If 0x0097C270 appears in a browser pop-up with a phone number, do not call it. The exact string has no authoritative Microsoft definition in the available documentation, while a phone number, full-screen browser lock, persistent warning, or demand for urgent technical support matches Microsoft’s description of a support scam. Close the browser, scan with Windows Security, install pending updates, and report the incident. If you granted remote access, shared credentials, or paid, treat it as a compromise and begin account and financial recovery immediately. Only when the code appears in Settings > System > Activation without scam behavior should you use Microsoft’s genuine activation troubleshooting path.

Is error 0x0097C270 a real Windows 10 or Windows 11 error?

The code is not authoritatively documented as a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system, activation, or security code in the available Microsoft material. That does not prove that every message containing the string is identical, but it means you should not download an unofficial “0x0097C270 fix” or assume the number identifies a particular Windows component.

Where the message appears and what it asks you to do are more useful than the characters themselves:

Where you see it Warning signs Correct first response
A web page or browser window A phone number, full-screen page, repeated pop-ups, an urgent demand to call, or a request for remote access or payment Treat it as a suspected support scam. Do not call, click the page, or provide information; contain the browser and scan the device.
Windows Settings > System > Activation No phone number, unsolicited contact, or browser behavior Use the built-in Windows activation troubleshooter. Because Microsoft does not list this code, use official support if the troubleshooter cannot identify it.
After you spoke with a caller or installed software Remote-control software, changed passwords, payment details, or unexplained account activity Follow post-compromise steps: remove unauthorized software, secure accounts, contact financial institutions, scan, update, and consider resetting Windows.

Microsoft’s consumer guidance states: Genuine Microsoft error messages never include a phone number to call. The Federal Trade Commission gives the same practical test: real security pop-ups do not ask you to call a telephone number. A Microsoft-looking design or an error code does not override those warnings.

What should I do immediately when the pop-up is on screen?

Do these actions in order. The goal is to stop the contact attempt without giving the page or caller more information.

  1. Do not call the displayed number. Do not dial it from another phone either.
  2. Do not click buttons, links, chat boxes, or “scan” controls in the warning. They may be designed to keep the page open or direct you to a download.
  3. Do not enter passwords, card numbers, verification codes, or other personal information. Never grant the caller remote control of the PC.
  4. Disconnect the conversation. If you are on a call, hang up. Genuine Microsoft support does not make unsolicited support calls.
  5. Close the browser using the containment steps below. Do not try to negotiate with the page or follow its instructions.

If you already clicked something but did not call, install software, or disclose information, continue with browser containment, a full Windows Security scan, and Windows updates. If you gave access or information, use the longer recovery procedure rather than assuming that closing the tab solved the problem.

How do I remove the 0x0097C270 browser pop-up?

A browser scam page is not fixed by entering the displayed code. Close the page and terminate the browser if necessary.

Exit full-screen mode first

Press Esc to leave full-screen mode. If the page returns to a normal window, close that browser window without selecting controls inside the warning. A full-screen presentation is one of the behaviors Microsoft associates with fake technical-support messages.

End the browser with Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Windows Task Manager. If the compact view appears, choose More details.
  2. On the Processes tab, select the browser that displayed the warning.
  3. Choose End task. This closes the browser process rather than interacting with the scam page.
  4. Reopen the browser only after the scan and update steps below. If it offers to restore the previous session, do not restore the tab that displayed the warning.

The Singapore Police Force and Cyber Security Agency advisory also recommends using Task Manager when a fake warning forces a browser into full-screen mode or prevents normal closure. The advisory recorded at least 10 reported cases and at least S$1.7 million in losses since February 2026; that figure applies to Singapore and is not a worldwide prevalence estimate.

How should I scan and update Windows after closing the page?

Microsoft recommends scanning after a suspected support scam and applying Windows and security updates. Use the built-in tools rather than a download promoted by the pop-up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a full Windows Security scan

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Scan options.
  4. Select Full scan, then choose Scan now.
  5. Allow the scan to finish and follow Windows Security’s removal or quarantine instructions if it identifies unwanted software.

A full scan checks the system after the suspected interaction; it does not make the telephone number legitimate and does not make the original warning a genuine Windows message.

Install pending Windows and security updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, choose Windows Update. In Windows 10, choose Update & Security > Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates and install the updates offered by Windows.
  4. Restart when Windows requests it, then run another Windows Security scan if the warning returns.

What if I spoke to the caller, installed software, or gave remote access?

Interaction changes the incident from a nuisance pop-up to a possible account, payment, or device compromise. Work through these steps from a different trusted device when practical, especially if you believe the affected computer is still under someone else’s control.

  1. End remote access. Disconnect the session and do not allow the caller to reconnect.
  2. Uninstall software the caller asked you to install. Remove remote-control or other programs you installed at the caller’s direction. If you cannot determine what was installed, record the program names before removing them and keep that information for your report.
  3. Change passwords. Start with email, banking, payment, and other important accounts. Change any password reused on more than one service, and do not share the new passwords with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
  4. Contact your bank or card issuer. Tell the institution about unauthorized charges or payment details disclosed during the call and follow its instructions for blocking or replacing affected cards or accounts.
  5. Review account activity. Look for password-reset messages, new devices, changed recovery details, transfers, or purchases you do not recognize. Use each service’s official account-recovery process, not a link or number supplied by the caller.
  6. Scan and update the PC. Complete the full Windows Security scan and Windows update procedure even if the caller claimed to have “fixed” the computer.
  7. Consider resetting Windows. Microsoft guidance identifies a device reset as a recovery option when remote access was granted or fake messages continue. Back up only files you trust, and make sure you can sign in to essential accounts before starting a reset.

Do not pay a second person who promises to recover money or clean the computer through the same unsolicited contact channel. Keep screenshots, telephone numbers, emails, receipts, and software names as evidence, but do not revisit the pop-up to collect them.

How do I report a 0x0097C270 support scam?

Report through official reporting routes reached from the organizations’ genuine websites, not through a link, QR code, telephone number, or email address shown in the warning.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Microsoft: Use Microsoft’s official scam-reporting route. Microsoft also advises reporting suspected technical-support scams through its support channels.
  • United States: The Federal Trade Commission accepts reports through ReportFraud.gov. Include the number shown, what the page claimed, whether software was installed, and any payment or account exposure.
  • Singapore: If you are in Singapore, follow the Singapore Police Force and Cyber Security Agency advisory’s reporting and containment guidance. Its loss figure is specific to Singapore and should not be read as a global statistic.

Reporting cannot undo a payment or guarantee that a device is clean, but it preserves information that can help investigators and financial institutions connect related incidents.

What if 0x0097C270 appears in Windows Activation settings?

If the string appears only in Settings > System > Activation (Windows 11) or the equivalent Windows 10 activation page, with no browser lock, phone number, or unsolicited caller, use Microsoft’s genuine activation path instead of the scam-response path.

  1. Open Settings > System > Activation in Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot if Windows presents the activation troubleshooter.
  3. Follow the prompts and note the result or any different code it reports.
  4. If the troubleshooter cannot resolve the issue, use Microsoft’s official customer-support route. Microsoft documents common activation codes, but it does not list 0x0097C270 in the material covering Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Do not install a registry cleaner, “activation patch,” cracked license utility, or other unofficial repair solely because a web page associates it with this string. If a phone number or urgent call request appears at any point, stop treating the message as ordinary activation troubleshooting and return to the scam-containment steps.

How do I decide which fix path applies?

Use the message’s location, its behavior, and your interaction with it. These three facts determine whether you need simple browser containment, standard activation troubleshooting, or post-compromise recovery.

Why is a phone number such a strong scam signal?

Windows error dialogs normally direct users to settings, documentation, or built-in troubleshooting; they do not ask users to telephone a stranger for immediate repair. Microsoft specifically says genuine error messages never include a phone number, and its technical guidance explains that scammers can create fake errors, display support numbers, and use persistent or full-screen browser pop-ups to induce calls.

A convincing logo, a loud alarm, a countdown, or a code such as 0x0097C270 can all be fabricated by a web page. The request for a phone call is therefore more diagnostically useful than the visual appearance of the warning. Treat the number as hostile content even when the page uses Microsoft’s name and colors.

What should I avoid while trying to fix it?

  • Do not call the number in the alert, search for that number and call a similar result, or let a caller transfer you to another “technician.”
  • Do not provide a one-time verification code, Windows password, email password, card number, or remote-control approval.
  • Do not install a cleaner, driver package, browser extension, or activation tool recommended by the page.
  • Do not assume that a paid service, a reboot, or a closed tab proves the computer is safe after remote access or payment.
  • Do not use the unverified code as a search term for unofficial downloads. Verify the location and behavior first.

Can a Windows reset be necessary?

A reset is not the first response to a browser-only warning that you closed without interacting. It becomes a reasonable recovery option when you granted remote access, cannot remove software installed during the call, or the fake messages persist after scanning and updating.

Before resetting, secure important accounts and contact financial institutions if needed. Preserve trusted personal files and evidence, then use Windows’ own reset and recovery controls rather than a utility advertised by the pop-up. A reset does not reverse a payment or change passwords for you, so complete account and financial recovery separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I trust 0x0097C270 if the message has no phone number?

The string itself is not an authenticated Microsoft code in the documented material, so the absence of a phone number does not validate it. Check where it appears: an entry confined to Windows Activation belongs in the official troubleshooter, while a web page should be closed and treated cautiously rather than repaired with an unofficial download.

What evidence should I save before reporting the pop-up?

Record the displayed text, telephone number, web address shown in the browser, time, screenshots, payment receipts, and names of any software installed at the caller’s request. Save the evidence without reopening the warning, and submit it through an official reporting site reached independently.

Should I change passwords on the affected computer or another device?

If remote access or credential disclosure occurred, use a different trusted device when possible so the person who accessed the PC cannot observe the changes. Prioritize email and financial accounts, then change any reused password and review recovery details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will the activation troubleshooter recognize this code?

Microsoft’s activation documentation for Windows 10 and Windows 11 lists common codes but does not list 0x0097C270. The troubleshooter may identify a different underlying activation problem; if it cannot, use Microsoft’s official support route instead of a third-party “code fix.”
