Error 0x800F0827 usually means Windows stopped a servicing transaction because the servicing stack was updated and the computer must shut down before the operation can continue. Restart Windows completely, then retry the original update or command. If the error appeared while running DISM, use an elevated Command Prompt to run DISM first and SFC second. If those repairs fail, provide DISM with a matching Windows installation source, inspect the CBS and DISM logs, and use an in-place repair upgrade as the last preservation-focused step.
What does error 0x800F0827 mean?
Windows associates 0x800F0827 with CBS_E_STACK_SHUTDOWN_REQUIRED. Component-Based Servicing (CBS) handles Windows components, updates and system-image transactions. The code indicates that the servicing stack changed and must complete a shutdown or restart before another transaction can proceed.

The code is not, by itself, proof of malware, a failing hard drive or permanently corrupted Windows. A Microsoft Q&A incident showed the code during DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, and the reported resolution was a restart followed by another attempt. The package named in your CBS log determines the exact cause on your computer.
What should I do first?
1. Restart Windows completely
- Save your work and close applications.
- Open Start > Power > Restart. Do not choose Shut down and then assume the next boot is equivalent; use Restart so pending servicing work is handled in the normal sequence.
- Wait until Windows has returned to the desktop and disk activity has settled.
- Retry Windows Update or the command that produced 0x800F0827.
If the code appeared during Windows Update, run the same update again after the restart. A full restart is the lowest-risk response to a servicing-stack shutdown requirement.

How do I repair Windows with DISM?
Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt. DISM repairs the Windows component store and can obtain replacement files through Windows Update.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run RestoreHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthKeep the window open until DISM reports completion. The command targets the currently running Windows installation; /Online does not mean it repairs a remote computer. Depending on the component store and available repair files, the progress percentage can pause for a long time. Do not close the console merely because the percentage appears unchanged.

Why must I run SFC after DISM?
Run System File Checker only after DISM finishes. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as its source, so Microsoft documents this order.
sfc /scannowLeave the elevated window open until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC then reports whether it found and repaired protected system files, found corruption it could not repair, or found no integrity violations. If SFC says it could not perform the requested operation, note the message and proceed to the log review rather than running it indefinitely.
How do I retry Windows Update and rule out a software conflict?
Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
- Windows 11: open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run.
- Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
Apply any correction it offers, restart if requested, and retry the update or servicing operation.

Use a clean restart when normal startup software interferes
If DISM, SFC and Windows Update all fail after the first restart, a clean restart can reduce interference from third-party services and startup programs. Use Microsoft’s clean-start procedure for your Windows version, reproduce the update or repair attempt, and then return to normal startup afterward. A clean restart is a diagnostic step; it does not repair the component store by itself.
What if DISM cannot find the repair files?
Supply a repair source from a running Windows installation, a network share or removable installation media. The source must match the installed Windows release and architecture; a mismatched Windows 10/11 release or x64/ARM64 source can cause another repair failure.
Use a matching source
- Obtain installation media or a known-good Windows installation that matches the affected computer’s release and architecture.
- Connect or mount the media and identify its Windows image or component-store path.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthwith the appropriate/Sourcevalue for that image. The source syntax and image index depend on the media’s contents, so select the index that corresponds to the installed edition. - Add
/LimitAccesswhen you want DISM to use only the specified source and not fall back to Windows Update.
For example, installation media may contain an image file under its sources folder, while a network share may expose a Windows folder or component store. Do not guess an index or point DISM at media from a different release. If the source is correct but the command still fails, record the error and inspect the logs.

Where can I find the evidence for this error?
Logs identify the package, pending transaction or missing source file that generic commands cannot show.

Open the files in a text editor and search around the timestamp of the failed attempt for 0x800F0827, pending, package, source or failed. Capture the nearby package identity and any source-file error before changing more settings. Those details determine whether the next step is a different source, an update-specific repair or escalation.
When should I use an in-place repair upgrade?
Use an in-place repair upgrade when a restart, DISM, SFC, Windows Update troubleshooting and a matching repair source have not restored servicing. It reinstalls Windows system components while aiming to preserve applications and personal files, making it less destructive than a clean installation.
- Back up important documents and verify that you can access your backup before starting.
- Use current Microsoft installation-media instructions for the same Windows release and architecture.
- Start Setup from within the running Windows installation rather than booting directly from the media.
- When Setup presents preservation choices, select the option that keeps personal files and apps. If that option is unavailable, stop and resolve the edition, language or media mismatch before continuing.
- Allow the upgrade to complete through its restarts, then run Windows Update and verify the original servicing task.
A clean installation is a different procedure that removes applications and can remove personal data; it should not be treated as the default response to 0x800F0827.

- Use only a repair source that matches the installed Windows release and architecture.
- Save CBS.log and dism.log excerpts before escalating, because the package and source errors are machine-specific.

Is error 0x800F0827 a sign that my PC has a virus?
No. The code describes a Windows servicing transaction that requires a shutdown or restart. It does not identify malware; investigate security concerns separately with your normal, up-to-date antivirus protection.
Can I run sfc /scannow before DISM?
You can, but it is not the preferred repair order. DISM repairs the component store that supplies replacement files, so run DISM first and then run SFC to check protected system files.
Why does DISM sometimes need an internet connection?
