Error 0x80006159 has no confirmed Microsoft mapping in the Windows 10 or Windows 11 error tables reviewed for this guide, so the code alone does not identify a single cause or a guaranteed fix. First record the complete message, the program that displayed it, what was being installed, and any related log entry. Then choose the repair path that matches the symptom: remove upgrade blockers, run the correct Windows Update troubleshooter, repair system files with DISM and SFC when corruption is indicated, or reset the Windows Update cache only when update files appear damaged. A USB drive is optional installation or recovery media, not a code-specific cure.
What does error 0x80006159 mean?
At present, Microsoft’s published Windows 10 and Windows 11 update and upgrade tables do not assign a documented meaning to 0x80006159. That makes it unsafe to label the code as a Windows Update error, a virus warning, a driver failure, or a component-store problem without knowing which process produced it.

What should I record before changing anything?
Capture the evidence while the failure is visible. This prevents a later repair step from removing the clues needed to identify the owner of the code.

- Copy the complete message. Include every sentence before and after 0x80006159, not just the hexadecimal value.
- Identify the program. Note whether the dialog came from Windows Update, a Windows feature, an application installer, a game launcher, or another program. Record the program version if it is shown.
- Write down the trigger. Record the update, package, driver, or application being installed and whether the error appeared during download, installation, restart, or first launch.
- Note repeatability. Restart once and record whether the same action fails again, fails at a different stage, or succeeds.
- Save nearby logs. In Event Viewer, inspect Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the failure time. For an installer, preserve any log offered by that installer. Copy the event source, event ID, timestamp, and the full error text.
These details determine whether an update-cache repair is relevant or whether the problem belongs to a particular application’s setup routine.

How do I apply Microsoft’s general upgrade checks?
Microsoft recommends starting with basic upgrade hygiene before searching for a specific code. These checks are low risk and often reveal a hardware, driver, or security conflict.
- Disconnect nonessential hardware. Unplug printers, scanners, speakers, USB flash drives, external hard drives, and other accessories that are not required for the upgrade. If a laptop is docked, undock it.
- Install pending Windows updates. Open Settings, select Windows Update, install available updates, restart, and check again. Also install available driver updates from Windows Update where offered.
- Inspect Device Manager. Right-click Start, open Device Manager, and look for a yellow exclamation mark. Resolve the marked device or disconnect it before retrying the upgrade; note the device name for your records.
- Temporarily remove third-party antivirus or antispyware when appropriate. Security software can interfere with an upgrade. Use its documented uninstall or disable process, restart if requested, and restore protection immediately after the test. Do not treat this as evidence that the code indicates malware.
- Repair disk errors. Use the storage device’s error-checking option or the disk-repair procedure appropriate to your Windows edition. Back up important files before any repair that reports disk problems.
Microsoft’s guidance states: “Before searching for a specific error code, try the tips listed in General fixes.” If one of these checks changes the behavior, record which change mattered before continuing.
How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter on Windows 11?
Windows 11 provides an automated troubleshooter in Get Help and a Settings path. Use the Settings path when you want to see the Windows Update troubleshooter entry directly.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the prompts and allow the checks to finish. Apply a suggested fix only after reading what it changes.
- Restart Windows, then return to Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
You can also open the Get Help app and search for the automated Windows Update troubleshooter. If the failure remains, Microsoft advises running the troubleshooter again to check for additional errors or following the separate Windows Update troubleshooting steps.
How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter on Windows 10?
The Windows 10 menu names differ from Windows 11, but the sequence is similar.

- Complete the checks, restart the computer, and open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and retry the update or upgrade that produced 0x80006159.
If the troubleshooter reports a problem it could not repair, copy that result into your diagnostic notes. It may identify a service, database, or configuration issue that is more specific than the hexadecimal code.
When should I run DISM and SFC?
Use these commands when the symptoms or logs point to missing source files, damaged Windows components, or corrupted system files. Microsoft’s error guidance connects this repair to component-store conditions such as 0x800f081f; it does not establish that 0x80006159 itself means component-store corruption.
- Save open work and connect the PC to reliable power. Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run the component-store repair and wait for it to complete:
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth
DISM can take time and may appear to pause at a percentage. Do not close the window while it is working. If it reports that the operation completed successfully, continue with SFC.
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
Sfc.exe /Scannow
- Wait for verification to reach 100 percent, read the result, and restart Windows.
- Retry the original update or installation once. If the command reports that it could not repair some files, preserve the exact result and the time it ran rather than repeatedly launching the same commands.
These commands repair Windows image and system-file integrity; they are not a diagnosis for an application-specific installer. If only one application fails while Windows Update succeeds, keep the application’s installer logs as the primary evidence.
How do I reset the Windows Update cache?
Reset the cache only when update files appear corrupt, an update repeatedly fails after a restart, or the troubleshooter points toward the Windows Update datastore. Clearing the cache is not a general remedy for an unknown application-installer error.
- Sign in with an administrator account and save any work that depends on Windows Update.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
services.msc, and select OK. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update, right-click it, and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the parent Windows folder. If a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and close any update-related window before trying again.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart Windows, reconnect only the hardware you need, and run Windows Update again.
Before retrying, check the conditions that can interrupt downloading or staging:

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Verify that the network connection is stable.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN if the failure occurs while contacting update servers.
- Check available storage on the Windows drive; an update needs room for downloaded and temporary files.
- Consider whether antivirus or firewall software is blocking the update process. Use a temporary, documented test and restore protection afterward.
If the same code returns but the update history shows a different package or stage, record that change. The cache reset may have removed one symptom without identifying the component that owns 0x80006159.
What if the error comes from an application installer instead of Windows Update?
Do not assume that Windows Update repairs will fix an application setup failure. First identify the application, version, package name, and installation stage, then preserve the installer log or Event Viewer entry that contains the code.

- If Windows Update and other installers work, focus on the application’s own repair, uninstall, or installation-media procedure.
- If the installer reports access denied, missing files, or a blocked operation, check the log for the named path and verify that the account has permission to use it.
- If the failure began after a restart or security-software change, record that timing and test only one change at a time.
- If several unrelated installers and Windows Update fail, return to the general upgrade checks, disk condition, and conditional DISM/SFC repair.
This approach prevents an application error from being misclassified as a Windows Update-cache problem.
Do I need a USB flash drive for this error?
No. A USB flash drive for Windows installation media is optional and is not a proven direct fix for 0x80006159.
Microsoft references the Windows Media Creation Tool and in-place upgrade media for particular installation failures. In those cases, a USB drive can store the media so you can start setup or recovery from it. Use media only when the documented recovery path calls for it, and select the correct Windows edition and architecture for the installation you are repairing.
Because the code has no confirmed mapping, buying a drive or booting from one before identifying the failing component can add complexity without addressing the cause. Keep the diagnostic context and logs even if media is used.
How does Windows 10 support status affect troubleshooting?
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The Settings paths and repair commands described here may still be present on an existing Windows 10 installation, but the end-of-support date matters when deciding whether an update failure is a transient repair issue or part of a broader migration decision. Confirm the edition and servicing status shown on the affected PC before planning a long-term repair.
When should I stop repeating fixes and seek targeted help?
Stop cycling through generic repairs when the error keeps returning after a restart, the failing application is clearly identified, or logs consistently name a specific file, package, or service. At that point, provide the complete message, application and version, Windows edition, update or package name, exact time, Event Viewer or installer-log entries, and the steps already attempted to the relevant software or support channel.

If the computer becomes unstable, cannot boot normally, or reports disk errors, prioritize a current backup and the recovery procedure appropriate to that state instead of repeatedly retrying the same update. A USB recovery environment can be useful in that situation, but it remains a recovery option rather than a special solution for the hexadecimal code.

It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Is there a published free-space number required to clear this error?
No universal threshold is established for 0x80006159. Check the Windows drive for enough room for the specific update or installer plus temporary files, and use the package’s stated requirements when they are available.
Will running DISM and SFC remove my personal documents?
Those commands target the Windows image and protected system files, not a user’s document library. Save your work first, let each command finish, and keep the result text if the repair reports files it could not fix.
Should I keep running the troubleshooter until the code disappears?
No. Microsoft allows another run to check for additional errors, but repeated identical runs add little information. After a second attempt, use the new result, update history, or log entry to choose a different branch.
Can the same code be fixed differently on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
The underlying diagnosis is the same, but the Windows Update troubleshooter menu paths differ. Use the path for your edition, and remember that Windows 10 reached its Microsoft support end date on October 14, 2025.
