Error 0x80006599 has no verified, code-specific definition in Microsoft’s published Windows error tables. Treat it as an unidentified error from the component that displayed it, not as proof of a particular Windows fault or malware. First record whether it appeared in Windows Update, Windows setup, recovery, or a named application. Then run the matching troubleshooter, repair Windows system files, reset update components when appropriate, and check drivers, peripherals, security software, and application logs. The steps below apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10, with a support-life warning for Windows 10.
What is error 0x80006599?
Microsoft does not currently publish a verified meaning for 0x80006599. A hexadecimal-looking value can be returned by Windows, an installer, a driver, a runtime, or unrelated third-party software. Without the message around the code, the program name, and the event that triggered it, assigning a single cause would be guesswork.

Where does the code appear, and which repair should come first?
Note the exact screen, action, and time at which the code appears. Use that observation to select the first branch instead of applying every repair at random.

- Save open work and create a backup of important files. Do not power off while an update is actively installing unless the computer is completely unresponsive and the screen gives no other option.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external drives, printers, scanners, headsets, docks, and card readers. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection attached.
- Sign in with an administrator account or have administrator credentials available. Several repairs require an elevated console.
- If the problem started immediately after a driver, antivirus, dock, or hardware change, record that change; it is a stronger clue than the number alone.
How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?
Use this branch when the code appears while Windows is checking for or installing updates. Microsoft’s support guidance recommends running the troubleshooter, restarting, and checking for updates again.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run. Windows 11 may also launch the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app; follow its prompts.
- Allow the checks and attempted repairs to finish. Note any action it could not complete.
- Restart the PC, return to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart when it finishes, then open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check again.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not repair a component, keep the result. It helps distinguish an update-cache problem from a deeper servicing or driver issue.
Could incorrect time or network settings trigger the failure?
Yes. Update signatures and secure connections depend on a correct clock, and an interrupted connection can leave an incomplete update transaction.

- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Start > Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10.
- Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically.
- Select Sync now when that option is available.
- Use a stable connection, disable a VPN or metered connection temporarily if it is interfering with downloads, and retry Windows Update.
How do I reset the Windows Update cache?
Use this procedure when the error is specifically tied to Windows Update and the troubleshooter did not resolve it. Microsoft notes that corrupt cached update files can cause update errors.

- Press Windows + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services console, locate Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop. Leave the console open.
- Open File Explorer and browse to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped; do not force-delete unrelated system files. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart Windows and check for updates again.
Windows will recreate the cache contents. Previously downloaded update files may need to be downloaded again, so allow extra time on a slow connection.
How do I repair Windows with DISM and SFC?
When the code appears during updating or setup, damaged component-store files or protected system files can prevent installation. Run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) first, then System File Checker (SFC), in an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to reach completion:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth- After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow- Restart the PC even if SFC reports that it found no integrity violations.
- Retry the update or setup operation that produced 0x80006599.
Do not close the window simply because the percentage pauses; servicing can take time. If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, make sure the PC has a working connection and that pending updates are not waiting for a restart. Continue with the servicing-stack and manual-update checks below rather than repeatedly running the same command.
What if Windows still cannot install the update?
Microsoft’s deeper update guidance recommends using the latest servicing stack update and, when necessary, installing the specific update manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Install the servicing stack update
Search Windows Update for available servicing-stack updates for your exact Windows edition and version. Install the applicable package, restart when requested, and run Windows Update again. A servicing-stack update changes the component that handles servicing; it is not interchangeable between Windows releases, so verify the edition and architecture before installing.
Install one update manually
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and identify the failed update’s knowledge-base number, usually shown in a form such as
KB1234567. - Use that KB number in the Microsoft Update Catalog search.
- Choose the package matching your Windows version, edition, and processor architecture. Read the catalog entry’s applicability notes before downloading.
- Install the downloaded package, restart, and check Windows Update again.
If the catalog package also fails, retain its error text and the original update history entry. Those details are more useful to Microsoft or the software maker than 0x80006599 by itself.
Which hardware and drivers should I check?
External hardware and incompatible drivers are common blockers during setup and upgrades. Microsoft recommends removing nonessential devices and checking Device Manager.
- Unplug external storage, printers, scanners, headsets, docks, USB hubs, and adapters that are not required to operate the PC.
- Open Start, search for Device Manager, and open it.
- Look for a yellow warning icon, an unknown device, or a device that appeared after the problem began.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- For a recently changed device, use Properties > Driver to inspect the provider, date, and version. If the issue began after an update, the Roll Back Driver option may be appropriate; otherwise obtain a current driver from the hardware maker.
- Reconnect devices one at a time after the update succeeds so you can identify a repeatable trigger.
A driver update should match the exact hardware model and Windows edition. Avoid installing a package intended for a different device simply because its name looks similar.

Should I remove third-party security software or use a clean boot?
Security software and background services can interfere with setup and updating, but removing protection changes your risk. Microsoft includes temporary removal of third-party antivirus or security software and a clean boot in its upgrade checklist.

Temporarily remove third-party security software
Only do this if you can download the current installer again and you are working from a trusted network. Use the product’s own uninstall process, restart, complete the Windows operation, and reinstall protection immediately afterward if the software is still compatible. Do not treat this step as proof that the software caused the error.
Perform a clean boot
- Press Windows + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled non-Microsoft startup items.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
- Retry the update or setup. If it succeeds, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting between groups, until the conflicting item is identified.
- Return to
msconfigand choose Normal startup after testing so normal services load again.
How do I investigate an application that shows 0x80006599?
If Windows Update and setup work normally and only one application reports the code, use that application’s context instead of repeatedly repairing Windows.
- Record the application’s name, version, file path, and the exact action that triggers the error.
- Check the application’s own log or diagnostic folder for a timestamp matching the failure.
- Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > Application around the same time. Look for the faulting application, module, or runtime named in the event details.
- Use the application’s repair or reinstall option, then apply updates from its official publisher.
- Give the publisher the complete message and log entry. A vendor may define a code that Microsoft does not use for Windows itself.
Can Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool decode 0x80006599?
Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool, also known as ERR, is a command-line utility that decodes many Microsoft error codes, but it does not guarantee a result for every hexadecimal value. Version 6.4.5 was listed in the Microsoft Download Center on July 15, 2024.

What changes for Windows 10 after October 14, 2025?
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A repair can correct a local update failure, but it cannot restore services that are no longer supplied for the edition and support program you are using. Check your eligibility and migration options before spending substantial time on repeated update attempts.
When should I stop troubleshooting and seek help?
Escalate when the code appears before Windows reaches the desktop, the PC repeatedly restarts, storage health warnings appear, or DISM and SFC report errors that persist after a restart.
