On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update, select it, and run the troubleshooter.
Apply any correction it offers, restart Windows, and select Check for updates. If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, keep the report and continue; that result does not identify the owner of 0x00907268.
2. Remove external variables during an upgrade or installation
If the code appeared while upgrading Windows or installing a major release, shut down and unplug nonessential USB devices and external hardware. This includes external drives, printers, scanners, speakers, and docking stations. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and other hardware required to operate the computer. Retry the installation after reconnecting devices one at a time so you can identify a trigger.
Install current Windows updates and available hardware-driver updates before retrying an upgrade. Microsoft also advises removing third-party antivirus during an upgrade when you have the information needed to reinstall it. Do not remove security software casually: use its own uninstall procedure, confirm that you can restore it, and avoid browsing or downloading untrusted files while protection is absent. The built-in Windows security protection may change state during removal, so verify your protection status before continuing normal work.

An upgrade can fail when the system volume has file-system errors. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
chkdsk /f C:Windows may tell you that the volume is in use and ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Accept the schedule, restart, and allow the check to finish. The duration depends on the disk and the errors found. After Windows starts, try the update or upgrade again. If the check reports recurring or serious storage problems, back up important files and seek hardware or storage support instead of repeatedly forcing upgrades.

4. Repair the Windows component image with DISM
Open Command Prompt as administrator. At the elevated prompt, enter the command exactly as shown:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthWait for the operation to reach completion; closing the window early can leave the repair unfinished. Restart Windows when it completes, then run Windows Update again. DISM repairs the Windows component image used by servicing; it does not establish what 0x00907268 means in another application.
5. Reset the Windows Update download cache
Use this procedure when update files may be damaged or an earlier attempt was interrupted. It changes only the contents of the Windows Update download cache, but it requires an administrator account.
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
- Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents inside that folder, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and close any program holding the file. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart the computer, open Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Windows will download fresh update data after the cache is cleared. The first scan can take longer because previous download files are no longer available. If the code occurs in the Store, an activation dialog, or an unrelated program, this cache reset is unlikely to address the underlying component.
What if 0x00907268 appeared during Windows Setup or an upgrade?
Treat an upgrade failure as a broader installation problem rather than assuming the number has a published definition. Use the following order:
- Record the exact Setup screen, phase, and whether the machine rolled back after a reboot.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external drives, printers, scanners, speakers, and docks.
- Install current Windows updates and hardware-driver updates while the existing installation still works.
- Review third-party antivirus dependencies. If Microsoft’s upgrade guidance requires removal, first confirm the reinstall instructions and license details, then remove it using the vendor’s supported method.
- Run
chkdsk /f C:from an elevated Command Prompt and complete the scheduled restart if requested. - Run
DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthfrom an elevated Command Prompt. - Retry the upgrade with a stable power and network connection, reconnecting external devices only after the installation succeeds.
If the same code returns at the same installation phase, preserve the Setup wording and the changes you made. That phase information is more useful to Microsoft support than the hexadecimal value alone.

What if the code is not from Windows Update?
Microsoft Store
Confirm that the code is displayed by the Store and identify the specific app. Capture the app name, the action that failed, and whether other Store apps install normally. Use Microsoft Store support for a Store-wide issue; use the app publisher for a single-app issue. Do not assume that deleting the Windows Update cache repairs Store package data.
Activation
Record whether the message appeared while entering a key, signing in, or validating a digital license. Activation problems require licensing and account context, so consult Microsoft’s activation support with the exact wording and edition of Windows. Avoid changing system services or deleting update folders solely because the number begins with 0x.
Driver installation
Write down the device name, connection type, driver version, and the installer that displayed the code. The device manufacturer’s support documentation and the driver package’s release notes should control the next step. If the device is essential, avoid repeatedly uninstalling drivers until you have a working replacement or rollback path.
Third-party software
Test whether the error is limited to one application and whether the program’s own update or repair option recognizes it. Generic Windows Update procedures can consume time without changing an application-owned error.
How can I decide which troubleshooting path is credible?
Use four tests to separate an update problem from an unrelated application problem:
- Where: Is the code visibly inside Windows Update, Windows Setup, the Store, activation, a driver installer, or another program?
- When: Does it appear during download, installation, reboot, or launch?
- Scope: Does one update or app fail, or do all comparable operations fail?
- Reproduction: Can the relevant Microsoft troubleshooter reproduce or repair it?
For example, a code that appears only when one graphics package is installed points toward the device or package publisher. A code that appears when every Windows update is downloaded and is detected by the Windows Update troubleshooter supports the update path. These observations do not decode 0x00907268; they identify which support channel has the necessary context.
What should I avoid doing?
- Do not claim that the code proves malware, a failing disk, or a particular missing DLL. No verified mapping establishes any of those conclusions.

The procedure targets the contents of Windows’ update-download cache, not documents, photos, or application projects. Stop the Windows Update service first and delete only the contents of the named folder; if a file is locked, do not force deletion.
Why does the same code appear after every restart?
A restart does not identify the code’s owner. Compare the component and operation that trigger it, check whether one item or all comparable items fail, and give that reproduction pattern to the relevant Microsoft or software publisher support team.
