Error 0x80000102 does not have a dedicated definition in the Microsoft guidance reviewed for this article, so the code alone does not identify a cause or a single fix. Note where it appears and what Windows was doing, then work through the low-risk steps first: restart, disconnect nonessential peripherals, run the Windows Update troubleshooter if the error is update-related, and install current updates and drivers. Use repair commands or recovery options only if the problem persists and the symptoms point to them.
What does error 0x80000102 mean?
The code is not enough to tell you exactly what failed. It may appear during Windows Update, Windows setup, an application, startup, or a device operation; each context points to a different troubleshooting path. Microsoft’s reviewed guidance does not provide a dedicated definition for this exact code.

A third-party exact-code listing associates it with possibilities such as incorrectly configured settings, invalid system entries, a failed installation, an improper shutdown, an interrupted update or task, or missing or damaged system files. These are broad possibilities, not a confirmed diagnosis for every PC. Do not assume that a particular file, driver, or Windows component is responsible until the surrounding message and symptoms support that conclusion.
Record the context before changing anything
- Write down the full message, including any text before or after
0x80000102. - Note whether it appears in Windows Update, during an upgrade or installation, when opening a particular application, at startup, or while using a device.
- Record what changed just before it began: an update, new software, a driver change, a shutdown, or a connected peripheral.
- If the error appears only once and Windows otherwise works normally, restart and retry the original task once before attempting deeper repairs.
What should I do first?
Start with reversible checks that do not alter Windows files. Restart the PC, remove nonessential connected hardware, and retry the task; if the error is tied to Windows Update, run its built-in troubleshooter next.

- Restart Windows. Save open work, choose Start > Power > Restart, then repeat the action that produced the error once.
- Disconnect nonessential devices. Unplug USB drives, printers, docks, external storage, and other peripherals not needed to start the PC. Keep essential input devices connected. Retry the task; if the problem disappears, reconnect devices one at a time to identify whether a particular device or connection is involved.
- Check that the PC has room to work. Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10, and check available space on the Windows drive. If it is nearly full, make room using Windows Storage settings or by moving personal files to storage you trust. Do not delete unfamiliar system files to make space.
- Retry only the affected action. If the error occurred during an update, retry Windows Update; if it occurred when launching one application, test that application. This helps establish whether the failure is persistent and limited to one task.
How do I fix 0x80000102 if it appears in Windows Update?
Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check for updates again. The exact path differs between Windows 11 and Windows 10.
Run the troubleshooter
- Windows 11: Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Follow the prompts and apply any changes the troubleshooter recommends. Restart Windows, then open Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10 and select Check for updates.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not fix the issue, note its result rather than repeatedly running it. Check Windows Update history for the failed update and any displayed error details; these may help distinguish an update-specific problem from a broader Windows issue.
What if the error started during a Windows upgrade or installation?
For an upgrade problem, reduce interference before trying again: disconnect nonessential hardware, install available Windows and driver updates, check Device Manager, and consider a clean boot. Microsoft also recommends removing third-party antivirus temporarily when appropriate for upgrade troubleshooting; do this only if you understand how to restore your normal protection afterward.

Check devices and updates
- Disconnect the nonessential devices described above before restarting setup.
- Install available Windows updates, restart, and check again for updates.
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager. Look for yellow warning icons. Open an affected device’s properties and read the status on the General tab before deciding what to do; a warning is a clue, not proof that the device caused this code.
- Use Windows Update or the device maker’s support channel for current drivers. Avoid changing several drivers at once, so you can tell whether a change affects the problem.
Use a clean boot to check for background interference
A clean boot starts Windows with a limited set of startup services and apps. It can help identify interference, but it does not repair system files and it is not a normal startup setting to leave in place.
- Sign in with an account that has administrator rights. Search Windows for System Configuration and open it.
- On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services before selecting Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first matters: do not disable them as part of this test.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled startup items there, note what you changed, then close Task Manager.
- In System Configuration, select OK and restart. Retry the failed upgrade or task.
- If the error no longer appears, a disabled background item may be involved. Restore startup items and services in groups, restarting and testing between groups, to narrow it down. To return to normal startup, open System Configuration, choose General > Normal startup, re-enable startup items as appropriate in Task Manager, and restart.
If the error persists in a clean boot, return to normal startup and continue with the next checks. A clean boot is a way to isolate interference, not evidence by itself that a particular app is defective.
Should I run DISM and System File Checker?
Use DISM and System File Checker if the error persists and there is reason to suspect damaged Windows components or system files, such as repeated update failures or related Windows errors. They are built-in repair tools, but their commands need an elevated Command Prompt and do not guarantee that this particular code will be resolved.

sfc /scannowand press Enter. Wait for verification to finish and read the final message. - Restart the PC, then retry the action that produced the error. If either command reports that it could not complete a repair, keep the exact result for further diagnosis rather than repeating the commands without a reason.
What should I check if the error keeps returning?
Use the history and logs to find out which operation is failing, then check the conditions Microsoft identifies for persistent crashes and update problems: available disk space, current updates and firmware, and relevant memory or hardware tests. Do not treat an event recorded at the same time as the error as proof of cause; look for entries that identify a failing component or operation.
Review update history and Event Viewer
- Open Windows Update settings and review Update history for the update that failed. Record its name and any displayed error text.
- Search for and open Event Viewer. Check the Windows logs around the time the error occurred and note relevant error entries and their source. A large number of unrelated warnings is common; focus on entries that match the time and action.
- If setup or an upgrade failed, preserve any displayed setup error and the related setup logs for a technician or later diagnosis. The code by itself does not establish which log or component is responsible.
Check firmware, memory, and hardware when symptoms fit
- Install current cumulative Windows updates and relevant firmware through the PC or hardware manufacturer’s supported process. Firmware updates are model-specific; confirm the exact device model and follow its instructions rather than applying a package intended for similar hardware.
- If Windows crashes, freezes, or shows other stop-code-like symptoms, run the relevant Windows or device-maker memory and hardware diagnostics. A failure in a test is useful evidence; a clean result does not rule out every intermittent hardware fault.
- If the issue happens only with a particular peripheral, test its connection and check Device Manager for its status. If it happens only in one application, capture the application name and timing for application-specific troubleshooting.
When should I use System Restore or another recovery option?
Consider recovery only after simpler troubleshooting fails, especially if the error began after a recent change and Windows cannot be returned to a stable state through ordinary updates and repairs. Back up important files first: recovery actions can change installed apps, settings, or data, depending on the option chosen.
- Copy important personal files to a separate location and confirm that the backup is accessible.
- Search Windows for Create a restore point and open System Properties. If a suitable restore point exists, select System Restore and review the affected programs and date before confirming.
- If Windows will not start normally, use Windows recovery options available for the device and choose the least disruptive option that addresses the failure. Read the on-screen description carefully before proceeding.
- After recovery, check whether the original error is gone before reinstalling software or reconnecting all peripherals.
Which repair option should I choose?
Use built-in Windows steps first when the problem is update-related or you can identify the failing operation. A third-party repair utility is a separate, optional route; it does not replace diagnosis, backups, or careful review of proposed changes.

If you use the optional third-party route, Outbyte PC Repair is one option to consider after the manual checks: it can address some common Windows issues where possible and lets you review detected findings before choosing repairs. It offers a free trial of at least two days by category, followed by a paid subscription; results vary, and it does not replace antivirus protection or guarantee a fix for every crash.
Does Windows 10 support status change what I should do?
Yes, it matters for ongoing maintenance. Microsoft ended free support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025, so in 2026 a Windows 10 PC should not be assumed to receive the same free support and update coverage as a supported Windows release. The immediate troubleshooting steps above still help investigate this error, but plan for the PC’s longer-term security and support needs as a separate decision.
What should I do after the error is fixed?
Retry the task that originally failed and confirm it completes; then keep a short record of the error context, the change that resolved it, and any updates or drivers installed. If it returns, that record helps distinguish a repeatable update or application failure from an intermittent device or hardware issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can error 0x80000102 damage my files?
The code alone does not establish that files are damaged or at risk. If Windows is still starting and your files open normally, make a current backup before trying recovery steps that can change the system.
Best Value
Could 0x80000102 mean my PC has malware?
This error code is not, by itself, evidence of malware. Use your normal security software if you have separate signs of a security problem, but troubleshoot this code according to the task and message that accompanied it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I reinstall Windows to fix 0x80000102?
A reinstall is not the first response to an undefined error code. Consider it only after less disruptive repair and recovery options have failed, and after backing up files and confirming you can restore anything you need.
What information should I give a repair technician about this error?
Share the exact message, where and when it appears, what changed beforehand, the failed update or application name, and any relevant Event Viewer or setup-log entries. Also describe which troubleshooting steps you tried and what each reported.
