Error 0x800A0006 is Visual Basic or VBA Error 6: Overflow. It usually means an application, macro, or component tried to assign or calculate a value that its destination type or property cannot hold. The fix is usually in that operation—not a Windows registry or driver setting. Find which program raised the message, identify the failing line or action, and correct the value, conversion, or destination type. Windows repair steps belong only in the separate case where the error appears during Windows setup or an update.
What does error 0x800A0006 mean?
The code is the hexadecimal HRESULT form of Visual Basic/VBA Error 6, named CTL_E_OVERFLOW in an HRESULT reference. Microsoft’s Visual Basic documentation describes overflow as an assignment that exceeds the limits of its target. In practical terms, the result or value does not fit the variable, property, or other destination receiving it.

The code identifies the kind of failure, not the program that caused it. It may surface in a VBA macro, a classic Visual Basic or ActiveX application, a script, or a component used by another program. Seeing the same code on Windows 10 or Windows 11 does not by itself mean that Windows is damaged.
Overflow can occur at more than the final assignment. An intermediate calculation may exceed its type’s range, a conversion may force a value into a narrower type, or a property may reject a value outside its accepted limits. VBA can also coerce some numeric expressions to an integer type; Microsoft’s VBA reference notes that using an explicitly wider type such as Long can avoid that specific kind of overflow, provided the result fits the wider type.

What should you check before changing anything?
Start by establishing where and when the error occurs. That determines whether you should inspect application logic or troubleshoot Windows setup and updating.
- Write down the application’s name and version, the Windows edition and version, the exact action that triggers the message, and the complete dialog text.
- If a macro or script is involved, record its name and the input values in use when the error appeared. Note whether the failure happens every time or only with certain data.
- Decide whether the error appears inside one application during normal use, or specifically while Windows is installing, setting up, or updating. Do not apply operating-system repair steps to an application overflow unless there is evidence that Windows maintenance is involved.
- If the program displays a line number, procedure name, or debugging option, preserve that information. Avoid editing the registry or replacing DLL files based on the code alone; those are not general fixes for Error 6.
How do you fix the error in a VBA macro or code you can edit?
Reproduce the error under controlled conditions, locate the operation that raises it, and trace the values through the calculation and assignment. Correct the range mismatch rather than hiding the runtime error.

- Open the macro or project in the editor used for that application, then run the same procedure with the same input that produced the error.
- When the debugger stops, inspect the highlighted line and identify the destination: a variable, property, or function argument. If the application only shows a dialog, use its debugging or logging facilities if available.
- Write down the values and types of the operands, the intermediate result, and the destination type. For a property assignment, check the value being assigned against the property’s allowed range.
Do not assume the variable named on the last line is the only possible cause. A conversion or earlier calculation on that line can fail before the final value reaches its destination.
2. Check each calculation and conversion
Follow the data from its source to its destination. Look for a value that becomes larger than expected, an operation that produces an unexpected result, or a conversion that narrows the value. Pay particular attention to multiplication, division, modulo operations, date or serial calculations, and expressions that mix numeric types.

In VBA, explicit conversions such as CInt or CLng make the intended type clearer, but a conversion does not make an out-of-range value fit. A narrower conversion can introduce the problem, and a wider destination only helps when the result fits that type as well. Check each intermediate result, not just the variable receiving the final answer.
3. Use a destination type that fits the result
If the calculation can legitimately produce a value larger than the current type supports, change the variable or receiving property to a suitable type. In VBA, Microsoft specifically points to using an explicitly wider type such as Long to avoid some overflows caused by integer coercion. Confirm that the entire expression is evaluated in a suitable type; changing only the final variable may not correct an overflow that happens earlier.
For example, if an expression is being coerced to an integer before it is assigned to a wider variable, declaring only the destination as Long may leave the intermediate operation unchanged. Inspect the expression and make the intended conversions deliberate. Do not choose a type merely because it sounds larger: verify that it is appropriate for the value and for any functions or properties using it.
4. Add a handler for diagnosis, not concealment
An unhandled Visual Basic runtime error stops execution. While diagnosing the problem, an error handler can record the error number, description, and the context of the operation. In VBA, a basic structure looks like this:

End SubUse the handler to identify where execution failed and capture useful context, such as the input record or procedure name. Then fix the calculation, conversion, or assignment that exceeds its limit. A handler that simply suppresses the error or continues with an invalid result can make the underlying problem harder to find.
What if the error is in an older program or component?
If you cannot edit the macro or application, gather enough detail for its developer or vendor to investigate. The code alone does not identify which component or operation is responsible.
- Record the program name and version, your Windows version and build, the exact steps leading to the error, and the complete message.
- Include the input values or document involved, if you can share them safely, and note whether the issue is limited to one file or one operation.
- If the program provides a log, event entry, or failing procedure name, preserve it. Ask the vendor whether that version supports your Windows release and whether a corrected version is available.
- Avoid replacing system or application DLLs, changing registry values, or installing unrelated driver tools as a speculative fix. The error points to an overflow, but it does not identify a safe file replacement or registry edit.
If the error began after changing an input, document, macro, or application version, compare the failing case with one that works. That can help isolate the value or operation that crossed a limit. Do not overwrite the original file while testing; work from a copy when the application allows it.
What should you do if it appears during Windows setup or an update?
First confirm that the dialog appears during setup or Windows Update rather than while an application happens to be open. Microsoft’s general setup guidance includes removing nonessential hardware, installing pending updates, considering a clean boot if background software interferes, and checking system files with SFC and DISM. For update-specific problems, Microsoft also documents using the Windows Update troubleshooter, resetting the update cache, checking automatic date and time, and updating third-party drivers.

Try the least disruptive checks first
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware, such as devices not needed for the update or setup, and retry the operation.
- Check Windows Update for pending updates and install them if Windows can complete the process. Make sure the system’s date and time are set automatically.
- If the error occurs during an update, run the Windows Update troubleshooter available in Windows Settings. The exact troubleshooter location can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11, so use the troubleshooters listed for your installed version.
- If background software may be interfering, consider a clean boot and retry. Because a clean boot changes which services and startup programs run, restore normal startup settings after the test if it does not help.
Check Windows system files when setup or update context supports it
System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) are built-in Windows tools for checking or repairing system data. Use them only as part of troubleshooting an actual setup or update problem; they are not a direct fix for a macro’s out-of-range calculation.
- Open Terminal or Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand let it finish. - Run
sfc /scannowand wait for its result before retrying setup or Windows Update.
Reset the Windows Update cache if the failure is update-specific
Microsoft’s update guidance describes stopping the Windows Update service, clearing the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and restarting the service. This is a targeted update troubleshooting step, not a general response to 0x800A0006 in an application.
- Open the Services app, locate Windows Update, and stop the service.
- In File Explorer, open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionand clear its contents. Do not delete the folder itself. - Return to Services, start Windows Update, and retry the update.
If an update still fails, note the update and the exact failure context before escalating. Microsoft’s guidance also advises updating third-party drivers where relevant; that advice does not mean an arbitrary driver change will correct an overflow raised by a macro or application.

Escalate when the failing operation is inside software you cannot edit, when a code change would risk corrupting data, or when Windows setup or update continues to fail after the relevant built-in checks. Send the developer the application version, Windows version and build, exact reproduction steps, input values where appropriate, and any error or event log details. For editable code, include the failing line and the types and intermediate values involved.
That evidence is more useful than the error number alone: 0x800A0006 identifies an overflow condition, while the program’s operation determines what value or destination caused it.

Can I keep using the program after this error appears?
That depends on what the program was doing when execution stopped and whether it saved any changes before the error. Check the document or output before repeating an operation that could write data, and contact the developer if the result may be incomplete.
Why did the same macro work before but overflow now?
A changed input, a larger accumulated value, or a different calculation path can push a previously valid result beyond its destination’s limits. Compare a failing case with a successful one and trace where their values first diverge.
Does 0x800A0006 tell me which application caused the problem?
No. The HRESULT identifies the Visual Basic overflow error, but the program, macro, script, or component that surfaced it must be identified from the context in which the dialog appeared.
