Error 0x012D9313 does not have a confirmed public definition in the Microsoft references available for this guide, so the code alone cannot tell you what failed. The right fix depends on where it appeared—such as Windows Update, Device Manager, an app, or a crash screen. First save the full message and its context; then use the matching troubleshooting path below, starting with reversible steps and leaving recovery options until last.
What is error 0x012D9313?
It is an error code whose meaning is not confirmed in the Microsoft references consulted for this guide. There is no established basis for calling it a particular Windows component, a specific driver fault, or a message with one universal fix. Treat it as a clue that needs the surrounding text and location to make sense.

That uncertainty matters: a code shown during Windows Setup may call for a different investigation from the same code shown in Device Manager or immediately before a restart. Microsoft also notes that its Device Manager error-code reference does not include every code generated by Device Manager. For an unlisted code, Microsoft directs users to the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support.
Record the details before changing anything
- Take a screenshot or photo of the entire error, including any title, explanatory text, and buttons.
- Write down where it appeared: Windows Update, Windows Setup, Device Manager, an application, Event Viewer, or a blue/black crash screen.
- Record the date and time, what you were doing, whether the PC restarted, and what changed recently—such as an update, driver, device, or application.
- Copy any adjacent error code, event source, event ID, or log entry. Do not rely on 0x012D9313 by itself.
Which fix should I try for my error?
Choose a branch based on where the message appeared and what the PC is doing. If you are unsure, begin with the shared low-risk checks, then follow the closest matching branch.

| Where it appeared | First checks | Access needed | Risk and reversibility | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update or Setup | Install available updates, disconnect nonessential devices, check Device Manager, and review disk and system integrity. | Usually normal Windows access. | These checks are generally reversible; disconnecting devices does not alter their data. | Update history, complete message, setup or event logs, and device changes. |
| Device Manager | Inspect the affected device and its driver; update or roll back if appropriate. | Normal Windows access if the device is available. | Driver changes can affect device operation; a rollback is reversible when available. | Device name, Properties details, driver version, and recent driver changes. |
| Crash screen or restart loop | Remove recently added hardware, use Safe Mode if needed, and check drivers, free space, updates, and system integrity. | Normal boot or Windows recovery access for Safe Mode. | Initial checks are low risk; recovery operations may affect data or settings. | Crash details, timestamps, Event Viewer entries, driver state, and test results. |
| Application dialog | Capture the exact application message and check whether Windows or the device also shows an error. | Normal Windows access. | Collecting details is low risk; avoid broad system changes until the failing application or component is clearer. | Application name, full dialog, time, and related Windows events. |
What should I do first on either Windows 11 or Windows 10?
Start with actions that preserve evidence and do not make major changes. Microsoft’s general upgrade and installation guidance includes installing important updates, checking Device Manager, disconnecting external hardware, and checking system or disk problems.
- Save the error details. Capture the complete message and note what preceded it. If Windows is still usable, open Event Viewer and inspect entries at the error time; record the event source, event ID, and nearby entries rather than copying only the code.
- Install pending Windows updates. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates, restart if asked, and note whether the original problem returns.
- Disconnect nonessential hardware. Shut down if practical, then disconnect external drives, docks, printers, scanners, and recently added peripherals. Leave only what is needed to operate the computer. Retry the failed update or setup once; if the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time to identify a possible trigger.
- Check available disk space. Open Settings > System > Storage and review the system drive. Microsoft Learn recommends keeping approximately 10–15% of disk space free when troubleshooting stop errors. This is a troubleshooting recommendation, not a guarantee that free space will fix this code.
- Review Device Manager. Right-click Start and select Device Manager. Look for a device with a yellow warning icon. Expand the relevant category, open the device’s Properties, and record its name, status, and driver details before changing anything.
How do I fix it if it appears during Windows Update or Setup?
For an update or installation failure, rule out common sources of interference before attempting a reset or reinstall. The error’s appearance during an update does not by itself prove that the update caused it.

Disconnect nonessential USB devices and other external hardware, including storage drives, docks, printers, and scanners. Restart and retry the same update or setup action. If it works, reconnect devices individually and check whether the error returns; that gives you a more useful lead than changing several drivers at once.
Check drivers and disk integrity
In Device Manager, inspect devices showing a warning. If a device or driver was recently changed, use its Properties dialog to update the driver or, where available, roll it back. Do not uninstall or disable unrelated devices as a general experiment. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance also includes hard-drive error checks and Windows system-file repair with SFC or DISM.

To run the system-file checks from Windows, open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), approve the User Account Control prompt, and run these commands one at a time:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Let each scan finish; do not close the window while it is working. Restart Windows if repairs are reported, then retry the update. If a command reports that it could not complete repairs, save the exact output rather than repeating commands blindly. For disk problems, use the Windows drive error-checking option or follow Microsoft’s applicable disk-check instructions; first back up important files if the drive may be failing.

Consider security software only as a controlled diagnostic
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance lists third-party security software as a possible source of interference in some upgrade problems. Do not leave protection disabled. If you have a specific reason to test this possibility, follow the security product maker’s temporary-removal and reinstall instructions, make sure Windows Defender is active, and restore your protection promptly. If you cannot confirm how to restore it, skip this test and contact the software provider.
What if Device Manager shows the code?
Use the affected device’s Properties and driver history to decide whether a driver change is relevant. Since Microsoft’s Device Manager reference does not list every code, an absent entry does not identify the cause or rule out a device issue.

- Open Device Manager from the Start menu or by right-clicking Start.
- Find the device with the warning icon, expand its category, and open Properties. Record the device name and the message on the General tab; check the Driver tab for the provider, date, and version.
- If the problem began after a driver update, select Roll Back Driver if Windows makes that option available, then restart and test the device.
- If the driver is simply outdated or the device has stopped working, use Update driver or obtain the appropriate driver through the device maker’s support channel. Record the current and replacement versions.
- Use disable or uninstall only when you understand which device is affected and can restore it. Disabling a device can remove a needed function, and uninstalling a driver can make recovery harder if you do not have a suitable replacement.
If the code remains unlisted or the device still fails, give the device maker or Microsoft Support the complete error text, device model, Windows edition and build, driver version, and the time the problem began. That is more actionable than reporting the code alone.
How do I troubleshoot a crash, blue screen, black screen, or restart loop?
If the code accompanies a system crash or repeated restarts, stabilize Windows before running deeper checks. Microsoft recommends Safe Mode when ordinary startup is unstable, followed by driver and update checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse Safe Mode when normal startup is unreliable
If you can reach the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. In the recovery menu, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose the Safe Mode option shown on screen. If Windows will not reach sign-in, use Windows Recovery Environment if it is available; do not interrupt the PC repeatedly without noting what recovery options appear.
In Safe Mode, check Device Manager for recently changed drivers and uninstall a recent update only if the timing and symptoms point to it. Also check available storage and install pending updates once Windows can start normally again. Safe Mode limits what loads, so a device or application not behaving normally there is not, by itself, proof that it is defective.

Check logs and hardware methodically
When Windows is stable enough, use Event Viewer to inspect entries around the crash time and note the source, event ID, and neighboring messages. Microsoft Learn’s stop-error guidance also recommends current BIOS or firmware, hardware and memory tests, and malware scanning as diagnostic checks. Follow the PC or component maker’s instructions for firmware and tests; firmware changes carry more risk than reviewing logs or checking drivers, so do not start there without a specific reason.
If a memory or hardware test reports a problem, save the result and contact the PC or component maker before replacing parts. If the issue began after new hardware was installed, remove it when safe to do so and see whether the crash stops. Keep approximately 10–15% free disk space as Microsoft Learn recommends for stop-error troubleshooting.
Can I fix it without resetting Windows?
Usually, you should try the less disruptive checks first: preserve the message, install updates, disconnect peripherals, inspect drivers, and check disk and system integrity. A reset is not a code-specific remedy, and the code does not establish that Windows must be reinstalled.
If the problem persists after targeted checks, consider System Restore or another recovery option only after backing up important files. Microsoft’s recovery guidance warns that some options can cause data loss. Review the description of the specific recovery choice presented on your PC, confirm your backup can be accessed, and do not proceed if you are unsure what will be removed.
Best Value
| Option | When it may fit | Reversibility and data risk | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Updates, peripheral removal, driver inspection, disk and system checks | First-line diagnosis for update, device, or stability issues. | Usually the least disruptive; driver changes can affect a device. | Update result, driver details, scan output, and error timestamps. |
| Safe Mode | Normal startup is unstable or a restart loop prevents ordinary checks. | A diagnostic startup mode; it does not itself repair the underlying issue. | Whether Windows starts and which symptoms remain. |
| System Restore or another recovery operation | Less disruptive checks failed and there is a plausible recovery point or recovery plan. | Some recovery choices can remove files, apps, or settings; back up first. | Backup status, selected recovery option, and the point in time involved. |
What should I send to Microsoft Support or the device maker?
Escalate with a concise evidence bundle so support can distinguish a Windows, driver, device, or application problem. If the code is unlisted in Microsoft’s Device Manager reference, Microsoft points users to the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support.
- The full error text and a screenshot, plus the location where it appeared.
- Date and time, what action triggered it, whether the PC restarted, and any changes immediately before it began.
- Windows edition and build, the PC or device model, and relevant driver versions.
- Event Viewer source, event ID, timestamp, and surrounding entries; for Setup or update failures, include the relevant log details you can access.
- Steps already tried and their results, including whether Safe Mode started and whether disk, system-file, memory, or hardware checks reported anything.
Keep the original wording intact when you share it. Do not replace the unrecognized code with a guessed explanation or remove nearby codes that may be more diagnostic.

Does Windows 10 still receive support?
As of October 25, 2026, Microsoft’s stated end date for Windows 10 support has passed: support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after that date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A Windows 10 PC can continue to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11; check Microsoft’s current guidance for any program-specific or regional options that may apply.
If you want an optional automated aid after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues where possible, clean temporary and cache files, adjust settings, and provide an app-crash log; it does not repair every crash, results vary, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category lasting at least two days followed by a paid subscription.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is error 0x012D9313 a virus?
The code alone does not establish malware or any other specific cause. A security scan can be one diagnostic check when symptoms warrant it, but this error number is not proof that a PC is infected.
Can I search the code in Event Viewer?
Yes. In Event Viewer, inspect entries at the time the message appeared and use the source, event ID, and neighboring entries to identify related activity. The code may not appear as a searchable event identifier, so use the timestamp and full message as well.
Should I replace a device if Device Manager shows this code?
Not on the code alone. First identify the device and driver, check whether the problem followed a driver change, and use an appropriate hardware test or the device maker’s diagnosis before deciding that replacement is necessary.
