Microsoft documents the exact code as JET_errInstanceUnavailable in Azure File Sync cloud tiering, where the tiering database is not running. How do I fix 0x8E5E0442 in Azure File Sync?
If the message came from Azure File Sync cloud tiering, follow Microsoft’s service-focused sequence. The exact code has its strongest documentation in this context.
1. Confirm the affected server and volume
Write down the server name, the volume or share involved, the full error text, and when the failure occurred. Check whether cloud tiering is the task reporting the error. If the server is part of a production file service, follow your organization’s backup, change-control, and outage procedures before restarting anything.
2. Restart FileSyncSvc
- Sign in with an account permitted to administer the Azure File Sync server.
- Open the Windows Services console by pressing Win+R, entering
services.msc, and pressing Enter. - Locate the Azure File Sync service named
FileSyncSvc. - Choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, choose Stop, wait for the service to stop, and then choose Start.
- Retry the cloud-tiering operation and note whether the same code returns.
Microsoft also lists restarting the server as an option. A service restart is usually narrower in scope; a server restart affects every workload on that machine, so use the latter only during an approved maintenance window.
3. Check the volume if the error persists
Microsoft’s cloud-tiering troubleshooting table says to run chkdsk on the volume when the error remains after the service or server restart. Identify the correct drive letter first. 4. Check storage hardware and recent events
Review the server’s storage-management tools, controller or enclosure alerts, and recent system events for signs of a disk, controller, cable, or enclosure problem. - Return to
services.msc. - Right-click Windows Update and choose Start.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Windows Update page for your version and select Check for updates.
