Error 0x00979E9D has no verified, universal definition in Microsoft’s published guidance. It is therefore not safe to label it a Windows Update, activation, startup, driver, malware, or hardware error from the code alone. The reliable fix starts by recording the complete message, the screen or application that displayed it, and the action that triggered it. Then follow the workflow for that context: Windows Update repair, upgrade troubleshooting, Windows Recovery Environment, or activation troubleshooting. The steps below apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10, with separate menu paths where Microsoft uses different labels.
What does error 0x00979E9D mean?
Microsoft does not provide an authoritative definition that maps 0x00979E9D to one Windows component. The same-looking code can be reported by an application, an installer, a setup phase, or a Settings page, and the surrounding text determines what it means. A search result that assigns this code to a specific service without showing the complete message and triggering action is not enough to diagnose your PC.

Do not begin by changing the registry, replacing hardware, buying a license key, or installing a generic “fixer.” Those actions can make recovery harder when the code came from a particular program rather than Windows itself. First identify the context, then apply the matching repair path.
What should I record before changing anything?
Context is the most important diagnostic evidence for this code. Write down the following while the message is visible:

- Your edition and build. Press Windows key + R, enter
winver, and record the version and build shown. - The date and time of the failure and whether it happens every time or only once.
- If it appeared during an update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the update name and status.
Take a photograph or screenshot if the message disappears during a restart. Microsoft’s general upgrade guidance recommends trying its general fixes before searching for a code-specific explanation; that advice is particularly important when the code has no confirmed definition.

How do I fix 0x00979E9D when it appears in Windows Update?
Use the Windows Update workflow when the code appears in Windows Update, Update history, or while Windows is downloading or installing an update.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter on Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the troubleshooter to complete and apply any correction it offers.
- Restart the PC, return to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter on Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart after it finishes, even if it reports that no change was necessary.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates again.
The menu names differ because Windows 11 and Windows 10 place the troubleshooter in different Settings sections. Do not use a Windows 11 path on Windows 10 or vice versa.
Repair a damaged Windows image from an elevated Command Prompt
If the update repeatedly fails, or the troubleshooter reports damaged components, use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM). Save open work first; the process can take time and may appear paused.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish and note whether it reports that the operation completed successfully or that it could not repair the image.
- Restart Windows and try Windows Update again.
Microsoft’s update guidance also recommends system-file checking when update data or components may be damaged. Run the system-file check from the same elevated Command Prompt after DISM has completed, following the result shown by Windows rather than deleting update folders or editing the registry.
When should I stop and preserve evidence?
If the same update fails after the troubleshooter, a restart, and image repair, record the update’s name, the complete message, and the DISM result. Avoid repeatedly interrupting an update installation. A repeatable failure during one update may require the update history details and setup logs for support, rather than another blind repair.

How do I fix the code during a Windows 11 or Windows 10 upgrade?
An upgrade failure has more possible causes than an ordinary update. Microsoft’s general upgrade checklist is the safest first pass.
Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down and unplug accessories that are not needed to run the upgrade: headphones, printers, scanners, speakers, USB drives, external drives, and docks. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, power, and any hardware required to operate the computer. Reconnect devices after Windows starts successfully and the upgrade is complete.
Install pending updates and drivers
Before retrying, install all available Windows updates and the hardware-driver updates offered through the normal Windows or device-management paths. If Device Manager shows a warning icon, record the device name and address that issue before running the upgrade again. Do not assume that a warning icon proves it caused this code; it is a lead to investigate.
Remove likely software conflicts
Temporarily uninstall non-Microsoft antivirus products and outdated, nonessential software that may interfere with setup. Keep installation media or account details needed to reinstall legitimate software. Windows security protection and third-party security products can conflict during an upgrade, so follow the product’s own uninstall instructions rather than deleting its files manually.
Free space and check the system disk
Make enough room for the upgrade by removing files you can identify and move safely. Do not delete unknown folders in the Windows directory. If disk errors are suspected, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may tell you that the volume is in use and offer to schedule the check for the next restart. Accepting that schedule lets the disk check run before Windows loads; allow it to finish.
Try a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of services and startup programs. If the upgrade works after a clean boot, a disabled service or startup program is a likely conflict. Re-enable items methodically after the upgrade so you can identify the one that caused the failure. If the error remains in a clean boot, the conflict is less likely to be a normal startup application.

Use DISM and preserve setup logs for a repeatable failure
Run the DISM image-repair command shown in the Windows Update section, restart, and retry the upgrade. If it fails at the same point again, do not discard the setup evidence. Microsoft Learn describes SetupDiag, Event Viewer, upgrade phases, and Windows setup logs as the escalation toolkit for analyzing repeatable upgrade failures. Preserve those logs and the exact phase or screen where the code appeared before seeking support.
What should I do if 0x00979E9D appears while Windows is starting?
If the code appears before the desktop loads, treat it as a boot-recovery problem rather than an ordinary Windows Update problem.
Open Windows Recovery Environment
When Windows cannot start normally, it can enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) after failed starts. You can also reach recovery options from Windows when it still boots by opening the recovery settings and choosing the restart option for advanced startup. The wording can vary by Windows build; the destination is the blue recovery menu.
Run Startup Repair
- In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted and provide an administrator credential when requested.
- Let the repair complete without powering off the PC.
- Restart and check whether Windows reaches the sign-in screen.
Microsoft says Startup Repair writes a repair log to %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. If Windows starts afterward, copy that file before making further changes. It can show which startup component the repair examined, but it does not by itself prove that component caused the hexadecimal code.

Use Safe Mode or a clean boot to determine whether a recently installed driver or service is involved. Check Event Viewer for errors at the same date and time as the failure, and record the service or driver name before uninstalling anything. Reinstalling random drivers or deleting startup entries can remove useful evidence and create a second problem.
How do I fix 0x00979E9D during Windows activation?
Use the activation workflow only when the code is shown in the Activation page or alongside a message that Windows cannot be activated.
Run the Activation troubleshooter on Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot.
- Choose the Activation troubleshooter when it is offered.
- Provide administrator approval and maintain an internet connection while it runs.
- Read the result for an edition mismatch, an unactivated digital license, or reactivation after a major hardware change.
Run it on Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select the Activation troubleshooter.
- Run it with administrator access and an active internet connection.
- Follow the specific licensing or edition guidance it reports.
The troubleshooter’s diagnosis matters more than the code alone. An edition mismatch, for example, requires correcting the installed edition or its license; changing unrelated system files will not resolve that condition.

What if the code appears in a specific application?
When a desktop program displays the message, record its name, version if shown, the file or operation involved, and whether the same action works in another Windows account. Because Microsoft has not defined 0x00979E9D as a universal Windows code, do not apply activation or Windows Update repairs solely because the program uses a hexadecimal number.

If the program has a documented support channel, provide the complete message and the time of failure. A Windows system-file repair may be reasonable only when other symptoms also indicate damaged Windows components; it is not a code-specific guarantee for an unrelated application.
How should I escalate a repeatable failure?
Build a compact record before contacting Microsoft or the software publisher:
- Windows edition and build from
winver. - The complete error text and a screenshot or photograph.
- The application or Settings page that displayed it.
- The action that triggered it and the exact time.
- Whether the PC boots normally, in Safe Mode, or only into WinRE.
- Update history details, DISM results, Event Viewer entries, and any SetupDiag or Startup Repair logs relevant to the event.
- Hardware or software changes made immediately before the first occurrence.
Send the record to the party responsible for the failing component. For a Windows Update or upgrade failure, Microsoft’s setup and update support can interpret the logs. For an application-only failure, the application publisher is more likely to recognize its internal error code.
Does Windows 10’s end of support change the fix?
Yes. Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A Windows 10 computer showing this code in 2026 may therefore need a migration or paid-support decision in addition to troubleshooting the immediate failure.

It changes the options available after you identify the source: a Windows 11 upgrade, another supported Windows edition, or an appropriate paid-support arrangement may be relevant, while unsupported registry modifications remain risky.
Which “fixes” should I avoid?
- Do not assume the code is a Windows Update, activation, startup, driver, malware, or hardware code without the surrounding message.
- Do not use a registry cleaner or delete Windows Update cache folders as a first response.
- Do not install an unverified license key or replace a drive, adapter, or USB accessory solely because this code appeared.
- Do not disable security software permanently. If a product must be removed for an upgrade, reinstall a supported protection method afterward.
- Do not interrupt DISM, Startup Repair, a scheduled disk check, or an update installation by powering off unless the computer is completely unresponsive and recovery instructions require it.
- Do not claim that a successful reboot proves the underlying cause is fixed; keep the logs until the same action succeeds repeatedly.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that increase CPU, RAM, or disk load, temporary and cache files, and app-crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary.
Frequently asked questions
Can a single hexadecimal code identify the damaged Windows file?
No. This code has no verified Microsoft mapping to a particular file or component. The complete message, event source, and action that produced it are required before a file-level repair is justified.
Also popular on Amazon
Should I reset Windows if the code keeps returning?
A reset is a last-resort recovery choice, not a diagnosis for this code. Preserve update, setup, activation, or Startup Repair logs first, back up personal data, and confirm whether the failing event is Windows itself or one application; otherwise a reset may remove useful evidence without addressing the real source.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can an offline computer complete the activation repair?
Microsoft’s Activation troubleshooter requires an internet connection and administrator access. Connect the computer temporarily and run the troubleshooter from the correct Windows 11 or Windows 10 Settings path before attempting other licensing changes.
Where can I find the Startup Repair record after Windows recovers?
Startup Repair writes its record to %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. Copy it while Windows is running and include it with the time of failure when asking for help; the file is evidence, not an automatic explanation of every hexadecimal code.
