- Disconnect nonessential external hardware. Shut down the computer, unplug external storage, printers, cameras, docks, card readers, and other USB accessories that are not required for the upgrade. Leave only the input devices and network connection you need. Do not disconnect a device that supplies power or is required to keep the system running.
- Install important Windows updates before retrying. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update; in Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install important updates offered for the current system, and restart when prompted. Microsoft describes this as general upgrade preparation in its upgrade and installation guidance.
- Retry once with the same conditions. Use the same installer and account, with nonessential hardware still disconnected. If the code returns, record whether it appears at the same stage; do not repeatedly restart an installer that is visibly making progress.
- Check the update branch separately. If the message actually appears in Windows Update rather than during a feature upgrade, read Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance. That page covers common update failures, but it does not identify 0x030D2844.
If setup fails again, preserve the exact wording and stage instead of jumping to a reset or clean installation. - Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the warning icon. Record the exact device name, category, and any hardware or instance identifier visible in Properties.
- Open the device’s Properties window and copy the text on the General tab, including the full status message and code. Note the Driver tab’s provider and version without removing or replacing the driver yet.
- Check whether the device is built into the computer or connected externally. For an external device, note its connection type and whether the error follows the device to another port.
- Contact the device manufacturer with the copied message, Windows edition and build, device model, and the steps that reproduce the problem. If the vendor cannot explain an unlisted code, provide the same evidence to Microsoft Support.
Do not infer that a driver is defective merely because Device Manager displays a hexadecimal value. Without documentation for this exact code, uninstalling a driver, forcing an unrelated package, or editing the registry can remove a working recovery path and is not an evidence-based fix.
How do I troubleshoot the code in a third-party application?

- Preserve application logs. If the program offers an export or “send diagnostics” function, save the resulting file and note its timestamp. Do not publish logs that contain passwords, access tokens, personal documents, or customer data.
- Test only a documented update or repair. Apply an update or repair procedure when the application vendor documents it for your version. If the vendor has no guidance for this code, send the evidence package rather than trying random compatibility settings or registry changes.
If the application works after a restart but fails again during the same operation, record both outcomes. That pattern can be more useful to the vendor than a one-time screenshot because it shows whether the trigger is repeatable.

Some dialogs identify a Windows component without using Device Manager or Windows Setup. In that case, capture the window title, the full message, and the component name before dismissing it. Use the component named in the dialog as the first support destination.
