Windows 11
- Open the Get Help app and start the automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
- If you need the Settings route, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any correction that the workflow reports, restart the computer, and return to Settings > Windows Update to check again.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Complete the suggested actions, restart, and select Check for updates from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, keep its result with your notes. That result does not establish what 0x008FD796 means; it only says that this automated check found no applicable correction.

Upgrade failures are often affected by hardware connections, pending updates, drivers, security software, or disk errors. Work through these checks before repeating the upgrade.
Remove nonessential hardware
Shut down, then disconnect USB devices, external drives, printers, scanners, docks, and other hardware that the upgrade does not require. Leave only essential input, display, network, and power connections. Reconnect devices one at a time after Windows is stable so that a newly reproduced failure can be associated with a particular device.
Install pending updates first
From the Windows Update page, complete updates that are already offered, restart when requested, and check again. A partially serviced system can produce a different failure on every retry, so note the package and status in Update history instead of relying on the 0x008FD796 token alone.
Investigate Device Manager warnings
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to recently added or critical hardware.

Check third-party security interference
Security software from outside Windows can interfere with an upgrade. Consult that product’s documentation for a temporary, reversible maintenance mode or removal procedure, and restore protection immediately after the test. Do not leave a computer unprotected while connected to untrusted networks.
Test the system disk when errors point there
Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
chkdsk /f C:Accept a restart-time scan if Windows says the volume is in use. Save work first and allow the check to finish; interrupting a disk repair can create a second problem unrelated to the original code.
How can I reset Windows Update files and services?
Use this branch only when the event is clearly tied to Windows Update and the troubleshooter did not resolve it. Microsoft documents stopping the Windows Update service, clearing the contents of its download cache, restarting the service, and checking time, network, VPN, and storage conditions. These actions are general update troubleshooting steps, not proof that 0x008FD796 has one of those causes.
- Save open work and sign in with an administrator account.
- Open the Services console by pressing Windows key + R, entering
services.msc, and pressing Enter. - Locate Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- In File Explorer, browse to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Clear the contents inside this folder, not the Windows folder itself. If a file is locked, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped before trying again. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.

- Restart Windows and run the update check again. Record whether the same package produces the code or whether the failure changes.
Clearing the cache removes downloaded update files, not personal documents, but an interrupted update can require another download. Do not delete other folders or registry entries as part of this procedure, and keep a backup before making any broader system change.
Should I run DISM and SFC for 0x008FD796?
Run component-repair commands when the accompanying message or logs indicate missing or corrupted Windows servicing files. The documented examples for these commands concern errors such as 0x800F081F and 0x800F0831; they do not identify 0x008FD796. In other words, successful commands can repair component corruption, but they cannot prove that corruption caused this particular token.

- Run the image-repair command and wait for it to finish:
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth- When DISM completes, run System File Checker:
Sfc.exe /Scannow- Restart Windows, then retry the operation that produced the error once. Keep the command results and exact completion messages with your notes.
Do not repeatedly cancel DISM or SFC because progress appears slow. If either command reports that it could not complete, preserve that wording; it is more diagnostically useful than rerunning the same command without recording the result.

A stop or restart condition needs a stability-first approach rather than an update-cache reset. If Windows starts normally, save data before testing. If it does not, use Windows Recovery options to reach Safe Mode.
Start with Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and select a Safe Mode option. If this path is unavailable, use the recovery environment reached after repeated failed starts. The exact menu can vary by device and edition.

- Remove hardware added immediately before the first crash.
- In Device Manager, inspect warning icons and newly changed devices.
- Install current Windows updates and hardware drivers once the system is stable enough to do so.
- Check that the system drive has sufficient free space for logs, paging, and updates.
- Verify that the computer’s BIOS or other firmware is current according to the device maker’s instructions.
- Run the hardware or memory tests supplied by the computer manufacturer when the symptoms suggest a physical fault.
Use recovery only after preserving evidence
Event Viewer can show the sequence around a restart: press Windows key + R, enter eventvwr.msc, and inspect Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application at the recorded time.
