Error 0x80070057 does not have a confirmed, Microsoft-documented cause specific to the Microsoft Store. The correct fix depends on where you saw it: while opening Store, while downloading or updating an app, or in Windows Update. Start by recording the exact operation and screen. If Store itself will not open, reset its cache with wsreset.exe, then check Windows updates, time and location settings. If one app is failing, sign in, reopen it, update Store and Windows, and use the app’s Repair, Reset or reinstall options. If the code appeared in Windows Update, follow the separate Windows Update path with System File Checker and the Windows Update troubleshooter rather than assuming a Store cache problem.

What does error 0x80070057 mean in Microsoft Store?

It is a hexadecimal Windows error code, but the code alone does not identify the failing component. Microsoft documents 0x80070057 in its Windows Update troubleshooting material; that material does not establish the cause of the same code when it appears in Microsoft Store. In the Windows Update context, Microsoft associates the code with possibilities such as corrupted files, permission issues or incorrect system configuration. Those associations should not be presented as a diagnosis for a Store failure.

Before changing anything, write down:

  • Whether you were opening Microsoft Store, downloading an app, installing an app, updating an app or installing Windows itself.
  • The app name, if only one app was involved.
  • Whether the message appeared immediately or after a download had started.
  • Your Windows edition and build, and whether other Store apps work.

Use the operation that matches your symptom. Identical codes can require different troubleshooting branches.

Where the code appeared What to try first What not to assume
Store will not open Reset the Store cache, then check Windows updates and time/location settings. Do not assume the Store package is corrupted solely because of the code.
One Store app will not download, install or update Sign in, reopen the app, update Windows and Store, then repair, reset or reinstall that app. Do not treat an app-availability restriction as proof of a damaged system.
Several Store operations fail Complete the general Store checklist and collect details for support if it persists. Do not jump to registry edits or broad package removal.
Windows Update reports the code Use the Windows Update troubleshooter and System File Checker. Do not apply a Store-only cache recipe as the complete fix.

How do I fix 0x80070057 when Microsoft Store will not open?

For a launch failure, Microsoft’s documented first action is to reset the Store cache. This is general Store launch guidance, not a guaranteed remedy for this particular code.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Reset the cache. Press Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog, type wsreset.exe, and select OK. A blank Command Prompt window appears. Microsoft says it closes after about ten seconds and Microsoft Store opens automatically.
  2. Wait for the reset to finish. Do not close the blank window while it is running. If Store does not open after the window closes, try launching it from the Start menu once.
  3. Install pending Windows updates. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Restart when Windows requests it, then test Store again.
  4. Check date, time and location. Open the date and time settings and verify that the time zone and clock are correct; enable automatic time if it is available. Check the Windows region or location setting as well. Store availability and licensing can depend on regional settings, so an incorrect location can interfere with Store behavior even when the code does not identify that cause.
  5. Try Store again after signing in. If Store opens but asks for an account, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your apps. If it still fails to launch, record the exact message and proceed to support-oriented escalation rather than repeatedly running the reset.

The cache reset does not explain why the code appeared, and Microsoft does not state that it fixes every Store launch error. Its value is that it is a built-in, low-risk first step specifically documented for a Store that will not open.

What should I do when a Store app will not download, install or update?

When Store itself opens and the failure concerns an app, follow Microsoft’s general app troubleshooting sequence. Work through the steps in order and test the same operation after each one.

1. Confirm the account and reopen the app

Make sure Microsoft Store is signed in to the account you intend to use. Close the affected app and Store, reopen Store, and try the download or update again. If only one app fails while other apps work, keep the app name and exact operation in your notes; that distinction helps separate an app-specific problem from a Store-wide problem.

2. Update Windows

Use the Windows Update page for your version of Windows, install available updates and restart. An updated Store client and updated system components can be prerequisites for current app packages.

3. Update Microsoft Store

In Windows 11, open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates. In Windows 10, open Microsoft Store and use its Library or Downloads and updates area to select Get updates, depending on the Store version installed. Let Store finish checking before attempting the app again.

4. Repair the affected app

Repair changes the app installation without immediately discarding its stored state. On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the app, select its three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair when available. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the app, choose Advanced options, and select Repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Reset the affected app

If Repair does not help, return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset, if the option is offered. Resetting can remove the app’s local data and settings, so use it only after checking whether the app stores anything locally that you need. Microsoft presents Reset as a general app-repair option; it is not a confirmed fix for the specific code.

6. Reinstall the app

Uninstall the affected app from its Windows app settings, restart if Windows asks, then install it again from Microsoft Store. Reinstallation is most appropriate when the problem remains limited to one app and Repair and Reset have not restored installation or updating.

7. Use the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter when available

Windows 10 includes a Windows Store Apps troubleshooter in its troubleshooting settings. If it is present on your installation, run it and apply only the changes it reports. Windows 11’s Settings layout may not show the same troubleshooter, so do not infer that its absence indicates a fault.

Why can’t I find or install a particular app?

An app that is missing, unavailable or blocked from installation may reflect availability rules rather than error 0x80070057. Microsoft lists several checks for this situation, but does not identify any of them as the cause of the code.

  • Account: A different Microsoft account may have different purchases, permissions or age settings. Confirm the account shown in Store.
  • App status: The publisher may have removed the app, or it may no longer be offered for your Windows version. Store cannot install an app that is no longer available.

These checks explain visibility and eligibility; they do not prove that any setting caused 0x80070057. If the app is visible and eligible but installation still fails, return to the app troubleshooting sequence.

What if 0x80070057 appeared in Windows Update instead?

If the message was shown on the Windows Update page, treat it as a Windows Update failure, not a Microsoft Store diagnosis. Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance lists 0x80070057 among update failure codes and recommends System File Checker and the Windows Update troubleshooter.

Run System File Checker

  1. Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges. You can search for Command Prompt from Start, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  2. At the prompt, enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  3. Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while it is checking protected system files.
  4. Restart Windows if requested, then retry Windows Update.

The command is a Windows Update troubleshooting action in Microsoft’s guidance. It does not establish that Store files are damaged when the same hexadecimal code appears in Store.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, locate Windows Update, and select Run. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and run the troubleshooter. Apply its recommended action, restart if prompted and check for updates again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows Update completes successfully but Store still reports the code, return to the Store branch. Success in one component does not prove that the other component has the same underlying problem.

What deeper checks are appropriate when the basic steps fail?

Microsoft’s detailed Store-app troubleshooting material is written for support agents and IT professionals. It discusses whether an app is registered for the user, re-registration for activation problems, missing or corrupted packages, permissions, AppLocker policy and event logs. Those areas can matter in managed or heavily customized Windows installations, but they are not a reason for an ordinary user to run broad administrative scripts or remove packages without guidance.

Check for policy or network blocking

Microsoft also notes that a policy such as RemoveWindowsStore can block Store from opening. Firewall or proxy configuration can block endpoints required for Store downloads. If the computer belongs to an employer, school or family-managed environment, ask the administrator whether a policy, proxy or security control is intentional before changing it.

Use event details instead of guessing

For a persistent failure, gather the exact error text, the operation that triggered it, Windows version and build, the affected app, whether other apps work, and the time of the failure. An administrator or Microsoft support agent can use relevant event-log entries and package information to choose a targeted action. Avoid registry edits, package removal or unrestricted PowerShell re-registration commands copied from unrelated forums; a wrong command can create a second problem and the available Microsoft guidance does not present those actions as a universal fix for this code.

How do I choose the next step quickly?

Symptom Recommended order Stop and escalate when
Store does not open at all wsreset.exe → Windows Update → date/time and region checks → sign-in test. The cache reset completes but Store still will not launch.
One app fails Sign in → close/reopen → update Windows and Store → Repair → Reset → reinstall. Repair, Reset and reinstall all fail for the same app.
Many apps fail Complete the Store checklist, verify policy/network conditions, then collect logs and system details. Failures continue after updates and cache reset, especially on a managed PC.
Windows Update shows the code Run sfc /scannow and the Windows Update troubleshooter. Updates still fail after the Windows Update branch completes.

Keep the branches separate in your notes and when contacting support. Reporting “Store error 0x80070057” without saying whether Store launch, an app install or Windows Update failed can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while offering cleanup and settings tools. It includes a free trial by category of at least two days, then requires a subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash or Store failure.
