First, verify the code: Microsoft’s documented “Unspecified error” in shared-folder and Windows-upgrade troubleshooting is 0x80004005, not 0x80004035. The two codes should not be treated as interchangeable. If your screen really shows 0x80004035, note which app or Windows task displayed it and use the steps below only when the symptoms match: the network-share checks apply to a failed shared-folder or NAS connection, while the upgrade checks apply to a Windows Update or Setup failure.
If you meant 0x80004005, identify where it appears before changing anything. For a network drive, start with the connection and sharing checks. For an upgrade, use the separate Windows Setup path. Avoid applying SMB or registry changes to an upgrade error without evidence that a network share is involved.

Record the exact hexadecimal code and the full message, then note what you were doing when it appeared. An error while opening \servershare, a NAS, or a mapped drive points to a network-sharing problem; an error during Windows Update or Setup belongs to the upgrade path. Microsoft’s relevant troubleshooting pages describe 0x80004005 as “Unspecified error.” They do not establish that 0x80004035 is the same error, so if the latter is definitely what you see, check the application’s own documentation or support information rather than assuming these fixes are code-specific.
- For a shared folder, check that the host computer or NAS is powered on and reachable, and that both devices are on the same local network.
- For an upgrade, record which setup phase failed and the update history code before trying again.
- Begin with reversible checks. Do not enable legacy sharing protocols or weaken guest-access security just to see whether the message disappears.
The error code by itself does not identify which part of a connection or upgrade failed. For a share, the problem could be at the network, discovery, SMB, credentials, or permission layer. For Setup, the generic code may need to be considered alongside the phase, logs, disk space, and recently installed drivers. Keeping those two situations separate prevents a risky change in one area from being mistaken for a general-purpose fix.

How do I fix the error when opening a shared folder or NAS?
Work through the connection in layers: local network and discovery first, then direct access, account permissions, name resolution, and protocol compatibility. This order helps narrow the fault without weakening security unnecessarily.
1. Set a trusted network to Private and enable sharing
- Open Settings > Network & internet, select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then open the connected network’s properties. On a trusted home or office network, set the network profile to Private. Do not use this setting to make an untrusted public network more discoverable.
- Go to Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings. Under Private networks, turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing.
- Confirm that the computer hosting the folder and the computer connecting to it are on the same network. Microsoft’s sharing guidance lists the network profile, discovery, file sharing, and same-network checks as relevant Windows 10 and 11 settings.
On older Windows 10 interfaces, the corresponding controls may be under Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings. If the network is managed by an organization, follow its policy rather than changing a profile or sharing setting without approval.
Network discovery and file sharing address whether Windows can find and share devices on the local network; they do not grant a particular user access to every folder. If the computer appears in File Explorer but opening the share fails, continue to the direct connection and permissions checks instead of repeatedly toggling discovery. Conversely, if the server does not appear while direct access by name works, the browsing or discovery layer may be the part that needs attention.
2. Check the services that advertise computers and devices
Network discovery depends on Windows services. Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. For each service below, open its properties, set Startup type to Automatic, and select Start if it is stopped:
- Function Discovery Provider Host
- Function Discovery Resource Publication
- SSDP Discovery
- UPnP Device Host
These services help make a computer visible for network sharing. If a service cannot start, note the exact service name and any message Windows displays; that is more useful than repeatedly changing unrelated sharing settings.
Check the status of the listed services rather than changing unrelated services. A service that is already running does not prove that the server, credentials, or folder permissions are correct; it only removes one possible discovery issue from the list. If the share is accessed by a direct path and discovery is not part of the failure, the later checks may be more relevant.

3. Connect directly instead of browsing in File Explorer
Use Command Prompt to test the share directly. Open Command Prompt and run this command, replacing the drive letter, server, and share with the values for your network:
net use Z: \ServerNameShareName
If Windows reports an authentication or access problem, focus on credentials and permissions. If it cannot find the server or share, check the server name, connection, and name resolution. A successful direct connection when browsing fails can point to the Explorer browsing or discovery layer rather than proving that every sharing setting is correct.

- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
You can also try the server’s current IP address temporarily, for example \192.168.1.20Share. If that works while the server name does not, name resolution is a likely area to investigate. An IP address is not necessarily a durable fix: if the network assigns addresses through DHCP, the address may change. Ask the network administrator about reserving the address or repairing DNS/name resolution instead of relying on a temporary address.
Keep a note of what each test does: browsing by computer name, connecting with net use, and connecting by IP address are not identical tests. If the IP path works but the name path does not, that is useful evidence about name resolution; it does not establish that permissions should be loosened. If neither path works, confirm the host is on and that the share name and path are correct before changing Windows features.
4. Check both sets of folder permissions
The computer hosting the folder has two permission layers, and the connecting account must be allowed by both:
- On the folder’s Sharing tab, open Advanced Sharing > Permissions to review access over the network.
- On the folder’s Security tab, review NTFS permissions for the same account.
Grant access to the specific user or group that needs it, using the narrowest permission that supports the task. Do not grant Full Control to Everyone on an untrusted network. A share can appear reachable while the account is still denied by its share permissions or NTFS permissions.
Review the account that is actually being used to connect, not just the account signed in on the PC that hosts the folder. A permission granted at only one layer is not enough if the other layer blocks that account. Make the smallest necessary change and retest; broad permissions can expose files beyond the person or task that needs access.
5. Check saved credentials and guest access
If Windows keeps trying an old account, open Credential Manager, remove the saved credential for that server, and reconnect using the intended account. Prefer a named account with a password on the computer or NAS hosting the files.
If Windows says organizational security policies block unauthenticated guest access, the server is attempting guest authentication. Microsoft documents ways to allow insecure guest access through Group Policy or the registry, but enabling it lowers security. Treat that as a controlled legacy exception, not a general fix; use named credentials where possible. A password or guest-policy change will not correct an offline server or an incorrect share path.
Do not change guest policy merely because access is denied. First verify whether the server is actually configured for guest access and whether you can instead use an account that the server recognizes. If the PC belongs to an organization, ask its administrator before changing Group Policy or registry settings. This avoids turning a narrow access problem into a less secure configuration for other connections.

6. Check NetBIOS and IP settings only when they apply
Some environments rely on NetBIOS for discovery or name resolution. Microsoft’s Windows Client guidance advises checking that TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper is set to start automatically and that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled when the network depends on it. These settings are not a universal requirement for every modern network.
The same Microsoft guidance discusses specifying a valid IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, preferred DNS server, and alternate DNS server for a particular shared-folder troubleshooting case. Do not guess static network values: use an address plan supplied by the network administrator. A duplicate or incorrect address can create a separate connectivity problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
These checks are most useful when a name-based connection fails or the network is known to depend on NetBIOS or manually assigned addressing. They are not reasons to replace working automatic settings on every PC. If you do not know the network’s intended address plan, stop and get the valid values rather than copying settings from another device; two devices using the same address can interfere with one another.
7. Treat SMB1 as a temporary compatibility measure
Microsoft states that “The SMBv1 network protocol is no longer installed by default.” SMBv2 and SMBv3 are modern protocols and are part of the same driver, so they cannot be disabled separately. An old NAS or other device that supports only SMB1 may therefore fail to connect to a current Windows installation.
If you have confirmed that the device requires SMB1, the documented Windows feature path is Turn Windows features on or off > SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support > SMB 1.0/CIFS Client. Use this only as a temporary compatibility workaround for a device you trust and cannot yet update or replace. SMB1 lacks modern security protections; do not enable it as a routine troubleshooting step or leave it on without a specific legacy need.
Before using this workaround, establish that the NAS or device is old and that its supported protocol is the likely compatibility issue. Enabling SMB1 cannot repair a wrong share name, an offline device, a rejected password, or insufficient folder permissions. Updating or replacing a legacy device is preferable when possible because it avoids depending on a protocol Microsoft no longer installs by default.

If the connection still fails, Microsoft’s Ethernet guidance lists these commands for resetting network components and refreshing the DNS cache. In an administrator Command Prompt, run them one at a time:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Restart Windows after the commands, then try the share again. If the device is using a static address, consult the network administrator before releasing or renewing its configuration.

These commands are broader than checking a share path or correcting one account’s permissions, so use them after the targeted checks and record any relevant network settings first. If you are on a managed network or use manually assigned IP values, coordinate with the administrator before resetting the stack.
Use Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset only as a last resort. Microsoft says this removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters after restart. You may need to configure VPN clients or Hyper-V virtual switches again, so record relevant settings before using it.
When is a USB-to-Ethernet adapter useful?
A USB-to-Ethernet adapter can help compare a Wi-Fi or built-in-adapter connection with a wired network path. Microsoft includes this kind of alternate-connection test in its Ethernet troubleshooting guidance. It is an isolation tool, not a fix for incorrect permissions, a disabled sharing service, blocked guest access, or an offline server.
Use the comparison to see whether the problem changes on a different connection path. If it does, the result can help narrow the network or adapter side of the fault; if it does not, continue checking the server, account, and share configuration. The adapter is optional and should not be purchased on the assumption that it fixes every error.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if the error appears during Windows Update or Setup?
Use the upgrade path only when the failure happens during Windows Update or Windows Setup. Microsoft’s upgrade troubleshooting table associates 0x80004005 with “Unspecified error” and recommends starting with a restart, the Windows Update Troubleshooter, and an upgrade attempt in Safe Mode.
- Restart the PC and try the update or upgrade again.
- Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then follow any on-screen repair instructions.
- If the error continues, try the upgrade in Safe Mode as Microsoft’s upgrade table suggests. If the upgrade cannot be started from that environment, return to normal startup rather than changing unrelated network settings.
For failures that persist, Microsoft’s broader upgrade guidance also recommends installing current Windows and driver updates before retrying, disconnecting nonessential external hardware, uninstalling non-Microsoft antivirus during the upgrade, removing nonessential software, and trying a clean boot if background programs may be interfering. These are upgrade-specific troubleshooting measures; they do not establish that a particular program or device caused this error. If you remove security software for the attempt, plan to restore protection afterward.

Change one category at a time where practical, then retry and note the result. Disconnecting nonessential hardware is different from removing drivers or changing network protocols, and the latter are not suggested by this upgrade guidance. The goal is to reduce likely interference during Setup while preserving enough information to identify what changed if the attempt succeeds or fails again.
What details help identify a failed upgrade?
Before repeating the attempt, record the setup phase, the code in Windows Update history, available disk space, and drivers or software installed shortly before the failure. If available, preserve setupact.log and setuperr.log. A generic error code alone may not identify whether the underlying issue is related to a driver, storage, servicing, or another part of setup.

These details make repeated attempts more useful: a failure at the same phase after the same recent driver or software change provides a different lead than a failure whose phase changes. Keep the exact message and update-history code with the logs rather than replacing them with a general description such as “Windows failed.” If the code is definitely 0x80004035, include that exact value when seeking help; the cited Microsoft upgrade table specifically discusses 0x80004005.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. This support status is important when deciding what to do with an older PC, but it does not by itself identify the cause of an individual setup error.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 0x80004035 the same as 0x80004005?
The code reported here is different: 0x80004035 and 0x80004005 are not identical hexadecimal values. The Microsoft shared-folder and upgrade guidance discussed above names 0x80004005, so verify the displayed digits before applying those code-specific references.
Does an unspecified error prove that my shared files are damaged?
No. The wording alone does not establish that files are corrupted. In a shared-folder case, the failure can occur before Windows gains access to the folder, so look at the connection, account, and permissions rather than inferring file damage from the message.
What should I give my IT administrator if these checks do not solve it?
Provide the exact code and message, whether you were opening a share or running Setup, the server name or share path if applicable, and the result of a direct connection test. For an upgrade failure, include the failed setup phase and the relevant setup logs if available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I enable SMB1 to fix every NAS connection error?
No. SMB1 is not installed by default and lacks modern security protections. Consider it only as a temporary compatibility measure after confirming that a trusted legacy device requires it; it will not fix a wrong path, offline server, credentials problem, or denied permissions.
Why does the share work by IP address but not by computer name?
That result points toward name resolution as an area to check. An IP address can change on a network using DHCP, so use the network administrator’s guidance to repair name resolution or reserve an address rather than treating a temporary IP path as a permanent fix.
What can Network reset change?
It removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters after restart. VPN clients or Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be configured again, so use it only after targeted checks and record relevant settings first.
Does a USB-to-Ethernet adapter fix the error?
Not by itself. It can help compare a wired path with Wi-Fi or a built-in adapter during diagnosis, but it cannot correct permissions, guest-access policy, disabled sharing services, or an offline NAS.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do if the code definitely says 0x80004035?
Keep the exact code and the app or task that displayed it, then consult that application’s documentation or support information. The Microsoft shared-folder and Windows-upgrade guidance described here identifies 0x80004005, not 0x80004035.
The Bottom Line
Confirm the exact digits and identify whether the failure is a shared-folder connection or a Windows upgrade before changing settings. For a share, check network access, discovery, direct connection, credentials, and both permission layers before considering SMB1 or a network reset. For Setup, use the upgrade-specific steps and record the failure details.
