provides Lock White Balance, testing it can prevent color temperature from changing during a shot. It will not remove brightness bands caused by the fixture itself.
Fix the light source instead of the phone
Changing the environment is often the most reliable solution:
- Switch off the suspect light and test each light independently.
- Replace a cheap or visibly flickering LED bulb or panel.
- Avoid dimming lights while filming; some dimmers create severe low-frequency flicker.
- Do not point directly at a bright LED sign or display during diagnosis.
- Use daylight or lighting marketed for video, then test the actual fixture at your intended frame rate.
- For a stage or venue, change position or ask the lighting operator whether a flicker-free setting is available.
“Flicker-free” labeling is not a substitute for testing. Different drivers, dimmers, venues, and frame rates can produce different results.

Use manual shutter control when the Camera app is not enough
If you cannot change the light and 30 fps does not solve the problem, use a camera app with manual exposure controls. Apple’s Final Cut Camera provides manual shutter duration, ISO, exposure, focus, and white-balance controls. In the app, go to Camera Settings > Exposure > Auto > Shutter, then drag the shutter dial. Apple documents the controls in its Final Cut Camera guide.
For a US 60-Hz indoor test:
- Set recording to 30 fps.
- Try a shutter speed near 1/60 second.
- Record a short clip and inspect the saved file.
- If bands remain, adjust gradually around that value while testing.
- Lock focus and exposure.
- Add light rather than forcing a very short shutter that increases noise or makes the image too dark.
One value will not solve every LED driver or stage-lighting system. The best setting depends on the fixture, dimmer, sensor readout, and app. Other manual camera apps may offer similar controls, but verify their current iPhone and iOS compatibility before relying on them.
Should you use PAL or 25/50 fps in the US?
Usually, no. PAL is a regional television format associated with many 50-Hz regions in Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. Apple lists PAL formats as model-dependent options. A 25/50-fps workflow can make sense when filming under 50-Hz lighting, working in a PAL production, or confirming that a particular venue behaves better with those settings.
It is not a universal iPhone anti-flicker mode. Changing to PAL can affect editing, delivery, slow motion, and compatibility, so US users should begin with 30 fps unless their production requirements or lighting environment call for something else.
When only video playback flickers
If the original file is clean on another device, work through these checks:

- Close and reopen the playback app.
- Download the video instead of streaming it.
- Play it in Photos and in another reputable player.
- Test another known-good video in the same app.
- Update the affected app and iOS, then restart the iPhone.
- Temporarily check Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Dim Flashing Lights.
Apple’s Dim Flashing Lights feature can detect flashing or strobing content and dim it on the iPhone in real time. It changes the on-device presentation of supported media; it does not repair the underlying video file. If only one file flickers everywhere, that file may be damaged or incorrectly encoded. If every video flickers only on the iPhone, the display or its processing becomes more likely.
Camera hardware and software checks
Before seeking service, follow Apple’s basic camera troubleshooting steps:
- Remove the case, lens film, lens converter, magnetic mount, and other accessories.
- Clean the front and rear lenses with a microfiber cloth.
- Test the flashlight.
- Test the front and rear cameras separately.
- Restart the iPhone and install available iOS updates.

Contact Apple or an authorized service provider if flicker occurs in daylight and under multiple unrelated lights, affects both cameras and the saved files, or continues alongside black screens, persistent artifacts, severe color errors, focus failure, or flash failure. You can start through Apple’s repair page. Repair eligibility and cost depend on the iPhone model, damage, warranty, AppleCare coverage, and service location.

A short diagnostic decision tree
- Does the saved file flicker elsewhere? If no, troubleshoot playback or the display. If yes, continue.
- Does it happen under one light? If yes, replace, switch off, or move away from that light.
- Is it pulsing without bands? Try AE/AF Lock to isolate exposure pumping.
- Are there horizontal bands or color shifts? Test daylight, 30 fps, and then manual shutter control near 1/60 second.
- Are you using 60/120 fps, Slow Motion, or Action mode? Test standard Video mode first.
- Does it happen everywhere, including daylight? Remove accessories, clean lenses, restart, update iOS, test both cameras, and seek service if it persists.
