Still using iOS 18 in the U.S. and dealing with battery drain, crashes, weak connectivity, overheating, or CarPlay failures? Start with the least disruptive fixes: check your exact version, install the newest compatible update, restart the iPhone, check storage, and rule out an Apple service outage. iOS 18 is no longer Apple’s current major release as of August 2026—Apple’s current support material references iOS 26—but these steps remain useful for iPhones that have stayed on iOS 18.
Before resetting anything, identify whether the problem affects the whole iPhone or only one app, network, accessory, or vehicle. That distinction usually points to the right fix.

Try these fixes first
- Check the version at Settings > General > About.
- Back up the iPhone.
- Install the newest compatible release shown at Settings > General > Software Update. Connect to Wi‐Fi and power while updating. Apple’s compatibility and update guidance is available at Apple Support.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Update affected apps in the App Store.
- Disconnect accessories, VPNs, third-party keyboards, AirPods, and CarPlay, then test again.
- Check Apple’s System Status for outages.
Do not begin with Reset All Settings or a factory reset. Those actions create setup work and can remove saved preferences, networks, privacy settings, VPN configurations, and Apple Pay cards.
Battery draining quickly after iOS 18
Battery use can temporarily rise after a major update while iOS completes indexing, setup, and other background tasks. In Settings > Battery, look for insights such as Ongoing iOS Update or Ongoing Device Setup. Apple recommends waiting several days before judging post-update battery performance; the exact recovery time varies by iPhone, workload, signal strength, and the update.

- Review battery use by app and system activity in Settings > Battery.
- Use Wi‐Fi where possible, particularly in areas with weak cellular coverage.
- On supported 5G models, choose Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data > 5G Auto.
- Use Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode when you need longer runtime. It reduces some background activity and visual effects.
- Check battery condition. On iPhone 15 and later, use Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, use Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
If drain continues well beyond the post-update period, investigate the top battery users rather than dismissing it as normal. A Service recommendation points toward battery service, not another software tweak. Persistent heat and drain during light use can also indicate hardware trouble. See Apple’s battery guidance.
iPhone feels slow, freezes, or restarts
Do not assume iOS 18 universally slows older iPhones. Performance depends on the model, battery health, free storage, temperature, workload, and the specific software build.
- Restart the phone and install the latest compatible update.
- Review storage at Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Remove large downloads, unused apps, and videos, or offload apps you do not need.
- Update apps, then test with accessories and VPNs disconnected.
- If one app is responsible, update it and reinstall it only after confirming its data is synced or backed up.
- Test the phone while cool. Heat can reduce performance.
- Force-restart only when the iPhone is frozen; it is not a routine performance treatment.
Apple’s iOS 18 release notes document fixes for specific issues involving areas such as storage reporting, Settings, Control Center, Shortcuts, Siri, Messages, and CarPlay. Updating is therefore preferable to erasing the device as a first response.

Wi‐Fi says “No Internet Connection”
- Open Settings > Wi‐Fi, confirm Wi‐Fi is enabled, and check that the intended network has the blue checkmark.
- Make sure Airplane Mode is off and restart the iPhone.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Try another Wi‐Fi network.
- If only one network fails, forget it and rejoin it with the correct password.
- If every network fails, update iOS and test again.
If necessary, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This preserves personal content but removes saved Wi‐Fi passwords and resets cellular, VPN, and APN settings. School- or work-managed iPhones should be checked with the IT administrator first. Apple explains the process and consequences in its Wi‐Fi troubleshooting guide.
- If other devices also fail, suspect the router, ISP, or an outage.
- If only this iPhone fails on one network, suspect credentials, VPN settings, or router compatibility.
- If this iPhone fails everywhere, investigate iOS, configuration, or hardware.
“SOS,” “No Service,” or “Searching”
- Turn Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Open Settings > General > About and wait for a carrier-settings update prompt.
- Install the latest compatible iOS update.
- Check local coverage and your carrier’s outage information.
- Confirm that the cellular account is active and that the SIM or eSIM is properly provisioned.
The carrier controls account status, coverage, many eSIM problems, and network provisioning, so contact the carrier when those are involved. On supported iPhones using iOS 18 or later, the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics. See Apple’s cellular troubleshooting guidance.
Apps crash or refuse to open
- Update the app in the App Store.
- Restart the iPhone and check available storage.
- Check whether the developer lists an iOS 18 compatibility requirement.
- Delete and reinstall the app only after confirming cloud synchronization or another backup. Local, unsynced data may be lost, and you may need to sign in again.
- Contact the developer if only that app fails.
- Contact Apple if several unrelated apps, or built-in Apple apps, fail.
One failing third-party app usually points to its code, local data, account state, or compatibility. Several unrelated apps failing suggests storage pressure, heat, iOS, or hardware.
Notifications, Messages, keyboard, and Siri problems
- Check Settings > Notifications for the affected app.
- Check Focus modes and Scheduled Summary.
- Restart and update both iOS and the app.
- Test with Apple’s keyboard. Temporarily remove a third-party keyboard at Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- For Messages, identify whether the problem affects iMessage, RCS, SMS, or MMS, and verify Wi‐Fi or cellular service.
Notification behavior can also change when the iPhone is locked, an Apple Watch is connected, a Focus mode is active, or CarPlay is in use. Apple’s iOS 18 update history lists version-specific fixes for issues including Messages quitting in a particular Apple Watch-face situation and the keyboard disappearing when starting a typed Siri request. These examples do not explain every keyboard or Messages complaint; update first and isolate the conditions that trigger the problem.

Bluetooth, AirPods, and CarPlay
- Restart the iPhone and accessory.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled, then forget and re-pair the accessory.
- For CarPlay, remove the vehicle at Settings > General > CarPlay and set it up again.
- For wired CarPlay, try an Apple-certified cable and another USB port.
- Update the vehicle’s infotainment firmware.
- Test another accessory or vehicle if possible, and compare wired with wireless CarPlay.
CarPlay failures can originate in iOS, Bluetooth pairing, the cable, USB hardware, or the vehicle’s infotainment software. Apple’s iOS 18 update history and developer release notes document selected Bluetooth and CarPlay fixes, including vehicle-specific cases. A vehicle-firmware update may be required.
iPhone gets hot or charging pauses
Warmth can be expected during an update, restoration, setup, gaming, navigation, video recording, charging, weak-signal conditions, or use in a hot environment. Charging may pause when the iPhone becomes too warm.
- Stop demanding apps and move the phone out of direct sunlight.
- Remove a thick case temporarily.
- Disconnect the charger if the phone is excessively hot.
- Let it cool naturally—never put it in a refrigerator or freezer.
- Check whether setup, restoration, or an update is still running.
Apple warns that high temperatures can permanently shorten battery life and affect performance. If the iPhone overheats while idle or during light use, seek service. See Apple’s temperature guidance.
iOS 18 will not install
- Confirm that the iPhone is compatible. Apple lists iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, iPhone 11 through iPhone 16 families, and iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) for iOS 18, but features vary by model, region, language, and carrier.
- Back up the phone, free storage, connect to stable Wi‐Fi and power, restart, and retry.
- If iOS offers to temporarily remove apps to make room, understand that they can be reinstalled after the update; verify important app data before proceeding.
- Try updating with a Mac or Windows PC. Install current macOS, iTunes, or the Apple Devices app, use an Apple-certified cable, try another USB port, and avoid keyboard USB ports.
- If the computer does not recognize the phone, unlock it and try another cable or computer.
Repeated update errors can involve Apple-server connectivity, outdated computer software, security software, a defective cable or port, hardware, or unauthorized system modification. Apple’s update and restore error guide covers error numbers and recovery mode. Do not restore until you have confirmed a current backup.

When should you reset or erase the iPhone?
| Action | What it changes | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Restart | Personal data preserved | First response to temporary glitches |
| Reset Network Settings | Saved networks, passwords, VPN, and APN settings removed | Persistent connectivity configuration problems |
| Reset All Settings | Personal content preserved, but system preferences are reset | Persistent configuration problems after targeted fixes |
| Erase All Content and Settings | Local data and settings removed | Last resort after a verified backup |
| Recovery-mode restore | Software is reinstalled and data may be erased | Boot, update, or restore failures |
Back up before any reset, app deletion, recovery-mode operation, or erase. Reset All Settings can be useful, but it is not an opening fix because you will need to reconfigure preferences, saved networks, privacy choices, and other settings.
Who should help?
- Apple: system-wide failures, boot loops, repeated restarts, battery service warnings, persistent overheating, or suspected iPhone hardware damage.
- Your carrier: account status, coverage, SIM/eSIM activation, cellular provisioning, and carrier outages.
- The app developer: one third-party app that crashes or behaves incorrectly after updates.
- Your router or ISP: multiple devices cannot access the same Wi‐Fi network.
- The vehicle manufacturer: infotainment firmware or vehicle-specific CarPlay failures.
Use the Apple Support app for guided troubleshooting and diagnostics where supported, or consult Apple’s iPhone repair options when the evidence points to hardware.
