Error 0x00A0B677 has no verified Microsoft meaning or code-specific repair in the available documentation. Treat it as a clue, not a diagnosis: the correct troubleshooting path depends on whether it appears during startup, on a blue or black stop-error screen, in Windows Update, or inside an application. Record the complete message and what happened immediately before it, then follow the symptom-specific steps below. Microsoft’s general guidance can help with the surrounding failure, but it does not establish that any particular step fixes this exact code.
What is error 0x00A0B677?
The hexadecimal value 0x00A0B677 is not identified in the Microsoft material available for Windows 10 or Windows 11. A Microsoft system-error reference explains that numeric codes can occur in different contexts and need to be investigated alongside the component and event that produced them: Microsoft’s system-error-code documentation. No authoritative source ties this value to a particular driver, Windows service, update, hardware device, or malware condition.

- What was on screen? Was it a blue stop-error screen, a black startup screen, a Windows Update message, a dialog from an application, or a notification after you reached the desktop?
- When did it appear? Note whether it happened immediately after pressing the power button, while the Windows logo or spinning indicator was visible, at sign-in, after sign-in, or during a restart.
- What were you doing immediately beforehand? Record the update, application, file, peripheral, driver change, or setting change that preceded it.
- Can the computer reach the desktop? A system that still starts gives you diagnostic and backup options that are unavailable during a boot failure.
- Does it recur? Record whether the event is one-time, occurs on every boot, follows a particular device connection, or appears only when one application is open.
Take a photograph or screenshot if possible, including the full sentence, any stop-code name, an update identifier, and the time. Preserve the spelling and leading zeros in 0x00A0B677; a single mistyped character can send you to instructions for a different condition.
What should you do before trying a repair?
These preparation steps prevent a symptom from being confused with its cause and make recovery safer.
- Back up accessible files. If Windows reaches the desktop, copy important documents to another disk or a trusted cloud location before attempting recovery. If it does not start, avoid repeated forced shutdowns until you have chosen a recovery route.
- Write down recent changes. Include newly installed hardware, a peripheral, a driver, an application, a Windows update, or a configuration change. Microsoft’s stop-error guidance specifically asks you to consider recently added hardware.
- Check whether the problem is isolated. If only one application produces the dialog, record its name and action. If every boot fails or the machine restarts, use the startup or stop-error path instead.
- Keep the evidence together. Save the screenshot, full text, approximate time, Windows version (10 or 11), and whether the system was on battery or AC power. These details let a technician correlate the event with logs without guessing.
Which troubleshooting path matches the symptom?
Choose the row that matches what you saw. These are general Microsoft procedures for the surrounding symptom, not confirmed remedies for 0x00A0B677.
| Where the code appears | Start with | Relevant Microsoft guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Blue or black stop-error screen, followed by a restart | Remove recently added hardware, try Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, check free disk space and install current updates | Unexpected restarts and stop-code troubleshooting |
| Windows cannot complete startup | Identify the startup phase, then use Safe Mode, Event Viewer, a clean start, or a recovery option as appropriate | Advanced troubleshooting for Windows startup issues |
| Windows Update displays the value | Verify the exact code and update context before applying any remedy | Troubleshoot problems updating Windows |
| A desktop application displays a dialog | Capture the application name, action and complete text; investigate the application context rather than assuming a Windows stop error | The available Microsoft pages do not map this value to an application component |
How do I troubleshoot a blue screen, unexpected restart, or stop error?
If the code appears with a stop-error screen or the PC repeatedly restarts, use Microsoft’s general sequence and document what changes the behavior.
1. Disconnect recently added hardware
Power the computer down normally if possible, then remove hardware that was added shortly before the problem began. This can include an expansion device or an external peripheral. Reconnect one item at a time only after Windows is stable so you can identify a repeatable trigger. Do not remove the keyboard, pointing device, or any component needed to reach recovery menus.
2. Try Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If the machine remains stable there, the contrast is useful evidence that a recently loaded device, service, or startup item deserves attention; it is not proof that any one component caused 0x00A0B677. If Safe Mode also fails, record that result and move to recovery options rather than repeatedly restarting.

3. Inspect Device Manager
In a working Windows session, open Device Manager and look for devices marked with a warning symbol. Note the device name and status text before changing anything. A flagged device is a lead for investigation, not confirmation that it generated this code. If the issue began immediately after a device or driver change, preserve the current details for comparison.

4. Check available disk space
Confirm that the system drive has usable free space. Windows needs working space for updates, logs and recovery operations; a nearly full drive can complicate troubleshooting even when it is not the origin of the code. Record the approximate free-space amount so you can tell whether clearing space changes the symptom.
5. Install current Windows updates
When Windows can stay running, check for current updates and restart as requested. This is a general stop-error recommendation, not evidence that an update contains a fix for 0x00A0B677. If the value itself appears during an update, use the separate update procedure below and verify the code before proceeding.
6. Use System Restore or another recovery option if the problem remains
If the earlier checks do not restore stability, Microsoft lists System Restore and other recovery options as next steps. Choose a restore point or recovery action that matches the timing you recorded, and read the effect shown on screen before confirming. Recovery can remove recently installed software or settings, so use your backup and preserve the exact error text.
Microsoft’s complete sequence and safety notes are in Troubleshooting Windows unexpected restarts and stop code errors.
What if Windows fails during startup?
A startup failure is not automatically a stop error. Microsoft’s startup guidance recommends identifying the phase that fails before selecting a repair: Advanced troubleshooting for Windows startup issues.
Identify the failing phase
- Before the Windows logo: note whether the machine powers on and whether firmware displays a message. This separates a power or firmware event from a Windows loading problem.
- At the Windows logo or spinning indicator: record whether the indicator freezes, loops, or changes to the code. This is the phase in which Safe Mode and Windows recovery are most relevant.
- At sign-in: note whether entering credentials triggers the failure. A successful sign-in followed by a crash points to a different set of startup items than a machine that never reaches the sign-in screen.
- Immediately after sign-in: record which desktop items load and whether the failure occurs only after a particular application starts.
Use Safe Mode as a diagnostic comparison
Enter Windows recovery and select Safe Mode using the options presented by your installation. The purpose is to determine whether the failure depends on a normal driver or startup service. If Safe Mode works, keep the session focused on collecting evidence and testing one change at a time; do not assume that Safe Mode itself repaired the underlying issue.
Review Event Viewer
When you can reach Windows, open Event Viewer and examine entries around the recorded failure time. Compare the timestamp, source and event text with the full 0x00A0B677 message. Event Viewer can reveal which component reported an event, but an event near the error is not automatically the cause; save the relevant text before clearing or filtering logs.

Try a clean start when normal startup is the trigger
Microsoft includes a clean start among its diagnostic approaches. Use it to load Windows with nonessential startup software and services reduced, then test whether the code returns. If the problem disappears, re-enable items in small groups until the triggering category is narrowed; if it remains, restore the normal configuration and continue with recovery rather than deleting system files.
Use recovery options when the desktop is unavailable
If the system cannot reach the desktop, use the Windows recovery environment and choose the least destructive option that addresses the identified phase. System Restore is one option Microsoft lists for unresolved startup and stop-error problems. If a selected recovery route requests installation or recovery media, an ordinary USB flash drive can serve as that general-purpose media; the drive itself does not explain or fix this code.
What if 0x00A0B677 appears during Windows Update?
First verify that the value is exactly 0x00A0B677 and record the update name or identifier, the point at which the process failed, and whether Windows rolled back. The Microsoft update page contains instructions for several specifically named error codes, but it does not identify this one: Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.
Do not transfer a remedy written for another code merely because the numbers look similar. A fix for a named update error may change files or services that are unrelated to your event. Instead, preserve the update history and full message, confirm whether the machine can start normally, and then use the update guidance that matches the actual failure state. If the PC begins restarting or shows a stop screen during the process, switch to the unexpected-restart path rather than treating it as an ordinary update dialog.
What if an application shows the code after I reach the desktop?
The available evidence does not identify 0x00A0B677 as an application error or connect it to a particular executable or DLL. Record the application’s exact name and version if shown, the file or action that triggered the dialog, and whether closing that application leaves Windows usable.
If the dialog occurs only in one program, keep the investigation scoped to that program until evidence points elsewhere. Capture its complete error text and consult the application’s own support material using the exact wording. If several unrelated applications produce the same value, or if Windows also restarts, freezes, or fails to boot, reclassify the event as a broader Windows symptom and follow the corresponding path above.
What should you avoid while investigating?
- Do not treat the number as a diagnosis. There is no verified component mapping for this value, so a confident claim about a specific driver, registry key or service would be speculation.
- Do not reuse another code’s update instructions. Microsoft’s update remedies are tied to the codes they name; similarity in formatting is not evidence of equivalence.
- Do not delete system files or edit the registry as a first response. Such changes can remove recovery options and make the original evidence harder to interpret.
- Do not assume malware from the hexadecimal format. The code alone provides no evidence of malicious software. Use your normal security practices, but keep malware claims separate from this unclassified event.
- Do not repeatedly force power-offs without recording results. Note each restart, screen and successful mode so that a changing symptom does not get mistaken for a single failure.
When should you escalate the problem?
Seek help from the device manufacturer, your organization’s administrator, or Microsoft support when the machine cannot remain running long enough to back up data, the failure persists in Safe Mode, recovery options fail, or a hardware change clearly precedes the event. Provide the full message, a photograph, Windows 10 or 11 version, startup phase, recent changes, Device Manager observations, available disk space, and the relevant Event Viewer text. Those details are more actionable than the code by itself.

If you can still use Windows, keep the system in the most stable state you found and avoid introducing several changes at once. If recovery media is required, create or obtain it through the official Windows recovery process and label it for the affected computer. The objective is to preserve access to your files while the actual source of the message is identified.

FAQs
Is 0x00A0B677 a Windows 10-only or Windows 11-only error?
There is no evidence assigning the value to either release. The same unverified number could be displayed by different components or applications, so the operating-system version alone does not identify its cause.
Does this code prove that a device or driver is defective?
No. A newly added device is worth checking only when the timing supports that connection, and a warning in Device Manager is a lead rather than proof. The code has not been mapped to a hardware component.
What information should I send when asking for support?
Send the exact text around the code, a screenshot, Windows 10 or 11 version, the screen or application where it appeared, the action immediately beforehand, recent hardware or software changes, and whether Safe Mode or the desktop works. Include timestamps and relevant Event Viewer entries when available.
