How do I fix it if Device Manager shows the error?
If the code appears in Device Manager, inspect the affected device’s own status and follow the driver troubleshooting path only when the device details point there. Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10, but does not cover every possible Device Manager code.
- Open Device Manager from the Start menu search.
- Double-click the affected device to open its properties.
- On the General tab, read the Device status box. Note the complete text and any code shown there.
- If the device status indicates a driver issue, open the Driver tab and choose Update Driver. Follow the prompts and restart if Windows asks you to.
- If updating does not resolve the device problem, return to the device in Device Manager, right-click it, and choose Uninstall device. Restart Windows, then open Device Manager and choose Action > Scan for hardware changes to have Windows detect and reinstall the device.
- Check Device status again and retry the action that previously failed.
Uninstalling a device can temporarily make it unavailable. If Windows does not reinstall it or the same status persists, consult the device manufacturer or Microsoft Support. Microsoft’s article explicitly notes that it does not include every Device Manager code and directs readers with unlisted codes to those support channels. Do not apply this branch just because 0x00901A58 contains numbers or looks technical; use it when Device Manager identifies the affected device.

- Record the update name or identifier shown with the message and the complete text of the error.
- If the failure repeats, use the Windows Update message and update details when contacting Microsoft Support. If the error instead appears in a separate updater or installer, contact that product’s vendor.
A code lookup with no match cannot tell you which update failed or why. Avoid trying device-driver or third-party-app repairs unless the update details or another diagnostic identifies that component as the source.
What if it appears in an installer or third-party app?
If a non-Microsoft program, installer, game, security product, or peripheral utility displays 0x00901A58, investigate that product first. Microsoft notes that non-system software can return error codes, so the number alone is not evidence that a Windows subsystem or driver is responsible.
