Error 0xC0020043 is the Windows status RPC_NT_INTERNAL_ERROR, whose message is “An internal error occurred in the RPC.” It is an error category, not a diagnosis of one damaged file or one failed component. The correct fix depends on where it appears: an application crash, Windows setup or update, activation, a debugger session, or another RPC-dependent task.
Start by recording the full message, the program or process involved, what you were doing, and your Windows build. Then follow the troubleshooting path for that trigger. Do not download or replace RPCRT4.dll, run registry cleaners, or reset Windows solely because this code is visible.

What does error 0xC0020043 mean?
0xC0020043 maps to RPC_NT_INTERNAL_ERROR. Microsoft’s error reference describes it as “An internal error occurred in the RPC.” RPC, or Remote Procedure Call, is a communication mechanism that lets Windows processes and services request work from one another, including when the work is handled by another process on the same computer.
The label tells you that an RPC operation encountered an internal failure. It does not identify the application, service, driver, DLL, or configuration that started the operation. The same status can therefore appear in unrelated situations. A setup failure, an activation attempt, and an application crash may all display the same hexadecimal value while requiring different investigations.

Treat the code as a clue to the failing operation, not as a complete repair instruction. A first-chance exception shown in a debugger is also different from a crash that closes an application. The visible number alone does not prove that Windows itself is damaged.
Why is there no single fix for this code?
RPC is used by many components, so the surrounding symptom matters more than the number. A useful diagnosis answers four questions:

- Which application, installer, service, or Windows tool reported the code?
- What exact action triggered it?
- Did the operation fail, or did an application actually close?
- Is the code recorded in an event log, shown by a debugger, or displayed in a dialog?
For example, a Microsoft PowerToys Command Palette crash report recorded exception code 0xc0020043 and RPCRT4.dll as the faulting module. That is evidence about that particular crash report, not proof that Command Palette or RPCRT4.dll causes every occurrence of the code.
How do I identify what triggered 0xC0020043?
Collecting context prevents you from applying a disruptive repair to the wrong problem. Do this before changing system files or uninstalling updates.
- Write down the complete message. Copy the hexadecimal code, any text beside it, and the title of the dialog or tool that displayed it. A code in a setup window is materially different from one in an application crash event.
- Record the process. Note the application name and version, installer name, or Windows feature involved. If the program closed, record the steps that reproduce the crash.
- Check your Windows edition and build. Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and record the version and build shown. Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases can have different fixes from an application publisher. - Capture event details when available. In Event Viewer, open the event associated with the failure and save the event’s General and Details information. For an application crash, note the faulting application, faulting module, exception code, and timestamp.
- Distinguish a debugger exception from a crash. If a development tool reports a first-chance exception but the program continues, the event may be handled by the application. Escalate it to the application’s developers rather than assuming Windows must be repaired.
Keep this record for support. It lets an application maintainer or Microsoft Support match the failure to a specific build and reproduction path.

How do I fix 0xC0020043 during Windows setup or an upgrade?
Microsoft’s general installation guidance is the appropriate starting point when the code appears while installing or upgrading Windows. The guidance is not a code-specific fix: Microsoft’s setup error table does not list 0xC0020043 as a named installation error.

- Check Windows Update status. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update; in Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Install available updates, restart, and retry the operation only if the update is still offered.
- Check Device Manager. Right-click Start, choose Device Manager, and look for warning icons. Open each affected device, read its status, and use the hardware maker’s official support channel for a compatible driver. Do not install a generic driver merely because it has a similar name.
- Consider third-party security software. Security products can interfere with an installer. Use the product’s documented temporary-disable or uninstall procedure only if the vendor and Microsoft instructions allow it, and restore protection immediately after testing. Do not leave the computer unprotected as a troubleshooting strategy.
- Retry with a clean installation environment. Close applications, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, and ensure the device has stable power and sufficient free storage. If the same step fails, record the new message and the setup phase rather than repeatedly restarting the process.
- Use Microsoft’s built-in system-file repair guidance only when setup symptoms point to system corruption. Repair commands can be appropriate in that circumstance, but they are not guaranteed fixes for this hexadecimal code and should not be treated as one.
If setup still fails, preserve the setup logs and the exact build information and seek Microsoft Support. The code by itself cannot tell support which component blocked the upgrade.
How do I fix 0xC0020043 during Windows activation?
Activation has its own troubleshooting path. The activation guidance does not specify a dedicated repair for 0xC0020043, so use the installed edition and the activation state to choose the next step.
- Open Settings > System > Activation in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Confirm that the installed edition, such as Home or Pro, matches the license you intend to use. An edition mismatch can prevent activation even when the device previously ran Windows.
- Run the Activation troubleshooter shown on the Activation page. Follow its prompts and allow it to check the device’s activation state.
- Record the code displayed before troubleshooting and the code, if any, that remains afterward. Microsoft notes that the displayed error may change after the troubleshooter runs; the remaining code is the one to investigate next.
- If activation still fails, use the account, product-key, or digital-license support route that matches your purchase and contact Microsoft with the edition, build, and current activation message.
Do not infer that an activation failure means an RPC DLL must be replaced. Activation status and licensing information are separate from the question of which process raised the RPC exception.
What should I do if an application crashes with 0xC0020043?
When an application closes, freezes, or records an application-crash event, troubleshoot that program first. The faulting application and its reproduction steps are more useful than a generic Windows repair.

- Reproduce the failure carefully. Note the document, command, account, or menu action that triggers it. Check whether the crash occurs every time or only with one file or project.
- Update the application through its publisher’s official channel. Verify that the release supports your Windows version and install the latest maintenance update available for that product.
- Use the application’s repair or reset option. Windows apps may expose Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [app] > Advanced options > Repair or Reset; desktop software may provide a repair choice in its installer. Repair is less disruptive because it attempts to preserve data, while reset can remove app settings.
- Check the publisher’s issue tracker or support notes. Search using the application version, Windows build, full exception code, and faulting module. A known compatibility issue may require a specific application update or rollback.
- Test with a new application profile or a clean document. If the crash is limited to one profile or file, the application’s data may be the trigger. Back up the original before attempting any conversion or repair.
- Send a complete crash report. Include the event details, timestamp, application version, Windows build, reproduction steps, and whether the program was being debugged. Avoid uploading private documents or credentials with the report.
A report naming RPCRT4.dll as the faulting module does not establish that the DLL is defective. System modules can be where an exception becomes visible even when the initiating bug is in the calling application.
Is 0xC0020043 a problem with RPCRT4.dll?
Not necessarily. RPCRT4.dll is a Windows RPC runtime module, and it may appear as the faulting module in a particular crash report. That observation does not establish a universal cause, and the code alone does not justify downloading a replacement copy.
Do not rename, delete, replace, or download RPCRT4.dll from a third-party DLL site. An incorrect version can create additional startup and compatibility failures. If Windows system-file corruption is independently indicated by broader symptoms, follow Microsoft’s built-in repair guidance and keep the original event details for support.
What if Windows itself is unstable?
If multiple unrelated programs fail, Windows features stop responding, or the machine has repeated system-level errors, use the least disruptive built-in recovery option that matches the symptom. Back up important files before any action that can remove data or applications.

Should I run SFC, DISM, a clean boot, or uninstall updates?
These actions can be reasonable in the right surrounding scenario, but none is a guaranteed repair for 0xC0020043. The code has no universal command sequence.
- System-file repair commands: Consider them when Windows shows broader evidence of corrupted or missing system files, not merely because an application crash names an RPC status.
- A clean boot: Consider it when a background service or startup program appears to interfere with setup or a specific application. Record which services you change and restore normal startup after testing.
- Uninstalling an update: Consider it only when the failure started immediately after that update and the recovery page offers a matching rollback. Keep in mind that removing security updates reduces protection until a supported replacement is installed.
- Driver changes: Use the device manufacturer’s official package when Device Manager or the triggering task points to a device problem. Do not change unrelated drivers simply to make the code disappear.
Document the result of each change. If the error changes, disappears, or moves to another operation, record that outcome instead of stacking several unverified repairs at once.
How can I escalate a persistent error?
Escalate with evidence rather than only the hexadecimal code. For an application, contact its publisher with the version, Windows build, crash event, faulting module, and exact reproduction steps. For setup, activation, or system-wide failures, contact Microsoft Support with the edition, build, timeline, logs requested by the support channel, and a list of hardware or software changes made before the failure.

Tell support whether the code appeared in a dialog, Event Viewer, or debugger and whether the application actually terminated. Mention every attempted recovery action and its result. This prevents support from repeating steps and helps distinguish a handled debugger exception from a confirmed crash.
