Error 0x0090668C does not have a confirmed public mapping in Microsoft’s documented Windows activation, Windows Update, installation or Device Manager code lists. That means there is no single, code-specific fix that can safely be prescribed. The correct repair depends on where the message appears, the complete wording around it, and what changed immediately beforehand.

First record the full message, identify the program or Windows page displaying it, and run winver to capture your Windows edition, version and build. Then follow the matching branch below: activation, Windows Update, installation, Device Manager or a third-party application. The procedures use built-in Windows tools and Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance for those areas.

What does Windows error 0x0090668C mean?

Microsoft’s published lists do not identify 0x0090668C as a documented Windows error code. It may be an application-specific value, a wrapper around another failure, or a code copied incompletely from a longer message. Treating it as a confirmed activation, driver or update code can send you to the wrong repair.

Use the location of the message to choose a path:

Where the message appears Most useful first action What to look for
Settings > Activation Run the Activation troubleshooter Whether Windows reports a license, edition or hardware-change problem
Windows Update Run the Windows Update troubleshooter Update history, pending restart and the complete accompanying text
During setup or an upgrade Disconnect nonessential hardware and check storage/system integrity USB devices, disks, drivers and the setup phase that failed
Device Manager Open the affected device’s Properties page The separate numbered Device status code, which may not be 0x0090668C
A named application Use that application’s logs and support instructions The app version, installer name and its own error documentation

How should I capture the exact context before changing anything?

  1. Copy the complete message. Include the title-bar text, any text before or after 0x0090668C, and the name of the application, device or Settings page. A screenshot is useful, but also copy the text so it can be searched and sent to support.
  2. Record Windows details. Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and select OK. Note whether the system is Windows 11 or Windows 10, the edition, feature version and OS build.
  3. Write down recent changes. Record any Windows update, driver installation, BIOS or firmware change, new peripheral, disk replacement, software installation or account/licence change that preceded the error.
  4. Check whether Windows boots normally. A system that reaches the desktop permits normal troubleshooters and repair commands. A system that cannot boot may require Windows Recovery Environment or installation media instead.
  5. Preserve evidence. Do not clear update history, uninstall several drivers at once or reset Windows before saving screenshots and relevant logs. Those changes can remove clues needed by Microsoft or the hardware/software vendor.

How do I fix 0x0090668C when it appears in Activation?

Run the built-in Activation troubleshooter first. It can identify common licence, edition and hardware-change conditions, but an unlisted code still requires the complete message and account or licence details for support.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
  2. Expand the activation status area and select Troubleshoot if it is available.
  3. Follow the prompts, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the digital licence when requested, and restart if Windows asks you to.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  2. Select Troubleshoot, complete the checks and restart if prompted.

Confirm that the installed edition matches the licence (for example, Home versus Pro). If the troubleshooter does not recognise 0x0090668C, Microsoft advises searching Windows Help or contacting customer support with the exact code and message rather than applying an activation registry hack.

How do I fix it when the code appears during Windows Update?

Use the Windows Update troubleshooter, then repair the component store and system files if the failure continues. The menus differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the appropriate troubleshooter

  1. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  2. On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Select Windows Update, then Run the troubleshooter.
  3. Apply any suggested correction, restart, and try Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates (or the equivalent Windows 10 page).

Repair the Windows image and protected files

Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt. Run these commands one at a time:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

DISM may take time and works best when the computer can connect to Microsoft Update servers to obtain missing or corrupted files. When it finishes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows and attempt the update again. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact result instead of repeatedly interrupting it.

Reset the update download cache only for an update failure

A damaged download cache can prevent an update from completing. This procedure is not a general fix for a code shown elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt.
  2. Stop the services that use the cache:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
  1. Rename the cache folder so Windows can create a clean one:
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
  1. Start the services again:
net start bits
net start wuauserv
  1. Restart the PC, verify that the date, time and time zone are correct, and run Windows Update again.

If a service refuses to stop, close Settings and other update tools, restart Windows, and retry the sequence. Do not delete unrelated folders or alter the registry based only on this hexadecimal value.

Try a clean boot when another program may be interfering

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter msconfig, and select OK.
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
  3. Open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable nonessential startup items.
  4. Restart and retry Windows Update. Restore the normal startup configuration afterward by reversing these changes.

What should I do if 0x0090668C appears during Windows installation or an upgrade?

Installation failures are sensitive to attached hardware, storage errors and incompatible drivers. Microsoft’s general installation guidance recommends reducing variables before repeating setup.

  1. Back up personal files to another disk before attempting an upgrade, reset or clean installation.
  2. Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, external drives, printers, card readers and other peripherals. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display and network connection needed for setup.
  3. Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting it. Expand each relevant category and look for a yellow warning icon. Record the device name and driver provider.
  4. Obtain drivers from the computer or component manufacturer’s support page, matching your exact model and Windows version. Avoid installing several unverified driver packages during the same troubleshooting session.
  5. Check the disk from an elevated Command Prompt:
chkdsk /f C:

If Windows says the volume is in use, type Y to schedule the check and restart. Allow it to finish; interrupting a disk check can create additional problems.

  1. Run the DISM and SFC commands shown in the Windows Update section, restart, and retry setup.
  2. If setup still fails, note the percentage or phase at which it stops, the complete message and the setup log location shown by Windows. These details are more useful to support than the hexadecimal code alone.

Is 0x0090668C a Device Manager driver error?

Not necessarily. Device Manager normally displays a separate numbered status code in the device’s Properties dialog, and that actionable code may differ from 0x0090668C.

  1. Right-click Start > Device Manager.
  2. Expand the category containing the warning icon, right-click the device and select Properties.
  3. Read the Device status box on the General tab and record its exact Code number.
  4. On the Driver tab, note the provider, date and version. Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied for the exact device and Windows build.
  5. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, Roll Back Driver may be available. Otherwise select Uninstall Device, restart, and let Windows redetect it; use the manufacturer’s package if Windows cannot restore a working driver.

For persistent hardware failures, provide the vendor with the device model, hardware IDs from Properties > Details, the Device Manager status code and the Windows build. Do not assume that a generic driver utility or a registry edit addresses the underlying hardware fault.

What if a third-party application shows the code?

An application can use hexadecimal values that are not Windows system codes. Reproduce the error in that application, update it through its official distribution channel, check its own logs and contact its developer with the complete message, application version and Windows build.

Test once with nonessential plug-ins, overlays and security software integrations disabled only if the application’s documentation permits it. Re-enable each item after testing so you do not leave the computer in a less protected or less functional state.

Can I use Windows Recovery or installation media?

Use recovery options when Windows cannot boot normally or built-in troubleshooters cannot run. A blank USB flash drive is useful for creating Windows installation or recovery media, but creating media can erase the drive, so copy anything important from it first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On a working PC, create official Windows installation media for the same major Windows version and edition when possible.
  2. Boot the affected PC from the USB using its firmware boot menu.
  3. Select Repair your computer rather than installing immediately. Try Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, System Restore or Command Prompt as appropriate.
  4. If you choose a reset or clean installation, confirm that your backup is current and understand which partitions and files will be removed.

How do I decide which branch to follow?

Situation Start here Escalate when
Activation page displays the code Activation troubleshooter and edition/licence check The code remains unlisted or the licence cannot be verified
Update history or Windows Update displays it Windows Update troubleshooter, DISM, SFC, then cache reset The same update fails after a restart and repaired image
Setup or upgrade stops Backup, disconnect peripherals, check Device Manager and disk, then DISM/SFC The failure repeats at the same setup phase
A device has a warning icon Read its Device status code and reinstall or roll back the correct driver The vendor confirms a hardware or firmware issue
An application alone shows it Application logs, update and developer support Other applications or Windows components begin failing too
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What evidence should I send to Microsoft or a vendor?

Include the full unedited message, a screenshot, the application or device name, Windows edition/version/build from winver, the date the issue began, recent changes, whether Windows boots normally, and the exact output from DISM, SFC or CHKDSK if you ran them. For update failures, include the update’s KB number and the entry in Update history. For a device, include the model, hardware ID and Device Manager status code.

Microsoft’s published guidance says that codes not listed in its support material should be taken to customer support. A vendor can only interpret an application-specific value with its own logs and version information. Avoid registry ownership changes, random DLL downloads and third-party “fixers” presented as guaranteed solutions for this unconfirmed code.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while offering setting tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder and crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription, results vary, and it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Could 0x0090668C be caused by malware?

The hexadecimal value alone is not evidence of malware, and Microsoft has not published a mapping that identifies it as an infection indicator. Keep your security software current and use its normal scan and quarantine process if you have independent signs of compromise, such as unknown startup programs or repeated security alerts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will restarting Windows permanently clear this error?

A restart can finish a pending update, release a locked file or reload a driver, so it is a sensible first test. If the message returns, record when it returns and continue with the branch that matches the screen or application showing it rather than repeatedly rebooting.

Should I reinstall Windows to remove 0x0090668C?

Reinstallation is a last resort because it can remove applications, settings and personal data. Use the activation, update, storage and system-file checks first, create verified backups, and preserve the error details so you can determine whether the underlying problem is a licence, hardware, driver or application issue.

Can System Restore undo the condition that triggered the code?

System Restore can roll back system files, drivers and settings to an earlier restore point, but it does not restore personal documents and may not affect an application-owned error. Choose a restore point created before the change, keep a current backup, and check which programs Windows says will be affected before confirming.
