Error 0x8010006E is Microsoft’s smart-card status SCARD_W_CANCELLED_BY_USER, meaning “The action was canceled by the user.” It does not, by itself, prove that your smart-card reader, card, or TPM is defective. Retry the operation, identify which application and prompt produced the code, and let the card workflow finish before changing hardware or security-processor settings. If the message appears during a work or school sign-in, certificate, or access task, give your IT team the exact code and the action that was being attempted.
What does Windows error 0x8010006E mean?
Microsoft maps 0x8010006E to SCARD_W_CANCELLED_BY_USER. The plain-language definition is “The action was canceled by the user.” This is a smart-card status, so Windows or an application was reporting that a smart-card operation ended as canceled rather than completed. Microsoft lists this mapping in [MS-ERREF]: Windows Error Codes, release v20241119 (November 19, 2024).
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The code does not identify the application, the particular card operation, or the person or component that initiated the cancellation. A person may have dismissed a prompt, an application may have returned the cancellation status, or the workflow may have stopped while the user was interacting with it. The hexadecimal value alone cannot distinguish those situations.
“Canceled by the user” should therefore be read as a status description, not as an accusation or a complete diagnosis. It tells you how the operation ended, but not why the prompt was closed, whether the cancellation was deliberate, or whether another component stopped waiting for a response.

Is 0x8010006E a TPM error?
No. The Microsoft mapping identifies this value as a smart-card cancellation status, not as a TPM initialization or TPM-clearing error. TPM troubleshooting is a separate procedure and should not be the first response to this code by itself.
A TPM can be involved in some sign-in and credential designs, including protected keys or virtual smart-card data, but that possibility does not change the meaning of this status. Treat a separate TPM warning in Windows Security as a different problem and investigate it on its own.
This distinction matters because TPM actions are security-sensitive. A smart-card prompt can be canceled without the TPM being damaged or misconfigured. Conversely, a computer can have a genuine TPM warning while also producing an unrelated smart-card cancellation. Do not combine the two diagnoses simply because both may appear during authentication.
What should I do first when the code appears?
Use the following sequence to establish what was canceled before attempting repairs. These checks are deliberately conservative because Microsoft provides a code definition, not an application-specific fix.
- Retry the same action once. Start the sign-in, certificate selection, authentication, or other smart-card task again. Watch every prompt and note whether a person clicks Cancel, closes a dialog, or allows the operation to time out.
- Record the context. Write down the application name, the exact action, the account or certificate involved, and whether a physical or virtual smart card was part of the process. Also note whether the message appeared immediately or after a prompt was displayed.
- Allow the card operation to finish. Keep the relevant prompt open and follow the requested card interaction through to its normal completion. Do not dismiss a certificate or PIN dialog simply to move on, and do not start several card operations at the same time.
- Repeat only after checking the workflow. If the second attempt succeeds, the first event was consistent with a canceled interaction. If it fails again, preserve the exact wording, application, and sequence rather than guessing at a hardware cause.
- Check for independent symptoms. Look for a separate message that explicitly identifies an unresponsive or removed card, an incorrect PIN, a blocked PIN, or a device problem. Microsoft distinguishes those conditions from
SCARD_W_CANCELLED_BY_USER; this code alone does not establish any of them.
Do not perform repeated blind retries while changing several variables at once. If you unplug a reader, change a certificate, alter a PIN, and restart an application together, you lose the sequence that could show what actually triggered the cancellation. One controlled retry followed by careful notes is more useful than a series of undocumented changes.
How do I identify the application or task that canceled the operation?
The status reference does not name a particular Windows component or application. Identification therefore depends on what was open when the error appeared.
For sign-in or certificate prompts
Note the sign-in screen, browser, VPN client, remote-access tool, or business application that displayed the prompt. Record whether the task requested a certificate, card insertion, PIN entry, or a confirmation click. Those details let support staff match the status to the correct credential workflow.
For a card-management utility
Capture the utility’s name and the operation being performed, such as selecting a certificate or changing a card setting. Do not assume that every smart-card utility uses the same prompts or handles cancellation identically.

When the source is unclear
Write down the time, the window that was active, and what you had just clicked. If the code appears only once and the operation succeeds after a retry, continue to monitor it. If it returns, provide that timeline to the application vendor or your organization’s support team; the numeric code does not reveal an application-specific setting to change.
Separate a canceled prompt from a missing prompt
If no prompt was visible, do not assume that the reader or card failed. The application may have returned the status after a dialog was closed by another window, after a session ended, or after an internal request was canceled. Report that no prompt was visible, along with the preceding click and the time, instead of rewriting the event as a hardware failure.

The status applies to a smart-card operation; it does not, by itself, tell you whether the credential was on a removable physical card or implemented as a virtual smart card. Note which type was intended. This distinction is important to support staff, but it does not change the first response: retry, observe the workflow, and avoid clearing the TPM unless an independent TPM issue has been confirmed.
Should I replace the smart card or reader?
Not on the basis of 0x8010006E alone. Microsoft’s reference separates this cancellation status from neighboring statuses for a removed or unresponsive card, a wrong PIN, and a blocked PIN. Replacing a reader or card before finding evidence of one of those independent conditions can leave the original cause untouched.
Consider hardware investigation only when the same card operation shows additional, repeatable device symptoms, such as a separate status reporting that the card is unavailable or unresponsive. At that point, document the card technology, reader connection, and the exact error messages and follow the organization’s approved hardware-support process. The cancellation code itself is not a hardware diagnosis.
A useful test is to compare the exact same workflow under the same account and application after a deliberate retry. If it completes normally, the cancellation event is not evidence that a replacement part is needed. If it fails with a different, device-specific status, give support both codes and the order in which they appeared. The distinction between “canceled” and “removed” or “unresponsive” is diagnostically important.

What if the error occurs during work or school access?
Use the organization’s IT support path rather than changing security settings yourself. Smart-card certificates and sign-in credentials are often tied to managed policies, enrollment, and recovery procedures that an individual user cannot safely recreate.
Include the hexadecimal code, the symbolic name if shown, the application, the action being attempted, the time, and whether a prompt was canceled or closed. Tell support whether a retry worked and whether any separate card, PIN, or TPM message appeared. This information is more useful than reporting only that “the smart card failed.”

When should TPM troubleshooting be considered?
Investigate the TPM only when you have an independent TPM symptom, such as a TPM-specific status in Windows Security or a separate message about initialization, readiness, or the security processor. Microsoft’s TPM guidance treats those operations separately from smart-card cancellation.
Why clearing the TPM is not a fix for this code
Clearing a TPM removes keys created in the TPM and can affect data protected by those keys. Microsoft specifically warns that protected sign-in data and virtual smart-card information may become unavailable. Because of that risk, clearing the TPM is not a reasonable first response to 0x8010006E.
If a separate TPM problem has been confirmed
- Back up data and make sure you have the required recovery methods before changing the TPM.
- On a managed work or school computer, obtain administrator or IT direction first.
- Use Microsoft’s TPM troubleshooting instructions for the separate TPM message, not the smart-card cancellation code.
- Remember that TPM controls are exposed through UEFI and vary by computer manufacturer. If you are unsure which setting applies, use the manufacturer’s support information instead of changing firmware options at random.
Microsoft’s Device Security guidance likewise cautions users to back up data before clearing the security processor. The warning is practical: keys created in the TPM may be required to unlock protected data later. A clear operation can therefore create a new access problem even if the original smart-card cancellation was harmless.
Does the procedure differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10?
The meaning of 0x8010006E comes from Microsoft’s Windows error-code reference and is not changed by the edition label shown in Settings. The application, card middleware, and organizational policy determine the practical workflow, so the prompts you see can differ between installations.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. In October 2026, availability of updates and assistance can therefore depend on your edition, servicing arrangement, or organization. That lifecycle fact does not turn this status into a TPM error, and upgrading Windows will not identify which application canceled a smart-card action.

It also explains why there is no universal “0x8010006E repair tool.” The official entry defines the status but supplies no application-specific setting, occurrence statistic, or measured success rate. Any proposed fix must therefore be tied to the workflow in which the status appeared.

What should I avoid doing?
- Do not clear the TPM merely because the error contains a security-related workflow.
- Do not replace the card or reader without separate evidence of a device fault.
- Do not infer a wrong or blocked PIN from this status; Microsoft lists those as different conditions.
- Do not assume the code identifies the person who canceled the action or the application that caused it.
- Do not change UEFI TPM settings on a managed computer without the responsible administrator’s instructions.
- Do not publish or transmit PINs, recovery keys, or private certificate material while troubleshooting.
- Do not rely on a generic Windows cleaner or reinstall as a substitute for identifying the canceled card workflow.

What are the most common follow-up questions?
Can 0x8010006E mean that I entered the wrong PIN?
Not according to Microsoft’s status definitions. A wrong PIN and a blocked PIN have distinct smart-card statuses, so look for those specific messages before treating PIN entry as the cause.
Is there a published success rate for fixing this error?
No occurrence rate or measured repair-success rate is provided for this exact code in Microsoft’s error reference. The reference defines the status but does not report how often it appears or how frequently a particular workaround succeeds.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will reinstalling Windows remove the error?
The code does not identify an operating-system corruption problem, so reinstalling Windows is not a justified first step. Identify the application and canceled action first; a reinstall would not explain why that workflow returned a cancellation status.
What if the message appears only once?
If the same operation completes after a careful retry and no separate card, PIN, or TPM warning appears, keep the recorded details in case it recurs. A single cancellation does not establish a failing reader, card, or TPM.
Should I update or reinstall the card reader driver?
Not solely because this status appeared. The Microsoft mapping describes cancellation and does not identify a driver fault. Consider driver investigation only when separate, repeatable device symptoms or a support instruction points in that direction.
Best Value
Does this code prove that someone pressed Cancel?
No. The wording describes the returned status; it does not prove which person or software component initiated the cancellation. Note what happened on screen and let the application or organization’s support process determine the cause.
Can I clear the TPM to make a virtual smart card work again?
Do not do that based on this code. Microsoft warns that clearing the TPM can remove keys and affect protected sign-in or virtual smart-card data. Confirm a separate TPM problem, back up data, and obtain administrator guidance before any clear operation.
Bottom line
0x8010006E means that a smart-card action was canceled. Retry once, identify the application and prompt, and document the workflow. Replace hardware only when independent evidence points to a reader or card fault, and reserve TPM troubleshooting for a separate TPM-specific warning. Clearing the TPM without backups and recovery methods can make protected credentials or data inaccessible.
