Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run. If Windows offers the automated Windows Update troubleshooter through Get Help, follow its prompts.
- Apply any suggested change, restart the PC, and return to Settings > Windows Update to check for updates again.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter and follow the prompts.
- Restart the PC, then open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check again.
If the troubleshooter reports that it made a change, the restart matters: retrying before restarting may not show whether that change resolved the problem.
How do I repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC?
If the troubleshooter does not resolve the failure, run Microsoft’s documented image-repair command first, followed by the System File Checker command. These checks address possible component-store or system-file corruption; their use does not prove corruption was the cause of 0x80003301.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealthand press Enter. Let the operation finish before starting the next command. - Enter
Sfc.exe /Scannowand press Enter. Wait for the scan to complete; do not close the window while it is running. - Restart Windows, then try Windows Update again.
Run the commands in that order. DISM repairs the Windows image used by system-file repair, while SFC checks protected system files. If a command reports that it could not complete, record the full message rather than repeatedly running commands without noting the result.
How do I reset the Windows Update cache and check the clock?
If the update still fails, Microsoft’s cache-reset guidance is to stop the Windows Update service, remove the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, and start the service again. Also verify that Windows has the correct date and time and that its clock is synchronized.

- Open the Services app: press Windows + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update in the service list. Right-click it and choose Stop.
- In File Explorer, open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Delete the folder’s contents—not the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, check that the Windows Update service has stopped before continuing. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart the PC, then check for updates again.
Deleting this cache clears downloaded update files; it is not a way to identify what caused this particular error. If you cannot stop the service or remove a file, do not force-delete protected files—record the message and move on to support or the remaining checks.
Verify date, time, and synchronization
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Check that the date, time, and time zone are correct. Turn on automatic time setting if appropriate for your location.
- Use the available clock-sync option, then retry Windows Update.
What should I check if the error happens during a Windows upgrade?
An upgrade can be affected by connected devices, incompatible drivers or software, and disk errors. If 0x80003301 appears during an upgrade or installation rather than an ordinary update, check these items as well.

Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down the PC and unplug nonessential external devices such as removable storage, printers, docks, and other peripherals. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and anything needed to operate the computer connected. Retry the upgrade; reconnect devices afterward, one at a time.
Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look for devices with warning icons and expand the relevant categories to identify them.
- Record the device name and any displayed error before making changes. If you can identify a driver problem, use the device maker’s official support route for the appropriate driver rather than guessing at a replacement.
A warning icon is a reason to investigate that device, not proof it caused the failed upgrade. Avoid uninstalling multiple drivers at once because that makes it harder to identify which change affected the result.

Consider third-party security software
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance includes removing incompatible third-party security software when appropriate. Do not leave a PC without protection casually: first confirm that the software is actually incompatible or implicated in the upgrade failure, follow its vendor’s uninstall instructions, and reinstall or replace it after the upgrade if needed.
Check the system drive for errors
From an elevated Command Prompt, run chkdsk /f C:. If Windows says the drive is in use and asks to schedule the check for the next restart, confirm the schedule and restart the PC. The check can take time; allow it to finish before interrupting or powering off the computer.

Does Windows 10’s support status change what I should do?
Yes. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025; Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided for Windows 10.
