Fix an AI-generated flaky test the same way you fix any nondeterministic test: reproduce it repeatedly, capture the conditions that change, isolate whether the test, application, or infrastructure is at fault, then replace timing guesses and uncontrolled state with deterministic inputs and condition-based synchronization. Do not start by adding a longer timeout or a retry.
AI-written tests are still ordinary code, so they can leak state, depend on execution order, race asynchronous work, use random values, assert unstable formatting, or call real services at unreliable times. A repeatable diagnostic process turns an intermittent failure into a small reproducer that you can rewrite, quarantine temporarily, or delete when its behavior is already covered elsewhere.

Why do AI-generated tests become flaky?
A flaky test passes and fails without a relevant code change, apparently nondeterministically. The generated origin does not create a special category of failure; it often makes familiar problems easier to introduce because a model may guess at waits, fixtures, data, selectors, and cleanup without knowing the system’s timing or ownership rules.
pytest lists uncontrolled state, test-order dependence, parallel execution, strict assertions, and thread-safety problems among common causes. Browser and mobile tests add rendering, animation, network, device, and driver timing. A generated test can also encode a random value or wall-clock timestamp directly into an assertion, making the same test input produce different outcomes.

A 2024 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Software Engineering study by Martin Gruber, Muhammad Firhard Roslan, Owain Parry, Fabian Scharnböck, Phil McMinn, Gordon Fraser and colleagues sampled 6,356 projects. The researchers generated tests with EvoSuite and Pynguin and executed each test 200 times. They found flakiness in generated tests at least as often as in developer-written tests; randomness was a more frequent cause than networking or concurrency. Applying EvoSuite’s flakiness-suppression mechanisms reduced flaky tests by 71.7% in that study. Those figures describe the study’s projects and tools, not a guarantee for your suite.
How do I prove that a failure is intermittent?
Reproduce the failure before changing the code. Your first objective is a record showing which runs failed and what differed between them.
- Run the exact same test repeatedly. Keep the revision, command, test data, and environment fixed. Record pass/fail status and the first failing assertion for every run.
- Vary one execution variable at a time. Run with a different test order, one worker instead of many, then several workers; change the random seed; and compare a local run with the CI image or device. A failure that appears only after another test points toward leaked state or ordering.
- Use a repetition budget appropriate to the risk. Fuchsia testing guidance recommends repeated runs and injectable seeds; teams may use 100 to 1,000 local repetitions for tests known to be prone to flakes. Treat that as a diagnostic range, not a pass certificate.
- Keep the original generated artifact. Save the prompt, model or generator version, generated code revision, and any post-generation edits. A later regeneration can otherwise make the failure impossible to reproduce.
A deterministic test should produce the same result whenever it runs against the same code revision and inputs. Fuchsia states this expectation explicitly. If your repetitions do not expose the failure, increase observability and vary order, seed, parallelism, and environment before declaring the test reliable.
What evidence should I capture from a flaky run?
Capture enough context to compare a passing run with a failing one. A single stack trace rarely identifies a race.
| Evidence | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Execution identity | Commit, generated-code revision, test command, worker count, test order, retry number, and random seed | Shows whether the same test and inputs actually ran |
| Timing | Start and finish timestamps, durations of setup and key actions, explicit wait conditions, and timeout values | Reveals races, slow dependencies, and hidden time assumptions |
| Environment | Operating-system image, runtime and dependency versions, browser and driver versions, device model, locale, and time zone | Separates product defects from environment-specific behavior |
| Failure artifacts | Full logs, stack trace, screenshots or video for UI tests, network traces where permitted, and application logs | Shows the state at the moment of failure rather than after cleanup |
| Data and state | Fixture identifiers, database state, feature flags, service responses, and cleanup results | Detects contamination from earlier tests or changing external data |
pytest specifically recommends preserving UI screenshots or video. Store artifacts for both a failing run and a known-good run when possible; the differences often expose an overlay, stale record, missing event, or wrong worker.
How do I tell whether the test, application, or infrastructure is at fault?
Reduce the problem until one layer can explain the nondeterminism. Do not label every intermittent result a product bug.

Test-owned nondeterminism
The test is suspect when it uses a fixed sleep, reads the wall clock, generates random data internally, relies on another test’s records, leaves mutable globals behind, assumes a particular order, or asserts incidental text, pixel layout, or collection ordering. Running the same application behavior through a smaller deterministic test can confirm this class.
Application-owned nondeterminism
The application may race its own asynchronous work, expose a real concurrency defect, return unstable ordering without a documented contract, or eventually reconcile data after the UI reports success. Reproduce the behavior with a deterministic test or a direct API call, then inspect application logs and state transitions rather than weakening the assertion.
Infrastructure-owned nondeterminism
CI resource starvation, a saturated database, unstable network dependency, clock skew, container startup, device farm behavior, or a changing browser image can create failures outside both test and product code. Compare resource metrics and dependency versions, and run the smallest reproducer on the same image before editing assertions.
Layer the test to expose the fault
Split a broad end-to-end test into unit, component, integration, and end-to-end checks. If a lower-level test is stable and the high-level test is not, the boundary between layers becomes the investigation target. pytest recommends rewriting at a lower level when doing so removes uncontrolled timing or state.
How do I replace sleeps in an AI-written Selenium test?
Replace a fixed delay with an explicit wait for the condition required by the next action. Selenium’s documentation summarizes the rule as “Sleeping is not waiting.” A sleep waits a predetermined duration whether the page is ready or not; a condition-based wait proceeds as soon as the condition is true and fails with a useful timeout when it is not.
Choose the condition, not a larger number
- Wait for an element to be present when the DOM node must exist.
- Wait for visibility when the user must see the element.
- Wait for clickability when overlays or disabled controls can intercept the click.
- Wait for specific text or an attribute when that state is the contract.
- Wait for a spinner to disappear or a network-driven status to become complete before reading results.
Use one synchronization strategy consistently. Mixing implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable delays, so configure the driver deliberately and keep timeout values close to the condition they protect.

wait.until(element_to_be_clickable((By.ID, 'save'))).click()
wait.until(text_to_be_present_in_element((By.ID, 'status'), 'Complete'))
The exact API differs by language binding, but the design is the same: identify an observable state transition and wait for it. If the generated test clicks immediately after starting an asynchronous operation, wait for the operation’s completion signal rather than for an arbitrary number of seconds.
Do not let an AI “fix” a race by extending the sleep
Selenium warns that an agent may respond to intermittent failures by increasing a timeout. That can make a slow run pass while preserving the race, increasing suite time, and hiding a regression. A timeout should bound a condition that is expected to become true; it should not substitute for knowing what completion means.

How should Android tests synchronize with asynchronous work?
Android guidance likewise warns that arbitrary sleeps make tests slow or flaky because devices and environments need different execution times. Use framework-aware synchronization: Espresso idling resources for work outside Espresso’s automatic tracking, or Compose wait-until APIs for UI state rendered by Jetpack Compose.
Expose an idling signal for your own asynchronous worker, then let the test wait for idle before asserting. For Compose, wait for a semantic or state condition that represents the user-visible contract. If a third-party service cannot expose an idling signal, isolate it behind a fake in unit or component tests and reserve a smaller integration test for the real service.
How do I make clocks and random values deterministic?
Inject time and randomness instead of creating them inside the test. A fake clock lets you advance time deliberately; a supplied seed lets you replay a generated case.
- Define a clock or time-provider interface used by production code.
- Use the real clock in the application and a controllable fake clock in tests.
- Advance the fake clock to trigger expiration, scheduling, or debounce behavior; do not wait in real time.
- Pass a seed into any generator and print that seed on failure so the exact data can be replayed.
- Avoid assertions on the current wall-clock value. Assert the relationship or outcome, such as an expiry boundary, using the injected clock.
Fuchsia recommends fake or mock clocks and seed injection for this reason. Randomized testing remains useful when the seed is recorded; unrecorded randomness turns a failure into a one-off anecdote.

How do I isolate state, fixtures, and external services?
Every test should establish the state it needs and remove or discard it afterward. Independent fixtures allow any order and safe parallel execution.
Use fresh data and explicit cleanup
- Create records with unique, test-owned identifiers or use a transaction that rolls back.
- Reset feature flags, caches, files, queues, and environment variables in teardown, including after a failed assertion.
- Do not depend on a record created by an earlier test or on a global singleton that another worker can mutate.
- Make cleanup idempotent so a partially completed setup can be safely removed.
Separate fake and real dependencies
For a unit or component test, mock an external service and assert how your code handles its contract. Test the real service in a dedicated integration or contract suite with controlled data and explicit availability expectations. A live network call in every generated unit test combines external latency, changing data, authentication expiry, and service outages into one opaque failure.
Make parallelism an intentional property
Run the minimized test alone, then in the same worker configuration used by CI. If it fails only in parallel, look for shared files, ports, databases, environment variables, global caches, and thread-unsafe clients. Give each worker isolated resources rather than serializing the entire suite as a first response.
How can I fix brittle assertions without hiding real defects?
Assert the product contract, not an incidental representation. First confirm the intended behavior with the product or API specification; only then change the assertion.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- For floating-point results, compare within a documented tolerance appropriate to the calculation rather than requiring identical binary values.
- For collections whose order is not part of the contract, compare as sets or sort by a defined key. Keep order-sensitive assertions where order is user-visible or specified.
- For timestamps, assert an allowed interval or relationship to the injected clock instead of matching a wall-clock string.
- For UI text, assert stable semantic content and roles rather than whitespace, generated IDs, or transient animation frames.
- For eventual consistency, assert the documented terminal state after waiting for its completion signal; do not accept any intermediate state merely to gain stability.
pytest calls out overly strict floating-point and timing assertions as common flake sources. Weakening an assertion until any result passes is not a fix: it converts a test into a false positive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I retry, quarantine, rewrite, or delete a flaky test?
Use retries and quarantine only as temporary containment while an owner investigates. The permanent choice depends on whether the test expresses a unique contract and whether its failure can be made deterministic.
Best Value
| Action | Appropriate use | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Retry | Keep a large CI job moving while collecting a second result and preserving the first failure | Can conceal a real regression and inflate feedback time |
| Quarantine or expected-failure marker | Prevent a known flake from blocking unrelated changes while assigning an owner and review date | Permanent quarantine removes pressure to repair it |
| Rewrite | Retain unique coverage but replace sleeps, shared state, random inputs, or a high-level implementation that hides the cause | Requires understanding the intended contract, not just changing syntax |
| Delete | The behavior is already covered elsewhere or the generated test has no defensible contract | Coverage may be lost if no equivalent test exists |
Android recommends retry mechanisms for large tests but says flaky tests still need to be fixed. pytest documents rerun plugins and expected-failure quarantine as mitigations and warns against permanent quarantine. Microsoft testing guidance recommends fixing or removing unreliable tests, using deterministic data, and monitoring suite health.
How do I compare two possible fixes?
Choose the fix that improves the test’s behavior, not merely its pass rate. Score each candidate against the following questions.
| Decision axis | Question to ask | Strong fix |
|---|---|---|
| Determinism | Will the same inputs produce the same result? | Controls seeds, clocks, data, and environment-dependent inputs |
| Isolation | Can the test run in any order and in parallel? | Uses independent fixtures and worker-safe resources |
| Synchronization | Does it wait on a state transition? | Uses an observable condition instead of elapsed time |
| Diagnostic value | Will the next failure explain what changed? | Records seeds, traces, screenshots, versions, and state |
| Runtime cost | Does it finish promptly on both fast and slow environments? | Stops as soon as the condition is met and avoids real-time sleeps |
| Contract fidelity | Does it verify intended behavior? | Preserves meaningful assertions while ignoring incidental representation |
What is a practical repair workflow for a generated test?
Apply the following sequence to one failing test, then encode the successful pattern in your generator prompt or review checklist.
- Freeze the case. Save the generated code, prompt, commit, command, environment image, and data identifiers.
- Reproduce and count. Run repeatedly and record order, workers, seed, timing, and artifacts for each result.
- Minimize. Remove unrelated setup, assertions, and calls until the smallest test still fails intermittently.
- Classify. Decide whether the remaining variation comes from state, order, parallelism, clock, randomness, asynchronous work, network, thread safety, or an application defect.
- Replace time guesses. Convert sleeps and polling loops into waits for explicit UI, API, queue, or idling conditions.
- Inject variable inputs. Supply a fake clock, recorded seed, deterministic fixtures, and controlled service responses.
- Isolate resources. Give the test its own records, files, ports, namespace, and cleanup path.
- Repair assertions. Match the documented contract with tolerances or order-insensitive comparisons only where the contract permits.
- Stress the repaired version. Repeat it with changed order, workers, seeds, and the CI environment, retaining artifacts for any failure.
- Choose lifecycle treatment. Merge the deterministic test, quarantine it with an owner and deadline, rewrite it at a lower level, or delete it when redundant.
How can a team keep AI-generated tests from regressing?
Put safeguards around generation and execution rather than trusting a one-time review.
- Require generated tests to declare their fixtures, external dependencies, synchronization condition, random seed policy, and cleanup behavior.
- Reject new fixed sleeps unless the sleep itself is the behavior under test and its duration is justified.
- Run a focused repetition job for tests with prior flakes and publish pass/fail counts, seeds, and artifacts.
- Track flaky-test rate, quarantine age, retry count, and mean time to repair as suite-health metrics.
- Pin or deliberately update browser, driver, runtime, device, and dependency versions; record the versions in failure reports.
- Review generated assertions for contract fidelity before accepting them. A syntactically valid test can still verify the wrong thing.
These controls make a model’s output reviewable. They also ensure that a retry or quarantine remains an explicitly managed exception rather than an invisible part of normal execution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can changing the browser or driver version create a flaky test?
Yes. A browser, driver, device image, locale, or dependency update can alter rendering, event timing, or selector behavior. Pin versions for diagnosis, record them with every failure, and then test upgrades in a separate compatibility job instead of changing versions while chasing the original flake.
Should I regenerate the test with a different AI prompt?
Regeneration can remove one symptom but may introduce another, so preserve the failing case first. Give the generator the explicit contract, fixture boundaries, synchronization condition, seed policy, and prohibited patterns such as fixed sleeps; then review and stress the new code like any other change.
What if the test fails only on one CI worker?
Compare that worker’s image, resource pressure, clock, browser/device, network route, and leftover workspace with a passing worker. Re-run the minimized test on the same worker while collecting artifacts; if the environment is unique, repair or retire the worker rather than weakening the test for every environment.
How do I know when a flaky test is safe to remove?
Map its assertions to existing unit, integration, contract, or end-to-end coverage and confirm that no unique risk signal would disappear. Remove it only after that mapping is documented; otherwise rewrite the test at the lowest layer that can verify the intended behavior deterministically.
