Error 0x009ADC49 is not documented in the Microsoft sources reviewed, so the hexadecimal text alone does not identify a Windows component or a real system failure. When it appears in a browser pop-up that displays a phone number, says your computer is blocked or breached, demands payment, or asks you to install remote-access software, treat it as a technical-support scam. Microsoft states that genuine Microsoft error messages never include a phone number to call. Do not call, pay, click the pop-up’s links, disclose credentials, or install anything it requests. Close the browser, end its process through Task Manager if necessary, run a full Windows Security scan, install updates, and take additional recovery steps if you interacted with the caller or installed software.
Is 0x009ADC49 a real Microsoft Windows error?
There is no authoritative Microsoft component mapping for 0x009ADC49 in the documentation reviewed. That means you should not infer that the code belongs to Windows activation, a particular DLL, a driver, or a hardware device simply because it looks like a conventional hexadecimal error.

The way the message is delivered matters more than the number. A browser page can imitate a Windows dialog, use full-screen mode, play warning sounds, and reopen alerts so that the computer appears locked. Microsoft describes unsolicited phone numbers, urgent payment demands, requests for passwords, and instructions to install remote-control software as support-scam behavior. A genuine Microsoft error message does not provide a telephone number for you to call.
How can I tell whether the 0x009ADC49 message is a scam?
Compare the message’s delivery channel and requested action with the normal Windows support paths. The following signs strongly indicate a fake web alert rather than a Windows diagnostic.

| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| A number to call displayed inside an error or security warning | Microsoft says genuine error messages never include a phone number. Treat the page as fraudulent. |
| Instructions to pay immediately, buy gift cards, or transfer money | Urgency and payment requests are support-scam tactics, not Windows repair procedures. |
| A request for your Microsoft password, card number, verification code, or remote-control permission | Do not provide the information. Microsoft does not proactively contact you with unsolicited technical support. |
| A page that claims Windows is blocked and prevents normal tab closing | A malicious or deceptive web page may be using full-screen mode or repeated pop-ups to simulate a locked computer. |
| An activation notice reached through Settings or the Windows Get Help app, without a phone number or payment demand | This may be a genuine activation issue. Use Microsoft’s built-in activation troubleshooting steps instead of downloading a fixer from the message. |
The code itself is not proof of infection, hacking, or a failing Windows component. Base your response on the message’s behavior and source, not on the intimidating appearance of the number.
What should I do first when the pop-up appears?
Stop the interaction before trying to diagnose the hexadecimal code. These steps prevent the scammer from gaining information or access while you regain control of the desktop.
1. Do not follow the instructions on the page
- Do not call the displayed number, even to ask whether it is legitimate.
- Do not click buttons or links in the alert, including “unlock,” “scan,” “renew,” or “contact support.”
- Do not type passwords, payment details, one-time codes, or personal information into the page or tell them to a caller.
- Do not install a remote-access program, browser extension, or “security” utility requested by the alert.
Do not grant a caller control of the mouse or keyboard. Microsoft says it will never proactively reach out to provide unsolicited PC or technical support.
2. Try to close the browser normally
Press Alt+F4 to close the active browser window, or use the window’s close button. If the alert is confined to one tab, close that tab without selecting any page buttons. Do not restore the previous session when reopening the browser; restoring tabs can load the same scam page again.
3. End the browser process with Task Manager if it will not close
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- On the Processes tab, select the browser that is showing the alert, such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox.
- Select End task. If more than one process for that browser is listed, end the entries associated with the open browser window.
- Reopen the browser and decline any prompt to restore the previous tabs or session.
Ending a browser process can discard unsaved work in that browser, but it prevents a page that is trapping the window from continuing to display the fake warning. If Task Manager itself does not open, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, choose Task Manager, and repeat the process-ending steps.
4. Restart Windows if the desktop still behaves abnormally
Use Start > Power > Restart. If the browser resumes the same page after restarting, end it again through Task Manager and open a new window without restoring the prior session. A restart does not by itself prove that the system is clean, so continue with the scan and update steps below.

How do I scan Windows after seeing 0x009ADC49?
Run a full scan with the built-in Windows Security app after the browser is closed. A full scan checks files and running locations more broadly than a quick scan, but a clean result does not make a phone number or payment demand legitimate.
- Open Start, type Windows Security, and launch the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan, then select Scan now.
- Leave the computer powered on while the scan runs. Review any detected items in Windows Security and follow its removal or quarantine prompts.
If the browser alert returns during or after the scan, treat that as a browser or unwanted-software problem to investigate, not as proof that the hexadecimal code identifies a specific virus. Do not install a second product because a pop-up tells you to; use a trusted source and verify the publisher independently.
How do I install the Windows updates that Microsoft recommends?
Keeping Windows current closes known security weaknesses and ensures that the built-in troubleshooting components are up to date. Use the path for your edition.
- Windows 11: open Start > Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart when prompted.
- Windows 10: open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart.
After restarting, check Windows Security again and open the browser in a fresh window. Do not use the telephone number or download link shown by the original alert as an update method.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if I already called, paid, or gave the person access?
Act as though the information and device may have been exposed. The earlier you revoke access and protect accounts, the less time an unauthorized person has to use them.
If you installed remote-control software
- Disconnect the computer from the internet temporarily by turning off Wi-Fi or unplugging the Ethernet cable if the remote session may still be active.
- From Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10, look for the program the caller asked you to install and select Uninstall. Remove only software you recognize as part of the incident; do not delete random Windows components.
- Restart the PC, run the full Windows Security scan, and install updates.
- Consider Windows recovery or a reset if the caller had meaningful control, changed settings, created accounts, or the unwanted behavior continues. Back up personal files first and make sure you have installers or recovery keys for essential applications.
A reset can remove applications and settings, and the available choices differ by Windows edition. Read the on-screen “Reset this PC” explanation before confirming whether to keep personal files or remove everything.

If you disclosed passwords or verification codes
Use a different, trusted device to change the exposed passwords, starting with your email account and Microsoft account. Sign out other sessions where the service provides that option, review recent sign-in activity, and enable multifactor authentication. Change any other account that reused the same password. Do not change passwords through a link sent by the caller or displayed in the pop-up.
If you gave payment information or sent money
Contact the bank, card issuer, or payment service immediately using the number on the card or an official statement, not a number supplied by the pop-up. Explain that the transaction followed a technical-support scam and ask what cancellation, dispute, or account-monitoring options are available. Preserve receipts, emails, chat logs, and the telephone number as evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I check whether this is a genuine Windows activation problem?
A real activation issue is handled from Windows settings or the official Get Help flow, not from a browser warning that demands a call. Microsoft’s activation guidance covers both Windows 11 and Windows 10 and provides code-specific instructions when a code is listed.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Review the activation status and select the available Troubleshoot option if Windows offers one.
- Follow the on-screen checks. If the reported code is not listed in Microsoft’s activation guidance, use the official Microsoft support or Get Help route rather than a number in a pop-up.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot when it is available and complete the guided checks.
- For a code not covered by the official instructions, contact Microsoft through its support channel from Windows or the Microsoft website that you navigate to independently.
An activation troubleshooter may report licensing, edition, or hardware-change issues; it will not ask you to pay a person who called unexpectedly or to install remote-control software.
What if 0x009ADC49 appears outside a browser?
The reviewed Microsoft material does not assign this code to a Windows service, driver, or application. If it appears in a normal application dialog without a phone number or scam instructions, record the exact program name, window title, time, and action that preceded it instead of assuming the code has a universal meaning.
- Check whether the message appears only when one third-party application starts. Update or repair that application through its publisher’s official support route.
- Open Settings > Apps and remove software you do not recognize, especially anything installed immediately before the message began.
- Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and complete the full scan described above.
- Take a screenshot of the dialog for a trusted support technician, but redact passwords, product keys, email addresses, and payment details.
Do not download a registry cleaner or a supposed “0x009ADC49 fix” solely because a search result repeats the number. Without an authoritative mapping, such downloads can introduce additional unwanted software.

How should I report the fake Microsoft warning?
Microsoft provides a Report Fraud service for suspected support scams. Submit the details there after securing the computer, and include the displayed telephone number, website address, names of programs the caller asked you to install, and payment information only in the reporting form’s appropriate fields. Also report unauthorized charges to your bank or card issuer and, where applicable, to local law-enforcement or consumer-protection authorities.
Keep the browser page, call records, receipts, and screenshots only if doing so does not require reopening the suspicious site or contacting the scammer. Never test the number to gather more evidence.
How can I prevent the alert from returning?
- Keep Windows, your browser, and commonly used applications updated through their built-in settings or official publisher sites.
- Review browser extensions and remove ones you do not recognize. Recheck the browser’s notification permissions if scam alerts appear as desktop notifications rather than tabs.
- Use a standard user account for everyday work when practical, and reserve administrator approval for software you intentionally install.
- Keep regular backups of documents to storage that is not permanently connected to the PC.
- Teach everyone who uses the computer that an unsolicited support caller, a phone number inside an error message, and an urgent payment demand are warning signs.
These precautions reduce repeat exposure but do not change the key diagnostic fact: the number 0x009ADC49 has no confirmed Microsoft component meaning in the available documentation.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that increase CPU, RAM or disk load, and temporary or cache files. It also includes privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder, and app-crash log; it runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a category-based free trial of at least two days, and then requires a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What should I do if the pop-up keeps reappearing after a scan?
First confirm that the browser is not restoring the same tab or session. End the browser process, reopen it without restoring previous pages, and inspect unfamiliar extensions and notification permissions. If the alert still returns after those checks, uninstall software added around the time of the incident, run Windows updates again, and consider Windows recovery or a reset—especially if someone had remote access.
Can a clean Windows Security scan prove that 0x009ADC49 was harmless?
No. A clean scan is useful evidence that the scanner did not find the threats it detects, but it cannot turn an unsolicited phone number into a legitimate Microsoft contact. Continue to secure accounts, remove scam-requested software, and contact your financial institution if you shared payment details.
Should I call Microsoft using the number shown in the message?
No. Microsoft explicitly says genuine Microsoft error messages never include a phone number to call, and it does not proactively provide unsolicited PC support. Close the alert and reach Microsoft through Windows Settings, Get Help, or a website address you enter yourself.

Is 0x009ADC49 caused by a Windows 10-to-11 upgrade?
There is no authoritative documentation tying this exact code to an upgrade, activation state, driver, or Windows release. If a genuine activation notice appears in Settings after an upgrade, use the built-in activation troubleshooter; do not use the browser pop-up as evidence of an upgrade failure.
What information should I give a legitimate support technician?
Provide the Windows edition and version, the application or Settings page that displayed the message, the exact wording, and the steps that reproduce it. Share screenshots only after removing passwords, product keys, email addresses, and payment details, and never share remote-control credentials or one-time verification codes.
Does the code mean my computer is hacked?
Not by itself. The available Microsoft documentation does not map 0x009ADC49 to a component or confirm a compromise. A browser warning with a phone number is best treated as a scam attempt; investigate further only through Windows Security, Windows settings, and trusted support channels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete the 0x009ADC49 pop-up by clearing my browser cache?
Clearing cached data may remove a stored page element, but it is not the first response and does not address remote-access software or exposed accounts. Close the browser, scan Windows, inspect extensions and notifications, and remove software installed during the incident.
Will System Restore remove a support-scam infection?
System Restore can roll back some system files and settings, but it is not a guaranteed removal method and may not undo stolen credentials or payment fraud. Secure accounts and contact your bank separately, then use Windows recovery options if the computer remains untrusted.
