Error 0x008F1117 is not mapped to a documented Windows component, update package, application, or device in the available Microsoft and vendor material. That means the code alone cannot identify a cause or a single guaranteed fix. The correct repair depends on where it appeared: Windows Update, an upgrade or installer, or a crash/restart screen. First record that context, then follow the matching Windows procedure below. The steps apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10 and use built-in troubleshooters, services, Safe Mode, Device Manager, updates, recovery tools, and system-file repair.
What does error 0x008F1117 mean?
The hexadecimal string is an error label, not a diagnosis. No authoritative Microsoft or hardware-vendor document in the available material assigns 0x008F1117 to a particular HRESULT, Windows component, update, driver, application, or physical device. Treat it as a symptom reported by the screen or process that displayed it.

A code shown in Windows Update calls for a different sequence from one shown after a blue or black screen, and an installer failure has its own preparation steps.
Where did 0x008F1117 appear?
Use the location, boot state, recent changes, and repeatability to select a route. Write down the exact wording around the code, the application or setup program involved, and whether a restart cleared it.

| Route | Where the code appears | Windows state | Clue before the failure | Start with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Update download, installation, or Update history | Windows normally reaches the desktop | Pending update, repeated update attempt, or update rollback | Windows Update troubleshooter, then connectivity, cache, time, and drivers |
| Crash or unexpected restart | Blue or black screen, restart notice, or stop-style screen | Windows may restart, fail to sign in, or boot only intermittently | New hardware, a driver change, or new software | Remove recent hardware, use Safe Mode, and inspect Device Manager |
| Upgrade or installation | Feature upgrade, setup program, or application installer | Existing Windows may still boot normally | Upgrade began after a software, driver, or hardware change | Disconnect nonessential hardware, update, free space, and repair system files |
If the code appears in more than one place, handle the earliest reproducible event first. For example, an update failure that is followed by a restart may need the Update route before the crash route.
How do I fix 0x008F1117 during Windows Update?
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter first, then work through the basic conditions that can interrupt an update. Stop when the update completes; changing several variables at once makes the cause harder to identify.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Accept any repair that the troubleshooter reports and restart when prompted.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
On Windows 10, the wording is similar but the troubleshooter is under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. If the troubleshooter cannot repair the issue, continue with the checks below rather than repeatedly pressing “try again.”
2. Confirm power, network, and administrator access
- Keep a laptop connected to AC power during the download and restart phases.
- Use a stable internet connection. If a VPN, captive portal, or metered connection is involved, disconnect it temporarily and retry on a normal connection.
- Sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts. A standard account may download an update but fail when system files or services must be changed.
- Restart once before another attempt. A pending restart can leave the servicing stack in an incomplete state.
3. Disconnect unnecessary external hardware
Shut down and unplug external drives, docks, USB hubs, printers, cameras, game controllers, and other devices that are not required to start Windows. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection attached. Reconnect devices one at a time after the update succeeds; this identifies a device or its driver if the error returns.
4. Clear the Windows Update cache
Corrupted temporary update files can cause the same attempt to fail repeatedly. Use an administrator account and preserve the folder rather than deleting unrelated Windows files.
- Press Windows, type Services, right-click Services, and choose Run as administrator.
- Find Windows Update, open its context menu, and select Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder. If a file is locked, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped before trying again.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart Windows, then check for updates again.
If the Services interface does not stop the service, open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run net stop wuauserv. Delete the contents of the same folder, then run net start wuauserv and restart.

5. Set date, time, and time zone automatically
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically when available.
- Select Sync now, restart, and retry Windows Update.
An incorrect clock can make update certificates and download validation appear invalid even when the network is working.
6. Update third-party drivers
Windows Update may fail while a third-party storage, network, graphics, audio, or chipset driver is incompatible with the pending update. Open the hardware maker’s support page for your exact computer or component, install the current Windows 11 or Windows 10 driver intended for that model, restart, and then retry. Do not install a driver simply because its name looks similar; use the model and operating-system edition shown by the manufacturer.
How do I fix it after a crash, blue screen, black screen, or unexpected restart?
Microsoft’s stop-code guidance says an unexpected restart might be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software. Work from the most recent change and use Safe Mode when normal startup is unstable.
1. Remove newly added hardware
Power off the computer and disconnect hardware added shortly before the first restart: USB devices, expansion cards, docks, external storage, printers, and adapters. If the computer has internal hardware that was recently installed, return it to the previous configuration only if you can do so safely and without opening a device that is still under warranty. Start Windows with only essential peripherals and check whether the restart recurs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Enter Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers so you can separate a basic Windows startup from a third-party driver or service.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery and select Restart now next to Advanced startup. On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- After the recovery menu appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
If Windows will not stay open long enough to reach Settings, hold Shift while selecting Restart from the sign-in or Start menu. If that is impossible, interrupt startup only as a last resort to make Windows enter its recovery environment; repeated forced shutdowns can risk unsaved work.

3. Inspect Device Manager
- In Safe Mode or normal Windows, right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the recent change, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Disk drives.
- Look for a warning icon. Open the device’s Properties to read its status and driver details.
- Use Update driver when a compatible official driver is available. If the problem began immediately after an update, use Roll Back Driver when that option is present.
- If the device is nonessential and clearly associated with the restart, choose Disable device for a test or Uninstall device and restart. Do not remove an essential storage or boot controller without a recovery plan.
4. Install pending Windows updates
When the system can remain stable, install available Windows updates and restart. A later cumulative update can contain a compatibility correction for a driver or service that triggered the restart. If the update itself produces the code, return to the Windows Update route instead of forcing repeated restarts.
5. Use recovery when the restart continues
From Settings > System > Recovery, use the available recovery option that matches the timeline. System Restore can return system files and settings to an earlier restore point without targeting personal documents. The Windows recovery environment may also offer Startup Repair or uninstall options for a recent update. Read each confirmation screen carefully and back up accessible personal files before a reset or other operation that may remove applications.
How do I fix 0x008F1117 during an upgrade or installation?
Upgrade and installer failures are usually made harder by attached devices, pending updates, incompatible drivers, third-party security software, or insufficient disk space. Prepare the existing installation before launching setup again.
1. Unplug nonessential hardware
Disconnect external storage, printers, cameras, docks, and other peripherals. Keep only the input, display, network, and power connections required for the setup. This prevents setup from selecting an incompatible driver or writing boot information to the wrong device.
2. Finish Windows and hardware-driver updates
Open Windows Update and install pending updates that can complete normally. Then update hardware drivers from the computer or component manufacturer. Restart between driver installation and the next upgrade attempt so that pending replacements are committed.
3. Temporarily remove conflicting software when appropriate
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance includes uninstalling non-Microsoft antivirus and nonessential software when appropriate. Use the program’s normal uninstall process, restart, and keep the installer or license information available for reinstalling it after the upgrade. Do not leave a computer without protection longer than necessary, and do not remove software if your organization’s administrator requires it; ask that administrator for an approved procedure.

4. Free sufficient disk space
Open Settings > System > Storage and remove or move files you no longer need. Empty temporary locations and the Recycle Bin only after checking their contents. An upgrade needs working space in addition to the size of its download, so do not wait for setup to report a full disk.
5. Repair Windows system files
Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run the servicing repair first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart after both commands finish, then retry the installer. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact message rather than repeatedly interrupting it; the failure itself is useful information for support.
6. Escalate a repeatable setup failure
If the same installer action produces 0x008F1117 after the preparation above, note the setup edition, the step at which it fails, available disk space, removed hardware, and the exact text surrounding the code. Microsoft directs users to contact support when upgrade troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.

What if Windows will not boot normally?
Use the Windows recovery environment instead of repeatedly forcing a normal boot. From another working device, you can also record the code and the last successful action so a support technician can distinguish an update failure from a hardware or driver failure.
- At the sign-in screen, hold Shift and select Power > Restart, if the screen is reachable.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
- Try Startup Settings and Safe Mode first, because they allow you to remove a recent driver or software change.
- If Safe Mode does not help, use an available recovery option such as System Restore or Startup Repair. Choose the option whose description matches the problem and preserve personal files whenever the interface offers that choice.
- After Windows starts, inspect Device Manager, install pending updates, and reconnect removed hardware one piece at a time.
If the recovery environment cannot start or recovery repeatedly fails, stop experimenting with registry cleaners and unsigned driver packages. Contact Microsoft support or the computer manufacturer with the code, screen wording, recent changes, and the recovery results.
Best Value
How can I tell which troubleshooting route is working?
Change one variable per restart and keep a short log. A useful entry contains the date and time, the action immediately before the code, whether Windows booted, the device or software changed, and the exact result after the next restart.
- Update route: the update history no longer shows a failed attempt and the next check completes without the code.
- Crash route: the computer remains stable in normal mode after removed hardware or a driver change, including several restarts.
- Upgrade route: setup passes the stage that previously failed after updates, space, software, and system-file repairs are completed.
If the code appears only once and the triggering operation succeeds afterward, preserve the log and monitor the next normal restart rather than making unrelated changes. A repeatable failure is stronger evidence that support can use to identify the responsible component.

Do I need to buy a device or replacement part?
No physical product is justified by this undocumented code alone. The evidence-based path uses Windows’ own troubleshooter, services, cache, Safe Mode, Device Manager, updates, recovery options, and system-file repair. Consider replacement hardware only after a repeatable hardware symptom has been isolated and confirmed by the computer or component manufacturer.
When should I contact Microsoft or the manufacturer?
Escalate when the code remains reproducible after the route that matches its context, when Windows cannot boot into recovery, or when removing a device or driver would risk data or warranty coverage. Include the exact code, the complete message, where it appeared, Windows edition, recent hardware or software changes, update or installer stage, Safe Mode result, Device Manager status, and the commands or recovery options already tried. This prevents support from sending you through a procedure intended for a different type of failure.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL problems, while offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep using my computer if the code appeared only once?
If Windows now starts normally and the operation completes, save your work and record the screen wording, time, and action that preceded the code. Watch for a repeat during the next update, restart, or installation; recurrence is more useful for diagnosis than a single unexplained display.
What information should I photograph before restarting?
Capture the entire message, any named application or update, the percentage or setup stage, and whether a restart was requested. Also note newly connected devices and the last driver or software you installed, because that context determines which Windows procedure applies.
Is Safe Mode available on both Windows 11 and Windows 10?
Yes. Both editions provide Safe Mode through the Windows recovery environment and Startup Settings. The Settings labels differ slightly, so use the edition-specific path shown in the recovery steps and avoid judging stability until you return to normal startup.
Should I repeat an update or installer attempt immediately after a failure?
Restart first and make one targeted change, such as clearing the update cache or disconnecting nonessential hardware. Repeating the same action without changing the relevant condition can reproduce the symptom without adding diagnostic information.
