How should I capture the context before changing anything?
Record the circumstances first. A precise context lets you select the correct repair branch and gives Microsoft or an administrator something actionable if the problem continues.
- Copy the complete message. Note the title bar, surrounding text, buttons, and whether another code, file name, KB number, or “faulting module” appears. A screenshot is useful, but also transcribe the text so it can be searched and compared later.
- Record the operation. Write down whether the message appeared during Windows Update, a feature upgrade, a clean installation, sign-in, startup, shutdown, or one particular application. Note whether the system froze, restarted, displayed a stop-code screen, or remained usable.
- Write down timing and recent changes. Include the approximate time, the last successful update, newly installed software, a driver change, a new USB device or dock, and any security-product change. Do not uninstall anything yet; the record is for correlation.
- Check Event Viewer. Press
Win+X, choose Event Viewer, and inspect Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application around the recorded time. Did the code appear during Windows Update?
Use Microsoft’s Windows Update sequence when the message appeared while downloading or installing updates. Microsoft Support says that the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve an error code encountered during Windows update installation; it does not claim that this troubleshooter recognizes 0x008F6873 specifically.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run. If the Get Help app offers an automated Windows Update troubleshooter first, allow it to complete and apply only the changes it reports.
- Read the result. A message that a service, cache, or pending restart was corrected is useful evidence; a message that no problem was found does not rule out component-store corruption.
- Restart Windows even if the troubleshooter says no change was required.
Check for updates again
After the restart, open Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Keep the device connected to reliable power and network service, and allow a pending restart to finish before running another check. If the same code returns, note the update name or KB number shown beside it; that identifier is more actionable than the hexadecimal code.
Repair the component store with DISM

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthWait for the command to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window because progress can pause for several minutes. A successful completion means the servicing image was checked and, where possible, repaired; it does not prove that the unknown code has a single known cause.
Restart, service the stack, and repair protected files
- Restart after DISM completes, even if no corruption was reported.
- Install the latest servicing stack update offered for your exact Windows release. The servicing stack is the part of Windows that installs updates; an outdated stack can prevent otherwise valid packages from applying.
- Run Microsoft’s protected-file corruption repair procedure for your release. On installations where System File Checker is supported, the usual administrator command is
sfc /scannow; let it finish, then restart if it reports repairs. If your Microsoft guidance specifies a different sequence, follow that release-specific sequence. - Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again. Record the KB number and the complete result if it fails.
Install a package manually only when you know the exact KB
If Windows Update still fails and the update history identifies a specific package, download the matching architecture and Windows version from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it manually. Match the KB, edition, release, and x64, x86, or ARM architecture; a similarly named package is not an acceptable substitute. Manual installation is reversible only through the normal update-uninstall process, so create a current backup and avoid interrupting power while it runs.
What if 0x008F6873 appeared during an upgrade or Windows installation?
Upgrade and setup failures use a different path from routine monthly updates. Microsoft recommends reducing hardware and software variables before retrying.
Disconnect nonessential hardware

Inspect Device Manager
- Press
Win+Xand open Device Manager. - Expand categories related to storage, display, network, audio, and USB. A yellow warning icon indicates that Windows has identified a device problem worth resolving before the upgrade.
- Open the device’s Properties, read the status message on the General tab, and record the driver provider and version under Driver. Use the device manufacturer’s documented driver for your exact model; do not install a generic package simply to remove the icon.
Consider security software interference
Third-party antivirus or security software can interfere with setup. Microsoft lists this as a possible factor, not as proof that security software is responsible. Before changing it, confirm that you have the product’s reinstall instructions and any required activation details. Use the product’s documented temporary-disable or uninstall procedure, disconnect from untrusted networks while protection is reduced, complete the upgrade, and reinstall or re-enable protection immediately afterward if it was not restored automatically.
Repair disk errors
Setup can fail when the installation drive has file-system errors. Back up important files first. Then use Windows’ drive error-checking tool for the system volume, follow its request to schedule a check at restart if necessary, and allow the operation to complete. If the utility reports repeated errors, unusual drive noise, or unreadable files, stop retrying upgrades and arrange a drive-health assessment; repeated installation attempts can worsen data loss on a failing disk.
What if the symptom is a crash, unexpected restart, or stop-code screen?
A stop-code or sudden restart is a stability problem, not evidence that 0x008F6873 is a Windows Update code. Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance starts with hardware, Safe Mode, drivers, disk space, and current updates.
Remove newly added hardware
Power off and disconnect hardware added shortly before the crashes, including expansion cards, external adapters, memory, and docks when removal is practical. If the system becomes stable, reconnect one item at a time and test. Do not open a sealed laptop or handle internal components unless you are qualified and the manufacturer’s instructions permit it.
Use Safe Mode to separate startup software from core Windows

- At the recovery menu, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select the Safe Mode option appropriate to your test.
- In Safe Mode, remove or roll back the last suspect driver or startup application only if the evidence points to it. If the crash disappears in Safe Mode, a normal-startup driver or service becomes more likely; if it continues, focus on hardware, core Windows files, or storage.
Check Device Manager and free space
Look for warning icons in Device Manager and keep adequate free space on the Windows volume for paging, updates, and crash data. Remove or move personal files when the drive is nearly full, but do not delete unknown files from C:Windows or the component store. Install current Windows updates once the machine is stable enough to complete a restart.

Capture the stop-code details
Write down the stop-code name, any “What failed” module, and the time of the restart. Reliability Monitor can show a timeline of application and Windows failures, while Event Viewer may contain a kernel or driver event immediately before the restart. These details can identify a driver or device even when the displayed hexadecimal value cannot.

What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not treat search-result code lists as authoritative. The exact value has no verified Microsoft mapping in the available documentation.
- Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder, component-store files, or registry entries as a first step. Such changes can remove useful logs or create a second problem.
- Do not force-shut down during DISM, servicing-stack installation, or setup. Interruptions can leave Windows in a pending or partially serviced state.
- Do not install a package for a different Windows release or architecture. Confirm the KB and system type first.
- Do not disable security protection permanently. If a test requires a temporary change, document it, stay on a trusted network, and restore protection promptly.
- Do not assume a clean reinstall is the first answer. Preserve logs and personal files; a reinstall can erase the evidence needed to identify a driver, disk, or setup conflict.
When should I escalate the problem?
Escalate when the code recurs after the context-appropriate steps, when Windows cannot boot normally, when DISM or file repair reports errors it cannot correct, or when disk checks report physical or repeated failures. Provide the complete message, Windows edition and build, architecture, KB number if any, Event Viewer details, Device Manager warnings, and a timeline of recent changes. Is error 0x008F6873 a virus warning?
The hexadecimal value alone does not establish malware, and no authoritative source assigns it a security meaning. Check the complete message and the event or application log; if you are concerned about security, use the protection already installed on Windows or your device according to its normal scan procedure rather than relying on the code.
Can System Restore remove this error?
System Restore can reverse selected system files, drivers, and settings to an earlier restore point, but there is no evidence that it targets this code.
