Error 0x009AE3B2 is not mapped to a documented Windows 10 or Windows 11 component in Microsoft’s published error information. When it appears in a browser window with a phone number, payment demand, fake scan, or request for remote access, treat it as a technical-support scam—not as a Windows lockout. Do not call, pay, click the warning’s buttons, or let anyone control the PC. Close the browser, remove the site permission or extension that brought the page back, and run Microsoft security scans. If the code appears outside the browser or survives a restart, use the separate diagnostic path below because the number alone cannot identify the cause.
What does error 0x009AE3B2 mean?
There is no authoritative Microsoft mapping for 0x009AE3B2 to a Windows service, component, or documented Windows 10/11 fault. The context in which you see it matters more than the hexadecimal number. A full-screen page in Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or another browser can display any text it wants, including a made-up error code that looks official.

Microsoft’s support guidance says, “Genuine Microsoft error messages never include a phone number to call.” It also says, “Microsoft will never proactively reach out to you to provide unsolicited PC or technical support.” A warning that combines the code with a phone number, an urgent countdown, a payment request, or instructions to install remote-control software matches the pattern of a technical-support scam.
Microsoft Security Intelligence describes Rogue:JS/FakeAlert as a webpage that displays a fake security scanner and makes false infection claims. Such a page can return after you close it because of a notification permission, cached script, malicious extension, or unwanted program; the code itself does not prove that Windows is damaged.

How can I tell whether 0x009AE3B2 is a scam?
Use the surface of the alert and what it asks you to do as the first diagnostic test. The following combinations determine how far your cleanup must go.
| Where the alert appears | Phone number or remote-access demand | What it indicates | First response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inside a browser tab or pop-up | Present | Technical-support scam signal | Do not call, pay, click, or share access; end the browser task |
| Inside a browser tab or pop-up | Absent | Potentially deceptive advertisement, notification, or script | Close the tab and remove unfamiliar site permissions and extensions |
| Windows desktop, sign-in screen, or an app outside the browser | Present or absent | Requires a separate malware or software investigation | Record exactly when it appears and scan Windows before assuming the code identifies the cause |
| After a download or installation | Present or absent | Possible unwanted or malicious software | Disconnect if necessary, uninstall the requested software, and run deeper scans |
| After credentials or payment details were shared | Usually present | Account or financial-fraud exposure | Use another device to secure accounts and contact the financial institution |
What should I do immediately?
Take these steps before trying to “activate,” “unlock,” or repair anything shown by the warning.
- Do not interact with the page. Do not call its number, enter a password or card number, download a tool, click a support button, or grant remote access. A real Windows error does not require a telephone operator to clear it.
- Try to close the tab. Use the browser’s close button or press
Alt+F4. Do not click buttons inside the page that claim to close the warning. - End a stuck browser process. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. On the Processes tab, select the affected browser, such as Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, and choose End task. If several browser processes are listed, end the group for that browser. - Do not restore the previous session. Reopen the browser only after the process has ended. If it asks whether to restore previous pages, choose the option that starts a new session. Restoring the old pages can reload the scam automatically.
- Disconnect only when needed. If someone is connected remotely, or a download is actively running, turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet. If the page is merely open and no remote session exists, you can leave the connection on while removing browser permissions.
How do I stop the 0x009AE3B2 pop-up from returning?
Once the page is closed, remove the mechanisms that can reopen it. Work through browser data, site permissions, extensions, and recently installed software rather than deleting random Windows files.
Clear browsing data
In Edge, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data. Choose a time range that includes the first appearance, select cached files and cookies, and clear the data. In Chrome, use Settings > Privacy and security > Delete browsing data and clear cached files and cookies for the relevant period. Clearing cookies can sign you out of websites, so keep your normal sign-in and recovery methods available.

Remove deceptive notification permissions
In Edge, go to Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Notifications. In Chrome, use Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications. Remove or block domains you do not recognize, especially ones that were allowed shortly before the alerts began. Also check each browser’s Pop-ups and redirects permission and remove unfamiliar entries. A site notification can appear on the desktop even when the original tab is closed.
Review extensions
Open the browser’s extensions manager and disable anything you did not deliberately install or that appeared around the time of the warning. Restart the browser after disabling an extension. If the pop-up stops, remove the extension and then change passwords for accounts used while it was active, preferably from a trusted device.
Check installed applications and startup items
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. Sort by installation date and remove software you do not recognize, particularly a program installed after the warning appeared or one the caller told you to install. Then open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Startup apps (or the Startup tab in older Windows 10 builds), and disable an unfamiliar entry while you investigate it. Do not remove a driver or security component solely because its name is unfamiliar; check its publisher and installation date first.
How do I scan Windows for malware or unwanted software?
Browser cleanup removes a common trigger, but it cannot remove a program that was installed on Windows. Run the scans in this order and save your work before an offline scan.

Run a Microsoft Defender Full scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then Scan options.
- Choose Full scan and select Scan now. A full scan examines the files and running areas that a quick scan may not cover, so it can take a long time on a large drive.
- Review the result in Protection history. Quarantine or remove detections through Windows Security, and restart if it requests one.
Use Microsoft Safety Scanner when a second Microsoft scan is appropriate
Microsoft’s FakeAlert guidance also names Microsoft Safety Scanner. Download it only from Microsoft’s official site, use the current version, and run a full scan. The utility is designed as an on-demand check; it is not a replacement for your normal real-time protection, and its download expires after a limited period, so obtain a fresh copy when needed.
Run Microsoft Defender Offline if the alert returns
If the warning returns after browser cleanup, software was installed, or a remote-control session occurred, use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save documents and close applications first. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, then restarts again when the scan completes. Check Protection history after signing back in.
What if I called the number or gave the caller access?
Treat the computer and every account used on it as potentially exposed. Do not continue the conversation or allow another session.
- Disconnect the computer from the network. Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet while you inspect it.
- Record what was installed. Note the names of remote-access tools, “support” applications, browser extensions, and files the caller asked you to open. Keep screenshots or notes if they can be made safely; do not reopen the scam page to collect evidence.
- Remove remote-access software. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall the program the caller requested. If you cannot determine what changed, leave the machine disconnected and obtain help from a trusted technician.
- Change passwords from a different, trusted device. Start with email, banking, payment services, and your Microsoft account. Use unique passwords and enable multifactor authentication where available. Do not change passwords on the possibly controlled computer until it has been scanned or repaired.
- Contact your bank or card issuer immediately if payment details, card numbers, account credentials, or one-time codes were disclosed. Ask what transactions should be blocked or monitored.
- Report the incident to Microsoft through its technical-support-scam reporting channel and report financial fraud to the relevant institution or authority in your country.
What if 0x009AE3B2 still appears after I close the browser?
An alert that remains on the desktop, appears before the browser starts, or returns at every sign-in is a different branch. Do not assume the hexadecimal value identifies a Windows fault.

- Document the timing. Write down whether it appears before sign-in, immediately after sign-in, only after launching a particular application, or after connecting a device. Capture the exact wording and the window title without clicking unknown controls.
- Check installed and startup software again. Sort installed applications and startup items by date, and investigate entries added just before the problem began. Look for scheduled tasks or services associated with software you do not recognize, but do not disable essential Windows services at random.
- Run the Full and Offline scans. A persistent notification can be caused by an installed unwanted program even when the original browser data has been deleted.
- Test with a clean browser profile. Create a new profile without importing extensions. If the alert disappears there, the original profile’s permission, extension, or stored data is the likely trigger.
- Check the publisher’s documentation for a genuine application error. If the code appears in one known program, contact that program’s official support and provide the application version, Windows edition, exact text, and the event that precedes it. There is no Microsoft-wide meaning for 0x009AE3B2 to use as a shortcut.
If the machine cannot boot normally, repeatedly loses access to files, or shows signs of unauthorized account activity, stop experimenting and use a trusted, offline recovery process or professional incident-response help. Preserve important files only after scanning them and keep a separate backup that is not continuously connected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Windows 10 support status change the fix?
Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Eligible consumer Windows 10 version 22H2 devices can enroll in Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027, while supported hardware should move to Windows 11 for the longer-term security path. These dates do not make 0x009AE3B2 a genuine Windows error and do not justify calling a pop-up number. Keep Windows and browser updates current through official Settings or the browser’s own update page, and verify the exact edition and eligibility before relying on Extended Security Updates.

Frequently asked questions
Can a fake warning copy Microsoft’s logo and colors?
Yes. A webpage can reproduce logos, icons, and support language without being operated by Microsoft. Judge the behavior—especially a phone number, payment request, or remote-access demand—rather than the appearance.
Will resetting my browser remove the underlying problem?
Resetting a profile can remove permissions and extensions, but it does not uninstall a Windows program or undo account exposure. If the alert returns after a reset, inspect installed software and complete the Windows scans instead of repeatedly resetting the browser.

Could a legitimate application use 0x009AE3B2?
An individual application can define its own private error values, but that would be documented by the application’s publisher, not by Windows as a universal code. Identify the exact program and version that displays it before seeking application-specific support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I factory-reset the PC immediately?
No. A reset is a last-resort recovery option after you secure accounts, preserve needed files, and determine whether the alert is only a browser permission. If scans and a clean browser profile do not resolve a persistent desktop alert, obtain trusted technical help before choosing a reset and keep an offline backup of essential data.
